Some of the very common symptoms associated with Chiari malformation are swallowing issues and, sometimes, difficulty breathing or speaking. Otolaryngologist, Dr. Lucinda Halstead, gives a great description of how the throat works, why it doesn't work quite right in patients with Chiari, and how a multidisciplinary approach after surgery can help patients feel better.
This lecture was given at the May 10, 2018 Charleston CSF Chapter meeting held at the Medical University of South Carolina.

I was recently diagnosed with chiari 1, from an MRI done with contrast laying down. I spent most of my life in the performing arts singing onstage, and doing backstage work professionally later when I was more grown up. I am just realy glad this was here to see, it totally makes sense to me. Even as I write this my work now during these times is in a call center- and I can really tell when my voice is not working right. It is, always has been a really soft spoken issue for me. thanks for acknowledging our shared pains.

I was diagnosed with Chiari 1 last spring. Two weeks ago, my 5 year old son was diagnosed with Chiari 1 with a 17 mm herniation along with pressure on the spinal chord and blocked cfs flow. We are awaiting his appt with neurosurgery at u of m. My husband and I have noticed that he been clearing his throat every few seconds for days now. Do you think that this could be associated? He gets head aches everyday. I am worried.

What about surgery of the lower skull to fix the Chiari ? I guess that would be the very last resort ?

Yes! Unless there are symptoms that are interfering significantly with someone's day-to-day life or a rapidly progressing syringomyelia appears, doctors will try to delay Chiari decompression for as long as possible. It is no small thing to have surgery, so it is looked at after "traditional" medical treatments have failed to provide relief to symptoms.
