The greatness in her voice is she sounds like no one else. Like Bjork or Sarah McLachlan...you know immediately who is singing. I love that distinctness.
Absolutely LOVE Melanie C. I love her voice so much and have seen her live 3 times solo and once with the Spice Girls. Mel has an incredible energy and is such a fluid and interesting performer. Tbh I love anything from Melanie and am always excited to buy her new music on Cd.
What's crazy is I hear some of my pronunciation and vowel sounds when I watch these clips with you. My accent is from Michigan in the United States. We tend to have a widened 'A' when we talk. And some of my accent comes out in my singing. I love Mel C. She's always was my favorite Spice Girl. I'm starting to see why now. I really music look into her solo stuff now. P.s. Well, Melanie C has always been the best singer in the Spice Girls 😉. However she has also stuck to music as her main career path ever since they went on their first extended hiatus in the early 2000's. The others have done some solo work too (think Geri and Emma the most after Melanie C) but she's the only one who has consistently been making music over the years. So it's kinda a given she would have improved her vocal technique much more than the others.
It's cool that you reacted to Mel C the most successful solo Spice Girl, I think she even had better live performances though. She's a great singer and even a better artist! Can you please make a reaction video to Britney you oughta know please?
I luv that Mel C dabbles in various music genre. As for me I dont like her pop rock stuff much, I'm into her new electronic pop dance sound. My fav album is Version Of Me.
To be honest there are far better performances than those ones in that video but nevertheless lovely video. I personally love Mel’s voice! No she doesn’t have Adele level vocals but I think she’s a very capable singer really though. I also think she is quite the performer on stage in the regards of how she always gives so much energy on stage. Side note: loved your I had a dream bit. Lol. Also, this my be reaching but do you wonder if she does the extra breaths thing almost in a self-consciously/unknowingly to prove she’s singing live? Cuz I think we all hear that statement thrown around with the spice girls that they never sing live?
I agree. I'd have preferred to see more of her own songs featured since there are some incredible live versions of f.ex When You Are Gone, Go and I Turn To You which would have done her live vocals way more justice, than her singing covers of songs that doesn't really fit her style of singing (even Georgina pointed out that Melanie C's voice is better suited a more pop/pop rock sound).
I agree. I think she has lots of better performances. I like Mel C covers but she is Better when she sings her songs and this were all covers. Most of them. I'm not a fan of spice girls and the other spice girls cant sing at all but i think that melanie also had great vocals in the group, I was surprised to not see any of her vocals from the Spice time. There's a song called naked where she blows away the other members

I wonder if the "A" vowel she uses so much has something to do with her specific accent? One thing that set her (and Mel B) apart vocally was they had very different accents from the other Spice Ladies. Just me thinking aloud. :)

I still don’t know how to work RU-vid properly but I absolutely love the honestvocalcoach always watch the vids but.... 😕 after watching the vid of Cheryl on stand up to cancer I really need to clear the whole situation lol! Basically she was not supposed to sing at all! Which although you may think Is bad but as Cheryl has always said she’s not a strong singer she’s an entertainer and she put on a good performance. She did not forget her own lyrics; she’s not stupid, she obviously had her song playing through her earphones but the lyrics wasn’t playing so she thought the song was playing. I love and agree with everything the honest vocal coach says but just thought you’re pretty naive with that performance of cheryls. And as you said once she realise the song wasn’t playing she started singing and was really good 🙂
go to richer sounds for headphone advice, in ear headphones are just not as good as real headphones they always sound thin to me, if your listening to mel c on them you might be better off with ear plugs
Melanie shouldn't sing - I'm sorry to her fans. She has the most irritating screaming voice. I honestly am glad she's not famous anymore. I don't think she can really sing.
Just cuz you find it irritating that doesn’t mean she can’t sing. She is a capable singer actually. There is a difference in someone not being able to sing and just not liking a singers voice. And actually she is still decently well known and popular still.

'Cos people who aren't famous get asked to co-star in Jesus Christ Superstar, fill in for Carrie Underwood when she can't make a performance with Keith Urban (when they literally could have chosen anyone), successfully sell seven (soon to be eight) solo albums, get invited to headline a Pride tour in front of three million people, get asked to headline various events, like the James Bond tribute, Royal British Legion, etc, get asked to headline summer festivals, host various TV shows. I get that you don't like her. No one said you had to, but you can't deny her success. Her voice is definitely not for some, but there's no denying she's capable of singing well. She hits the notes, has technique, and infused emotion into what she's performing. No need to feel sorry for us fans. We quite enjoy her and support her. That's why she's still around 20+ years after her debut.
Melanie C is truly wonderful. The best singer from the best selling girl band of all time and I am so happy you reacted to a video of her vocals. Truly stunning and for me the best singer from a British Girl Group (Beyonce is different to the rest) Love Melanie C!
Mel C never looses her accent when she sings, hence the sound of her vowels having the "A" tone to them, which in fact makes her voice all that more interesting.
I was thinking exactly the same thing: "Isn't it just her northern accent?". I mean I am not from the UK and English is not even my first language but I do realize her nothern accent and I do LOVE that she keeps it even when singing!!! That's who she is❤ there's not only one way of speaking English.
One thing that stands out to me is her lack of vibrato when she belts or sings louder. She seems to have vibrato only when she sings breathily. Do you think that’s due to a style choice or lack of ability?
I reckon it's a choice if she doesn't use vibrato. There are some clips when she sings acapella she uses vibrato, that means she can do it if she wants to.

I tried a few in-ears. As you said i missed some bass and deepness. I tried many headphones. And my no1 is the "RHA MA650 wireless" which I bought. I love them and the sound is better than on some expensive over-ears. My no2 was the "Teufel Move BT", which also has a good Deepness but the headphones were too heavy.
Northern Star was a REALLY GOOD POP ALBUM. As an adult I appreciate it much more. As a kid I only listened to Goin Down, Never Be The Same Again and I Turn To You. But the whole damn thing is great.

The g and a thing is just her accent. Cant see how that can be s fault. Adding bits at the beginning I've not picked up on will have to go have a listen. Agree with breathes between is her worst attribute I'd say
Don't edit yourself coach...I love Melanie C so much!!!! I can't explained it in words. I am realistic she is not the best singer BUT I don't care she gives everything on a stage. I get so emotional everytime I listen to her & the first time I listened to her in a concert...yes... one of the best days of my life...She has so much power, she is truly special. SHE IS SO GOOD!
Melanie C is brilliant! Her voice had to grow on me at first but it quickly became one of my favourites. Of the other Spice Girls only Emma can come close to her talent-wise with her vocals, but Geri's been taking vocal lessons recently so who knows. I do know I've seen videos of Emma just talking and then singing and she even takes it into an operatic voice, so I know she still keeps her voice healthy, but I wish she'd release more albums lol! Cos for me, each time Melanie C releases something I am so happy I listen to it over and over. I'm so glad she's beginning to get taken more seriously. Just because she was in the Spice Girls, it doesn't mean she can't sing. In some of their earlier performances, she was off-key a bit, but that was just lack of performance skills,, which she rapidly picked up. So I'm waiting for new stuff now, either from her or from a Spice Girls reunion, but I guess Mel B's voice is not what it used to be after smoking for a number of years, so I don't know if that'll work out. Mel C was & still is the strongest vocalist off the group. Though in the beginning of their live tours in the 90s, she was awful. She was shy & lacked confidence. Mel B was the best performer in their heyday. But ever since Mel C went solo, she started to find her style & developed herself as a true artist. Her image improved, better vocal techniques & a brilliant song-writer too. Since then, she became the ONLY credible singer off the Spice Girls.
Kinda wish a few more of Melanie's own songs had been included on this list (especially from her first three albums which came out during her "rock era") but other than that it was a great list😊
Just discovered your channel across the pond! Second video in! Curious, from a States perspective, do you personally not care for regional stylization, especially when it comes to covers? I hate to harp on being from the States because we're annoying enough, but as somebody from America I learned to tell the difference vocally between regions in the UK by listening to the Spice Girls! I like being able to pick out a singer and know if they're from Leeds because I heard Mel B. Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse both had heavy affectations to their vocals that seemed regionally specific. Mel C's cover of "I Wish" has a very specific (and tonally *chef kiss*) flavor to it. It's honestly the first time I really felt some soul out of her. Just my take! What's your take on it a few years later? One last comment after the book I've written: If you think her vowel choices are a little all over the place, watch the first scene of Spice World when she hits the big notes in "Too Much", 'cause her lip-synching is a CHOICE, I have laughed about it since I was a preteen -- Can't wait to absorb more of your content!

I feel that a lot of people assume Mel C can't sing because she's a Spice Girl but she can sing. She's certainly not Kelly Clarkson or Adele but to say she can't sing would be like saying Britney Spears has a better voice than Kelly Clarkson.
