My ingenious approach to EQ has always been to just move things around randomly until it sounds a little less crappy. I think I'll switch to your approach, Colin. Thank you!

Great vid Colin. Scanning those frequencies in the context of the mix is a vital step. The science behind EQ is fascinating too :) Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Have to admit that i've been lousy with eq on vocals since a couple of years back. The HPF is definitely necessary and most important and i always cut there. The rest depends as you say of the song and arrangement. Tons of instrument or a small setup. I learn more from you in six month than all the time until now from when i start recording. You're simply the best 👏👏

So far the way I have approached EQ is finding a tutorial on here, and copying their settings exactly. Obviously, that doesn't work out so well. As you said, each vocal is different and requires different moves to make it sound good in the mix. Knowing these zones to look at and how they affect the sound will be really helpful. Thanks so much Colin for all the videos you put out. Have learned a ton from you.

That’s awesome, Jay! It’s a tricky balance to not just say “every source is different” or to be too specific and tell you advice that might not work on your actual source. Glad it sounds like I’m striking the balance well!

Great video, thanks. The EQ that you make applies to the whole track or just to the selected region? If the lead singer vocals is all in one track, how can I eq different regions differently?>
@lizzie_calisto
@lizzie_calisto 10 месяцев назад
Do you do the eq for the main vocals and the harmony layers all together, or do you do each layer separately?

Great stuff Colin! Do you feel like different styles have different rules (for lack of better word) for what works best in regards to mixing? I feel like what works for pop may not work for metal. Would you ever do a video showing some basic ideas for different genres and how the differ from a mixing perspective?
@TheBandGuide
@TheBandGuide 2 года назад
Thanks, JT! I’d say yes and no. Generally speaking the concepts and approach for mixing is universal. There are differences but they are subtle and as influenced by preferences of the artist and mix engineer as they are the genre. I recommend realllly familiarizing yourself with your favorite mixes and using those to inform your decisions. But ultimately just trusting your ears and what you like. This is a big thing im currently teaching in my mixing course

Would be cool if you briefly mention mic set up (i.e. vocal mic type, preamp gain, placement, distance, ect.)
