Is there a useful relationship between vocal fry and fry screaming? YES there is! ...But it might not be what you'd expect. I get this sort of question a lot from first time private students as well as general messages and inquiries.
Vocal fry is a gateway to all sorts of amazing vocal sounds and sensations if you know how to use it correctly AND... The big one: How to combine it with other techniques and sensations! In this video, I show you exactly how to make good use of vocal fry while also getting rid of some of the confusion surrounding FRY... and fry SCREAMING. I hope you like the new lesson!

If I’m being honest with you, Chris: Out of all the vocal teachers on RU-vid, you are probably the only one whom I’ve listened to and actually improved my singing. I’d only expect this kind of information on a $30/month course, and you give it absolutely freely. I’ve been genuinely inspired and encouraged to practice everyday. I still thank God for the day I found your channel- thank u Chris, I won’t fail to acknowledge you when I become famous, I promise😊🙏🏻🥀

Fry screaming is a term I introduced in 2004. It is a non-periodic pulse register only like vocal fry in speech science because of its aperiodicity BUT VERY DIFFERENT because there is NO engagement of the aryepiglottic folds or false cords. Fry screaming is achieved ONLY by the engagement of the vocal ligament (mode 2) without the weight of additional muscular layers in the folds. The huge advantage of acquiring this coordination is the 5-10k hertz capability which is perceptualy much louder without the effort. I propose that this is because too much vocal fold mass/weight cannot pulse fast enough to create these higher partials. Another huge advantage to fry screaming is the seamless transition between pitch and noise. This is because everything occurs at the true fold source without constriction allowing more compelling resonating strategies. Constriction prevents resonance in the posterior vocal tract. The source of the noise is from the aryepiglottic folds colliding with the epiglottis- there is a big adjustment to remove and replace noise within a lyric. It is not incorrect if done with a stability between subglottal pressure and laryngeal position, but I have observed is def not sustainable for lighter voices. It's also harder to mix in a track without a ton of EQ. False cord screaming is a term I made up, which refers exclusively to constriction. There is also Hybrid, the term I use to describe when voice is making pitch in the anterior (front) portion of the folds mixed with fry in the posterior portion. Hybrid sounds like false cord but without the heavy lifting. Many artists have moved to this strategy by better coordination inspired by a need for heavy touring sustainability. The 4th strategy I labeled as "Death" because in the early millennium, bands tribalized sub genres of metal and that sound, comprising of blasts of air combined with a depressed laryngeal posture (ie Cookie Monster) Never meant to compartmentalize- I have observed that learning fry screaming and hybrid first will make the constriction strategies more sustainable. I love your vids- just thought I might clarify any confusion here🤘🏻

as a singer and voice teacher myself this is HANDS DOWN the best video I have seen about vocal fry and its relationship with fry screams. I have a neurological voice disorder called Spasmodic Dysphonia so for me my vocal fry is inaccessible when the "supraglottal squeeze" kicks in due to having the issue but on good days I can relax my voice down into the vocal fry register and can get a little fry scream going and it seems its getting more and more consistent as the days goes by. I have no issues with doing distortions, arynetoid distortions, even false folds screams but the fry scream always got me and I never saw any videos on RU-vid that personally helped me except your videos including this one so Thank you so much for putting out such great contents for all of us. Keep these amazing videos coming! bless you Chris! like 486 from me 🙏👍👍😀😀

This is my comment under another comment here. Figuring out that you should not be much louder than your speaking voice is another game changer. You can be louder sometims with some screams, but even the most brutal can be done quietly. It is how you don't screw up your voice long term. I was also getting major headaches from too much pressure from overprojecting. If anyone is struggling with high pitched scream sounds, like Black Metal specifically, it is done with the slightest pressure in comparison to the mid and low screams. I thought I could not do them since I could only do them quiet. And if anyone does not believe me they can go watch Randy from Lamb of God sing Omerta live. Pay attention to his speaking voice volume, and then his screams, especially the high ones. Done with very little pressure, and the mic and processing does the rest, even live audio, but especially the final product for an album.

Chris, your technique tips have given me back my confidence as a vocalist. I have stopped trying to progress for about six years due to frustration with mix/ belting. My suggestion is to really get the feel of Fry Distortion first. Never push, you will hurt your vocals. Probably will need to cough after an irritation in the back of your throat, that shouldn't happen. Once you get that feel, you will have your quite fry scream, then you could get louder with your support. I've used multiple videos to help get the hang of it, definitely takes time. Chris Liepe, amazing job with what you do!

Best way I can describe what you're talking about; sing a normal note and use the false chord rumble to ride the wave of sound. Treat it like a soft passenger. Like catching an egg in your hand. Finesse will keep you on top of the wave. I did it on accident when I was younger and I kept doing it and I can jump into a piercer any time I want no lead up.
@ArctorDarkly
@ArctorDarkly 3 года назад
I watched another video where you take our faces off. lol. Combine that and you get more finesse. Makes me laugh when singers mutate and twist their faces into demons. It looks cool I guess but it will work out better if you don't. Honestly it looks pretty cool when you can scream well without showing it in your face. People look at you like "where the heck is that coming from?"

In my experience, there is no isolated fry scream or false cord scream, you're always vibrating your false cord AND the back of your throat (which generates the fry). Sometimes you're giving more emphasis to the false cord and sometimes more to the back of the throat. For example, it's easy to do a low false cord scream, but its nearly impossible to get a decent high false cord scream... That's what made me confused about screaming. While I was trying to isolate either false cord or fry, I was garbage, I was pushing my throat. Once I realized that it's impossible to isolate one from another, I became a legend in a few weeks...
@chrisliepe
@chrisliepe 3 года назад
ABSOLUTELY the correct way to look at this! I talk about this exact mindset you're sharing in many of my other screaming videos. There's not a REAL delineation. It's all the same vocal tract! :)

Figuring out that you should bot be much louder than your speaking voice is another game changer. You can be louder sometims with some screams, but even the most brutal can be done quietly. It is how you don't screw up your voice long term. I was also getting major headaches from too much pressure from overprojecting. If anyone is struggling with high pitched scream sounds, like Black Metal specifically, it is done with the slightest pressure in comparison the the mid and low screams. I thought I could not do them since I could only do them quiet. And if anyone does not believe me they can go watch Randy from Lamb of God sing Omerta live. Pay attention to his speaking voice volume, and then his screams, especially the high ones. Done with very little pressure, and the mic and processing does the rest, even live audio.

@@vaderguitarplayer Interesting - I'll keep that in mind. I imagine there's also some development of musculature that needs to happen, through exercise. As in, even if you got it right, technically, the first time, it would still sound a bit meek, because you haven't practiced those muscles enough?

Great addendum to the video. Based on what you're saying, that's where a lot of pain comes from, when you try to raw scream, for the first time, cause you're ramming into the pure false cords, with no support.

@@vaderguitarplayer i am getting pretty decent at those screams around Bb4-D5, and you’re absolutely right. It was so quiet that i kept pushing more and my voice was cracking! It wasn’t until i chilled out and did what *felt* and *sounded* good that i started making progress. My clean belts are still shouty, but at least i’m doing the most dangerous thing, screaming, correctly!

I went from being able to do fry screams but since I got really good at false chords, (I don't get throat pain ever just a loss of breath), I can't get it down. Good thing I finished the video.

Don't know if that's from another song or smth but if it's not, ngl feels like that little demo for that video would be a banger of a song^^ Thanks as always for helping me, and the others, to get better at what we love to do and listen to :)

Very helpful explanation. It's really hard to explain these things in a way that works for everybody, and you're doing great! One quick question if you have the time to listen to it : is Ray Charles doing something like that in "Hard Times"? Towards the end of the song, after the solos, when he says "YEEEEEAH, lord, who knows better than I" (roughly at minute 2:10) I always wondered how he did that Metal-like scream. Thanks!
