I heard the song earlier today on the way to work.. honestly thought it was catchy.. probably wouldn't listen to it myself, given a choice.. But on this video, as soon as she started singing I recognized it. If anything she's a master at "selling" her song.. if not her, then her agent/s, either way it definitely is catching ears.
She was homeless living in her car and working at a clothing store which had buskers in front. she really wanted to busk and sing. So since she lived in Australia you have to audition to get a license to busk. She got the license a year later after she auditioned and applied, so she quit her job and would put out something for the money the passerby's would give her and play keyboard and sing. One night some drunk stole all her money and took off, then another drunk tried to play her keyboard. She decided to pack up and leave, but there was a drunken crowd surrounding he who would not let her go and were booing her to make her continue to play and sing. Out of her frustration from that night she wrote this song. Really it is "sing monkey" but she did not want to make it personal, so she changed it to "dance monkey". Note the part where she says "dance for me" several times which is the crowd forcing her to sing, but then said "when you are done i will make you do it all again" which is what they did.
She’s **growling** like in jazz. A LOT of her voice seems inspired by Jazz music from like.. 50s America. But brought to a modern style. It’s TRULY unique.
What I love most about that song is how cheerful and upbeat it sounds yet the lyrics are talking about an abusive industry that bleeds you dry then discards you.
All pop musicians are autotuned, almost every production uses it to some degree to make sure the song is perfect for the recording. It doesn't make someone who can't sing able to sing, most noticeable uses of it are intentional. T-Pain for example can sing, and has shown this live on stream from twitch. It's pitch correction, that's all, check out RoomieOfficial and his explaination of what autotune is and isn't.
What you miss I'd her crying in between her songs cause she was soooo grateful and blown away that she was even at this event only a couple months after being noticed. Biggest crowd to a first time performer at splendour
I thought it was really auto tuned and I was annoyed because of that, but then I realized when I saw it live, it wasn’t. So, I felt more appreciation and am so crazed by her voice!! edit: the fact that people got mad at this is funny, i now don’t really like the song considering it has been two years i still think the fact that she can do that with her voice really cool thi
Here is before see got famous singing on the street, i like how she catch the audiance and she made all of it herself, it not a big production as moste todays music its from her heart "Sorry for shaking movie... don’t know the name of the song...but " ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5OlAjhSbIcs.html
Tones and I telling the crowd going down kinda reminds me of Chris Martin (fr Coldplay) telling the audience to go down before the beat drop of "Adventure of a Lifetime"
Only heard this song on the radio. Had a huge smile on my face the entire performance. Looks like she's loving it and having so much fun & the crowd feels the same. Why am I crying?
She takes her vocals to places that most singers wouldn't even think about , that's what makes it unique , and she can sing quiet soft and sweet ,but then comes across with burst that are quiet raucus .A great young singer who can match her recordings with a live performance .
She was living in her van in Australia and busking, then everytime she performed crowds got bigger and bigger and then success , she is a sweet shy young woman and I love her I'm an Aussie 👍
Honestly the more people support rubbish like this the more the standards of music drops (not that it hasn't already). Golden era of music was 70s-90s and now we artists like this sounding like 5 year olds trying to string together a sentence.
I'm 40.....don't care about new music out there... I just listen to my 80-90s play lists... Bbuuutttt.... The other day I heard this song on local radio while I was in a store and ooohh my gosh.... It blew me away!!! I was so happy just hearing this tunes that I had to "Shazam" her right away!!! It's my new "feel good" song ❤️ Greetings from Ecuador 🇪🇨 🤗
Chibi Hoshi...42 her and I like her voice ALLOT...I prefer BAD CHILD!... Pretty deep song and the beat hits so hard! Especially when that corus drops! Rebecca should of reacted to the Cartoon Music Video of Bad Child OR a live version of it...THAT would of been cool. 😎
Not my kind of music, but there's something about seeing a young fellow Australian getting the spotlight that makes me feel so proud of her. Do any other Aussies get that?
"Ooooh Mother ... of Pearl" another classic from the Rebecca school of dont say swears, that one racks up there with "Flippin' chips mate". Love the Joy of this, the reaction and the song.
I am a great grandma in the US.... heard this in the grocery store and I was hooked, found the song online, found her, researched the heck out of her and her music. Even downloaded coreography to go with this song. Great Grandma hasn't moved much from her chair for a few years, but for this song I will move!!!
She has SO much control over her voice. But on top of that, she just has this swag about her. She doesn’t have to do anything but chill there and sing and it’s entertaining. “Dance Monkey” is overplayed, but every song of hers is a BANGER.
The best way someone could have described her voice! So many elements! Kinda nasal sometimes, kinda Jamaica style on the accent, and that raspy all way natural tone. The whispered notes, the crying, all in one freaking song
She sounds like a Star Wars background puppet character singing a song during a scene in a bar or something. I’ve been hearing this song during every appointment for physical therapy and it’s been like nails on a chalkboard for me.
I'm a 48 year old British Army ex paratrooper bought up on Dire straits, Pink Floyd and Led Zep. I adore this girl, what a breath of fresh air and as a late coming daddy to little Monty now 8 months, we bounce around like loons to this song. What a genuine nice down to earth person, I utterly love this girl. Dance for me monkeys xxxxxxxxx BTW, Rebecca you seem lovely too. I work from home in my little office and I played this at 4am to get me in the mood!!! Utterly beautiful. xxxxxx
@@JackTheGreat why is this creepy? Older middle age people can enjoy music and fanboy/girl over their favorite pop singers. I'm 34 and I think she's awesome, I love the confidence she has on the stage.
She is Toni watson of southern Australia, she was a busking performer, street performer, when she became a hit overnight for Dance monkey, she is said to be 26 despite inaccuracies on the internet. Rebecca, you're very lovely
Being an avid metalhead, I really hate admitting how much I love this song. Being a dad and lover of music, I annoy my daughter's by singing this tune instores constantly.
Metalhead here too, but I can appreciate anyone who is willing to do something outside of the box, this is definitely one of such songs. She plays her vocal cords like a guitar, like she wants to put as many ways to sing in the song, but it's not forced, it's not a show off, it feels natural, the song has its flow and it fits together nicely. And while being quite simple text-wise or musically, the singing is what makes it stand out of the crowd. It's frankly quite challenging to stand out today. Not many singers today are unique, and frankly many of them can't even sing without stuff as autotune etc. So I'm thankful for this. Also I admire her for the performance. She's a big girl, using so much air to sing and jumps around like a monkey during the show, I'd spit my lungs out in first minute doing all that. It's amazing to see an author that give so much energy to the audience, after all, they did not came to hear a song, they came for an experience.
Dennis Ferguson YES!! When I realized by accident that the Dance Monkey song was sung naturally by a girl, I looked up her other songs and just played that Never Seen The Rain version over and over. The tone, the emotions, the lyrics - just surreal.
I find it funny that there are a lot of videos of Voice Coaches trying to have a reaction video to this song and instead of analyzing it they just end up having fun enjoying the song. It is just so addictive.
I've seen her live twice and she is un-freaking-believable, I've also met her after a show in a kabab and pizza shop after one of her first shows in Sydney in a literal basement with a couple hundred people and she's so lovely. Her voice though, incredible!
@@rva I don't know how to tag you in comments. But you should react to this masterpiece as well: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--hPBt7ICpLQ.html
I love looking up vocal coach reactions. So many people get blasted. This young lady crushes it and the coaches react accordingly. She’s so talented and I’m really excited for her success.
I totally agree that her voice is unique in such a way that one can love it or hate it. But there is no doubt that she has some serious dynamism in that voice.
Very much agree with you. I was blown away the first time i heard her. I grew a bit tired of it though... Until i saw her live.. Her talent is amazing, when i heard it first, i was not sure of her consistancy. Singing like that, 6 shows a week is hard on your vocal. But her techniques are amazing. Just that little thing where she changes "time" to "dime" to give the vocal more power... amazing really!
Hi Rebecca! Just wanted to say I had the exact same reaction when I heard her the first time singing 3 words into the song on Jimmy Fallon I had to find out who she is. Such a crazy, unique soulful tone that hits you. Absolute talent. And I wanted to add you have the best reactions as you feel their voices and feel the emotions they invoke as opposed to others who feel they have to critique everything because they're 'a vocal coach'. Also you're just a lot of fun :D
I'm obsessed with this song, I really am. I literally can't listen to it enough. I just heard it for the first time yesterday. The video was freaking hilarious, wow. I love her voice SO MUCH🤗
I’ve seen vids of her in Australia performing before she blew up. Getting the beat going, getting the loop going, getting the smaller crowd moving. She’s great
Absolutely amazing performance. She had the biggest crowd of any act at Splendour in the grass history. She is the only artist I've seen that doesn't need autotune..
You know, I only just learned about Tones and I. When I hear vocalists/musicians I really enjoy, I always search to see if you have done a reaction for them. Not to be weird, but it's a connection, through music. Stay safe, stay healthy 💜
for some reason i’m thinking of edith piaf. nowadays i feel like her voice is polarizing because of how unique the tone is, tones and I reminds me of her.
I was thrilled to witness your reaction to this song. I have only known about this song for a week or so. How did I not know about this song before? Back to your reaction and precise analysis of her voice and her energy with this song. You accurately summed up so many angles and aspects of what she does with her voice. It was true delight to hear your experience with this song.
One of my good friends is signed to the same record label as Tones and they are really close, and I had the privilege of hanging out with her and watching her perform live in an intimate setting. She is so ridiculously talented and is such a down to earth person all around. Feel free to check out a little vid I managed to record of her just grooving: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d1Ro1uFhiWo.html you can really hear the raw talent come to light :)
I am a 60-year-old Aussie ex-pat in the Philippines and heard Toni Watson for the first time about a week ago and fell in love with her story, voice, and music. I am hooked like the world is now. Love ya Tones and wish you the world young dear! I loved your reaction too, Rebecca, mine was the same... :))
@@CS-kk4tm yeah her voice is cool, i respect that. it's just not for me. i wanted to leave a nice comment anyway, and i do honestly like her clothes. i didn't mean it in a shallow way, just a compliment. no ill will meant.
I like RU-vid creators when they make video about someone else's performance instead of using the current to make a video that is really just meant to be about themselves.
Ever since I first hear this song and Toni I was like she reminds of the singer my daughter introduced me to. I couldn't for the life of me remember who it was. Thank you for jogging my memory Tash Sultana...Jungle!
She has a great story, Aussie busker comes through and all that, one of my favourite songs over the last 12 months just beaten by someone you loved by Lewis Capaldi
You ever hear a song for the first time and decide you never wanna hear it again, but also know it's gonna be a huge hit and you're gonna hear it a hundred more times? That's a weird kinda respect to have for something.
I miss being young and having a shared experience like this. This crowd got to participate in the moment and feel energy that they will be chasing forever.
Alter Bridge- Words Darker than their Wings live at the Royal Albert Hall ft the Parallex Orchestra please!! You seriously need to see and hear this performance and be blown away! :)
I'm impressed that while she's a chubby girl she still has all this air and energy to jump around and stuff. She is amazing! The performance at Jimmy Fallon is also very great
Breath control and tones are what determine her singing oscilación. The right vowels and the right stanz can hide anyone’s distinctions. This woman is an absolute allegorical star.
@@novyjezkova3954 There is a psychology book by David Clark Taylor called the Psychology of singing. There are classes that explains the importance in laryngeal resonance and breath control. Signings application using modern methods in vocal science, in contrast to the old Italian method. I’m just giving the singer propriety attention where it’s due.
Seen her live in Manchester and she is just amazing. I cried the whole way through her concert and I even met her best friend Kurt and had a picture with him.
