One of the main reasons she was chosen for Elphaba is because during her audition she messed up the high note in Defying Gravity. She straight up just said the f word. They thought she gave off great Wicked Witch vibes. 😂

Idina has never publicly confirmed whether she has asthma or not. I have heard that rumour for the last 17 years but I don’t think it’s true. I think it is an acting choice for the character - she would gasp during her regular performances at The Gershwin theatre - she can’t have been having an asthma attack every night. I also don’t think The Tony’s speeding up the tempo because of their tight time restrictions helped.

I love Idina. I was lucky enough to see her perform live in her concert at the Sydney Opera House (coincidentally about 2 weeks after Kristin Chenoweth at the same venue!!) and she was incredible. But I think we can all agree that her instrument relies more on raw power and emotion rather than precision (like Cheno). Ok she doesn't hit every single note, but damn it she makes you feel something with every line she sings... and that's not nothing.
@indigothecat

Agree hard with Chenoweth using superior technique. Someone released a bootleg recording of different Galindas singing the "optional high note" at the end of No One Mourns the Wicked. Hers is by far the strongest, and she was the only singer that didn't slide into the note. It has that bell ringing effect that makes you go, "damn, now THAT'S a soprano!"

Not an excuse. Here’s a quote from a vocal teacher, “She always gasps because she carries way too much tension. A breath should never be this audible, no matter how fast it is. Try it for yourself... breathe in slowly through your mouth with a relaxed throat. Do it quickly. Then try it quickly again but this time tighten your throat. It will only be an audible gasp like this when your throat is tight.”

If I recall correctly, Idina was actually sick during this performance and there was a debate of whether or not she could actually perform, but she insisted that she do it because she didn’t want to let anyone who was expecting to see her down (in true Idina style). She was very much that way during her Broadway reign as well. She would go on sick because she didn’t want people to be disappointed that she wasn’t there when she was supposed to be.
@ceceliam9014
@ceceliam9014 Год назад
That's actually not great form as an actor. First, it's bad for your health. But second, understudies want that opportunity. Ideally it's written into their contract that they get to perform a certain number of shows, because they have to learn the whole part, rehearse and constantly keep it fresh so they can go on without much notice. Having to do all that preparation, it's important to give the understudy the chance to show what they can do. If she's sick not only will she potentially be hurting herself unnecessarily or getting other actors sick, she also won't be at her best vocally while another actor might be prepared to do the role and in top form that night. I can see how "the show must go on" (and only I can do it) mentality has some very admirable qualities and can be a really great attitude in a lot of ways, and it's wonderful Idina cared about not disappointing anyone who wanted to see her specifically, in some types of productions, no one else can do your part. But I'd say a Broadway production isn't necessarily where the attitude of feeling like you *have* to be the one to perform is necessary or helpful.

Yeah, I think the timing was faster in this specific performance. I'm assuming that's why she sounds a little out of breath and rushing at times. I've seen the show live and I listen to the cast album every now and I don't remember it being so fast. However, no one in the comments has mentioned my favorite Elphaba so I figured I'd drop her name. Danna Paola was the original Elphaba in the Wicked Mexico production and she's phenomenal! You should definitely check her Wicked performances out. She does sing in Spanish though since it's the Mexican production, but she's amazing and she's a bit younger than the usual Broadway Elphaba's so she gives a different, younger approach.

When I heard Idina's power balled "Let It Go" in Frozen, I knew immediately that they used pitch correction on at least a couple of the notes. Now, to be fair, pitch correction is an industry standard tool for all pop music and singing in movies, even "perfect" singers will receive some pitch correction. However, in the last bit of the song where she screams, "let the storm rage OOONNN!" you can hear a couple of very subtle breaks in the note that she sings with no vibrato initially. This is likely where pitch correction happened, and you can hear that she's tensing up to get the note out. As a disclaimer, I think Idina is an awesome actor and she's a good singer as well, but as Audrey points out, sometimes it feels like Idina leans too heavily into exaggerating her character and not enough on solid vocal technique. In a similar situation, the RU-vidr Sideways also points this out with regards to Anne Hathaway singing "I Dreamed a Dream" in the Les Miserable movie. One should never cry while singing, and rather, try to make it sound like the idea of crying while you sing, as otherwise it will cause the vocal chords to get even more wet and you'll choke up. In later interviews, Anne revealed that she didn't like the first take of the song, so she sang it several more times over the course of a few hours, and she and the director eventually had the horrible realization that the 1st attempt was her best take, as her voice went downhill after the abuse she put it through.

@carr0760 3 года назад
I agree about the Elphabas. In my opinion, every single one who has been cast since Idina is better. I disagree that she has improved since Frozen. It's the exact opposite actually. Her voice has declined significantly due to years of bad technique. She sounds fine in the movies/albums because they edit the crap out of it, but any time she sings it live she butchers the end. I actually find her painful to listen to live these days because I'm a vocal teacher and can hear the damage being done. I know what it feels like to sing the way she does, and it hurts.

My favorite performance from Idina of Defying Gravity is her 2007 Royal Variety Performance. She was in top form.
@SongsFromASuitcase
@SongsFromASuitcase 3 года назад
Why do you think that was?
@evan4905
@evan4905 3 года назад
@@SongsFromASuitcase I'm just speculating, so all of this could be gibberish, but I'll explain. The Royal Variety performance was during her London run. Most people would agree that this run was vocally 'better' than the preceding Broadway run. At this point, she had had years to develop the character and improve on her vocal technique. Sure, some of her more prominent vocal tendencies still managed to show, but it sounded like she was able to curb most of them to an extent to where it just sounded better. She added lots of stylization during her London run too ("so if you care to find me" pattern, deserves riff, etc). I'm not a vocal expert like you, so I wouldn't be able to actually tell if anything was technically changed but there is a noticeable difference. Additionally, the London company typically puts on standbys when there's big press like this. I'm going to assume that Idina's standby went on for the matinee before the Royal Variety Performance, whereas this performance from the 2004 Tony Awards (Sunday, June 6, 2004) would have been following a matinee Idina would have done just hours prior. The additional rest may have been beneficial for Idina. Idina is by no means the BEST Elphaba in terms of vocal ability, but she makes up for it elsewhere. Personally, Elphaba's greatest vocal ability comes from these ladies: Willemijn Verkaik (Germany, The Netherlands, Broadway, London), Rachel Tucker (London, Broadway), Jackie Burns (Broadway, U.S. tour), Julia Murney (U.S. tour, Broadway), Stephanie J. Block (U.S. tour, Broadway), and Jessica Vosk (U.S. tour, Broadway).

I'm guessing here, but Idina was probably wearing a harness/corset under her costume, to which the aerial wires were connected, When she was lifted, I wonder if the harness/corset compressed her upper torso, making it more difficult to take in the air. Just a hunch.

@@josevich kerry ellis really defies gravity, vocally. Idina is sublar in general for live singing, woman really struggles, but her acting makes her a worthy elphaba. She's really the defiant wicked witch

Hey could you maybe react to Sabrina Carpenter? Sabrina is a 21 year old actress an artist (she started on Disney and is popularly know for her role as Maya Hart in Girl meets world) She has 4 albums and many singles. She has such a unique pretty voice like it’s amazing! I’d like to see what you think about her? I love Sabrina so much and am such a big fan!

I was crew to breakdown the show in Albuquerque, and it it took a crew of over 100 to break the show down. If memory serves it was an 18 truck show, which means 18 semi trucks to move the show.

Her shallow gasps for breath sound like asthma to me. I have exercise/sports induced asthma. It's a narrowing of the airways when you are physically exerting yourself. Makes it hard to get a deep breath. You're only taking in a small portion of air compared to usual. I even was sent to a vocal coach to learn techniques in breathing so I could continue to dance. Because I recognize the sound of a thinning airways, that telltale gasp, I would probably think she has some for of asthma.

Its the Tony's they have so much time to have their performance... So that's why its so rushed I mean any performance is stepped up a few tempos. One performance comes to mind "Spring Awakening" they used up tempo songs so they can make their time. So they chose this song but kicked up the tempo for time
