Fun fact: They hired a swim stunt double but Lin didn't realise that Andrews dad was a swim coach and Andrews an amazing swimmer. The stunt double literally said "i can't swim that fast" after seeing Andrew swim 😂 Also in a beautiful coincidence, when they arrived at the pool they realised it was the actual pool Jonathan swam at

Jonathan Larson was a big inspiration to Lin Manuel Miranda. So it's likely surface pressure has elements that are an homage to Jonathan

Swimming was in Jonathan Larson’s demo for Tick, Tick… Boom, but was cut from the stage versions, because they don’t know how are they going to perform this on stage. When the movie is being made, they realize that they can perform this because the medium actually helps it (it also helps that the pool that they randomly found is actually the pool that Jonathan Larson swam in)

Encanto would have been lin's tribute to this song since Jonathan larson wrote in 90's ish...and he was/is a huge inspiration of Lin so I have no doubts he would pay tribute. Also lin was still working on writing Encanto while shooting and editing tick, tick...boom! So there's that too lol

I love that this song is essentially just stream of consciousness and it helps me process my chaotic thoughts. Especially when he hits 30 and it all comes to a standstill and then a crescendo of just absolute bliss. It turns my brain towards a calmer path.

The "woah oh oh oh" wouldn't have been connected to "Encanto". Jonathan Larson wrote these songs back in the late 80s maybe early 90s. Lin Manuel wrote "Encanto" waaaaaay later.

Regarding Encanto I believe Lin was writing Encanto songs while still editing Tick Tick Boom so its possible some notes bled through haha. it's all good though because we all know that Jonathan was the reason Lin got into musicals and he did an amazing job at adapting Jon's songs for this film.

I love this song for basically one reason; The first note on the guitar when he says “swim.”

Notable is that this song was cut from the original Off-Broadway production in 2001, primarily because it doesn't really work in a stage context. However, LMM really used the film medium extremely well to make this song come alive.

well swimming was written in the 90s so....encanto would be taken from tick tick boom lol probably just in lin's head as he was working on them at the same time probably

I dunno if Jonathan was ADD. But I figure that if someone has to make a song about swimming, it needs to be interesting. So I figure that this is a stream of consciousness monologue. That yeah, Jon is just swimming, but now he’s telling us what he’s seeing as he’s doing his 40-50 laps. It starts out as complete chaos and it’s all over the place, but when it comes into focus, it’s serene and peaceful. It’s almost like he attains enlightenment because says he is the water. Side note: I think there are a couple more nods to Encanto in this movie-but most of us didn’t know that until we saw Encanto on Disney+: In 30/90: Jon does one of Isabella’s poses when he sings that he’s no longer the ingenue. I always thought that pose he chose was a little odd-but then you watch “What Else Can I Do?” in Encanto and there it is. Fast forward a little: Remember the after-party that Jon threw for his girlfriend after her show? There was a guy there who said he sang madrigals in high school. And everyone is like “…what?” It’s such a weird thing to say if you didn’t watch Encanto-which most of us didn’t because we weren’t going to physical theaters just yet. And I think there’s one other nod to “tick, tick…BOOM!” and/or “Sunday in the Park with George” near the end of Encanto: Remember when Mirabel and her abuela have their heart-to-heart and make amends, and then Bruno comes busting in, and Mirabel leads the way back to their wreck of a Casita? At the ruined Casita, when Mirabel begins that final song and she leads her family “inside” Casita, she puts her hand to her chest and has this look on her face when she takes her mom “in”: it’s the same gesture and look as when Jon took Bernadette Peters’s hand in “tick, tick…BOOM!” And what Jon did there is a nod to that song, “Sunday,” from Sondheim’s musical.
