Oh! As a part time VA for mostly VO Dubbing on other content online, I can totally relate to the same issues that you're going through. XD Especially the worst habits would be sometimes when mouth clicks gets caught in the recordings of the mic. That's one of my biggest struggles, aside from the unnecessary loud noises that interrupts your recordings.😫
@@brianhullsvoice for p pops hold a pencil (or your finger) to your lips. It prevents you from making too big of a p without changing too much. (I was lucky to mark pages in a session John DiMaggio directed & that was the trick he told the actor to do)
@@brianhullsvoice You definitely! Any word to pronounce with the letter "P" or "B" sometimes the clicks just pops into the recording. Even when you notice about it or not. Then you have the decision to either retake the line or just remove the click out of the audio.
As an amateur voice actor, I feel you Brian. I face similar situations you face. But I always find a way to chill and come back to it later to make clean recordings with silent backgrounds for my productions. Because I can understand how exhausting that stuff is. Think positive, Brian. You got this! :)
In ninth grade, near the end of the school year (Spring of 2000), my class chose from a variety of options, which students would most likely go on to do. Each option had a male and female. I actually won the category, "Most likely to be the voice of a cartoon". That hasn't happened yet, and I'm already 38.
Ugh, I feel you're pain Brian. I feel the same way when I draw, I always forget that one little detail and usually my sister comes in, scares me to death, and I ruin my work 🫠
Yeah, I know the feeling! Sometimes, I do voice impressions (even tho they’re not that great) and record them on the Voice Memos app on my phone and I try to do lots of takes to get it right!
@@n19ntendods I don't do voice acting, even though I'm good at doing some character impressions, but sometimes when I make videos, it takes a couple of tries to get them to be perfect.
I'm not a voice actress, but as a girl who likes to do fan covers of her favorite songs, I understand the frustration of trying to record and be interrupted by the many urban noises of your environment.
Poor Brian, unfortunately everyone, no matter what they do in life, has one of those days. I'm proud of you for pushing through it until you got it done 👍
Haha! I'm a beginner VA and so far I've only worked from home, so I can relate to these struggles so much, ESPECIALLY the unwanted background noises and forgetting to send. I swear, it is every time! 😅 Great job as always, Brian!
SO RELATABLEEEEE haha!! Tho mostly just voice things for myself for fun, its always just a special ritual when recording in my home, especially w/ people around in my house ALWAYS haha!! 😅
Ohmigosh Brian that was EXACTLY what I needed with the day I've been having. Emotional burnout leading me to getting sick to my stomach was brutal, but this video put a smile on my face! Also I need to get some filters for my room so I can record peacefully 😂
💯 lol 😂 this is totally true whenever I be recording it's either a trash truck or school buss passing by then I have to rerecord lines, plus I live in an apartment so the mowers do happen lol 😂
Totally relatable as I dealt with cars, fans, and planes in the background. And having to edit my audio so it sounds more clearer than the raw recording because even with acoustic panels and being in a closet, I could hear my computer’s motor running or something.
haha yup. Too many things can happen. My most unfavorite part is when I record lines and then need to come back a different day to re-record some lines. Always sounds different. Every time. Anybody know a way around this? An audio engineer I know says I can EQ it out but yikes. It's hard to ensure the mic is in the right place all the time and any other acoustics slightly change the sound. Love your content Brian. Great video.
I knew there was going to be a “I forgot to hit record!” in there 🤣 Just don’t forget to hit ‘Save’, anyone who works with a computer has that problem 🥴 CTRL+S is your friend
As a voice actor for fun, this is what I have to go through. Luckily I don’t live in a neighborhood that mows lawns but pet noises and leaf blowers are annoying
Missed opportunity: Stand back ye- MOM! ARE YOU SERIOUS WITH THE VACUUM RIGHT NOW?! DO YOU REALLY HAVE TO DO THAT HERE?! I’M IN THE MIDDLE OF A RECORDING SESSION! GOD!! Mother: You’re 32 living in my house. There is no God.
Do a Oswald the lucky rabbit impression here’s a list of the things I want you to say when voicing him 1: you Think we’re just gonna sit here are you hurt our friends?! You got another thing coming! 2: not on our watch! 3: this is for Marcy!! 4: Give him back!!!
I do believe most of that is possible. I have a hunch though that the two that happens the most is the lawnmower and the not pressing record happens to you the most
I gotta question for ya; since you’re a professional VA now, how many takes of a line do you have to do so we hear them exactly the way they are in the final film?
There's no exact answer, it all depends on the director. In my experience baseline is 3-4 times, but sometimes I've done as much as 30 or 40. Sometimes the director is looking for something super specific, or they are trying a bunch of options because they aren't sure. Or we record once, I come back in and we redo what we've already done, so it's up in the air. But it's almost never a one take only
Some of this is is relatable of being gamer for RU-vid! You think every is perfect beforehand, and then things go completely southward. It is so much of a pain to try and match up game with my commentary after I've realized I didn't have OBS displaying the game. It takes so long to re-record the game and then match it up with my blind commentary. PAIN is a completely accurate verb to use!
I feel your pain. When I have to record music for kids there is always something happening or I make multiple mistakes and have to start over and over and over......lol
i`m not sure if this would be a better suggestion to have quiet days to work, but i would assume that living out in the country especially in the woods is more quiet for anything. but that is probably my opinion. because there isn't a lot of people out there to interference unless you live next to a farm fields. but also i can imagine that the internet connection would be a challenge to deal with. edit: oooh i hate when my laptop freezes during my progress on my artwork as a artist😫😖 its so frustrating to try saving the work
As someone who dubs over Pocahontas for fun I totally get that feeling, it’s usually in my case the family or the cats though, and it can be quite infuriating. I also forget to hit record a lot, it is hell.
"I don't have the space in my house." I wonder if you can make a sound curtain out of a moving blanket and one of those big, light foam mattress covers. Blanket on your side, foam on outside. Maybe use a mesh cover on the foam to sew it in place against the blanket? If you wanna get fancy you can probably install a hook track on the ceiling to hold it all up. Then if you have a tile floor just stand on cushioned mat like those cheap ones you can use for VR safety. Might not stop the noise but it'll definitely muffle it. Then once you're done you can tuck it away in its spot when it's not in use and it won't get in the way of anything else until you need it again.
I felt this so much... it hurt in my bones!! Every single one of these! One of the worst problems for me, which, thankfully, has only happened two or three times, is when everything is properly connected, I go through a full session, and my DAW shows that it was recording, but the software refused to pick up the audio!! Every time I have to do a full system reboot!! Oh! And the sssibilants. The endless sibilants!!
