I went to school for engineering, completed an apprenticeship under an amazing engineer, and mixed a couple tracks that were released on commercial albums; so I know all this but (9minutes in right now), this still has value to me.. I'm gonna save this video because it's a great refresher course for when I've been out of the studio too long and start making rookie mistakes or been IN the studio too much and get so carried away with adding artistc touches that I lose touch with the fundamentals.

I'm just trying to learn the technical side of music, been writing for ages... A lot of these guys are just awful at tutorials. You do a great job explaining everything, and NOT ASSUMING we have a certain base of knowledge. I'm literally clueless when it comes to this stuff, especially the terminology beyond just identifying what effect is what. Thanks for everything man and I wish you success in your pursuits Whatever it is you wish to get out of music

Yo I feel like a mastermind after seeing this! I love that you take us through the certain frequencies and give them a description like so I can say if I want to pull room noise I’ll head to these certain frequencies. And pull some from 200-314 to brighten and bring forward. Your descriptions. Perfect bro. So helpful. Thank youuuuu 🙏🙏🙏

I do the same technique to find frequencies I don't like. What I find though is that the human ear likes every change in sound. So I'll take an EQ change and say, okay I think that's an improvement, and I'll keep that EQ on the track. I'll then immediately leave for an hour, come back and listen to it, and my ears might instantly hear something off. I'll turn the EQ off on the track, and sometimes it turns out I took too much of that frequency out, or it affected the vocal in a bad way by cutting it. Another thing to watch out for, is some frequencies are fine but boosting them super high, honestly most frequencies sound bad that high so it's not an immediate indicator that it's bad. It could even be that adding a db to that frequency is good, but boosting it 8db for example is obviously bad.

Word of advice. If u have to boost something 20 dB to hear the issue.. guess what?? It’s NOT the issue. Leave it alone. Eq is one piece of the puzzle. Don’t overdo it. You have many many more tools to craft your sound. Namely, exciters, saturation, harmonics, compression, limiting, parallel fx, be resourceful and try things you may not think would work.
