@@caseysmith544 Yeah, Pat Stevens did a really good job. Personally, I think that she, Mindy and Nicole were the best Velmas. Though B.J. Ward and Kate MIcucci did a reasonable job... Marla on the other hand, forget it! Her Velma sounds like she's reading out the script, the same way a person reads the newspaper . P.S. Call it a wish, but I would lvoe for one day Linda to take the on the role of voicing Velma (I mean, Matthew was Shaggy in the first live-action movies, and is currently the official voice of Shaggy. So, why not give Linda the job? She's no stranger to voice acting... after all, she already voiced Marxy "Hot Dog Water" Fleach in Mystery Incorporated, which to be fair, the character is basically an alternate version of Velma).
@@possibly9937 yeah same with everyone but Fred welker, but only for Scooby, and not Fred, it pisses me off that they didn't even tell the rest of the cast that their voices were being replaced with most of the cast finding out by the trailers. They treated the voice cast so poorly, so I won't be surprised if in the next TV show incarnation of the gang that we will have new VA's for Daphne, Shaggy, and Velma
I would argue that Velma does have a distinctive voice. It’s almost always higher and slightly squeaky. Linda Cardellini was definitely making her voice more squeaky for the role. Not as distinctive as shaggy, but still distinctive. One thing I noticed about Nicole Jaffes original Velma that no one attempted to imitate is that she speaks with a lisp and her S’s are very distinct. That could’ve become almost as iconic as “jinkies” if other actors had tried to continue the lisp
Cardellini adds that nasally lisp perfectly sounds just like jaffe ,bj ward and pat stevens are very similar, ward has a higher register ,frumpkin is the worst imho very lazy. I never liked cohn as i was old by then.
Having loved this show from day one (admitting my age...) I never noticed her lisp. I will have to go back and watch the first few shows, again. Miner 49er, anyone?
I don't mind, really. They don't have to capture the aesthetic of the original voice actors. The voice actresses aren't even trying to imitate Caffe's craftsmanship in voicing Velma.
@@trentonfowler4169 I hate all the character's new voices in "Scoob!" I think they ruined them in it. They all act different in it and the voices don't sound right for them or fit them at all.
@@calebkuti7897 same, what's new scooby doo wasn't the first show I saw though, I just thought her voice was better there. And recently I got to watch all of Mystery Incorporated, Mindy did a great job
BJ Ward and Mindy Cohn are my personal favorites, especially the former in Zombie Island. Kate Miccuci is indeed funny, but sometimes her voice is too distinct for me to completely see her as Velma. Marla Frumkin's voice is VERY unbefitting of the character, she sounds like she should've been voicing Daphne instead.
I like Mindy Cohn a lot, and she's my favorite. She created a very distinct voice for Velma. I feel it matches her design the best. Kate Micucci is pretty good too, my second favorite.
I have to say, Fred and Velma's voices exact opposites of one another in terms of voice actors: While Fred has been voiced by Frank Welker for most of his existence, Velma has had the most voice actors out of all the Mystery Inc. Gang.
No offence to Marla Frumkin, but she’s the worst actress for this character. Not because it sounds nothing like Velma, but because most of her acting sounds forced and unconvincing.
The original, Nicole Jaffe, is my favorite but, Mindy Cohn comes in second. She has a very similar tone to her voice. They both have that slightly high (almost nasal) and very young sound. Sidenote: Judging by her picture, Nicole Jaffe was definitely the real life Velma. 😉
Yeah but Mindy Cohn was and is my favorite with Nicole Jaffe being second, though I prefer Cohn. Marla Frumkin, Kate Micucci and Gina Rodriguez are the worst in my opinion. Oh yeah and that’s true, Nicole Jaffe even said so in an interview that she looks like Velma
Nicole Jaffe, B.J. Ward, and Mindy Cohn will always be my favorite Velma voices. It was pretty cool of Nicole to return to play her in the parts of the direct to DVD movies. Linda Cardellini made for a very sensual Velma.
The reason I like Mindy Cohn as Velma is because her voice makes Velma sound smart and stern. The reason I like Kate Micucci as Velma is because her voice makes Velma sound nerdy
@Spiral Chain I agree Mindy Cohan’s the best too, alongside Nicole Jaffe(I like Mindy Cohn more) now Kate Micucci is bad in my opinion because it’s too light and it’s really annoying to listen too.
being born in 1999 i first heard and got into the Nicole Jaffe Velma, but i was heavily into Mindy's take on Velma in What's New Scooby Doo until Kate took over in Be Cool Scooby Doo and to be honest i think Kate is my favorite of the bunch except whenever i hear Kate's Velma all i hear is Doctor Fox from Unikitty
Yep and her voice in that(Mindy Cohn) is the best of all time. Mindy Cohn is the best voice alongside Nicole Jaffe though I like Mindy Cohn a bit more. Kate Micucci, Marla Frumkin, and Gina Rodriguez are the worst.
Xavier Spriggs I know right, though she was actually replaced. Also to make matters worse: 1. Her successor(Kate Micucci) is terrible in my opinion. 2. She was replaced for unknown reasons.
I think Cyber Chase did you dirty. The clip you used of Velma in the space level isn't B.J. Ward, but the one Grey DeLisle-Griffin has voiced Velma, due to a production error. The best explanations I can come up with is that some point, it was likely a Daphnie line before it was given to Velma, the line was just never re-recorded and the mistake was never caught, or the Japanese animation crew just accidentally mistook the two voices and it was never fixed.
As an early 2000s baby, I was raised on the direct to video movies. The VAs for those are my favourite. BJ Ward’s voice seemed a little off in the specials, but it grew into something nice. Also, the mid to late seventies VAs sound WAY too old
Future Velma voice actors should get the feel right for her signature intonation and nasalised speech. Kate Micucci got it right, perfect. The one in the movie Scoob, unfortunately didn't.
All previous voice artists sound basically the same. Suddenly Gina Rodriguez and she sounds completely different. Can't believe they recast everyone for this movie.
Anyone remember how the 1990 Jetsons movie forcefully recast Judy Jetson's original voice actress with an at the time pop star and even the original cast of the series was upset about it? I get the point of them trying to go all Hollywood with the cast to set it apart from the biannual Scooby DTV movies, but something about it I'm of two minds about.
That's the thing that confuses me. He's already the Hollywooded Up voice recasting. I guess they could have gone with the entire Scooby-Doo live action cast for the main characters. Sounds like they wanted to go a different (read: Younger) direction, even though Bill Hader's Shaggy sounds older for some reason. Again, confusing. I guess it was all to get more movie tickets sold, while they constantly make DTV Scooby films. A decision made before the circumstances that lead them to dumping the thing on VOD anyway.
@@mightyfilm I mean even Katte Muccini is a TV Star from a few TV shows over the years when she was a larger role minor character that in one TV show would have become a main cast role had the TV show not been cut. So she could have done the role.
Most of the actress ( with the exception of one animated and 2 live actions ) have a raspyness and nasally tone to there voice... you could argue that type of voice is what help define most Velma's impressions Though the new the adaptation the more natural of a voice the character gets, which im not a fan of... i like the more exaggerated voice
I've literally watched almost every single Scooby-Doo tv movie and tv show because I loved it as a kid and it was one of the only things my dad would watch with me. So most of the voices up until maybe like 2015 are very nostalgic for me. But Mindy Cohn is probably the most nostalgic.
When you cross from Nicole Jaffe to Pat Stevens, they seem so similar, but the two carry a totally different vibe, and to me, Velma was never the same again (except for the two 2003 movies). The other voices drifted further from the original, lacking the charm, though Mindy Cohn was an attempt to come back in the right direction. The only other person who seemed to cover the original Jaffe feel, was Kellie Martin, who ironically did Daphne in the Pup Named Scooby series. But then that Daphne was actually more like Velma, like in always being the one to say "there's no such things as ghosts!"
Nicole Jaffe was my first Velma voice but Mindy and Kate are my favorite voice actors. I like Haley's live-action portrayal but Linda's live-action performance is my favorite. I also liked her voicing Hotdog water in the SDMI series. Although no one is necessarily doing an impersonation of each other, several do have similar intonations and a little something that makes it "Velma" to me. For example, Kate Micucci blends right into where Mindy leaves off, just giving Velma detectable differences yes, but very similar intonations.
You know, considering that you added Fred's singing voice on his own voice evolution, I'm surprised you didn't add Velma's two singing voices on Legend of the Vampire and Music of the Vampire in here.
1:51 ''It is likely that the Velma you grew up with will be the most recognisible or beloved to you'' 6:42 Mindy Cohn and 8:45 Kate Micucci are my personal faves. I also really like the early Actors such as Nicole Jaffe, they give Velma her distinct, nerdy voice
Oh man, I love Velma including the voice actresses that voiced her. It's hard to say which is my favorite voice of Velma but If I have my favorite voices of her they would be the following: 1. Nicole Jaffe 2. B.J. Ward 3. Kate Micucci 4. Mindy Cohn I also enjoyed Linda Cardellini's portrayal of Velma from the Live-Action Scooby-Doo movies, along with Hayley Kiyoko.
B.J. Ward and Mindy Cohn for me for voices. The direct to video Scooby movies will always be the best part of my childhood, while Mindy Cohn is also in the same book, she’s also my teenage years. Plus she brought the most amazing performance of Sassy Velma in Mystery Inc. Linda for live action is still the best actress to portray her, also love her voice for Velma.
Jaffe and Cohen were my Velmas, back then Saturday mornings were filled with Scooby-Doo, Where Are You to hype up Sunday with Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated. So I got to hear them both. Also Hayley Kiyoko is my fave in the Live-Action ones
Thank you so much! Velma is one of my favourite characters ever, and after seeing your video with Freddie Jones, I was hoping you would do one for Velma. And you have! Thank you! This has made my day :) Keep safe and look after yourself.
Nicole Jaffe, B.J. Ward, and Mindy Cohn are the holy trinity of Velma for me. Nicole’s is so innocent, cute, and 70s. B.J. has such a 90s tomboy, geeky voice it’s adorable. And Mindy has the modern, sarcastic Velma
Mindy Cohn was the voice actor I grew up hearing play Velma I was born January 12, 2000 and I remember watching What's New Scooby Doo on DVD from the library around 2005 or 2006 and hearing Frank Welker as Fred. I still love the intro song of What's New Scooby Doo it's just so good :)
Well, I grew up with the first two voice actors, but I did notice a slight change in Nicole Jaffe's voice from SDWAY? and TNSDM, getting a bit higher pitched. And, yes, my most fave would have been Jaffe, if she stayed consistent. It turns out, I think Velma's voice worked better with the deeper pitch and nasal sound, along with the slight accent (New York, maybe). Pat Stevens would have been the one in my formative years, and her voice fits most of that description. But to be fully honest, I think the Mindy Cohn, Kate Micucci, Linda Cardellini all had the best, similar, and consistent (in my mind) Velma voice. And I do have to say, even when the others didn't match voices, the only two that didn't fit were B.J. Ward, who sounded like she was doing a mocking version in parodies, Sarah Gilman, who while was doing a good job acting, was just doing the "I'm in a young adult/kids film... my career is starting and I'll get to act someday". I don't count Gina Rodriguez, mainly because that sounds like the casting director didn't even try for a type. They just wanted a VO actress and she was next up on the list.
Cohn’s performance is the one I’m most used to and I think she also tends to give the most emotional performances whenever applicable, which gives her a slight edge over the others. That being said, Jaffe, Stevens, Ward, and Rodriguez all fit the intellectual role pretty well too. Rodriguez deserves credit for actually taking the role and managing to convey the right kind of performance despite her voice being different than most interpretations (unlike Zac Efron as Fred, where he’s basically just being Zac Efron and not much else). Kate Micucci’s a great comic actress, but her voice tends to work better with more eccentric characters like Webby Vanderquack from DuckTales. She definitely gives a lot of energy to the character, but it just seems a bit too extreme for such an already established personality. Lange, D’Abruzzo and Frumkin are the weakest here. All voices are pretty generic, although D’Abruzzo and Lange at least sound like they’re trying to give good performances, plus they’re also meant to be playing younger incarnations of the character. Frumkin doesn’t seem to show any signs of an attempt at a good performance. 1. Mindy Cohn 2. Nicole Jaffe 3. B.J. Ward 4. Gina Rodriguez 5. Pat Stevens 6. Kate Micucci 7. Christina Lange 8. Stephanie D’Abruzzo 9. Marla Frumkin
Scrappy doo series, Velma voice change is noticeable, which is what brought me here. Nichole is my favorite as she is the original childhood favorite! Pat is also awesome and was perfect as she picked up the Velma reign in my childhood memories. Marla in Scrappy def has a different accent, reminds me of Fargo accent! As an adult, scooby do is a comfort food that I'll watch an episode here and there when I am tired and stressed. lol!
Pat Stevens's voice is exactly what I think of when I think of Velma’s voice. I remember Nicole Jaffe a little bit but I don't really recognize the later voice actresses at all. Maybe one or two from some of the movies but I never watched the later Scooby Doo cartoons.
The very original actress was the best one. Well, her and the one from Pup. My first weird crush(es?) at seven years old were mostly thanks to those two!
Haven't finished the video yet, but I think Mindy Cohn is my favorite Velma. Also, Velma was one of the first characters to make me realize that I liked girls when I was young, so I love this video.
im so happy that polish dubbing has their original voices everywhere since the 80s or 90s, they did a really good job, if i were to watch the series in english i would be surely confused
Kate Micucci actually kinda looks like Velma in her real life pic just missing her clothes and glasses she could play Velma in a live action scooby Doo movie!! 😮
Nicole's is definitely my favourite. One reason would be that I like how all of the voices sound in terms of audio/microphone quality, it has an aesthetic appeal that I like. Another reason would be that despite being in my early 20's, Scooby-Doo, where are you! is what I grew up with. Definitely very nostalgic hearing her again in this.
Mindy Cohn, mostly because she’s been Velma for most of my adult life and is the first Velma voice I can recognize. I also like the kid who played young Velma in A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, because that Velma is so cute and my personal favorite interpretation. 3rd place would be Linda Cardellini.
Surprisingly, despite being raised in the prime time for Cohn to be the voice I associate as the voice of Velma, I watched lots of OG Scooby as a child, and the 2 direct to vhs/dvd ones she did in 2003 were the most replayed in my house, which makes me think of Jaffe's voice for her.
Nicole got more expressive. Pat sounded very mature. Marla sounds like she didn't rehearse..... B.J. I love her, very girlish. Mindy was a Godsend. Kate is always good to hear. Garfunkel and Oates! Christina got things ready for B.J and Kate. Stephanie filled Christina's and B.J's roles. Linda is queen, I said it. What else Hayley done? Sarah too? Gina did good.
Nicole Jaff makes her sound so cute!!! I actually used to watch the Vampire in Australia movie as a kid and I think I lowkey realized that they had their old voices. BJ as Velma and Mary Kay as Daphne will hold a spot in my heart since the Alien and Cat Zombie movies were my favs as a kid.
all the good velma voices always make her sound intelligent, geeky, and just a bit nasally!! i think a lot of the major good ones all have that in common. some of them go a bit overboard though and don’t sound genuine.
When I hear Stephanie D'abruzzo, I only hear Kate Monster from Avenue Q as she was in the original cast. Mindy and the original actress are the 2 most recognizable to me. The 2 in between then I didn't like as much. Velma is my favorite character and was my first cartoon crush as a younger boy. What can I say...short, curvy, and nerdy is my type.
Dave Lee Down Under In my opinion I think the best voice actors who voiced Velma Dinkley (while age 12 - 18) are Nicole Jaffe, Pat Stevens and Miny Cohn. While I think the actor that played and voiced Velma Dinkley the best in the live-action is Linda Cardellini
