I am the honest vocal coach! I have been teaching for 15 years and been singing since I was 16. I teach from my own studio and also teach and mentor via email, and online via Live & Skype. I specialise in teaching children, and teenagers pop and musical theatre but I am trained in all genres of music. I have studied every voice technique there is, including Speech Level Singing, Estill, Bel Canto, Robert Lunte, London College of Music, ABRSM, Ria Keen, Kim Chandler, Stevie Van Lange and many more. I have been around!

the notes were definitely live, you can see her larynx raise and the veins on her neck are tense. also she drops the mic down to her hip, subconsciously she would avoid this completely if she was lipping in case she didn’t put the mic back up to her mouth in time

People are saying the whistles are lipped or prerecorded but I don't think so... She sounds pretty emotional and tense in almost the entire performance and it shows in her whistles. Some of the highest ones were slighlty off key and pretty weak and she added extra notes and sustained the last one

Green Bean it’s live. You can whistle without opening your mouth wide, it just means you’re pushing out the whistle and it isn’t healthy. You can also see when she does one whistle her nose scrunches up a little bit

I agree - I don't really get what the fuss is about: she's whistled before. She's not the best at it, but she can do it. I'm also not amazed like some, because MC's being doing crazy whistles for literally decades. I just don't know if these are live, though - can't really see her mouth (seems like she's purposely hiding it), and the sound seems to change a bit, as though she goes from live to playback. They might be live, though...

Noel Melin Hj I love Ari but I think the whistle was lipped because we always hear her breath in the audio and in this performance too. But when she was whistling we didn’t hear it and the mic was very close to her mouth. Still love her 🖤

@@kng001 When doing whistles you are letting out such a small amount of air that so it's very possible that the mic didn't pick it up. I can't really hear any breathy parts when I record whistles with my mic either so imo they sound as live as it can get.

@ivanchu0509 Your argument is weak. Whistles can be either loud or discreet. Ariana's whistles are not very loud that's why she put the microphone near her mouth. And just bc the camera was zoomed out from her face doesn't mean it was automatically lipped. That's like some dumb weak logic. Anyway, the media, vocal coaches who reacted to this performance and most of the GP think it's real and that's what the most important. You neyseyers and your opinion are 👎👎👎👎

The only main reason why some people think it is lipped,Is because she didnt do live whistle notes for years.Thats why some people think its lipped.But now she is proving that she can do it live.You can obviously hear it.

Froilan Ray the compression and reverb and volume shift literally changed when the whistles came in too. That’s why it’s not so unreasonable why people would think she lipped. She hasn’t sung C7s during a live performance prior to these questionable ones. I think people are justified in doubting whether she can do them.

Froilan Ray or maybe people are basing it on the fact that Ariana’s Emotions cover whistles were pitched up and heavily autotuned...which everyone with working ears would be able to hear....so thats a pretty good reason to not 100% believe they are live🤷🏼‍♀️

You as a vocal coach should have noticed the whistles were live and tense as af. Actually the entire performance resulted in those whistles. She was probably tired.

To be fair, some parts of the performance, the one right before the whistle is extremely tense, she sounded deeper in the few moments before the whistle. Maybe that's the drawback she do in order to executed the whistle? the part on 02:09 - 02:10 when she sings, "Imagine a world like that". The ending sounds rougher than usual if you compared it to the studio version. Mostly because when she recorded the studio version, she got a break between the whistle and the chorus. Unlike the live version when she have to sing in full.

Why do people think to lip something in a performance, they have to lip the entirety of the song? “Oh but she sounded tired and you can hear her breathe before the whistles” huh? You can prerecord a certain part and also keep the imperfections to make them sound live and believable.

There's a micfeed of the performance and they are not lipped. Not to mention she added one and sustained the last one. And they also didn't sound as good as in the song. The first one was a bit forced but she hit it none the less and that's what matters.

this is a very emotional song for her to sing... this was very recently after mac miller passed and this song is about the good times they had together. you can tell she is very emotional, when you're singing and trying not to cry it sounds very different... you have to put her emotions into consideration. the performance is more sentimental than professional.

What I love most about her whistles is that she doesn't just hit them and back off like she's out of breath. She hits them many times here and one of the last times she hits the note and draws it out a bit "haha...haha...haha...hahaaaa" like she really draws out that last part. And she's not hoarse when she tries to sing lower notes after going so high. Some singers have no voice after going that high.

Just found you and love your videos! Personally I find that they're live whistle notes. She may have had some help but if you watch her throat when she does it. Its so damn hard to fake those muscle moving when you aren't actually singing. Girl can do them either way. So what if she did need some help ya know? You can tell she just wasn't in her element that performance it actually sounded like she was gonna cry a couple times. And we can't blame her with the bombing that happened, pete, and mac dying its been so tough. She doesn't seem well and that's completely okay because she's human just like the rest of us. Just because she has a beautiful voice and well known for it, doesn't mean she isn't going to have problems on stage. Brendon Urie is the same way. He'll go on and perform unless he completely loses his voice. They're real with their fans and music, and that is what is lacking in a lot of newer music.

I can never make out what she is singing in most of her songs, live or recorded, and I think she sings in a very lazy way. I was curious to know what you think of her diction when she sings, because that is an important part of singing too, correct?

While everyone is talking about how her whistles were live or not, which they are, nobody is talking about how sad it was during the performance. She was getting emotional especially at the beginning and that was why she had some voice-crack like vocals and she was crying. The song is about Mac, so that’s the hardest part.

I'm confused by the comment about being able to hear the note (I've heard higher whistles; and live - I think these are playback - mouth hidden though). And also it being the top note of a keyboard - musn't be a full sized keyboard - she hits like a C7, no? Top of a piano keyboard = C8?

Just thinking back to this, and yeah, top note on a full size piano is C8. Mariah has actually hit one note/semi tone below this, B♭7, which she did live. Ariana hits a C7 here (?) - whether pre recorded or live - which is a while octave below top.
