@@rutykzuty not to nitpick but it would be more accurate to keep it at "classically trained". if he did opera specific work (singing in an opera), i haven't heard of or read about it. its not for everyone, i would be quite surprised to learn that david phelps dipped his toes into that realm.

David Phelps is EVERYTHING! Zach and I are MASSIVE fans! You’ll have to listen to his cover of “Nessus Dorma”! He is classically trained, and has an album of classical songs. Not what you’d expect from a country gospel singer! He is technical perfection and sounds JUST like this in every live performance! We’ve seen him in person many, many times! His voice is anointed by God!

Thank you so much for reviewing David--many of us "phans" had called him the" Greatest Kept Secret" in the music industry...although that's certainly been changing the last several years as more become aware of his astonishing ability. He is also a producer, Grammy and Dove Award winner, among many other accolades plus has an almost 4 octave range--in FULL voice. Besides this one, as others have said please check out "Most Resonant High Notes," "Nessun Dorma," and may I suggest "Just As I Am," where he executes my favorite slide of all time. Your jaw will be on the floor. (Finally, I just have to say that your son is beyond adorable--he's a definite keeper, that one! :D )

Teamed with the late great Anthony Burger, pianist (passed of a heart attack at 44. Behind him, one of the world's greatest basses, the late George Younts of th ed Cathedral Quartet. David Phelps trained as a lyrical tenor at Baylor University. His was encouraged to persue a career in opera, but chose to serve God in the field Southern Gospel. The "congregation" is actually a conglomeration of Southern Gospel legends. Thankyou for your great reaction. Btw. It has been stated by at least one throat doctor that David is a dichotomous singer, that he has the vocal chords of a baritone, but the structure of a tenor, with a large skull that gives even better resonance. Again great job. You caught all the good points. He does rarely use his head voice, but by the time he gets that high....forget about it!🤯😉

Even after 23 years this performance is still putting listeners in awe!!! He hasn't lost a thing since either. Any of his many many recordings are awe inspiring. In my opinion he is the best tenor alive right now.

Thanks for reviewing David Phelps' version of O Holy Night, which is undeniably powerful. David is my favourite singer, as many of his performances have helped me during painful times in my life. I first heard of him just after my Mother passed away, when a friend recommended I listen to "No More Night". I was absolutely blown away. Two more of David's performances which I listen to regularly are his version of "He's Alive" (my favourite Easter song) and "We Shall Behold Him". I never thought anyone would give a better performance of that song than Sandi Patty but David proved me wrong. His entire "Classics" album is awesome; "The Dream" is so special and "Bring Him Home" will make you weep. The song of his I listen to most often, which is not as well known but is wonderfully healing, is from his album Hymnal, "Until Then". He could have had an amazing career in opera but has chosen to dedicate his life to ministry. For that, I am profoundly grateful.

Thank you for reacting to this!! And yes, he is using his chest voice all the way through. He does it often actually till an E-flat and even F above that. Which is very high, and he still manages to get it to be technically very good.

Actually no ..everything you hear that you like is always a mix ..very seldom do you hear someone sing all chest or all head..the sounds you like is usually a mix

I have seen David 11 times live...mostly from the second row. He is the best male vocalist on the planet...there is no doubt in my mind. I have been listening to music for over 50 years and have never heard anyone better.

The man that is a accompanying David is one of the best ever. His name is Anthony Burger. He has since gone on to be with the Lord in heaven. Way too soon he was young but the gift that God put in his hands is unbelievable

The gentleman behind Phelps, wearing the black suit w red shirt & red tie is Mark Lowry, the man who wrote & first recorded, "Mary Did You Know". He is just one of many famous Gospel music singers, writers, musicians, & family that comprises the "choir" on stage. They are not just the "congregation" that was alluded to here. They are all well known in their own genres.

His teacher in university wanted him to go opera. But he wanted to sing for God. Also, on many lists of best tenors, David Phelps is in top 3 and on a couple lists he’s #1. His body of work is so very amazing.

The Gaither Vocal Band has a long history of simply being the best, and getting the best. Here is a clip of Steve Green, the Gaither Vocal Bands first 1st tenor. David's voice adds so much to the meaning of the song, in the way that he uses the voice (and his power- especially toward the end), that it makes me really emotional. There is so much tenderness and adoration and praise, and awe of God, in his voice. It is otherworldly.

I've been a Gaither listener throughout the years and have seen them evolve. They change out singers every few albums. David Phelps is a freak!! LOL I'd say Michael English was the most versatile tenor I've ever heard but Phelps? Just like you said...no words lol

Anthony Berger on piano and David Phelps bringing the vocal performance..... Does it get any better than that?..... I believe not! The arrangement on this selection is spot on for David's range and passion. Then Anthony plays that piano perfectly with passion to match. Sadly Anthony is no longer with us. David.... however is! GaiTHer Vocal Band . . . You pronounced it "gater". I guess you don't know who Bill and Gloria Gaither are but she is sitting in the front row of that congregation. That congregation is made up of the greatest gospel artists to walk the earth today. I've been listening to David Phelps for nearly 15 years now. He is classically trained, you should RU-vid Phelps and hear his extensive work. He has a voice that is truly God-given and he give God all the glory for it. ~God bless you and yours
