Jimmy coined a phrase for them playing live on stage: "We were tight but loose". This performance is a great example of that.

Robert used his voice like it was an instrument. Great analysis. They were all absolute masters.

This was 4 guys who were practically peerless in their own fields who could also meld together seamlessly to create a whole so much greater than the sum of it's constituent parts. I feel utterly privilieged to have lived through the Zeppelin era. It also gladdens me beyond measure to see younger people discovering Zeppelin anew and appreciating them so deeply. It simply goes to show that true musical virtuosity transcends all ages, era and styles.

Led Zeppelin was considered hard rock/heavy blues but they played a variety of genres from rock and roll, rockabilly, folk, with sprinklings of Celtic, Motown, jazz, R&B and more woven through various songs. Jimmy incorporates a lot of string bending in his playing to assist with some of those wails. He definitely gives his guitar a voice. Robert and Janis never got to perform together but Robert did see her in concert and did take some inspiration from her style. He tells a story of him being really young and getting to watch Janis perform at a music festival they were both going to be performing at and she gave him orange juice to help soothe his throat but it had vodka in it. Their music always surprises.

Amazing you mentioned Janis. Robert LOVED her singing and emulated her. Her influence is all over his singing on several Zeppelin tracks. Great pick up by you!

I’m really so pleased that younger people are seeing how great Led Zeppelin were. I was blown away by their first album and still to this day am enjoying their music. This is the second voice analysis video I’ve seen and both can see how incredible they were. If you’ve not seen their dvd of the show in 2007 at the O2 Arena in London that had Jason Bonham (John Bonham’s son) on drums, look for it - it was a reminder to all Led Zeppelin fans how great they were!

The versatility and live chemistry of Zeppelin is legendry. Your analogy of the four limbs of the body is spot on. When their drummer John Bonham die... it was the end of the band as well.

I saw them in 75 and 77. Still get goose bumps. They are all masters musicians. The real reason Jimmy, Robert and John Paul can do what they do is John Bonham. They are masters of changing time signatures where they are not all playing the same time. And Bonzo will at times follow after the guitar. Loved your reaction!

You are correct; their music, on stage, was the result of all of them being “in the zone”. Jimmy was once asked what he was thinking about when he was onstage. His honest answer was that he was not. He can remember going onstage and then coming off. Everything in between was just feel…just letting go and channeling.

Vocal master class is the right description, Plant is a maestro at vocalization….. and yes Zeppelin were much a rock, R&B band, check out any of their albums and they’re full of R&B roots! The best rock band ever!

I've been a Led Zeppelin fan for most of my 49 year-old life, and I learned to play guitar to most of their songs. This is the first time I've heard someone appreciate both Robert's and Jimmy's in such a manner. Well done.

Just to clarify the metal thing Led Zep never regarded themselves as a metal band. Heavy metal came afterwards and was influenced by LZ but only limited elements of it. This band is far more versatile and don't like to be pigeon holed. If you do more led zep they will constantly suprise and delight you, with rock , folk, blues funkiness and even reggae. The instrumentation is always wonderful , i think you will probably enjoy the tracks that feature JPJ on organ eg your time is gonna come and Thankyou. There is also the marvellous stripped back acoustic set, including the tracks thats the way and going to California. Plant and Page are extremely skilfull at dueting with each other, they take it in turns as to who calls and who answers. You will also hear duetting between Bonham and JPJ. They have so much fun on stage and so then the audience also does. There is an excellent live performance of I can't quit you babe at the Albert Hall London from 1970. But probably where you should go first is Stairway to Heaven, live at MSG 1973 which is a virtuoso performance.

And when you saw this band in concert they would put the whole audience in that trance.

The music withstands the test of time. It is awesome to see it is still appreciated all these years later by different audiences. ❤

To me, this is the greatest live performance ever ! True, never a same performance of a song . This is an example of what controlled randomness is lol ! A true master class in performance in every way ! 4 guy's who just go with the flow in a different way every night ! Going by pure feeling and running with it, coming back when they just know the time is right. A magic experience on and off stage ! Just imagine being in the crowd, even just for this song ! ....... The thing is, Robert Plant doesn't think in terms of all that technique and analysis, at all. He just does it. It's pure emotion and grit, and just belting out blues licks with incredible imaginative originality and energy. Singers today will analyze this to death but will never achieve that greatness and depth that Plant achieved. It might be good, but it won't be great. Singers trying to be technically masterful miss the fact that Led Zeppelin surfed over the improvisational wave in a sloppy, raw and exploratory improvisation, not afraid to crash. They are free, and because they are, their music is much more depthful. Much of today's music misses that entirely.

The whole performance is amazing but that intro....wow... the random noise from Pages guitar... its the chaos of the cosmos from which he pulls pure lyrical liquid melody. And then Plant comes in..Gives me the chills. Makes me believe in the soul

Great reaction. My favorite band of all time. I am so glad I got to see Robert and Allison in concert recently near Dallas. It was cool that they did some Zeppelin songs. He was actually in the record shop in Dallas looking for his albums lol.

Bonzo was into soul music and Mowtown Ballads; i was into jazz and classical music; Jimmy was into rockabilly, blues and folk; and Robert was into blues and Elvis Preley. People often speak of how "sloppy" Jimmy was in performance. I always suggest that he is the master of improv and that you can't compare the original album to live. They're two different animals. I do want to respect the way you understand Robert's vocal abilities.

As one who found your channel as a result of the pandemic and jumping over the wall of the very limited talent of the American pop music world, into the unbelievably talented world of European rock and metal musicians, and watching and learning from your expert breakdowns of bands such as Epica and Nightwish, seeing you now go back to my childhood of bands like Led Zeppelin! Tara loved your commentary and breakdown of this great LZ song. Especially loved your analysis of Plant’s singing. LZ were four supremely talented musicians who also had great feel, cohesiveness and spontaneity when they played live concerts. Because they were so in sync with each other musically they could improvise more and yet always come back to the scripted song. Saw JPJ interviewed once and he said two things that really impressed me. One, when they were playing live concerts he never wanted to be the one who let the other guys down. The bar was set very high and you were challenged every night to play your best to keep up with the other three guys. Two, all of them were very good at listening to each other and responding instinctively to what the others were playing.

Very interesting and professional reaction! Zep were 4 super professional artist that before been Zep were individually already great talented musicians playing jam sessions and music with several famous artists. That’s probably why they were capable of such incredible live performances. And Robert voice was unique and perfectly mastered.

I was inspired to get out my copy of Led Zeppelin the BBC Sessions. Well I'm glad I did. Recorded in 1969 for BBC radio programs, this is as good as it gets. These performances are absolutely explosive.This is a band at their absolute peak. Page's guitar solos are endlessly creative. Whew! This performance was during a very tough year for plant. His high range was pretty much lost by the end of the year before and he was kinda struggling in this tour. I suggest you do some stuff from royal Albert hall to see his peak

Hi .. Your reaction was spot on great job !!! I was at that concert way back in 1973 sitting in the 9th row orchestra at MSG. I was 16 years old then & I'm now 66 . Zep played close to 4 hrs that nite . I hope that u react to more song from this concert. Zep will blow your mind with Rock and roll with more blues through out the show . I've been listening to Led Zeppelin for most of my life at this point. I was about 12 or 13 when I saw The Song Remains The Same for the first time on VH1 when they used to show movies on there. Before that I had learned most of their music from just listening or music books. But seeing one of their performances live......I was blown away. I can still listen to this particular song over and over and just enjoy it so much. Listening to live Zeppelin is so much different than just hearing them on the radio. Their manager wanted more people to see them live because their live show was, hands down, one of the best acts ever at the time. The sheer talent and musicianship is just mind blowing.

I liked how you explained the nuances in Plants singing and where they were coming from etc... That and giving insight on Pages playing and the band as a whole. I am a long time Zeppelin fan. Heck my license plate is Zepplin. I have watched multiple videos in which it's been said, when Page heard Plant sing for the first time, he knew he was who he was the one.

In an interview Jimmy was asked about the length of their shows; he said if you took the time stamp of each song in the set list as recorded on its respective album, you had about an hr an 20 mins of music. The show was 3 1/2 hrs. That gives you some perspective of how much improvisation/jamming they did each night. Rarely were songs "repeated" from night to night even if the set list was the same yet they knew instinctively where they "were" within a song... Dazed and Confused is a great example of this. It was typically a 30-42 min jam where Jimmy would go off and become One with the ether...

Page and Plant are notorious for doing the call and response stuff and do it like no other. The Live album has a couple tunes Whole Lotta Love and Dazed and Confused where they really get that magic.

There's two recordings of this song on different nights of the same concert and the other one is a lot better, not only for vocals but guitar playing but unfortunately people keep choosing this version. It's too bad too especially for vocal reactions. I mean this one is good....but the other one is an absolute masterpiece.
