Great analysis, Scott! Morissette, for being a Lyric Soprano, has a very "underrated" lower range. Her extension beyond her natural lower range is achieved by way of a lower larynx position and open vowel placements. She's very adept at manipulating her vocal anatomy this way to give depth to her low notes. Her attention to detail is superb. The performance you just reacted to was many years ago. Her lower range is even better now, at 26 years of age, due to more practice and maturation. She's just a beast of a vocalist! Regarding the pitch issue (at 3:30), it's funny how the haters would highlight that first, while ignoring all the extreme vocal acrobatics she was executing perfectly throughout the whole song!
Thanks for sharing that Joey! I have also noticed that her voice has matured and has become even more refined recently. She's blossomed. And yes, it's kinda sad but I think that's what many humans do naturally. We find a fault and we target that, instead of looking at and celebrating all the things we do right. For me, that performance was the real deal. She performed with so much poise.

If she sang this in 2018 this might have been more autobiographical than we might have suspected. I know I'm a big conspiracy nut, but given how things turned out who knows? And those idiots who were, "she's all pitchy everywhere, so she's no good" are jealous and can't sing their way out of wet sack. How many of them would turn down concert tickets with backstage passes. This one of the best renditions, it is THE BEST I've heard. How would you like to follow that performance?!! Hey Romyeoh. There were only two notes that I managed to spot. The first one is at 1:30: on the word "I" in the line "I know in my heart you'd find." When I slow that part down, she did eventually manage to slide up to the right pitch. But because her larynx was sitting in a slightly lower position to make that rich warm sound, perhaps it prevented her from sliding up to the right pitch in time? And the second was when she landed that super high note at 3:30. She landed on an E note instead of a Eb I believe. And so it sounds slightly off to me. I hope I've managed to answer your question Romyeoh. Please don't come for me haha. I only share what I hear. Don't get me wrong, I adore Morissette too!

The way she sings this song erases the true meaning of the song from longing to begging. She changed it so much from Whitney's that she is doing too much and she has lost her way to properly express the meaning of the song. No doubt that Morisette is a beautiful young lady and she truly has the gift of song with that awesome instrument that is her voice. But this is too much for this song. Even though she sang her face off. She's singing too hard and for so long at the wrong part of the song. It is no longer beautiful and it comes off as desperation. Where is the uncertainty? I always comment to people singing Run To You to never try and sound like Whitney Houston because she has perfected it because of her voice and no one sounds like Whitney--no one ever will because Whitney's voice is unique. Whitney Houston was truly a rare gift the likes of which comes once in a lifetime when it came to conveying a story about life, love and loss to the public through her VOICE, music and songs. Whitney Houston is called The VOICE! This cannot be repeated or duplicated. Please stop trying to out sing and/or out shine Whitney Houston when you sing her songs. I always comment to people who attempt to sing one of her songs to sing it in honor of Whitney, but make the song have meaning in your own voice. Don't try and sound like Whitney. Learn from her version. But, you can't change it or improve upon it because that can't be done. Whitney did that already. You will come off sounding like this. This is overkill and altered so much that it literally changed the tempo and the meaning of a beautiful classic. Do better. Do less and feel more... Where is the love in the lyrics? Where is the tender inquisitiveness in Morisette's voice? And why is the band playing rock and roll music? Why is Morisette singing, "I want to run to you, HOO HO", instead of, "I want to ruuun to YOU, YO-OU", "I want to RUUUUUN to YOU, YO-OOU"..."but if I come to you, Yooou?" The word "who" is not present. It's "you" drawn out over the ou sound. They are playing it too hard. She is singing it too hard. This is not a song about desperation. This song is about a person wanting to be seen for more than what is on the outside and for more than what they portray to the public, if the other person would notice them. Longing. No desperation...Right? I know Morisette can sing it and convey love and longing if she thought about it. This is no shade to Morisette. I know she can do it. She has the pipes. Just my thoughts. If I remember correctly here he is 18/19 years old, he can afford to make small mistakes. Do we not see the mistakes of so many singers that we inflate as fabulous when they are not, and we see the mistakes of a singer who is technically living perfection Seriously? 😂🤷
