You can't reliably run four 60-cell panels in series on a TS-MPPT-60, without running into erratic shutdowns due to overvoltage, as the Voc of such an array sits right around 150 V. This video just shows me messing around with possible solutions to that problem, until finally building a device that's able to reliably fix the problem.

It makes me think that an immersion heater as a dump load would be ideal here, free (bar setup costs) tanked hot water and a solution to the OC problems, I've seen some examples of people sending the unused power from solar and wind turbines to a water tank to make use of it when it's not needed for batteries or general use... :)

That's a common solution when you have *lots* of energy to get rid of. This thing only dissipates less than 1 Wh per day in normal operation. Ideally, the batteries will never be so completely charged that it has to continuously trigger.

At least the heatsink survived V1.0's fire.

I have yet to ever set fire to an aluminium heat sink! I'm sure the day will come.

We just add a 50W zener to each panel, problem solved!

31:45 this problem can be solved by adding hysteresis to the circuit.
