It's possible that Cheryl was actually hearing the pre-recorded vocals in her earpiece, but somehow that channel got left out of the mix meant for the audience/broadcast.

So I used to work as a sound engineer for live performance at a large London music venue (not tv), so what I think has happened... They would have pre recorded a raw vocal without touch up specifically for this gig, which they wanted to play on top of the backing track in place of what would usually be the actual live mic. This is often done for numbers with lots of dancing so that you get more believable “as live” vocal sound that doesn’t sound exactly like the CD track but allows the performer to dance without risking a bad actual live vocal. Usually this recording would be mixed with the backing track ahead of play out, but the way it’s recorded and patched on the sound desk for her IEMs (monitors), studio PA and the broadcast feed could mean they wanted the vocal on a separate channel so they can adjust the mix of vocal independently for each (live studio PA and broadcast feeds have quite different mix requirements). So I think the issue is, that the channel with the pre recoded vocal wasn’t up or routed correctly to the master outputs. It may have been included in her IEMs (which could be why she didn’t freak initially) but not sent to TX or studio PA (it may have gone to studio PA we don’t know!). The whispy bits of voice you here at the beginning are her actual live vocal which isn’t full because she thinks the vocal recording is going out (and she might be hearing that in her IEMs). That mic is live so that she can ad lib over and shout out for real at given moments to add to the live experience. Most singers who lip sync don’t mime silently, but they don’t usually fully sing either especially when dancing. The latter part with vocal is where the engineer was alerted to the fact the vocal wasn’t up (they may have had it in on their monitors) and have brought it back in. Her vocals are that good because they aren’t live when dancing they are the pre record. She probably moved a bit when doing the pre record so it didn’t sound too perfect! I’ve seen Girls Aloud and Cheryl live several times, and Cheryl can really sing and has a decent voice. I felt bad for her here because she wasn’t trying to sing live she was dancing. Apparently the engineer got a proper rollocking for this.

Cat got her tongue. Maybe she could hear playback through her headpiece to mime to but there was only the instrumental provided for the audience. She started singing when she stopped jigging about. Then taken her ear out realising something's wrong.

It's pretty obvious that because of the choreography she wasn't supposed to sing live but to lip sync but that played the wrong track

The wrong track was definitely played it was definitely a technical error but she is a pro tho, most would've just walked off... So props to her

I was never a fan of Cheryl yet I do admire her maintaining professionalism and continuing with her performance despite the lack of vocals.

She forgot to sing, because she almost all the time do lipsync and maybe they played the wrong track. We can see we she started to sing she stopped of doing the full choreography. She definitely attempted to lip sync and the audio team realised the track was only playing in the in ears. There's no way she could pull of her best vocals with those dance moves.

Just to confirm right, cos I thought you would have actually picked up on this, she was miming the entire way through. When she started “singing” she still wasn’t singing, it was just that they realised the prerecorded vocal was on mute and turned the volume up halfway through. I love Cheryl, I really do but a live singer she is not. There’s 4 types of live performance vocals: - Entirely live vocals. - Live vocals with layered studio vocals to beef up certain parts of the song. - prerecorded “live” vocals. - studio version vocals. This performance falls into the “prerecorded live vocals.” A prerecorded live vocal is used to trick people into thinking that the artist is singing live because it doesn’t sound like the studio version. She just sang the song in one take in a booth somewhere before the performance and tried to pass it off as live because due to nerves or inability or whatever the reason, she can’t sing live and sound good. A full live vocal from Cheryl would be truly horrendous. But I Stan her either way so...who cares. It doesn’t bother me too much if someone sings entirely live. As long as the performance is bomb I’m there for it and Cheryl always gives a bomb performance.

She took the inner ear out so she could hear what the audience was hearing. She was meant to be singing over a track but the wrong track was played, it was an audience member that alerted her so she pulled the inner ear pieces out to hear then sang fully. Credit to her, I'm not a fan but it's tough to move like that and she actually sounded great when she started. Must've been the adrenaline giving her the capacity to breathe haha.

Seems like she had vocal/mic problems early on and couldn't hear it, so kept dancing and lipsyncing...realized later on in the performance and started singing, and at that point switched to less high intensity choreo. She had to weigh up, during performance, whether crowd would prefer to see her dance or hear her sing. No wonder she looked stressed towards the end!

The idea for this series was so creative. Looking forward to more videos like this one. And the intro is great as always ❤

It's a backup track all the way. It just didn't play in the beginning. It's a live pre-recording of sorts. Madonna uses it these days. These people can't sing without it.

I suspect she thought she thought her mic was off- or there was missing playback (usually she sings over playback). She was singing at the end you can hear by the audio.

It’s clearly a case of pre-recorded vocal (so she can mime while dancing) being fed into her earpiece but not coming out of the PA system.

The ear plug was playing up so she couldn’t hear her vocals, which is why she took it off so she could hear the music through the fold back speakers and that’s not ideal but she nailed it so for that she was beyond amazing.

You can hear at 5:15 the music gets slightly louder, it’s like the switched tracks over so maybe they were feeding the wrong one to her in-ear so she thought there was vocals on it but then they changed it so she could hear the track everyone else could hear?

She was supposed to be lip-syncing to her vocals, which she re-recorded to make it sound live when she mimed to them. However, they didn’t feed the vocal track through at the start, so we could hear her breathing/whispering as she lip-synced (perhaps she could hear the vocals but we couldn’t). Then towards the end, she doesn’t start singing live at all: they simply start playing the vocal track that should have been playing from the start.

She was meant to lip sync to a new pre-recorded track but that track didn’t play (hence why you can hear Cheryl whispering which is what you do when you lip sync) but later on they do play the pre-recorded track. This entire performance wasn’t live.

Is it possible that her ears were playing the track with her vocals on it and she didn’t realise there were no vocals until she took them out?

Cheryl has pre-recorded "live tracks" that she mimes to to make the lip syncing less obvious. That is why she sounds so stable once the track starts playing. The pre-recorded live tracks theory was proven when she performed Fight For This Love on X Factor and soon after performed it on a French radio station "live". The "live" vocals were exactly the same for both performances. Pls do an analysis on this queen! Actually, I think she was said to be performing with playback, so that is why she was lip-syncing. Unfortunately, when she realised, that there is no playback, it was a little bit late. Pity, as the live vocal is amazing, taking into account the choreography, which is crazily tiring in Call My Name

I'm not a professional so I might be wrong but I feel as if she was singing but the microphone was switching on and off and malfunctioning therefore you couldn't hear a thing she was singing.

I'm pretty sure she was just singing very quietly knowing she'd be lip-syncing but they didn't turn up the pre-recorded vocals.. usually in a live setting where the artist is going to lip-synch the vocals and the backing track are on two separate mixers so they can control the volume of each. There's no way that was her live vocal towards the end of the performance.. those same vocals were used in all Call My Name performances from that era. She's been known to use pre-recorded vocals all throughout her solo career so she's not lipsyncing to the actual studio recording. I could be wrong, but pretty sure I'm right. She used the same Fight For This Love pre-recorded vocals on ALL live performances during that era (funnily enough she also used them in a performance where she was sat down, check out her performance at X Factor UK compared to NRJ Radio) also Promise This, Call My Name and the list goes on. I'm not bashing her because she's an amazing performer, but when you watch all the performances, the vocals are always the same.

the reason her demeanour changed was because she didn't have to worry about hitting notes while dancing as she thought it would be lip synced but when she realized she had to get serious and focus on the vocals so it wouldn't turn out to be a terrible performance and panned online and in the tabloids, it could be easily explained as a microphone error and nothing more said, i didn't even know about this performance. Don't worry about the trolls, they probably can't even sing happy birthday in tune, they can't expect to get you to review their fave and then get upset when you comment on that artist's singing.

I'm not a professional here, but I know that under high choreographed performances like that, singers use to add pre-recorded vocals so they can deliver a good entertainment without struggling for support during demanding moves. She was singing all the time though, and what went wrong was probably a wrong track, with no pre-recorded vocals. That's why her microphone was on low volume at the beginning. She noticed that after a while and she took off her earphones to have a proper feedback and the sound team finally turned her microphone volume up probably because they could not hear what was going on outside their sound island too. What I also know is that, on stage, when a singer takes of earphones usually is because something is wrong, is like a code for the sound team notice that too. I remember watching Kylie Minogue's White Diamond documentary and she had to take her earphones off during a show because the feedback tunes were completely crazy and the sound team was like "what's going on, what's happening there?". Backstage freaks out when that happens. Yeah, Cheryl was very professional on this one.

I think the in ears were playing a different track to what's actually playing if you noticed she took the in ears out then she started to sing maybe she realised the wrong track was playing from what we can hear to what she can hear

I love how positive you are in all your videos. I am wondering, was Cheryl's mic off or something? That performance was hilariously awkward to watch. I can't believe she would just forget to sing.

I have a big question, three years ago I was run over by an 18 wheeler.. this relates to music bear with me... during the process I coded (died) they had to rush a tracheotomy and ended up splitting my vocal chords, I used to sing really well they told me it’d take a while to heal but it would return to normal. But I can’t hold a long note almost can’t get enough breath.. do you think this is doable? Will I ever get my voice back. I miss singing Ursula in the little mermaid. I used to be soprano If that helps at all... lol

Could be mic problem. She was singing but it was having trouble making it to the sound output. Picking up snipets of sound, with someone frantically trying to fix it.
