Bro, the hack about positivity is so true. I'm still paying the price 25 years later (1995) for making a negative comment to my wife during a vocal tracking session. She mentioned it to a producer friend of ours last week, uuuugh!

That’s the spirit! Lol. I’ve heard using open back or semi open back headphones with singers can help with this, if they’re good singers and the resonance in their head is thrown off by the closed back nature of the phones. Worth a shot!
@germanbushin9723
@germanbushin9723 2 года назад
@@samchoate1719 That's a pretty interesting trick, gotta try that. But I think it may hurt the mix more due to the entire mix bleeding from the headphones into the mic. I don't even record in closed headphones, I usually use in-ear headphones, it's the only way I don't get any bleed.
@FLH3official
@FLH3official 3 года назад
An other old trick for singer managing: for some of them who have this tendency to go further away from the mike is to put an other mike behind their head, telling them it's for enhancing the recording, it's done like that in abbey road studios, etc etc... Well, be creativ and cheat. And the singer, trying to avoid to bump the rear mike with his/her head will stay in the correct distances.
@samchoate1719

Man I got on several band members for blowing the singers confidence once, he was very exp. at live work but all of them were new to modern production. Their from the old days of tape splicing. It's tougher psychologically imho as a singer you don't have an instrument to "hide behind" and I simply told them to not voice negative opinions unless they wanted to try to sing on the recording themself or let him play an instrument but it's not quit the same. Of course that's only from my perspective, an experience. I'm no vocalist though lol. Great tips thanks.
@StudioFanThess

If you do not have a pop filter, you can also place your microphone upside down, at a 30 degree angle, at the height of your nose, not lower, and have the singer 30 cm away from the microphone.
@TTSetters

The pencil trick is nice. Pair that with off axis and that's a good combo! The whole vocal pulling back drives me nuts! Keeping them at same distance and slight turn of head is super helpful. I learned that one a few years ago and it really helps keep that vocal full and not have to compress as much to regulate volume.

Here’s a tip that relates to monitor volume. If a singer keeps singing sharp, turn down the volume. If they are singing flat, turn up the volume. This will make them sing with more or less power which can sometimes affect their pitch. I also have a great way to get them to get out of a rut if they keep messing up their take, you have to come on my podcast though haha. Great work man. Love the channel.

As always: Great content, enjoyable presented. Thanks! I would like to add, that not only omnis have no proximity effect, but also Variable-D mics from EV (or at least the effect is highly reduced), and these are unidirectional ones with special air guidance. Well known are RE20 and RE320 and the more expensive RE27, but there are many older types you can often get quite cheap used: EV 664, RE10, RE11, RE15, RE16, RE18, RE50, PL6, PL10 (I own one, a cool mini version of the RE20!), PL11 and perhaps some others. Also, the AKG D19/Uher M532 has this contruction (the so called Beatles microphone). Keep on mixing!

@keithrowe1007

Thanks for this. Love the different spots in the room idea. And the pencil. I’ve heard of that instead of a PF, but not as well...duh. 6: always have midi piano, doesn’t have to be loud, in the headphone mix, playing the first note of each phrase a few beats before the singer starts singing, as a little extra guide, and watch your use of auto tune plummet. Some find it annoying, so then use a played and held chord, with the lead note accented. Then of course on playback and mix down the piano is muted. Try it. 7: I record with an LDC, and right beside it a ribbon, and sing between the 2 from about a foot off. Ribbons pick up tons of low end, even from across a room. Make sure it’s in perfect phase and then when the singer goes high, you can add in some girth from that ribbon mic. I’ve even ditched the LDC and used just the ribbon. 8: record with the 2 mics as above. Then do the Motown trick. The ribbon takes care of the lows, is hardly compressed at all, and has any reverb/delay on it. On the LDC you take away all the lows, compress the crap out of it (1176) and keep it dry as a popcorn fart. Blend to taste and put it all through another compressor or two, et voila. My $.02, worth exactly that. YMMV, don’t believe me, I’m just an amateur, etc.....

for the « s » problem, one trick is to fix a pencil or drum stick on the pop filter (I fix it verticaly in the center). I didn’t though it worked after trying it once but that’s because for it to work, the singer has to sing pretty close of the pencil. It worked for me perfectly with a singer with very loud and harsh S, those type of S you fight hard to calm with de-esser because there is lot of whisling in it.. (I think with french lyrics, the S are often a bigger problem)

These videos are great. Funnily I was taught (and have used) the exact opposite trick for getting the singer to be louder or quieter. I.e. I turn up the mix so they feel they have to sing louder to hear themselves; and I turn the mix down so they feel they have to quieten down a bit too. I’m not in your pro league so it may be that my headphones mixes aren’t very good, but I mention it for general interest as it can go the other way.

Great stuff as always, I liked the bit about how to talk with singers. It sure is important to make them feel confortable and I guess, not dwell too much on the edits and processing the track will have to go throught.

Yeah great ideas. Often had the experience in German studios that the producer always said: no not good enough, noooo that nooo that. And that sucks and turns your session into a disaster and takes the fun out of you. When I was in the studio for the first time in the US, I thought I was on another planet. Everything chilled out and the takes didn't take long. It makes a lot of difference to have a producer by your side who knows how to get the best out of you without putting you down.
