Thom Yorke is a genius. Geniuses bend and venture outside of generally accepted rules through use of innate intuition and creative vision. The world is a slightly better place thanks to his music.
This is a song about the ocean and life all around him as he swims. ("Turning and somersaults.") He created this amazing, watery atmosphere with layered loops, with varying rhythms that shouldn't work together, and sings of what he sees ("a giant turtle's eyes. Jellyfish float by.") spliced with what he feels. I also think Thom is particularly proud of this one. He likes it. He's constantly revisiting and remaking it.
I found radiohead in 97, tried hard to find something new and better over the years, have enjoyed loads of other bands and artists but no one can every compare
As far as bands go.. yeah, no one beats them. But have you heard any Brad Mehldau? Jazz pianist, his trio recordings are amazing. Check out his album Day is Done. Or any of his many Radiohead covers. Beautiful stuff.
I guess it's a matter of opinion-dont get me wrong, I think Radiohead are BRILLIANT, even the songs I'm not so keen on, but personally I don't like saying no other band can ever compare because I love bands for different reasons. Except Mogwai. No bad can ever compare to them 😉😁
Street spirit (fade out) is one of those songs which is towering in how wonderful it is without having to bash you over the head. One of my favourite bands Mogwai do the same musically (they rarely have lyrics)-full of so much emotion but don't need to have neon signs pointing the way
@@gombles totally agree, Scotlands shame is an ace song, I adore new paths to helicon pt1 but it's one of those songs that's probably requested a bit too much lol I love their come on die young album but apparently that's the album they like the least-no accounting for taste haha finally saw them in Edinburgh last year after 15yrs finding a chance although I live in Scotland too lol
Kid A wasn't that highly regarded initially, despite charting/selling pretty well and then people caught up with Thom enough that they could appreciate it and now Kid A is regarded as a masterpiece. I'm sure the same thing will happen with King of Limbs too.
I'm glad there are people who love it. I'm not one of those. This is one one of the few I like from it. This is one of the best Radiohead songs in my opinion, just not a great album as a whole. One day maybe I'll get it!
when you said “it’s very cinematic” i was wholeheartedly agreeing with that statement cause that’s all i feel when i listen to Thom or a Radiohead album. it’s also no coincidence that their music videos are of the same quality.
I can see it in your eyes, the melancholy and memories of hurt that the piano notes bring up and the tears you're holding back when Thom starts singing. You have a large encompassing heart
Love this video. Thom is an musical angel, he reaches deep into a rough ocean of human emotion, the trauma of human existence, and pulls out some sounds that you've never heard before. He creates worlds that we've all felt inside, but never sensed from any outside source, until his music.
More Radiohead please. Radiohead is the one thing that's impossible to overhype or overindulge... It's song writing and performing at its peak. So thankful to live on the same timeline as these gents.
When you said him being surrounded by life and being in the middle of it all, Bloom is supposed to sound like he’s underwater. Like he’s surrounded by the beauty in the ocean. Similar to Radiohead’s Weird Fishes/Arpeggi in the musical flourishes that sound like waves or waterfalls.
I absolutely love how you do *not* judge. You understand and share your professional insights, but you always respect the artistic integrity of the singers you comment on. And I admire how you (almost) keep your emotions at bay.
I haven’t really discovered Radiohead until relatively recently but discovering them has been such a great experience. At first it’s a good band with some killer rock tracks and some great electronic music but as you get into it more and listen to it more you’ll love it more and more and you’ll see more and more how perfect their music is. Everything they make is thought out in so much detail and I just love everything about them
Wow, it’s the first time I ask for something to a youtuber and there you have it! I guess It was just a coincidence but anyway, thank you @bethroars. Radiohead is the best band in the world and Thom’s Voice is pure emotion.
@@spiritualconnection4807 it's overall quite hectic, when you see them playing that song live the drummer always looks like it's about to pass out also he has to sing in a lower voice at the beginning that I'm not sure if he can still pull out
His Voice has a mainline right into my feels just like Roger Walters. He could literally sing about a dropping a cheese sarnie on the floor and I'd be in bits. Was great to hear your more informed opinion on his singing or emoting. My favourite vocals are on Electioneering and go to sleep.
You nailed it straight away, it's not about his technical ability but the combination of emotion and atmosphere in his voice and music, it either completely floors you or it doesn't. It gets me every time.
This earnt you a sub. I was moved by your instant connection as I was the first time I heard this rendition. You captured what makes his voice so iconic and spectacular in a way that I never could. Thank you.
Seeing Radiohead live and growing with them has been a complete pleasure. Heard them in 1994 n followed everything they done. Each and every time I seen them, they blew me away. A special group of musicians. Beth is spot on those emotions are flowin
Thank you for not ripping him apart here. This is an amazing chance to hear is ability to put forward to hear how his voice has MATURED through the years. So different from even when this song was in an an album. He has greatly improved with his confidence.
And he makes it seem so completely effortless. Thank you for this video, you've helped me understand exactly why I've loved him so much for so very long.

As someone who’s trying to learn how to write about music, lots of really cool and useful vocabulary in this video. I really like the way you talk about it! And I love Thom Yorke!
I am so happy to have discovered this RU-vid channel. It was always hard for me to explain to someone WHY I love a specific singer or a band. Now I can point to this channel. You put in words my feelings when I hear someone sing or a band play. A heartfelt thank you.
When the feelings or pain is too much, you can't form words. I can guarantee his beautiful vocalizations are because he can't form the feelings into words. we cry out in joy and grief...
This shows the greatness of life. I have no interest in his style/digital stuff, but obviously lots love it. Different strokes. That's what makes life great. Maybe in the right setting and frame of mind, it would make a difference.
Listen to “subterranean homesick alien” very loud to truly appreciate the uniqueness of Thoms vocal, and henceforth the quality of this band. Breathtaking 😉
I really enjoyed every second of this video. I was wondering if you would ever make a reaction video about Radiohead, and it turned out to be Bloom, one of my favorite songs. I loved your reactions and your way of describing them. You are doing an amazing job.
beth i love you. really enjoy ur stuff. but you hit the nail on the head with doing a segment with my fav of all time band RH. cheers for this. subbed !
I'm new to your channel, being drawn here by the etherial Thom York. What a fortunate discovery! As a musician and teacher myself, I truly appreciate the care you gave to your commentary. You have a wonderful ear, and I'm looking forward to checking out your other content. All too often, musical training stalls at notes and rhythms. No real emphasis is given to learning about musicality, interpretation, or any deeper aesthetic. Thank you for going there, and thank you for teaching a difficult, yet essential, part of musicality. Respect!
He has a more subtle voice than before even it’s less powerful than the 90’s era. More expression and sensitive right to your heart. Thx Beth and thx Thom.
This is actually exactly what many people said when him and Radiohead started producing music, Thom heard about this and started listening to him soon after and became a big fan. This eventually lead him to singing "After the Gold Rush" live for a charity concert, in which Neil Young told him to play it on the piano he originally recorded the song on.
Neil Young sounds like an amateur... there's a few of his tunes that rub me up the wrong way for that, like they're trying too hard to be something grandiose.
"its very cinematic" I guess it wouldn't surprise you that he and one other band mate (Jonny Greenwood) have mostly composed movie soundtracks recently
This is lovely. Just seeing another fan with total awe of this song... kinda wish there'd be no click stops for the comments, it'd be dreamy just full play thru...
I would love to see a reaction video for "Suspirium" and/or "Unmade" from Thom Yorke's score for Susoiria (2018). Those are two of the most Blindingly beautiful songs he has ever composed in my humble opinion.
@@baselterkawi4758 the one in Blue planet is from hans Zimmer and Radiohead. The original is Bloom from the king of limbs by Radiohead. There is also 4 official remix by other groups released by Radiohead , also bloom from the basement and this one Lol
@Forrest Hunter Same here, I'm 42 and I never realised how good they were in the 70's until a couple of months ago. Supper's Ready could well be the best rock song ever written.
Listening Radiohead since The Bends. Probably my favourite band ever. Pink Floyd as a close second. Ok Computer on my top 5 albums ever. Back in 2000 when they released Kid A, i remember buying the cd and just couldn't believe what they pulled out. A complete 180. Unexpected. Brilliant. Genius move. In Rainbows another favourite.
