Dear upcoming producers, PLEASE TUNE KAITO CORRECTLY! I don’t like him to sound like a woman in her mid age or Kermit trying to sing too low... Vocaloids/Utauloids have limits and I think just being consistent is incredibly important

That’s why I love ‘In a Rainy Town Balloons Dance With Devils’ so much!! the robotic tuning on Miku and the distorted imstrumental makes everything sound so non-human that is terrifying and I adore that, that’s why I feel like it’s almost a completely separate thing from ‘Ward Room 305’ even though it’s its demo, ward room just sounds like an edgy song meanwhile the unfinished and rough sound of IART,BDWD just makes it... chilling, it really conveys the brutality of the situation the characters were put in even if the story is left pretty vague, but that’s what I love about it, you don’t have to understand the song to be terrified, just like you don’t have to understand how a crime was commited to be terrified by the sight of the body in front of you. that’s my piece on how ‘natural’ sounding tuning is not always the best route to go, thanks for reading.

A producer whose tuning style I adore but no one talks about when it comes to the best Vocaloid tuners is Tiara. Their tuning of Miku sounds like it has real, human emotion and breathing behind it, like there is some sort of human nervousness/ instability there that fits with the sad themes of some of their songs. They make her voice somehow sounds soft and also powerful at the same time, and I love how it sounds!

I remember when I first kyaami/cillia's cover of Fairy Tale by buzzG, and I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by how she'd tuned VY1's vocals. I think now, more than I ever did before, the tuning of the vocals in a song can determine whether or not I'll end up liking a song. Take for example, Natsushiro's Near (originally with Miku's vocals). That song hits all the right marks for a song I'll listen to for months to come--starting off with a basic piano melody, then building up from that basic melody with other instruments that hits you so satisfyingly when that build-up all pays off in the chorus. I loved the song, but Natsushiro's tuning of Miku's high notes didn't harmonise well with the song. It broke the song for me. Then Cillia came in and covered the song with Fukase (and Otomachi Una). When I relistened to Cillia's cover, it finally dawned on me that I value the vocals more than anything else in vocaloid songs, which is probably what drew me to vocaloid in the first place--that unique sound you can't find anywhere else, but as I grew up, I wanted more from that unique sound. Cillia's definitely the vocaloid icon for great tuning, but now that the vocaloid/utau and other vocal synthesiser programs have become more modern and improved--I think that good tuning isn't as rare as it once was. I can list off akem and ragey, both of which use utau more than vocaloid, whose beautiful tuning styles can improve songs tenfold for me. Akem's cover of MARETU's version of RINGO's ENCORE, is another prime example of good tuning fixing a song's flaws. Anyway, sorry for dawdling on for so long. Tuning is definitely something I value when it comes to vocaloid--seeing a video about tuning amongst your other video essays just forced all my thoughts to vomit out in this huge paragraph above^^ Your content is quickly becoming something I really enjoy watching. There aren't many channels out there that pick apart different aspects of the vocaloid community; it's just an absolute pleasure to find someone that enjoys vocaloid as much as I do and actively engages in vocaloid topics through these analysis'. Thank you!

So I never realized how seriously people take tuning 😂😅 I used Vocaloid in my latest album more as a storytelling tool, where Oliver is meant to sound like a robot kid anyway. Getting him to sound clear was the main thing. In general, I care more about my music production, mixing, and mastering skills, which is challenging enough. Tuning would just add a whole other level of stress haha. But in the future I’ll give it more serious effort I think.
@Neopets4Life494

I just found your channel and I love the topics you bring up. This is definitely a long comment, but how a vocaloid is tuned i think, is really important, especially considering music tastes. One of my favorite producers, if not my all time favorite, is Nashimoto-ui, who I actually "strongly disliked" (hated. I hated his music LOL) in my teens up until the last 3 years (im in my 20s now). And I consider his way of tuning Miku to be so unique in that he gives her a high-low raspy whisper voice with the more grunge/rock genre he goes for in his music. He's pretty hard to get into considering how jarring, ear-piercing, edgy, and even juvenile or blunt and rude, but underneath the song is something someone can relate to as well as take it as a lowkey oddly positive way of thinking (Jisatsubushi and Couple Decades Left To Live leaving me to interpret their last few lines as something unusually optimistic), something which I learned to appreciate the more I gave his music a chance. And what really helps sell the songs are the tuning in relation to how often dark in subject matter it gets (with some grim humor thrown in there a bit). An Idiot's Drug is an obvious one with low, raspy, and if you can keep up with the words while singing along (if possible even), you could be slurring the words. One that's lighter in tone is That Crappy J-Pop, which has Miku with, still, a raspy voice, but much clearer and brighter in tandem with the song's catchy beat that, much like a pop song, will drill into your brain. The latter song being, I think, easier to listen to than the former. Miku is distorted in that her tuning is definitely way out of her recommended range. I would liken her to a distortion pedal hooked up to a guitar. It's gritty and even ugly, but it feels raw. And I found myself liking that voice after a while. I watched a video on vocaloid a few years back that mentioned nashimoto briefly on him having overall terrible and juvenile music, something I agreed to only because I didn't like his songs. But kinda looking back at it, I just really liked Miku being tuned a certain way that similar across the board to me (i.e. life-like and j-pop sounding). I honestly think experimenting the way a voicebank is tuned should be encouraged because it has potential in yielding unexpected results. I see some people complain about voices being tuned a way they don't like, which is fine until they bring up the recommended tuning range and say to just stick with that as though it were the written end-all-be-all. As a fan of Iya-Iya Seijin because of the PDFT PV, it doesn't hurt to check out songs that re-interpret and challenge what we're used to. Those are just my thoughts and experiences with how I listen to just this one producer. I love Nashimoto but Yellow by kz is still probably my favorite Vocaloid song of all time LOL. Although this video is months old, I've really been liking your content!

The tuning in the original version of "Meltdown" by Iroha[Sasaki] is a great example. It's so echoey and thus lonely sounding. There's this slight metal tinge in screamed notes as if you can hear her falling down the reactor.[Which is metal in the artwork at least] The words and emotion are highlighted. And yes, I saw the clip in the video. I just think it's a good one to listen to for those features.

As much as tuning can really shape vocals, I feel audio mixing is more important. I'd rather listen to a poorly-tuned song mixed excellently into the instrumental than a well-tuned song that shoddily mixed with the instrumental

The point at 3:15 is so true though. For example, the songs sparks, DO U and tsunami aren't vocaloid songs, however they were all produced by KIRA and I could tell even without looking at the credits. Even the way KIRA mixes real people's voices sounds sounds like his vocaloid tuning, hell in DO U Kiara's voice sounds very similar to vocaloid because of that. Or how recently Love Live had a collab with Miku, and you can TELL just by the tuning that the two songs were made by Mitchie M and KIRA.

The problem is that 95% of producers don't even bother tuning, and their melodies are all over the place, jumpoing up/down and octave with no reasons why, and there really is no rhythm or rhyme involved, and most don't even fit the song they're placed in. My suggestion is to learn what makes a melody work and go with that instead of randomly putting vocals in a song when you really have no idea what you're doing. Also, learn from your mistakes and quit writing garbage melodies!

Another thing I love about Cillia is her ability to take a new, unpopular 'Loid and give it its first taste of fame and a warm welcome through her tuning. Sort of like adopting a child and introducing them to their new family. Two most popular examples of this are Otomachi Una (Melt cover, 2016) and Flower (Close To You cover, 2014). Like I always say, a cover by her can be more original than the original itself and if you listen close enough, you can hear her Vocaloid headcanons through her tuning (her covers have inspired a lot of my headcanons actually, it's thanks to her Close To You cover that I have a headcanon that Flower is in perpetual mourning). I also like to call her the Vivienne Medrano (VivziePop) of Vocaloid, because even though they don't seem similar, there's actually a lot that they have in common (and I'm saying this as a person whose favourite Utaite and producer is Cillia and who *_hazbin,_* pun obviously intended, supporting Vivzie since a little after her Zoophobia era, which was WAY before her Hazbin Hotel series). True, Cillia isn't an animator (well, she can do CGI animation and possibly animated the blink segment in the PV for her first original "Scattered Glass" by herself, but her animations are nowhere near Vivienne's and that's for sure) and Viv is not a musician (though she wrote some lyrics for "Inside Of Every Demon Is A Rainbow", made a musical to begin with, and has inspired quite a few REALLY GOOD fansongs), but both are independent and both SET STANDARDS. Vivz is officially called "The Queen Of Independent Animators" and Cillia is often called a goddess. Cills sets the standards for tuning, Viv - for art, which is obvious, even though both are AMAZING at drawing. Also, they had a similar impact on my life, since they both introduced me to many musicians that I love or used to love, for example Vivz introduced me to Owl City through her "Silhouette" animation, which I am forever grateful for (even though I don't listen to his music anymore, Vocaloid took his spot in my heart, but I ADORED him back in the day and his music and lyrics were a big inspiration for many of my old characters) and Kyaami introduced me to Niki and many others from the Vocaloid community. Another thing is that both are huge inspirations to me - Vivz inspired me to do character design and animation (I did character design before I discovered her works, but back then I didn't know that it's a thing with a worldwide community dedicated to it, as for animation, I became fascinated with it after seeing her work and decided to be like her in the future) and Kyaa inspired me to start singing Japanese songs (her cover of Melt was so cute that I just knew that I wanted to learn the song after I first heard it that day, and it was the first JP song that I learned to sing). And let's not forget that Cills tunes as smoothly as Vivz animates. There are also some minor things that the two have in common: 1. Both rock art and design. While I've never seen any original character designs that Cillia has done besides her UTAU Samura Tomi, I know that she SLAYS when it comes to costume design. I've seen Mikoto's outfit in "Scattered Glass" and Rin's outfit for her 2nd original in the making, both have this simplistic, modern vibe with interesting accents to spice it up a bit, which gives an interesting result. She's a very talented artist. As for Vivzie's design, animation and art skills, no explanation needed. Her iconic characters are one of the most important things that make VivziePop... VivziePop. 2. Both stan at least one anime. Cills covers anime OPs sometimes or shares the ones she's currently watching. Vivz, despite the fact that she stated that she's not big on anime, has done Kill La Kill fanart once, implying that she liked that one at least a little, There are also rumors that she likes BNHA (one of the VAs that works for her actually voiced a character in that show), but they were not confirmed true. 3. Both live in California, though Vivz is not from there, she's from Maryland. 4. They're both physically pretty. Thanks to everyone who read through this essay on Vivienne and Cillia, I appreciate it a lot.

Maybe its just me, but I don't like most of Kyaami tuning. I dont know why. But I must admit her ERROR cover with Ritsu is amazing. My favourite Ritsu cover is Yuragi, using Ritsu Kirei voicebank that makes just a little bit either more manly, or deeper. I don't know how to describes music. X,D

i understand what you mean. sometimes vocals being realistic but not real enough can fall to the uncanny valley. i do like some of her works but sometimes the power of vocaloid songs lies in the way the vocals are robotic, high-pitched, and inhumane.
