"Stop judging yourself as much as you are. Every individual pitch isn't important. What's important is the entire song." Sam, thank you for this. I'm a magician and motivational speaker, and in a few days I'm going to be referring to you at a 7th grade leadership conference in reference to this sentiment. It's not just true of singers. It's true of magicians, and writers, and artists, and just humans. Every moment doesn't have to be perfect. What's important is your life's totality: who you are, what you stand for, and the people impacted. Would love to get you on my podcast someday.

such beautiful words Brian. Yes, I think many of us resonate with the fact that, beyond the technical points that Sam is commenting on, he is also very aware of the higher level ideas and values that he's communicating about; and he embodies what he teaches too !

I'm glad you made that little teaching moment on not focusing on the notes/pitches you miss. I'm not a vocalist, I have a disorder that affects speech and swallowing (in turn, makes my singing horrible haha) but I am a cellist!! Everyone can be so fixated on hitting a note correctly when doing competition that they forget that part of being a musician is not the amount of errors you make, but how well you adjust to those errors. Flexibility with notes and pushing and pulling the dynamics/vibrato/technique to accommodate the notes that weren't perfect can actually get you a higher score on your piece because it allows the judges to critique your musical intuition whereas a perfectly played by-the-book piece wont allow the judges to see what you're really capable of engineering in order for you to make it your own. (Holy run on sentence!) You're an amazing musician Sam and I enjoy watching your videos! I've learned so much even as a non vocalist that i have an even deeper appreciation for musicians.

Andi, I too have issues with voice, as i have had thyroid cancer. I love singing, but some days my gosh, it just hurts too much to do it :( I try not to let it stop me though. I dont know if I can sing or not, the dog doesnt run away and my husband doesnt tell me to shut up so thats a bonus right? ! I would love to be able to play an instument. I totally agree with your comment here. Btw, dont ever stop playing or singing. Its good for the soul x

@@LoriFahy awww I'm so sorry to hear that! But you've beat cancer! That's amazing! I just have a nerve disorder that makes it hard to coordinate speech muscles. So I slur sometimes or cant find my words. BUT playing cello definitely helps since it's the string instrument closest to a vocal tambor ;)

@emilywaddington469 5 лет назад
Andi c Just out of curiosity (and if this is too personal please don’t feel like you have to answer, I am not trying to invade your privacy), but what disorder were you diagnosed with? I’m a speech pathology grad student and I’m super curious. Myasthenia gravis possibly?
@andiceni24
@andiceni24 5 лет назад
@@emilywaddington469 oh no problem!! I actually have something called Chiari Malformation (Type 1). My cerebellar tonsils herniated out of the bottom of my skull and crushed my spinal chord (lamens terms). I've opted out of ST for about 4 years now, but I tend to do self care because nurses are the worst patients 🤣. I just avoid foods that tend to get caught like rice, peanuts, legumes. One of my coworkers taught me some good head tilt swallowing exercises that help too. But another part of the disorder is having difficulty interpreting your own volume and tone of speech, so singing is not exactly my FORTE.
@andiceni24
@andiceni24 5 лет назад
Sorry let me clarify for non-medical people. It's not a problem with the tonsils in my throat at all. It's a problem with the back most, lowest part of the brain (cerebellum) your cerebellum has it's own tonsils lol.

I've been wondering why I avoid practicing and why I'm so afraid of performing and you finally made it click for me. That whole section around 8:20 got to me. I've always wondered how I'm supposed to get better if I don't criticize myself, but criticizing myself mid-performance removes the whole reason I got into music in the first place. Beating myself up throughout the performance isn't fun and it means I'm in my head the whole time (which means the performance is probably even worse than if I had just let the little flub go), when I should be having fun and expressing myself. I can save the criticisms for afterward. Thank you so much, I'm gonna go have fun with my singing c:

What about reacting to Sia? (Not necesarily Chandelier, everybody reacts at this one and no one can sing it like her in my opinion, with the same pain and desperation - it's her life story after all) I suggest a live performance from her old indie era - her style was so different back then and this is my all time favorite live performance of hers> Somersault live at KCRW 2008. You will have an huge surprise! Thank you in advance.

I am also a voice teacher so this comes from an informed place - I think you mean passagio or, more commonly, the BREAK, not the bridge. It's almost onomatopoeia, right? For women, when we actually employ the break as opposed to easing over it, we feel so out of control and like the voice is going to "break", "crack" or quiver, if we're lucky so I know why she's so careful on the chorus. Whitney Houston did it successfully in "I Will Always Love You", Sia does it in "Chandelier" and it is the essence of yodeling. I do wish she had "gone for it" but that takes a different type of execution and she's such an expressive singer, I really think she was trying to communicate the text in her own unique way instead of delivering a karaoke version of the original. If it were a bridge, it wouldn't be so hard to "cross"- Just sayin'.

It's probably easier recording when you don't have to cancel out those tiny echoes thrown back by reverberant surfaces, I guess. Ahhhh, the Bob Ross of vocal coaches is back! Great analysis as usual...if you have a chance look for Paulo Nutini's "Iron Sky" Abbey Road Live Session :)

Michael Law I second your request. Paolo Nutini is my top fave singer-songwriter/musician. He is a phenomenal artist. Please Sam grant our request.

I love your videos! You definitely have a contagious smile! I don't know how you would feel about it, but I think it would be cool for you to do a video that we could get to know you more. I know not all people like doing those types of videos though so no pressure 😊

If you likes how Sara is so expressive, you should definitely react to Lara Fabian singing "Je suis malade" or "Broken Vow". Her performances are really emotional but her technique is still close to being perfect.

You are so awesome! I have watched other vocal coaches "reacts" videos. They have nothing, NOTHING on you. I have never had lessons, I love to sing and I didn't realize how much help vocal lessons could be. I would love to have lessons with you or with someone in my area who is as amazing as you!
