With more and more Canadian jurisdictions relaxing their attitudes towards Home Distilling for personal consumption only, it is easier than you may think to start making your own product. At Prohibition University, we are dedicated to advancing the cause of Home Distillation for personal consumption. We provide educational workshops for aspiring craft distillers, we work with aspiring craft distillers to develop recipes, work on permitting issues, fine-tune Business Plans and provide contract distilling services.

Hello Malcom. This is very interesting. Can you tell me how much water you put in at the beginning?

For a 5 gallon wash you use 5 gallons and so on

Thanks. ThT is the science of it for sure. Do you have a screen on the valve of your pot. Or a false bottom. I just did my first batch and learned quite a bit. Scorched a little in the bottom of my kettle then clogged my drain valve so rinsing the grain became a chore. You made this look easy

Just a newbie question - if the purpose of adding corn etc to make a mash to break down sugars, then why not just add sugar and skip all the hard work with the corn etc..? I guess it's something to do with flavour? I love my vodka and looking forward to making my own. Its so dam expensive in Australia now about $50-$60 per litre for Smirnoff.. On a pension I just can't afford it now. Thanks for the video.

Gary, you can use your supermarket sugar. The yeast will eat it down and produce co2 and alcohol, however when you make a proper grain mash using barley, wheat, corn. you get a whole different protiens that will give different textures. the Yeast also are alot more happy going thru this mix instead of plain sugar. If you are going to double distill and then filter it will not make too much difference as you are stripping flavour both good and bad. However yeast health will have a direct impact on the undesired alcohols produced (methanol). Then when you distill you concentrate the percentages in the drink (you are taking water out). I looked at it last night, coles has sugar at $1 kg. I would need 2.5 Kg of sugar to get a 20L wash of 1.040 approx... to achieve this with barley I can get 5Kg of 2row for $12-$15 Now the main point i want to make is, buying your Vodka from dan murphy is about $30 for 700ml... after all the kit you need to buy ($450 reflux still and boiler) charcoal filter ($200) miscellaneous ($50) its gonna be cheaper to go to dans and get a drinkable product... or find a friend who does it already and piggy back off his gear. You are gonna want to be using proper yeast like fermentis, not turbo shit. you also want to have a temp controlled fermentation fridge (keep yeast happy) I also have pure oxygen to build up my yeast colony before i stress them out trying to eat thru a strong sugar wash. Check out home distiller .org

Mate, As a fellow Aussie, I will say, don't run turbo washes.I bought a Still spirits T500 kit and that Turbo wash tasted like crap (You know that taste of Metho, people relate to homebrew). I got online and found a lot of forums talking about a Tomato Paste Wash (TPW). I double or triple distil my TP washes and they come out really clean. The bad thing is, I desire the True way of doing things and that's why I'm here... $12 for 4-6kg sugar, 250-500g tomato paste and a lemon for its juice. this will easily give 2.5L of alcohol. I take my heads and foreshots out on both runs just to cut the hearts and it literally has no taste. I believe the TPW recipe is cheating, and that is why I'm now looking into Grain Mashes, also the fact I love distilling and would love to open a craft distillery here in Aus one day. Tax man wants a lot of the profit though it seems :/ Good luck with the adventure, and don't be afraid to use google, find some forums and talk to other people in the hobby. You can learn alot from others online :)

Yeah TPW from what ive heard is great. From there you can start doing partial mash... Just remember look after your yeast and they will do their best!
