Penny marshall said the church was on fire for this scene. And they had to shoot this scene quite a few times. Because whitney, the church, as well as the choir couldn't stop shouting.

That's simply your opinion , which you're entitled to , however you can't make a preference or an opinion a fact. What is a fact is , she's a phenomenal Singer and one of the greats , but to say she's thee voice , isn't factual.

Very Anointed was she. Regardless of what decline or troubles she faced whitney sure could sing all the way till the end. What she lost in power and height she gained in interpretation and soul. Her ability to emote was off the charts and incredibly sincere. Another vocalist on this level was her cousin Dionne who in her youth could give any young soprano a run for they money. Singing was her family’s birthright

I ALWAYS love and enjoy your voice analysis. I’ve often wondered the mechanics of various singers of how they use their instruments. In re to Whitney Houston, she’s my favorite because there’s a spiritual component that comes through all of her songs. I’ve heard various artists sing her songs technically better but they don’t have that ‘it’ factor that she has. She was such a gift to us. I have a technical question. What is it physiologically that makes the black voice richer than other ethnic groups. There’s just something different, for me I use the description ‘richer’. It’s found on speaking and singer. Thanks for what you do, it’s so enlightening and enjoyable.

To answer your physiological question, length and thickness of the vocal folds factor into the frequency or pitch with which we speak (that often demarcates who we perceive as having a masculine or feminine voice). Also your resonatory (oropharynx, nasopharynx, glottal) system very much shapes the color and essence of your voice. Every single one of us has a different shape to our resonators. So while we all may start with the same breath support from our lungs, as soon as those vocal cords vibrate and that hair passes through the glottis and hits those resonators, your voice becomes uniquely yours. Some people are masterful at manipulating those resonators (hello impersonators). When you consider cultural aspects and why someone sounds a certain way or you’d guess someone’s race or ethnicity based on their voice, you also have to consider prosody which are intonations, inflections, etc of how we use our voices. So what sounds, syllables, and phonological patterns we may be engaging in due to our cultural backgrounds. All that to say: it’s different for each person because each person is different haha.

Man! You just don’t get this twice 🤯. Whitney herself was truly a gem, but her voice was a blessing. I love how she approached “live” @2:24 the way she was manipulating her vowel sound was just an interesting choice to me. I wonder what her intention for doing that was. My theory is to kind of ride the build of the accompaniment.

I rewatched this a week or two ago, and I was really surprised to hear her singing in head voice on anything besides an "oo" or "ee"! By a year or two after this, the head voice was almost exclusively used to pop up on one of those vowels. Regardless, my faaaaavorite singer of all time was clearly so at home with her favorite genre here. Love this performance - another great analysis, J!

I love when singers give us simple vocals without the runs & riffs. Karen Clarke Sheard best album was her "2nd Chance" album & we were able to appreciate her actual voice without her signature scats & growls. Most mediocre singers today start with runs as soon as they attempt the 1st note....booo!! Whitney was the best at this & thank you for this video!! YOU are great btw!!
