Hello Everyone! I have started a second channel called "Roar!" where I take on challenges and push myself out of my comfort zone. You can check it out here: ru-vid.com
Beth Roars since you are talking about Black Sabbath, then perhaps you will have something to say about the duet of Gilan and Dio who sang in this group ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AT7XcYxco4M.html
"Like telling a group of children a story" is the best description of Dio that I've ever heard. Perfectly sums up his essence, that sense of magic and wonder.
It cracks me up to hear someone questioning how healthy Dio's technique was. The man's singing career lasted over 50 years (1957-2008) and he was as powerful near his death as the many times I saw him live in his last 20 years. He commanded and technique obeyed.
I don’t find it at all out of line to ask that question. Ronnie Dio left the dulcetonic bodies of many imitators along the musical highway, as they too, assumed they could do what he did. I know people who will never sing again because they thought they understood his voice. I appreciate Beth’s thinking.
And while his voice did change as he aged, it never really degraded (the way Rob Halford's or Geoff Tate's did, for example). Whatever Ronnie was doing, it worked for him, and it didn't damage his voice.
I saw Rob Halford with Judas Priest in 2015 and he hit all the notes but I see Geoff Tate's voice changed. Rob Halford being in his 60s, it's insane he hits those notes even on Painkiller.
you can pick anything off the Heaven & Hell album and it's a masterclass. He's totally theatrical. worth remembering that he's a trumpet player too so his phrasing is kind of in that vein... (the original version on the album is so much better, it'll give you chills!)
@Jack Randall Agreed. The studio version is much better than this live version. This is probably the worst version of this song I have ever heard. He strays away too much from the original melody. I had heard other live versions that were as good as the studio version.
@@roadwarrior4080 As far as I know he wrote it so he kind of could. But then again mentioning Sabbath in the same context wouldn't hurt anybody. Luckily they didn't have problems with such things like Queensryche has...
Black Sabbath - Neon Knights. The first song on Heaven and Hell, Dio´s first album with Black Sabbath. Incredible introduction to him as Ozzy´s replacement.
after proper review of this video I can concur with these 2 facts stated. the first 1 was obvious. Dio was the best ever and I do agree that Beth is indeed a beautiful woman (
One of the best singers of all time! 🤘 Also, said to be one of the nicest & most approachable people, who took the time to meet with & talk to fans, and even remembered names & stories years after meeting them. RIP to a legend! 🙏
This is Dio the solo artist with his band, if I'm not mistaken, after he left the Sabbaths. And since he co-wrote the song, he took it on tour with him as a solo artist.
I believe you are correct, i dont see Tony Iommi and i do believe that is Vinny Appice on the drums but Vinny always plays with him..( even in Sabbath).
Anyone can play anybody's song(s) live, but if they put it on a dvd/blu ray; they will have to pay royalties to the musician or band that they covered. Unless they wrote the song from a their former band, then they won't have to pay royalties. Ozzy sang Sabbath songs. So many musicians cover others songs. It's a tribute.
Love me some Dio, absolutely fantastic singer. Probably my favorite male metal singer ever. As for suggestion, how about the crowd singing along to the Bard's Song (In the forest) by Blind Guardian :)
RJD pulled me into metal when I was a kid and he was with Sabbath. I was mesmerized by his voice. Through Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and Dio, he dominated any stage he stepped foot on. The ultimate metal story-teller. Legends live on.
The wild thing about the late, great, Ronnie James Dio (RIP), was that he was so short, yet, he had one of the most powerful set of lungs for someone of his size, this side of Hell. And, from what I've heard, the nicest guy you'll ever meet.
Stargazer and A light in the black from LP Rising ( in fact, all songs from this LP are masterpieces). Heaven and Hell with Sabbath and Holy Diver + The last in line + Sacred Heart are masterpieces, too. Ronnie James was the greatest. RIP.
I've been to literally hundreds of metal concerts over the last 35 years of my life and Dio is, without a doubt one of the top 3 live metal experiences I've ever had.
Always makes this old footstompin headbagin rocker smile to see younger folks enjoy for the first time, music and concerts I was at in 10th grade. DIO Sacred Heart tour. Original guitarist Vivian C, leaves half way through this tour. I still have front row pictures and you had to do it on the sly. 110 Kodak instamatic. Antique by now. LOL ! Well done young Lady.✌From Utah.
Hey Beth, I love your videos!! You explain (in a clear way) the technical part of music and also the emotional part. Dio is one of the greatest singers of all time, in my opinion. I would love to watch a reaction/review of: - 'Venice Queen', RHCP Live at Slane Castle: One of the greatest live shows ever, the whole band was at its best (specially John Frusciante, HEAVENLY BACKING VOCALS and guitar playing). - 'Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own', U2 live at Milan 2005: Bono and The Edge were INCREDIBLE! Greetings from Argentina
It goes from vibrato to D to a high note because he makes use of a range that is wider that few vocalists can ever reach. He's had 45+ years of singing experience. Why he's known as the greatest.
Hey Beth, FYI in this point in his career he was considered to be Royalty already. He was in his 40’s. He died in 2010 and was still flawless vocally. I’m glad you are seeing him:).
I saw Dio live on his reunion with Sabbath tour in Sydney a couple of years before he died. The crowd hushed in anticipation and as this little 60 year old man belted out his first note my jaw dropped to the ground, as did the rest of the crowds. Absolutely amazing vocalist, and an all round cool dude. RIP Dio :(
Ahhh Every song Ronnie James Dio (R.I.P.) performed, was an emotional roller coaster... He has the best voice in metal. Period. 53 years as a professional singer...is brutal.. yet.. one never tires of his talent. So much thanks giving this wonderful man the respect he deserves... world's a lesser place without him....
Once, in a far-off, magical kingdom called 1983, I was in community college, taking a singing course. In one of the college's practice rooms, I was practicing _Black, Black, Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair,_ or _Some Enchanted Evening_ (which was below my range, I'm a tenor, not a baritone) or some other such standard learn-how-to-sing tune when I decided to see how loud I could get. So I sang it loud. Then I sang it really loud. Then I sang it Tom Jones loud. Then I *really* sang it *really* loud and there it was: That ballsy, bellowing, distorted Ronnie James Dio sound. That's the only time I've ever really done that sound. I didn't hear it again from anyone except Ronnie Dio until I heard Chris Cornell sing _Black Hole Sun_ years and years later. How did I do it? Standing up straight. Neck straight, head level, and as open and relaxed as possible consonant with maintaining pitch and with lots and lots of breath and diaphragm power. Is that how Dio (or Chris Cornell) did it? I don''t know. Maybe not, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised.
This version is updated .. Some notes are higher than the studio version , more expressive . Just he put that in Italian riff raff mode super ballsy , so the harmonics and note are some fatter and lower than it is .
I am not English speaking and my English is not so good. But I found myself thinking that I do not need to strain with the translation of Your comments, I just look at You, gestures, emotions and it becomes clear to me what it is about! You're great! James dio is just great in his element, in a bunch of amazing voice and emotions!
He did that from his teens till his death in his mid 60's. He had complete control of his voice always and was a massive perfectionist. Very humble man, too. Gracious, and kind. Man, sure miss him.
I actually met this guy in 1984. He was short with really long curly hair. After a show, he and a small entourage would often go hang out at an IHOP for a while. In some of the cities he visited , there often wasn't much else open that late at night.
Keep coming back to this live reaction, (not 2 many of this performance). When it's Dio live is always better! Heaven and Hell came out 1980 my freshman year, killer, just killer album. Shout out to Vinnie Appice, Carmine younger brother 🤘
Funny...as great as Dio was (I saw him at least 5 or 6 times) for the purpose of analyzing his voice, at least, I think studio is far better. For a bunch of reasons, I guess, but hey, to each his own. Rock on, man. In any event, imo she's stopping the action WAY too much here...after the first 5 seconds of singing? C'mon...but again, whatever works...
DIO started playing a trumpet and then a doo woo singer before getting into rock. So many story's I could tell you. I can also tell you the sound production on most of the artist you have reacted to.
Dio is a legend. I always feel weird watching videos of him performing the Black Sabbath songs like this one without Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler on guitar and bass respectively. I feel like only those two could stand up to his insane vocal performances, no disrespect to the band here. Their reunion tours under the name "Heaven and Hell" (the name of the first Black Sabbath album with Dio on vocals) are pure magic. This man didn't lose his voice till the day he died, even through the cancer he had to fight.
Watch one of Dio's later performances. He's absolutely amazing. He doesn't sound like he did in his prime, but he more than "held up," he continued to shine until he died. Really the standard I bring up when I talk about metal singers who aged extremely well.
Ronnie was one of the best singers ever, of any genre of music. He was so natural and made it look so easy because to him it was. He played trumpet as a youth and often credited that to teaching him proper breathing technique. Fun fact for you. Thanks for the reaction.
About a year ago, my daughter was 5... she started demanding the I play Dio's Metal Hits, on the way to soccer practice. She calls it her "Ready Music"....!
I do not like heavy metal but have lately been a bit obsessed with this guy. First with his interviews- he's very smart, has a caustic wit, and is as charismatic in conversation as he is performing. But my response to his performances is like Ms Roars; you can't help but be impressed by his chops and drawn into his musical world. He's also the first rock show I ever saw- 1975, with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow.
The first time i heard Ronnie James Dio, I was a kid. I never knew back then that love is all was sung by him. Because it said Roger Glover. Buy from that moment on i was a fan
My wife and I had the pleasure of seeing Dio perform on the last heaven and hell tour before he died. He sounded just as powerful as here and had such great stage presence. RIP
as you're entranced by this song, you should dive into 'Holy Diver' and 'The Last In Line'. Dio was reputed to have 'the most evil voice in 'Rock'...and he owned that to his dying day...
Two cameras and some more editing? Seems a bit much for this sort of video, but your efforts to continuously improve your videos is noted and appreciated! Never get comfortable, there's always more success to find!
I wish you would review Ray Gillen's version of this song. Gillen was with Black Sabbath for only a brief period in the mid 80s, but there are a bunch of live recordings with him from that time. I absolutely worship Dio and everything he's done, but Ray Gillen takes it to another level!
One important takeaway from this is how very different this is sung live as opposed to on the album. I was lucky enough to see Dio live once and it seemed to me like he very much wanted the live experience to be distinctly different performance-wise. He was absolutely one of my favorites growing up and I feel like his work gets better with time. I'm able to appreciate things today that I never noticed as a young pup. I think very few people try to cover Dio because he just made it look easy but in fact it's anything but.
I think what many people miss (even some vocal coaches) is how natural a vocalists range comes to them. Some vocalists can hit the high notes, but it takes all they have to give, they're really straining at it. Ronnie Dio didn't have to try very hard, it was a natural part of his range
I have watched a few of these reactiob videos and wanyed to say how good it is that metal is finally getting some reconition . Metal is music amd metal musicians and singers are as good or sometimes even better than any mainstream act. oh and as for surprising singers try Dee Sniders were not goning to take it , the version he did for child cancer it will surprise you
Rainbow guy, thought I recognised him, was in there with a slightly unknown obscure guitarist Richie Blackmore. I love 'Catch the Rainbow" Did you know that a counterpart of you on RU-vid, The Charismatic Voice' is a big fan of DIO?
I'm not an expert so I don't know how 'healthy' that distortion is, but as a fan of the great Ronnie James Dio, I can tell you that he had done that for 40 YEARS without damaging his voice in any way. I'm not sure if that was because of good technique or because he was just that great, but that was Dio. He was even more awesome in the 70s which in my opinion was his prime (with Rainbow), but he was touring and amazing us mere mortals well into his 60s, right up until his untimely death, God rest his soul. He was a legend. FYI, I know Dio's career lasted over half a century, but he wasn't using the distortion and the rasp in his voice until the 70s, so that's why I said 40 years.
Idiot. A "vocal coach", or any kind of professional interpreter, of course wouldn't just apply "techniques" they just invented for themselves but describe anything they notice in how it works (the goal of any science or field). You are not just joking but a genuine anti-intellectual idiot. That also defines your relative popularity on the internet or at least now...
@Los Fromla I've said it many times, Ronnie James Dio = THE GREATEST ROCK / METAL VOCALIST EVER . PERIOD !!! God how we miss you. . R.I.P RONNIE. .♡☆♤☆♧☆◇☆.
I saw Ronnie with Vivian in 1984 in Honolulu when I was stationed there in the Army. Dokken were the opening act. Awesome show. The last time was the Heaven and Hell show in Grand Prairie Texas. Machine Head and Megadeth were also on the bill. Rex Brown from Pantera, Dime's girl Rita Haney, and Vinnie Paul's drum tech Kat were in the lobby . Epic Metal night for me. Hard Rock and Metal rule.
Nevada Dan ... about the same here. I’m 52 and I remember hearing Man on the Silver Mountain at a young age. For me though, I never heard much after that until I rediscover him in the 80’s.
@@jimshort9266 about 15 years ago, I found out at the last minute that he was playing at the Ventura Theatre in California. The concert was literally the next day. I drove down from Reno with my wife at the time. We were in general admission, which put us directly in front of the stage. I was about 8-10 feet from the band and just watched in amazement. They were awesome live
Regarding that distortion you mentioned, he kept going for a 25 more years after that clip was recorded and was one of the few rock singers that still had a voice that could deliver those songs up 'til the very end (he died in 2010). The greatest hard rock singer of all time! 🤘😎🤘
He is known as the best singer in metal for a reason. I'd be interested to see your thoughts on some of the great but less conventional sounding metal vocalists. Perhaps Iced Earth - Dragon Child or Nevermore - Insignificant. Even someone like Geddy Lee from Rush. Unique voices.
I would add Ian Gillan's astonishing performance in the Deep Purple song CHILD IN TIME. Every good top 10 Metal Vocal list includes that one pretty near the top. Beth would have a ball with that one.
As much as I am a way bigger fan of the material that Rob Halford is involved in I have to admit that Dio can outclass him. Eventhou Halford voice range is godly, Dio is just a beast on one another evel. Truly the best
It's a fair toss-up between Dio, David Draiman from Disturbed, Dee Snider, and Floor Jansen from Nightwish. That is a vocal fight I'd have loved to witness.
I don't know how healthy Dio's distortion was, but he made it work throughout almost all of his career (started as a crooner very young, but it wasn't long until he was singing hard rock first and then heavy metal). Never seen this performance before, loved it and loved the analysis!
I mean, the guy managed to sing all the way to his eventual demise without even slightly losing his voice. If that's not praise worthy, i don't know what is =P.
He was at least in his early 40's when he did this. He never lost any of his range. He was performing into his 60's. I'm not a metal fan, but he had some kind of voo doo that only comes around once in a while.
