It is not just raw talent. She has spoken about how she learned to growl. Her inspiration came from a band called Otep. She said her first growls were at passing cars or in a pillow and how she hated that her growl sounded too female. It took her years to learn how to do that.

@@Tarasimonstudios I highly encourage you to revisit Jinjer. Check out "Teacher Teacher" or "Who Is Gonna Be The One" (Live) in particular. Look deeper into the meaning of the songs that they are playing, and how they inform the performance. Pisces is all about the characteristics of the astrological sign, one of the biggest pieces being duality, so the clear switching back and forth is HIGHLY informed by the content of the lyrics. I love the fact that you did this in the first place, but just tapping the tip of the iceberg when it comes to rock and metal singing, especially with female vocalists, is in my humble opinion, doing a disservice to a large percentage of the vocal music that is out there. I was browsing through your reaction video playlist and I noticed a theme revolving mostly around a lot of melodic and more traditionally clean sounding singers. Nothing wrong with that, at all, but I think that your followers could benefit from some additional vocal styles. Some suggestions on the female vocalist side Lzzy Hale of Halestorm Taylor Momson of The Pretty Reckless Joan Jett Lita Ford These are, as I said, just the tip of the iceberg. Also, Ronnie James Dio Corey Taylor Miles Kennedy The HU Have a great day.

That makes literally no sense from a scientific point of view. Testosterone causes vocal cords to lengthen and thicken. This is why men have a deeper voice. Deep screaming growls are masculine because they usually come from men as a byproduct of this phenomena. I get a lot of people nowadays prefer feelings over facts and want women to be whatever the want, something about diversity and equality. But it is not feminine. It is extreme talent though.

TO ALL THE PEOPLE THAT ARE GONNA TRY SCREAMING NOW: First of: If you´re like me, you might have an inproper way of doing that growl/clearing your throat sound that won´t get you to that kinda sound. And... I´ve learned it the hard way. If you are not careful while practicing, you can really hurt yourself. Some have coughed blood after ignoring pain in their throat and continuing with their practice. If there is any style of singing that REALLY depends on your diaphragm support to the point where lack of such can cost you your voice rather fast, then it is screaming. The power should NEVER EVER come from your throat. When I scream or growl, my throat is NEVER squeezed or anything. It´s rather relaxed. The Diaphragm is what turns the sound into that crazy aggressive thing that you hear Tatianna doing here. So... If you´re feeling pain: STOP IMMEDIATELY. Give yourself a rest. Maybe even one or two days. Always stay hydrated and don´t force your throat to make the sound. Stay safe, because nothing can fully restore your voice, if there is to much damage. Greetings from Germany, Dominik \m/

the way i understand it is that this is a false chord scream. and the thing about the false chords is that you can acheive subharmonic singing with them. lookup sub harmonic singing it's similar to mongolian throat singing. basically you can make your false chords resonate a full ocatave lower than your glottal chords. let's say a girl can sing pretty low...like an e3...she could probably then do subharmonic singing from the false chords down to an e2...which is technically a male bass note.

I'm not an expert but have experience as a vocalist/instrumentalist and she appears to be relying on fry screaming across the board for the lows/mids/high. Sometimes screamers will switch between false chords and fry's but false chords take a ton of breath (generally growls and grunts) and therefore usually done when they have time to breathe after. The reason she can switch so effortlessly between the brutal screams and her more feminine singing voice comes down to talent, practice, and science. The vocal folds are pretty much completely compressed together with air escaping/coming through during her screams and therefore not as detrimental to her throat as it seems because of this, the switch to clean is relatively easy (with practice). Certainly not everyones genre of choice, but I feel like bands as a whole are a dying breed and reaction videos from Tara and others who would never listen to any of the "hardcore" genres bring these bands into the limelight. Tara, your reactions were awesome! Dimash SOS and this have to be tied for my favorite reactions!

You absolutely have to do Nightwish-Ghost Love Score (Wacken). It's symphonic metal (no growling, promise!) The singer you'll see in that song is a trained opera singer and mixes opera and rock styles in the song (mostly rock in that particular song.) Floor is the vocalist you'll see in that video, and she is the band's third singer. The band's first singer was full on lyric soprano all the time. Their arrangement of the Phantom of the Opera is a good example of that first singer's abilities.
@draganakuzmanovic911

Floor actually attended Rock academy and she had just one year of operatic training, compared to Tarja who trained it for years. That's why Floor is much more versatile.

I think you would be a big fan of Floor Jansen from Nightwish. An unbelievable soprano with flawless technique that moves effortlessly through her entire range within epic compositions. "Ghost Love Score - Nightwish live at Wacken" is where I believe you should start. The style is considered Symphonic Metal but I would compare it more to The Trans-Siberian Orchestra than to Metallica.

Having a pretty good experience with growling, we can see that her throat stays relaxed the whole time when she has that possessed voice. Back in my early days of growling i could get sore in a matter of second. I realised it surely wasnt the right way to do it. Some of my favourite bands were talking just fine in between songs. When I learned it properly I could go a long time ''screaming'' without even bruising my voice. To finish I would advise to anyone who'd love to learn to growl, If it feels tight in your throat you are doing something wrong with it.

Now, I'd be really interested in seeing your reaction to Unleash the Archers-Tonight We Ride. The singer, Britney Slays has a beautiful and powerful voice. Another band member supplies a few growls to supplement, but it's not front and center like it was here. Really worth listening to! Most dangerous) it's takes a lot of air control and resonance in the head cavities and chest to do what she does, if you watch her facial expression you will see she is throwing her sound into her head, shoulders back and chest out.
