Really should have done a blind taste test, the whole point of have controls in drug tests are that the people don't know they are the controls

I've been using the zero water "5 gallon" replacement jug with my water cooler/heater since 2012. I absolutely love it, but will caution that the new filters they sell, that replaced the originals, clean water as well, but last half as long.

A more accurate, non-subjective test would have been to measure the percentage of alcohol with a hydrometer after filtering thru the Brita and ZeroWater pitchers.

We love Brita and Zerowater! Thanks for the insight USAFBeaton, we will definitely keep that in mind for our next experiments.

I would definitely try a blind test next time. I think your results will be better.

Two Words, Blind Test ( Duh ) Worthless

Does anyone know what the lemony/metallic taste ZeroWater filters give off when the tester starts reading at about .004 ppm and higher? It's interesting that when you let the water sit in a cup or a water bottle, for example, the lemony taste will sink to the bottom. It will be mostly tasteless at the top and below that it will be very metallic. Maybe it's the metallic substance in the filter itself. I'm not sure. But have spent a long time googling to figure it out. I would love some assistance. Got any?

Weird - mine reads 220ppm or higher but after ZeroWater filtration it reads 0ppm - every time. Are you sure you're not using a glass that previously had tap water in it before taking your ZeroWater measurement?

Weird. My tap water reads about 275ppm and after the ZeroWater filter it always reads 0ppm. I'm wondering if you're getting in some cross-contamination (from washing perhaps and not thoroughly drying first?) or aren't sealing it up properly?

You guys have great jobs... You should chug a bottle of vodka that has been run through the ZeroWater filter and see if the alcohol really is gone or if it's just the taste that's masked.

ZeroWater filter is so good at filtering I put red wine on it and clear water came out , with the brita it came out rose color (like a water down red wine).

After doing some reading ZeroWater does claim to remove alcohol from vodka. At a conference held in 2008 in NY they offered to make attendees a Zerotini--Absolut vodka filtered through a ZeroWater pitcher, which would actually remove the alcohol. The filter is more than just a common charcoal filter. It's got 5 stages of filtration. Carbon is the first stage, a carbon and oxidation reduction alloy, a distribution layer, ion exchange array and finally a non-woven membrane. I'd say test again.

I appreciate your comparison of the two filter pitchers. I do however have to correct you on your use of the term "top chef". The correct reference you are looking for is "top shelf".

I've tested my water many times in the past year and a half with pretty much the same results, directly from my kitchen tap and from the filter. Since the ZERO filter dose not purify the water I'm going to make my own filter from 2 5gal buckets and a pair of Berkey filters.

ZeroWater filters are designed to take out all Total Dissolved Solids. If there is fluoride in your tap water, the ZeroWater Filter will remove it upon proper use.

I thought you were supposed to not tell them what they're trying...

I've been using a ZERO water filter pitcher for over a year, my tap water reads 124-PPM and after it goes through the filter it reads 3-PPM.

any idea of how much if any flouride filters out of tap water with this filter?i mean my goverment tells me that flouride is good for me and that it prevents cavities,but somehow i got lots of thos anyways!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd love to see what the alcohol meter or hydrometer says after doing this test.

You might as well throw the results out the window because absolute vodka that they're using is pretty much one of the smoothest vodka's out there

can you filter flavored vodkas without losing the fruity or flavor taste or is this only with regular vodkas?

I'd really like to know more about the ZeroWater one. Did it really filter out the alcohol, or all the impurities? You should have poured a little on the table and lit it on fire.

Music is too loud and I can't make out what you are saying, do you really need music for that? Please, please, i know it's free, but if you wanna do something for other people to learn from it, make sure they are learning from it, first they need to hear you then understand....

Great information next time please lower the background music by at least 70% it was very hard to make out the sound of your voice against the late 60's music...

We were actually wondering the same thing. We did a freezer test of the results and the ZeroWater cup froze COMPLETELY! We think it would take a lot to feel anything.

I just tried this today with my Zero Water filter, and I was surprised how it tasted like pure water with a very slight alcohol flavor!

You need to do the test again and pour it into the Brita filter correctly. You are not supposed to pour it directly over the filter. Instead pour it away from the actual filter the way you did for the Zero. Otherwise, you are driving it through the filter instead of letting it filter through at the proper speed.

They should have made it a blind taste test, and not told the tasters which brand was in each cup.

What this test really proved, was that by the third shot of vodka, you can't taste it anymore!

What a great scientific test, very thorough and expertly done. Well done for using professional taste tester and none bias testing methods. You really know your stuff. Very concise and factual. With brilliant presentation and full of information. I think one of the big vodka companies should hire you guys for your talent and experience. Thanks for posting, you have really made me think.

The zero filter was removing the impurities in the alcohol. Which is what puts the sting in low quality vodka. He was still absolutely drinking alcohol, he just couldn't taste it. I promise you if you gave him 5 more glasses of that stuff his thirst would have been "quenched". He would also have been shit-faced.

This test has inherent flaws. 1) there is no clearing of the tasters palates between tastings. 2) the time between tastings is insufficient to allow the tasters senses to reset to baseline. 3) If the prior 2 considerations were addressed this next issue may not apply or be significant. My opinion, it still would. The 3rd issue is this- tasting the control 1st is a big problem! I argue the reverse order of tasting is appropriate. From the weaker water towards the stronger filtered, to finally the strongest unfiltered control.

top chef? really? just what does top chef vodka taste like? perhaps as good as "top shelf" booze? The term top shelf is as old as bar keeping. it refers to the shelves of spirits behind the bar. The finest & most expensive are kept on the top shelf. the lesser brands (and cheaper) are on the lower ones descending in order of quality and cost. other than that, its a top chef video. keep up the good work. ;-)

Cheap Vodka = ethaanol + water (drink tough but only for beginners) "Chef Vodka" = Cheap Vodka + headache stuff (drink easy but healthy less) :)

get rid of the pure vodka in the tasting. totally fries your taste buds before you try the filtered stuff. as stated by others: double blind and more then 2 cups (but filled with one of the other filtered booze). unless you had about 40% of the fluid not go through the filter the alcohol was not filtered out. very interesting. sounds like a way to take out unwanted impurities in booze. unless

Dude ffs The entire point is the testers have no idea what they are drinking. This way the test is fair and placebo/bias will be removed from your test do it again but don't tell them which is which

If I wanted watered down alcohol I'd visit the neighborhood pub.

Reverse Osmosis Filter > Zero Water Filter > Tap Water > Toilet Water > Brita End of story.

If they think filters remove alcohol then why they did not try at least to fire up? Vodka should burn. Even better would be to use gauge. But anyway i do not believe that any vodka is poorly filtered. At least if water filters improve taste they would be used in process, no doubts. Water filters, especially Zero, remove all dissolved matter from water and work same way against vodka. Filtering must be done not just clean but correctly, selectively against fusel oil. The taste of vodka is in its recipe and even in quality of wheat used. Cheap vodka is made out of potato. Russians never make vodka of potato but they sold most of their brands that got spoiled.

So many things wrong with this from an experimental standpoint. No palette cleansing between drinks, there's going to be a clear placebo effect from the cups being labelled and the tasters being allowed to see what is what, also it's clear as day that putting Zerowater at the end is going to yield the best result as the imbiber gets used to the taste of vodka, Nice try, but I'll stick with Brita for now.
