You are in for a treat. Keep in mind that this is an award show performance, not a concert and it’s nothing like any award show you have ever experienced. Be prepared to have your minds blown 🤯😵💫🫰🏻💜🇨🇦
So true. Korea’s weekly music shows such as Open Concert or Immortal Songs are about same scale as award shows in US. I miss those cultural contents in Korea the most.
it *is* common for groups or artists to have longer performances, usually the biggest act of the show will get 20 minutes or so if memory serves, it is absolutely not common for one group to get 40 minutes, but this was at the absolute PEAK of BTS in Korea
You asked about choreo? They had one choreographer in the beginning, Son Seonduk, he's been with them pretty much their whole career. As time passed other choreographers joined, and they would engage outside choreographers. Sometimes they'd work directly with them, others they'd send in a choreography and Seonduk and JHope would work together to adjust the choreo to fit the members a bit more directly. Every choreographer they have worked with has said how great it was to work with them because they're so hard working and easy to work with, very humble, and so passionate about it.
Special shout out here to Sienna LaLau, who has also lead for this Dionysus performance, in addition to the epic Kinetic Manifesto which all BTS members have shared was their toughest to choreo to date. It's legendary on all levels; vocals, cinematography, and the chocolate is so complex with so many moving pieces.
Even Jimin adjusted choreo a few times from the very beginning like the tricks for the choreo for their debut songs were his idea. His dance style outside of group performances is more influenced by other choreographers since it is a different style. Naturally when they do someone else song they have done the other artists choreo, too.
Now you know that the American award shows look small compared to this guest performance by BTS at an award show. This made it look like a BTS concert within the MMA Awards night. You both should attend a Live BTS Concert to personally experience the energy everyone in the venue feels....it's EUPHORIA!!!
I've definitley noticed that when they perform at any American event, they have such a smaller stage area- yet they take the time and revamp their original choreography to fit in whatever venue they are at. They are true professionals. And they don't just phone it in - b/c they geniunely care about thier fans and want to give them a great performance no matter what. (Another reason ARMY is so loyal)
Wouldn’t it be great if a Western Awards Show allowed BTS to do what they do and not just perform one song? It will blow the whole music industry and change the DNA of the Award shows in the west. But of course, I really doubt they will give BTS that opportunity which is so, so sad really.
And this is why ARMY pay good money to watch BTS perform! The planning that goes into their performances is crazy detailed! The creativity is insane! BTS performances always tell a story. As for the choreo, BTS works with their performance director and a lot of external choreographers. I enjoyed this reaction video, thanks for this Throga!
Hey guys! Something helpful to know about Kpop award shows: Just like BTS concerts, Featured award show stages are a mix of pre-recorded stage performances (shot without an audience but "live" on the venue stage the day before) and live stage numbers. On TV, the entire set appears to be live, but the audience is watching parts on a giant screen that covers the stage. Here is how this one went. First song is pre-recorded, as well as the very first shot of the second song's stage set. Then the screen rises (not shown on TV) like a curtain to reveal the members in the same setting on the live stage. Second and third songs performed live on stage Fourth song pre-recorded at the venue and shown on the big screen to the audience The dance features are a mix of live and pre-recorded Most of the finale song's opening "Overture" is pre-recorded with some minor live bits here and there. The final scene of the pre-recording shows the members together again on the stage's final set. Like earlier, the audience (not us) sees the screen rise to reveal the members live on stage in the same positions as they begin the final number. A good way to know what's live is that you can see the audience. No audience shots = pre-recorded. When it all comes together it's a mind blowing and spectacular performance! Basically makes any show in the US look like a backyard talent show.
@@throga It's a lot to bite off and chew for your first group video. I stayed up all night to catch the MMA live stream that year, and the power of this stage is even greater than you realize. So why were all of us brought to tears as soon as we saw the set and costumes for the first song, Boy in Luv? We already knew they were going to sweep the awards. Literally everyone was glued to their screens in South Korea to see BTS collect their All-Kill. And ARMY was ready to see them be recognized without listening to media or netizens questioning their legitimacy for once. We were ready for them to get honored at MMA with a final stage. But we were not expecting them to start with a set, costumes, and original choreo from their first "big" concert from 2014 (attendance of 5,000 which was more than they had ever dreamed they could draw). It was a performance nobody but ARMY had ever seen because back then nobody took them seriously. Only ARMY had seen the music show clips, the Red Bullet Tour fancams. Opening with a 6 year-old song, with 6 year-old costumes, set, and choreo (that blew everyone at MMA out of their seats) was a message to a world that had doubted them, mocked them, dismissed them: "See? We have always been good enough to take all your awards."
@@throga the prerecorded parts are often there to give them time to change set and costume changes but also for stuff thats technically hard to do live inbetween everything like JKs water dance part or the horses on stage (wich with the audience there probably had been too much for them).
I have chills down my spine watching this performance again. I miss our pre Covid BTS eras. I invite everyone who doesn’t know to go and read the lyrics of Persona and research the meaning behind them because every single BTS song has an important message behind them. It’s not just some pop or kpop song, the messages behind the lyrics, they really make you question society, yourself and others. That’s what attracted me to BTS all those years ago. I wish there were more songs like this in western music industry. And that’s why BTS are truly unique and above the rest of the industry. They don’t just perform, they wrote their own lyrics, co-produce, co-create their choreos. They are just the best of the best.
I have to admit that I don't like it when someone values the work of one group over that of others. I believe everyone in the industry should be valued because everyone goes through the same training before stepping on stage as a group and we all know what hard work goes into the training alone. I do respect all groups equally. That's why I don't just follow one group I support several. 😊
Their award performances are usually insane but this one blew everyone, they also managed to win evzry single main award that year, SOTY, AOTY ALOTY and Worldwide icon of the year. First ever sweep in history of the award show. What's worse is that they couldn't even rest and sit down after this cuz they had to get up every minute to receive each award, i felt exhausted for them like just give them a CHAIR ON STAGE it's easier 😂 they look like their legs were about to break In the end also, idk if u noticed, the backup dancers have to mive around the chairs where they do the hand move on that table, but the one that had to put jimin's chair was a bit late. Jimin was sitting on AIR like it was nothing and people noticed only when the fancams from the side view of the performance came in. That basically means they are prepared for every type of accident which means they don't actually sit their whole weight on it but sitting on air while dancing is quite... Insane.
They are all trained to a point that they can perform on just by instinct alone and Jimin proves that with his and the other members great conditioning and professionalism to pull it off successfully. They make everything appear so seamless during their chaotic entertaining performances.
They were trained with different scenarios/issues that might happen on stage. Jimin is also known for his insane core strength, he pulls up that invisible chair anytime he wants.
Jimin loves his strong thighs - and so does Taemin, it turns out. 😂 I love his invisible chair trick and it's amazing he did it in this performance so smoothly that even if you know you can't tell from the front... ...I also love that he doesn't fall off of invisible chairs 😁
Jimin and his love/hate relationship with chairs... when they were rehearsing this, he was sitting on his leg, because the seat of the chair put him too low at the table relative to the other guys. But hey, he has the insane core strength to pull it off so that no one will even NOTICE without the camera trained on his butt.
Some context we all learned recently! Yes, BTS have spectacular stages at award shows, but this was especially massive, it was supposed to be almost a send off? They released their album Map of the Soul 7 following this in early 2020, and were supposed to go on a global stadium tour following its release. Unfortunately, the pandemic cancelled it. What we learned recently is the break they're currently on for their military service, they planned to start that following their 2020 tour, not now. Instead, the pandemic happened, the tour was cancelled, and BTS stayed 2 more years with us to try to make us happy during the pandemic, and they continued to give us music and performances. But that's why this stage is especially massive, it was supposed to be a send off in a way, which we only leaned during Festa when they talked about how they were supposed to take a break in 2020 🥺💜
I had no idea the plan for them to join the military after the MMA legendary performance and after their 2020 world tour. I would assume it was a good time for them to go to the military then since the world stopped for almost 2,years and it would’ve been a good time for them to go finish the military and come back to continue as BTS but that is hindsight now plus we wouldn’t get songs like Butter and Dynamite and their BE album during the pandemic which allowed them to be more exposed to even more audiences to discover BTS, especially in western countries since they released 2 full English songs in Dynamite and Butter.
Exactly. I agree. That's why in this performance they do the old songs like boy in luv, I need u etc. Too and not only the new ones. Of course as per the original plan they were going to take a break in 2020
@@iwubfood1That's what I thought too, in hindsight - but then again, remember how frightening the pandemic was at the beginning (not just the beginning, but for two whole years before it started to taper off in the third year). It would not have been ideal to enter military life during a pandemic, in close sleeping/living/training quarters with a big group of trainees, instructors and personnel. Remember how strict the first few lockdowns (and social distancing rules) had to be. I think, apart from hoping that they would finally be able to reschedule that tour (which never happened), they stayed out of the military because of Covid as well. 🙂
Now that u mentioned it, I just remembered that JIN turned 28 on Dec. 2020. It was the max age one could delay enlistment before they passed the BTS law, right before his bday, and extended the delay 2 more yrs til age 30. So it makes sense if they had a tour then it would've probably ended before his bday and had time to prep for his MS but no one could've anticipated the pandemic then. It really ruined some of their plans. That's probably why we have contents released only now that was already planned and recorded years ago 🥲
I am 51 years old and my daughters' first concert was BTS at Citifield Stadium, Queens NY, back in 2018. They were 10 and 11 and the time, fast forward 5 years and we are still here! Welcome down the rabbit hole gentlemen once you fall in you won't be able to get out, so enjoy!! These young men are incredibly talented and you won't regret listening to their work. Be warned that the K-pop genre will take over your playlists since there are great artists who are producing amazing work. You have a great channel and I look forward to all of your reactions.
I just want to clarify because it sometimes causes confusion...although most of the solo features that you saw prior to Dionysus were prerecorded, that doesn't mean these performances weren't done live. The prerecordings were the ones *broadcast*, but most of the show was still performed as seen live. The only parts not done live on stage during the show itself was the horses being brought on stage (for obvious reasons) and JK's water dance (for obvious reasons). All the other performances were done live on stage, but for most of them (except Jimin), the prerecorded versions were the ones broadcast.
plus on fan cams you can see when JK's part came out - he literally was on the side of the stage watching the screen and did the whole dance - in perfect synchronization with himself.
21:19 "Let me fly" -- I am so impressed with the way RM structures this part of his verse. In Korean, he sings something like, "With the wings of Icarus you gave me, not toward the sun but toward you ..." and then he switches to English "... let me fly" putting "fly" on the downbeat for emphasis. How clever is that?
The individual performances you saw where remixes of their songs.. in order: V - "No More Dream" - Album: "2 Cool 4 Skool" 2013 Jin - "Danger" - Album: "Dark & Wild" 2014 Jimin - "I Need You" - Album: "The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1" 2015 SUGA - "Fire" - Album: "The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever" 2016 Jungkook - "Save Me" - Album: " The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever" 2016 j-hope - "Fake Love" - Album: "Love Yourself: Tear" 2018 RM - "Dionysus" - Album: "Map of the Soul: Persona" 2019 also the full songs were: "Persona" - Album "Map of the Soul: Persona" from 2019 "Boy In Love" - Album "Skool Luv Affair" from 2014 "Boy With Love", "Mirkokosmos" and "Dionysus" are all from "Map of the Soul: Persona"
To be honest, I didn’t expect my suggestion to be filmed as the next reaction when I first said it but I’m honored that you took it so seriously that you wanted to do it so fast 😂 I’m glad you and ARMY enjoyed watching it! It’s definitely a performance that pulled me in as a baby ARMY. And the Taylor song is stuck in my head too…😅💜
@taylormari I don't think i will be able to read your Twitter posts now without singing your name in my head. Every.single.time heheheh. You deserved a theme song 💜
Yes! We need a snippet to use as a Taylor update notification sound! Thank you for your ongoing (never-ending) efforts to share their incredible story and history, Taylor. You're part of the whole lore and history now. We appreciate you.
I've hoped for a chance to thank you personally and this is it! What you have done with your brilliant and exceptional introduction to BTS should be in the Library of Congress or something. You have enabled millions of people around the globe to discover the magic and the love of BTS. There is definitely a special place in Heaven (as you choose to define it) for you and Army will see you there! Much Purple Love💜💜💜
"Is it a common thing for a group to have this kind of staging?" Among South Korean groups, BTS were the first ones to bring out these very elaborate stages with a lot of production and many backup dancers. But as with anything BTS did, the kpop industry was quick to follow and start to do the same ...or try to, at least. (Source: I've been watching kpop shows and generally following the industry since 2015)
@@6468May as much time as BTS? Lmao are you kidding me? BTS might be the one with no time on their hands unlike other groups, don't you know how much of a hassle it is? They do it all in the minimum amount of time they have because they want to, for themselves and for Armys. Also this is not something to brag about because it is concerning imo but they don't even let their sickness come inbetween their performances unless it's physically impossible for them to perform. There is a reason that they stood out among the crowd of all already known kpop artists, it's because of their want to be better, to do better even in a limited amount of time. I think you worded your comment a bit wrong.
@@FirstTimeWithBTS What are you talking about lol. I’m not sure you understood what I was saying but okay. You had a lot to say about something. Not quite sure what though
2019 was my first Asian award show season, and I got up at 4 am here in Florida to watch. I was like, we are so jipped with ours ,the Scammys, etc. Mikrokosmos was pre taped, with AR visuals, and parts of the solos as well. But THIS performance, as a westerner, just blew me away. So much to explain. Artists at these shows perform 2 or more songs, or medley but they aren't rushed. All the groups get a chance to shine. BTS was/is different. They went from getting cut from broadcasts to making a whole award show theirs. I've not been impressed with American TV or shows, of any kind since. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. They are our kings.
There are good and bad things in comparison with the music industry in the west and kpop. Kpop tends to be more cohesive in their goals with companies invested in their artists training until they make their debuts that brought us BTS. Western mainstream music artists are geared towards more independent artists in that music western industry. With everyone going in too many different directions, you won’t get the type of epic performance from the biggest artists at award shows like back in the 1980s and early 1990s from the likes of huge artists such as Prince, Madonna or Michael Jackson.
Yes Johnny- that was World Wide Handsome. Good eye! Oh in the Dionysus song- WWH Jin does the low and high notes. He even does a "rock" scream at the end. There's a great story about that scream. Jin can hit some seriously high notes especially with their Japanese songs. One is Crystal Snow where Jin does a triple high note. 😊
I’m glad to see that you’re so absorb in their performance. I’m a 56 year old Army and I love BTS. I went to the Vegas concert and I can tell you as a product of the 80’s, BTS’s concert blew everyone that I’ve seen away. It was non stop fun and cheering for 3 hours. I never sat down. You left that concert feeling so joyful. I couldn’t wipe the smile from my face. I met people from all over the world. Young & old army bonded and took pics with each other. It was awesome.
Johnny, correct! They played "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" in the video package right before the Dionysus medley. Emmanuel means "god-with-us," therefore the song is announcing BTS as 'gods among us' before they each portray Greek gods. Also BTS later explained that this performance was meant to be their last before beginning Chapter 2 and enlisting in the military. When the world changed in 2020, they chose to prolong their group projects to bring hope to the world. So, they really meant to go out with a bang and a message about their top-tier status in the music industry.
Each individual is dancing to one of their songs. Jimin , the one with the scarf was a contemporary dance major. Everything was live except the water dance.
For this whole year of award show performances (this performance included) BTS were doing a mixture of their older songs (like Boy In Luv - from their 3rd project/3rd EP Skool Luv Affair) and the songs that had come out that year and were nominated for awards (like Boy With Luv and Intro:Persona - from their 14th project/8th EP “Map of the Soul: Persona). By performing their older hits they were teasing/preparing us for one of the themes of their next full album that they would drop a few months after this performance called Map of the Soul: 7 Edit: I should preface the “xth project” part is only including their Korean albums. They also have 7-8 fully Japanese albums and a few English singles
J-Hope is the Dance leader, and he is in charge of their stages, so I'm sure he works with the choreography team, and he has said that they will adjust the choreography for their needs, and also add his own. And there is input from the dance line as well. And Yes, BTS is the exception, as far as I know. They tend to make the award shows their concerts. I heard that in order to have their visuals, it was over $500,000 to put it together. I think some of it was pre-recorded. YES, Grammy's are dull in comparison, but BTS performed their and it was the best Grammy performance ever.
yey! can't wait. just wanted to comment this before the premiere if you don't mind... here are setlist and concept for the MMA 2019 perforrmance so you'll know and understand the production: Songs: 1. Intro: Persona 2. Boy in Luv 3. Boy with Luv 4. Mikroskosmos 5. Solo stages where they perform to remixes of their older songs: - V = No More Dream - Jin = Danger - Jimin = I Need You (Suga plays the piano solo for this ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JyHaRCMbx6A.html) - Suga = Fire - Jungkook = Save Me (the MV for this was done in one continuous shot, it's really cool!) - Jhope = Fake Love - RM = Intro of Dionysus (which they performed as the finale) Each member represented a Greek god: V - Apollo, God of the Sun Jin - Ares, God of War ( or Athena, God of Wisdom) Jimin - Artemis, God of the Moon Suga - Hephaestus, God of Fire JK - Poseidon, God of Sea J-Hope - Zeus, God of Thunder RM - Dionysus, God of Wine And the lights that come down before each solo performance make a star constellation, the Corona Borealis, seven stars (for 7 BTS members) that make up the distinctive crown-shaped pattern. In Greek mythology, Corona Borealis was linked to the legend of Theseus and the minotaur. It was generally considered to represent a crown given by Dionysus to Ariadne, the daughter of Minos of Crete, after she had been abandoned by the Athenian prince Theseus. When she wore the crown at her marriage to Dionysus, he placed it in the heavens to commemorate their wedding. 6. Dionysus (instrumental remix of N.O. for the dance break)
@@throga Reactors think that they should follow a list. Ami has been there first and tries to leave a trail.. But Americans don't listen until they are lost. 🤣😁 I live in Idaho.....
@@throga That is what I meant in my comment, not that you don't read the comments but that it is too bad you couldn't read them while watching and get the answers right away. I do LOVE your reactions; you are so professional, respectful, and genuine. Will be soooo ready tomorrow 8:00 a.m. Borahae 💜
@Throga Guys I am 56 yrs young and have seen them in concert plus went to see Yoongi (Suga) this past May for my bday (a gift from Me to Me!) & I've got to tell you their concerts are the Best! Growing up as a teen in the 80's was a great time, went to many many concerts, at least 50, and none come close to BTS! Their energy, performance, connecting with their fans (ARMY), EVERYTHING FROM BEGINNING TO END, Very well planned, rehearsed and performed! I love them, they have enriched my life in ways nothing else ever has! You gotta catch 'em live next tour when they return from Military Duty. Good seats are pricey but well worth it!
A nearly 40 minute magnificent theatrical Broadway-ish type of musical performance with horses (!) of over a dozen of their songs in an Award show that can be expected from no other than the one and only Bangtan Sonyeondan.
Wow, you went straight to MMA 2019? I bet you got overwhelmed! 💜 Thank you for this reaction. Looking forward to watching this! All of the songs they performed in this award show is worth looking into and reacting to one by one. In your next reaction of any BTS song, would you be able to do your reaction in sections: First, Lyric Video, then Music Video, Live Performance, then Dance Practice. In that way, you get the full experience. 💜
I don’t remember how many times I’ve watched this set but many and it will NEVER get old. Jaw dropping every time. They are simply amazing singers, rappers performers & more importantly- human beings. Another moving more recent performance is PTD concert Blue & Gray into Black Swan. Stunningly beautiful.
K award shows would give longer time slots to the big artists, but time given to BTS is waayyy looongggger, especially this MMA 2019! BTS always make the audiences & other artists jaw dropped! The production team just went all out just like any of their concerts. The members also being very consistent of giving the best & not want anyone to be disappointed in every performance. It might not be their intention but I think it's them showing the world they/re from a small company & once being cut from shows or even not invited got to this level that no one can imagine. They really are born for the stages, which is also why covid period hit them so hard when they cannot perform & see ARMY.
MMA 2019 definitely one of my favorites! They are amazing artists and yes the Grammys pale in comparison to these award shows!! Jimin especially blew me away during his live solo performance! I’ve been hooked ever since!
47:17 Thats the most raw and heartfelt compliment given by nonarmny reactor so far. That just shows how dedicated you guys are towards BTS and Army's Thank you guys💜
I actually got emotional rewatching this with you guys. It feels like forever since I’ve seen all 7 of the boys together. They really are something else. I absolutely adore their solo work but man…together they are unstoppable.
They prepared this stage in the middle of a world tour, fan meetings, local and international promotions in 2019. The section where they were like introducing them 1 by 1 was a homage to all their past albums and remixes to their old songs. Member/Title/Album/Year 1. V / No More Dream/2Cool 4 Skool/2013 2. Jin/Danger/Dark&Wild/2014 3. Jimin/I Need You/HYYH pt.1/2015 4. Suga/Fire/HYYH:Young Forever/2016 5. JK/Save Me/HYYH:Young Forever/2016 6. Hobi/Fake Love/Love Yourself Tear/2018
No matter how many times I watch this, alone, with friends, with other reactors, the hype from Persona, Boy in Luv, Boy w/ Luv, Mikrokosmos, the wonder from the solo numbers, and the eventual shiver from RM walking and the reveal of the 7 gods never ever fades. ❤️ I'm glad yall enjoyed it!
Hey Army! How many of you were gleefully grinning, thinking, "They have no idea what's coming, do they?" This is so exciting to witness whole new legions of fans discovering the sheer genius of BTS. It's hard not to be a little jealous as they experience the thrill of seeing these iconic performances for the very first time, isn't it? So many things to answer, but one that most others might not mention is that the 🎤 and ear pieces aren't just colour coded, but Jungkook himself was responsible for creating all of the engineering specifications and sound aspects for each mic, custom made for each band member. With his perfect pitch, responsibility for most of the guide tracks, plus his intimate familiarity with each member's range and abilities, he took the lead in constructing the requirements for each to best showcase the members individually. There is a piece of seldom discussed BTS knowledge for you. 💜
Yes! Literally just left a comment saying it makes me smile seeing people watch this for the first time, being blown away halfway though! I was the same way the first time I saw it. The whole thing completely blew my mind, just staring blankly at the screen for a good while after it was done, wondering what I just witnessed😂 and now I’m here smiling, thinking «oh, you haven’t seen anything yet😎». LOVE IT!💜💜
@miso_meow We'll have to ride along with them on this whole discovery adventure. I swear I got choked up near the end, just blown away all over again by their hard earned ability to impact so many people. Bet you know what I mean? That swell of pride as we watched those Kings being genuinely appreciated during this? (Typo edit)
Good approach to getting to know their discography: each album has a strong theme and flavour. It will be interesting for you to see their development over the years. You would be seeing them grow from teenaged boys (2 cool for school) immersed in Hiphop (Dark & Wild) to sensitive young men (The Most Beautiful Moments in Life/HYYN) exploring issues (Wings) (Love Yourselves Trilogy) to who they are as artists exploring their identities (Map of the Soul: Persona & MOTS 7) just before and during the pandemic (BE & PROOF) and now (solo albums). You have such an exhilarating journey ahead!
Great summary of their albums and trajectory! To the reactors: definitely recommend "Danger" and "Rain" from their Dark & Wild album (if you're only doing 2 songs per album for the time being). For an album like "Love Yourself: Tear" - how could you choose just two, haha? For your channel specifically, I think you'd appreciate songs like 134340, The Truth Untold, Outro: Tear, Louder than Bombs, Singularity, Am I Wrong, House of Cards, Blue & Grey, Lie, We are Bulletproof: the Eternal (all from different albums)...
I’m looking forward to this journey with you. I marked my one year anniversary of following BTS this month and watching your expert reactions along with the incredible information provided in the comments by Taylor and Army has been so interesting.
@Nilaratna OH, I love that you assigned a lot of weight to Tear. I also hope we get to ride along as R&J inevitably get drawn into the entire origin story of Tear. That was the soundtrack of the most pivotal moment in BTS' entire history. Well played.
This performance is one of the best introductions for BTS as a group! It shows how good their teamwork and chemistry is, as well as their amazing performance skills. It also shows a bit of their individual colors without letting one shine more than the others and that’s one of the things I love the most about BTS - they have the perfect balance between the members and they all compliment each other. They prepared this whole performance in just a few weeks after they came back from their packed world tour! They always give their best and I admire them for it. No other group was ever given this much time at the award show! The whole show lasts about 3-4 hours btw. Anyways, BTS proved they deserved it because that night they became the first group to ever win ALL four Grand awards! This was one of the best reactions to this performance, and I watched many. I love how invested you were and how much you payed attention to everything! Watching you guys really brings me joy💗 It’s okay if you don’t know all the songs, you’ll learn with time! Personally, I love it when people watch BTS perform on stage before diving into their discography because seeing their energy on stage as well as interactions with fans and appreciation for them shows a lot about how they are as a group! You have to know a bit about their core and energy before listening to the songs! It brings out the emotions better. Also, BTS are known for sounding better live than even on the recordings! I strongly suggest reacting to the performance of their albums’ title track after listening to it. That’s how you get the full experience! I really hope you’ll do it. B-side songs reactions can be in a separate video…. Anyways, thank you guys so much for your reactions to BTS! I can’t wait for the next one💜
They just released (on Amazon Prime Video) their free Yet To Come concert that they did last year in Busan. It was incredible to see live, but it is also really nice that they put subtitles for the songs for online. Please try to look into their lyrics more closely when you go through the albums...their message is a huge part of what makes them so special. Thank you for taking time to deep dive into their catalog and content. also the dance practice videos and Run BTS episodes are fun too 💜💜
During the whole performance, BTS were flexing their outstanding discography. All of it are their albums' songs, some remixed. Solo performances were showing off their superstar individualities - hence you see the 7 lights, coming as 7 star Northern Crown constellation, present in greek mythology - just like the god Dionysus. Other elements are also the veiled king, the horns, maenads... BTS conceptualism is really genius, you can break down their performances for hours.
Thanks for the reaction & there are many more to come....... Fact : BTS has the power to convert any award show into one of their concerts.... ❤💜🌸 Edit : I love how Richard kept smiling through the whole reaction.
Thanks for your reaction, 🎉. The dance practice of this performance is also on Bangtan TV. The award presentations where BTS performed live ended up being like their concerts. In MMA2018 where they do traditional dances or IDOL in MAMA2018 that they turn into a party, they are impressive. They can sing and dance at the same time because they trained as high-performance athletes with hypoxia masks (Suga explains this in Suchwitta with Jin and J-Hope), so seeing them live must be fascinating.
They have a main choreo director named Song. He does the direction but because Jhope and Jimin has dancing background, they both create together. Its very symbiotic.
This was absolutely mesmerizing, captivating and heart pounding. No wonder there have been times when one will faint from exhaustion. Makes me happy to be alive! The solo dances nearly brought me to tears. Such astounding talent in each and every member!🤯
I am glad you checked out this performance, even though I was not sure you were ready. After you see more from BTS, things from this show will make more sense. Something often said after watching this, who was up next? I mean who could be. 😂 This show/album had a foundation from the Jungian theory of personality development called Map Of The Soul. I love the nerdy inspirations these guys have from art, literature, and psychology. Note their incorporation of the "shadow" figures in the vcr intro and transition shown on the jumbo, a significant part of Karl Jung's theory.. Anyway, I am glad you had fun. I have seen this 2 to 3 dozen times and see more each time. You most likely will go back to this down the road and will enjoy it even more. Thank you for sharing your BTS journey.
@Throga-VocalGym - It is not common to have 20-30 minute performances by one musical act. This was specific to BTS. This concert was around the time they were the first Asian musical group to win American Awards. So this along with 2018 and 2020 performances were EXTRA special. The scene with the universe is Mikrokosmos and is a song to ARMY. If you have time, you should read the lyrics - they're beautiful and hopeful. This album has an influence of Greek words and Greek themes in it along with self reflection (Who am I, Who will I become). Mikrokosmos translates to small world. Dionysis is the Greek God of Wine and Pleasure. Did you notice the Trojan Horse that Jin entered on? So the featurette section in Dionysis had songs from their albums. If you noticed the flow from member to member, it told a story. This is my interpretation: You can dance thru life (V), but life will always have unpredictable moments (Jin on the Trojan Horse) and life can be beautiful at times (Jimin) but there are also times where it feels like you are in the fire pit (Suga) and crying out for help (Jungkook). However, the key is to keep moving forward (JHope) and take control of your life (RM).
They are great- right? Two trained dancers at the beginning ( Jimin and JHope) - the rest of them learned from hundreds of hours of practice. Watch Born Singer performance the lyrics tell their story in the beginning. Guys - these are all BTS songs- their big hits - benchmarks.
BTS started the huge production concept that is the standard for other groups. Other groups said BTS started the trend where back up dancers are added to create a massive production. So a lot of groups followed. But BTS production is level of its own...
25:16 So from my memory, by the end of 2019, it was like the apex of BTS’ career. I remember that year my mind kept being blown by how huge they’ve become, and if you know their history (working against/despite a lot of hate, mistreatment, industry discrimination, etc.) it wasn’t an easy for them to achieve success in the first half of their career. Anyway, they earned that 40 minutes of time at the MMA which I think is unprecedented for an award show lol. I’ve read a bit of their plans that week of the MMA. I knew that they would of course perform songs from their last album release which was Map of the Soul: Persona as one expects, but from what I read, Big Hit wanted to showcase each member by kind of spotlighting each individual that show their character/color. What was cool is they made instrumental/remixed versions of songs that they’ve released over the years since their debut (whether or not it ever got their flowers) during it. It felt like BH thought it was time for BTS to wear that crown in front of the industry and that not only unapologetically show they are a powerhouse as a group and their music, but showing each member is a star in his own right (unlike a lot of music groups that we know of, only one is a star/standout). Which they did actually, because they swept the all four grand prizes at MMA and the same for MAMAs the week after. The first to sweep grand prizes (aka daesang) for both MMA and MAMA. To me, it felt like there was a shift that there’s definitely no denying they’ve reached legendary status and that was only 2019. Kind of remind me a little of Gandalf the Grey in Lord of the Rings that became Gandalf the White lol. This is just on the account of my perspective at the time. Setlist: Intro : Persona (2019 - MOTS: Persona) Boy in Luv (2014 - Skool Luv Affair) Boy With Luv (2019 - MOTS: Persona) Mikrokosmos (2019 - MOTS: Persona) (like micro cosmos but replace “c” with “k” lol) Solo spotlights: V - No More Dream (2013 - debut song from 2 Cool 4 Skool) Jin - Danger (2014 - Dark & Wild) Jimin - I Need U (2015 - The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1) Suga - Fire (2016 - The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever) Jungkook - Save ME (2016 - The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever) J-Hope - FAKE LOVE (2018 - Love Yourself: Tear) The final song was Dionysus (2019 - MOTS: Persona) which incorporated a crazy remix of N.O. (2013 - O!RUL8,2?) in that crazy dance break.
Also, probably my first time hearing someone recognizing that piano piece lol. I recognized the Christmas song, O Come, O Come Emmanuel right away. I don’t know if they had a significant reason for that, but the mood of it fits the moment. MMA was on November 30th, it was sort of getting close to the Christmas holiday but I think they just feel like it fit the mood.
I really enjoy your reaction. I accidentally saw this video with English subtitles so it was easier to understand. Oh Nothing on BTS stages is ever a coincidence. The group is known to be meticulous to details… symbolic meanings. So this live performance uses songs from their different albums to illustrates their growth from frivolous schoolboys to young men. It’s easier to understand the storyline when one keeps Carl Jung’s theories on ego, persona, shadow and self… and ancient Greek mythology references(in its song and visual aesthetics) in mind. So they sang about finding joy in little things in life to reaching out to the world forming their own light, own star (microkosmos) and the progression of stars coming together … During Dionysian festival, a man sounding the Etruscan trumpet announced the procession and called upon the gods and their arrival… V: Apollo, god of sun 🌞 Jin: Athena, goddess of Justice 🐴 Jimin: Artemis, goddess of moon 🌝 Yoongi: Hephaestus, god of fire 🔥 Jungkook: Poseidon, god of water 💧 J-hope: Zeus, god of thunder ⚡️ RM: Dionysus, god of wine and ecstasy 🍷 Part of the procession on Geonosis stage: 1. Maenads were female followers of Geonosis 2. Big Panther balloon: the God of Dionysus rode sidesaddle on the back of a panther 3. Thracian horses. It is thought that horses enable people to make contact with feelings they’d buried deep inside their shadow. 🤷🏻♀️ 4. A group of Epheboi, young men, marching in modern clothes wearing fedora hats symbolizes present marching to future ? (The name “fedora” is derived from Greek word theodoros, which literary means - gift of God. ) 5. 10 tribal commanders and 3 concurrent Archons (magistrates) of Greek cities. It also includes a veiled horseman. This is a reference to Eubulides' "enkekalymmenos" or "veiled man" paradox/fallacy. The "veiled man" therefore represents paradoxical selves - whose persona you know but whose shadow you do not recognise. One light = one star, one god. Seven light, seven stars which appear as a constellation representing Corona Borealis- the crown of the Princess Ariadne of Crete wore on her wedding day when she married Dionysus. When the seven stars come together under the command of BTS leader RM (Dionysus, the God of wine), they partied celebrating life….
This was so fun!! I realized I’ve never gotten to watch this performance all the way through in one sitting, so it was fun experiencing it this way through your reactions. Loved when y’all go so distracted you couldn’t even react 😂 They’re mesmerizing, really demanding performers. You’re right that BTS is kind of that exception that gets this large scale of a performance at the awards shows (at least from the handfuls I’ve watched) but that goes to show just how much impact and reach they have. There are many good kpop groups but zero compare to what BTS brings to the table and it’s a testament to how they’ve established themselves this much. This is such an iconic performance, glad you watched! I hope you get to watch Yet To Come: Busan concert next!!
Ahh. You guys are a joy to watch especially love watching you discover the amazing world of BTS. They are just out of this world and their content is so deep. Their albums, music videos, performance videos, dance practice videos, choreography versions of their music videos, stage performances, award shows, and the story line that runs through certain videos. That’s not even getting their Weverse lives, their show Run BTS (not to be confused with their song Run BTS), their vacation/travel specials, and other misc. activities. Their are so good to provide so much entertainment and content for Army. You have just scratch the surface. Now you can see why Army can watch long reactions as we love to watch new people experience what we have with BTS and get to vicariously experience those “first moments of awe” again. We just love the guys so much. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us in 2025 especially as the younger members have really grown with their releases of their solo work. Now you see why we are not impressed by the Grammy’s any more. Asian award programs are outstanding and BTS performances are legendary stages even by their standards. I would not want to follow BTS after their spot. As a side note, there are larger KPop groups. These often have subunits in them. An example would be Seventeen which has 13 members. Even during BTS hiatus during their military service we have plenty of old content to revisit as well as new materials that they have prepared in advance. It will be crazy when all of them are serving but at least it is staggered so it won’t feel as long hopefully.
Loved this! I think you forgetting you were supposed to be reacting was the biggest compliment! I’m really enjoying watching you two discover our BTS. Aren’t they amazing? If you could sneak in reactions to some of their Run BTS episodes, you’ll get a chance to witness their loveable personalities and incredibly tight-knit brotherhood. Have a purple day! 💜
Wow, you went straight to the LEJINDARY MMA 2019 performance 👏Just gonna drop this before the premiere: It's okay if you didn't know anything about the setlist or understand the production in advance, I think it makes for a more genuine reaction. I bet most, if not all, baby ARMYs also went in blindly when they first watched this. At the very least, my fellow ARMYs have already helped by leaving some comments about exactly that (timestamps and everything, thank you!) and you can always come back to that later. What I do hope for is that you had fun watching it and hope you got the version with the subtitles on so you could at least understand what they're singing about. Can't wait to watch this!
Oh I love this, I just had to watch again. I laughed when you realised you had forgotten to react because you were so immersed. That happens in my life, I forget to be an adult (mortgage, parent, work etc.) because I’m so immersed in BTS! Thanks for having us along to share your journey!
color for mics and in ear are different for each member. JK is purple, V is green, Jimin is yellow, RM blue, jHope red, Suga black, Jin is pink. Lately, the colors have changed The thumb and pointer and middle finger is BTS' sign. If you remember Taylor's guide, Jimin was a contemporary dancer before he joined BTS. When they perform as BTS, their solos come from their album as BTS. Watch this again after you learn more of BTS. I think you have not explored the depth, poetry and lyricism of their songs yet.
Hi guys! Get ready for way too many answers: You asked how far back they’re pulling from: this whole production was basically an ode to the history of their discography! This was journey through their music and also meant to show their individual charms. I’m gonna go through all the tracks in this post so buckle up. The do multiple songs/snippets of songs of their discography, as I said, paying tribute to their past and present. Below, I’ll list the songs in the performance and years they were released. Persona - RM solo from the 2019 album Map of the Soul: Persona. Boy in Luv - Title track from their 2nd mini album, Skool Luv Affair (2014). Boy With Luv - Meant to be their 2019 response to Boy IN Luv (which was about teenage love) as they’ve grown and now have a more mature view on love. Mikrokosmos - The track is also from the album MOTS: Persona (2019). It’s a song for ARMY. The elements (the stars and planets) were augmented reality and all of the phrases on the screen that lifted were “I love you” in different languages. -Now the individual sections- These are instrumental/remixed snippets about a minute long each of a selection of their title tracks. No More Dream - Their debut title track from their first album 2 Cool 4 Skool (2013). (Performed by Taehyung (V)) Danger - Title track from their first full studio album Dark & Wild (2014). (Performed by Jin) I NEED U - Title track from The Most Beautiful Moment in Life (often abbr “HYYH”) Pt 1. (2015) (Performed by Jimin) Fire - The title track from The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever (2016). (Performed by Yoongi (Suga)) Save ME - Also first appeared on The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever (2016). (Performed by Jungkook) Fake Love - Title track for the 2018 album Love Yourself: Tear. (Performed by Hobi (j-hope)) Dionysus - The finale track is also on MOTS: Persona (2019). It’s the song they opened the with on the Speak Yourself tour. The dance break during Dionysus features an EDM remix of their song N.O that was from their 2013 mini album O!RUL8,2? No, a 40 minute time slot isn’t normal even for MMA/MAMA awards. It was a huge year for BTS and yeah, this is not typical. But when that horn blew, something shifted. They all had their official solo debuts in 2022-2023, but at the time of this performance, they had performed solo tracks on their albums and some had released some solo or subunit songs (like Jin and V’s ‘It’s Definitely You’) and Namjoon, Yoongi, and Hobi had all dropped (free) mixtapes at this point. I know that’s a lot of overwhelming info, but I hope it answered your questions and then some.
Can't wait!!!! As per the timestamps the reaction has already been recorded, so the reaction does not consider our comments 😞hopefully they will read all the very interesting information everyone is providing. I have seen this performance many many times with as many reactors and never get tired of it, and always learn a little bit more about it, so thanks to all for your comments. 61 year old ARMY mom from Colombia 💜💜💜💜
These songs are spread from all throughout their career, old and new, up to 2019. As for conditioning, apparently they run on the treadmill, whilst singing. The Scammys, sorry…..the Grammys, are dull in comparison. Yes, all the songs are their songs. The one you asked about with Suga and the flames is called “Fire”. The 3 rappers have had solo projects pre-2022 but they have all had solo albums in the past 12 months. Phenomenal performance, dare I say, too much in one hit. The guys literally sat down for 2 minutes after this performance then had to go back up on stage to receive the incredible number of awards they won. I really felt sorry for them on the night they were exhausted.
Thank you for your reaction to BTS! This is my favorite band. I admire the efficiency of the guys, their friendship, because they have been side by side for more than 10 years.
Thank you. Jimin solo was the only one done live because he wanted direct experience of live audience. He did not want to pre record it. The horses bit is also pre recorded.
I remember getting up in the middle of the night to watch this live on my laptop. The award shows seem to commonly have a run time of about 4-6 hrs (not including red carpet interviews, etc) BTS did perform last, but even other groups had about 15 mins or so to go medley performances of songs they chose to promote
This performance was so fun because ARMY were suddenly researching Greek mythology trying to figure out which God each member represented. Theories were being tossed around live. The seven lights being the 7 stars in the Corona Borealis / crown associated with Dionysus because all of the solo dances are part of the intro to the Dionysus performance.
Also the comment about the Grammy’s/Western awards shows looking underwhelming now…… LOL… that is so real. When BTS performed Butter at Grammy’s they tore the entire place apart leaving everyone in a standing ovation. It’s sad that the West still doesn’t take BTS seriously; there are really terrible ways they’ve been sabotaged but in the end we shrug it off because as this shows perfectly well, BTS are a whole world of their own. I’m stoked y’all are still in this rabbit hole!
Thank you for reacting to this! Yeah, their award shows have ruined US award shows for me LOL. Soooo, it is frequent practice for Korean award shows to pre-record segments of a planned performance to broadcast to ensure broadcast quality but also to allow the artist to change clothes or for staging to be reset. BTS has a habit of going ahead and coming out and doing the song/performance live while the pre-recorded segment is playing, if the timing of resetting things allows. There are fancams of the guys doing that for this show as well. Mikrokosmos was pre-recorded so some of the visual was post-production. And the solos were pre-recorded but the guys were on-stage doing it live in front of the crowd while the pre-recorded clips were played for the people watching the broadcast - the exception that Jung Kook didn't do his in water while waiting for the next group setting. The horse entrance and such was also pre-recorded and went 'live' when it was time for Dionysus to actually be performed, so no horses there on stage the night of the actual show. But yes, they absolutely sing and perform live and kill it every time. I am so happy when the guys are able to perform at US award shows because they always do such a great job, but I am also always frustrated because US award show staging and camera work is always lacking after seeing some of these from oversees (don't get me wrong, MMA and MAMA and other shows over there have had their drama with poor camera work in the past, but the US shows always focus on the audience for some reason unless it is a really big US star they want to give extra love to). Also except for Emmanuel, all of the music is from their songs, but remixes for this specific performance. Thanks again!
gosh. as much as i would’ve wished you guys react to this after you learn of the indiv songs played here (cause it was such a treat for army to experience the different individual performances to each song as well as the rearrangement of each one), there’s no doubt that no matter how far along you are in this journey, every BTS performance will ALWAYS ALWAYS be jaw-dropping.
❣️Jimin’s solo performance, wearing a modernized hanbok just fastened by ties only, had many different dance elements in it! Including the barrel leaps taken from Korean dance elements, some martial arts elements, (trained for 8 yrs in various forms w/blackbelt in Taekwondo), & of course contemporary dance. Also, equally ever so stunningly outstanding, was Jimin's scarf work, which is alone so hard to master, without getting that ever so thin veil of a scarf all tangled! Jimin somehow was able to make the scarf one with himself, using it as an extension, even at one point when he did that amazing jump leap straight up the scarf becoming his wings!! Jimin's whole performance was so amazingly stunningly beautiful. Just so effortlessly breathtakingly mesmerizing to see!! Though the other members did a version of their solo performances for benefit of the live audiences, for the broadcast version as seen here, viewer see the prerecorded version, that was prerecorded the day before, since especially JK’s performance in water with that heavy tank that weighed a ton wouldn’t be able to maneuver for live audience, as well as some of the other effects seen like for Mikrokosmos, also the part with the horses was obviously prerecorded as a safeguard for the horses. It also gave a chance for BTS come up for air as well as give them time to change. Jimin was the only one who didn’t have the benefit of prerecorded VCR, which meant that for his solo performance by the broadcasted version, viewers saw Jimin perform live only. While the broadcast version showed for rest of members the prerecorded version. But once again the live audience did get an opportunity to see BTS members do a version of their solos.
Aaah I am so happy fyr observations on Jimin's performance. I hv always marvelled at how he was so flawless without getting all entangled by the scarf. It was very tough choreography & even JK didn't realize it was the actual live performance.
I have no doubt that JK and J-Hope would love to do a live version as well, but the water and lasers weren't technically feasible for the main broadcast.
Once you guys get through more of their massive discography this would be fun to revisit and make all the connections and understand the references the way long time ARMY did watching this performance. Since they got such a long set they just went and did a whole remember the good times set lol
Thanks a lot for reacting to it.. enjoyed it! It Brings back memories of my baby ARMY days. I watched this award show performance for like 100 times at this point..not joking...I was a new fan that time and I think this was the first award show performance I tried to watch live from mobile and I was totally mind blown by them. Watched countless of reaction videos to it since then and not to mention all the watching on my own. This is one of the legendary performance which doesn't get boring no matter how many times we watch it and tbh all BTS performances are wonderful doesn't matter the length of show 😂 ❤
Yes it has only been BTS that has had this big a time slot, I honestly think that this performance even proved to some Koreans who doubted them how great BTS are 💜🔥💙
Seriously one of the the most amazing things is that this wasn’t even a concert. They literally just took over an award show where other celebrities and idols were present. If you ever react to a BTS concert (and I would strongly recommend the 2022 Busan one), they are on a DIFFERENT LEVEL altogether. No opening acts, hard going for 3 plus hours on end. Their mics are ALWAYS hot. It’s wild, it’s massive, a no expense spared extravaganza … and yet it’s still intimate in that you feel like they’re talking directly to you as Army. 💜👏🏻💜👏🏻
37 minutes of unbelievably rivitting performance from BTS. It was a greatest hits performance. Hard to imagine that at this point in their careers internally, they were struggling with a lot of issues and whether or not they should continue. We are all so lucky that they found the internal strength and the dedication to pursue and become the world class artists they are.
It was very nice to see the BTS presentation at the MAMA awards with you again, I will tell you that they showed it live on You Tube, while in Korea it was night on our continent it dawned, I will tell you that it was incredible, we were having breakfast, my family and I was glued to the TV screen until it ended, totally amazed, the ARMY is really very proud of them, they are amazing artists who give their all in their presentations like. Greetings💜
The background music is from their album. 😊 V - N.O Jin - Danger Jimin - I Need You Suga - Fire Jongkok Save Me J Hope Fake Love RM - Dionysus All BTS's songs
