If you have known and loved this song as for as long as I have, then maybe you find it hard to hear anybody else but Sara Bareilles sing it, too... However, Alison Luff has starred in a Broadway production of the show in recent years, to critical acclaim.
Do you think she did the song justice? What does she do differently to Bareilles? What does she do to make this iconic song her own? Let me know what you think!

To me, this is the definitive version of this song. Alison kills it. More emotional/expressive than any version I've ever heard. It rewards consecutive listenings.

Interesting to note, Alison's performance was the first version I heard as I saw her on Broadway a few years ago. The audience was brought to tears and afterwards I watched all of the other versions on RU-vid but none hit me as hard as Alison's. This version has more of a "regretful" tone, someone who is truly upset and angry at how her life turned out, who wishes she could "start over and rewrite and ending or two". Hits me in the feels.

Could well be why Jeremy Jordan's version is my favourite. Again, first one I saw. But wow I do like this one too, just different to how I expect now.

Thanks for reacting to my request. I picked this because Alison interprets the song very differently from all the other Jennas (the character in the musical). This one is the frustratingly angry intense Jenna when all the others are more on the mellow gentle side. This studio set up and YT channel has produced quite a few other Jenna's doing this song live with a piano and vocal only set up such as Shoshana Bean, Katharine McPhee (now Mrs. David Foster) and Jordin Sparks. And Alison's version is by far the most successful one in gaining views as the others combined views will total to as much as Alison's views. Alison is the angry Jenna and I like her intense delivery and the edge in her delivery. In fact she inspired me to do my own male version in Alison's F# major key and lemme just say this I am more intensely and agonizingly angrier than Alison. You have been warned.......words were changed to reflect my personal situation so it is quite obvious "she used to be mine" becomes "he used to be mine". See link in the post under this post just in case links are shunned and blocked so this post will not disappear if the links are automatically blocked. Or alternatively you can type in these words into the RU-vid search box: "She Used to Be Mine - male version (Sara Bareilles) the Protestant Pope cover". You won't regret it. I promise you!

I think I've listened to every iteration of this song that exists and this is my favorite! I agree the perfect diction plays a part! Also one can intuit the intensity and emotion in her entire being. I do love Sarah B so much, but Alison won me over here! I always enjoy your analysis, ty!xx

Perhaps cultural differences shape our interpretations, but when I heard this version for the first time it grabbed me and didn't let go until the end. So, so, so much emotion and I love the little bits of acting that creep through in her face and body language. The crispness of her voice really brings out the character's frustration. At any rate, I truly enjoyed your interpretation and really appreciate your insight. Thank you.

Johan you were right when you said you can understand every word. I'm a non native english speaker and often struggle with understanding all the song lyrics. But this one I could perfectly understand and visualise the story. Well done. 👏

Great analysis. One of my favorite songs, a masterpiece of song writing, totally agree. Impressive version by this singer, no doubt. After Sara B's version, my all time favorite version is Luke Islam (who was 12!) on AGT. There is honestly something about Luke's version that never fails to bring me chills.

You're probably miss that since American Idol largely abandoned that approach a few years, as people were on to it and got sick of it (I think realizing the singers never would have gotten to be seen by the celebrity judges if the preliminary judges hadn't purposely put them through to be humiliated).

You miss the fact that this is someone who is acting the song! Sara Bareilles was selling the song in a pop way and they are two different ways of interpreting a song. Both telling a story. you are comparing a pop version of a song to a Broadway character driven version of a song it’s apples to oranges

This! Alison’s version is much more about the interpretation of the character. As someone who is not a singer, sometimes I found vocal coaches who focus so much on technique to lose the meaning behind the song. No one in the audience is analyzing her technique, but rather her portrayal of the the character.

It’s a fantastic version. But no one tops Sara Bareilles. The show isn’t autobiographical. It was a musical based on movie.

I think you would enjoy the performance of this song by Morissette Amon, one of the very top female singers in the Philippines. She has a fuller healthier placement of her vocals but still delivers a dynamic performance: Morissette - She Used To Be Mine (a Sara Bareilles cover) Live on Stages Sessions
