Thanks to the commenters who brought the following needed corrections to my attention! 1. It is NOT Big Heat but IS Big Hit (Though I think Bit Heat would make for a fantastically funny entertainment company name) 2. "Rap Monster" was associated with RM previously but is now outdated and he has now restyled it asking that it be thought of as standing for "Real Me". For those that hate the Fun Facts and if there are other errors - I do apologize. The fun facts only show up when the not chopped up video gets blocked or claimed. My videos should be protected by fair use as educational commentary. Unfortunately, the software that scans for copyright infringement does not take that into account and rather than go through the whole appeal process I opt for putting something in to break up the performance as a less complicated solution that some viewers seem to enjoy. For the fun facts I am usually just copy and pasting them directly from another site that I don't have enough background or time to vet before posting and frankly since the Fun Facts are just a way to give you something to think about while I break up the film I don't ever intend on spending copious amounts of time researching them. So, in short, if they bother you scan forward a few seconds or better yet.... watch the original film and then scan to my comments after the film is over to hear what I have to say about it. If there are errors in the fun facts in the future I will, as I am here, correct them in a pinned comment at the top as they are brought to my attention. My goal in these videos is not to delve into the trivia and background of the performers. Though it is interesting and valuable it is beyond the scope of what I am trying to do here. So if you are looking for an expert on the specific performers then I'm not that person. My expertise and my goal is 1. To appreciate the great artists out there and hopefully help you appreciate them in new ways as well from the perspective of a voice teacher, stage director, and performance coach that has taught students ranging from grade school to professional all over the world for over a decade. 2. To use the top performers as a way to teach the tools and techniques that top artists use to get themselves to where they are to the next generation of performers (whether they want to be professional pop stars or shower singers) so they can learn from what good things are being done and explore ways that they might even improve the art form of vocal performance. I am using them as an example because they are the top performers. So whether you like them or not - whether I like them or not - I see that is irrelevant. What is relevant is that A LOT of people do like them so might as well see what they are doing that makes people gravitate towards them and learn from it. So if you feel the need to fill in what you see as a gap or error in the information please do so in the comments here. But please realize - My doctorate, other formal training, and experience is in voice, opera stage directing, and mostly as a teacher of up and coming performers and not in english or pop music history. Thank you for watching and a HUGE THANK YOU to the majority of the commenters out there that are so supportive and especially to those that have taken the time to post really fantastic insights, thoughts, and comments that give us a new way to look at these amazing artists. Long comment - Thank you for reading. I do read as many of the comments as I can and take them seriously.

I'd like to apologize on behalf of all ARMY'S that were discourteous to you. Some are easily offended because of the history of disrespect and current worldwide disrespect BTS and ARMY has had to endure. That being said that is no excuse to abuse you when your purpose was to praise the unity that is BTS. As long as individual effort is recognised and valued I see nothing wrong with calling them a "well oiled machine." All groups that do what they do have to mesh like that to be good performers and BTS is no exception. I loved your factoids about BTS but one correction if I may. RM used to be known as Rap Monster. He doesn't want to be associated with that name any longer. People still do associate the two and thats inevitable but it is to be avoided if at all possible. Thank you for treating BTS and its members with respect. 💜💜💜

I think the reason why individuality is so important to fans is because of how outsiders see kpop. Kpop is seen as a machine were everything is manufactured and to be honest, it's true to an extend. However it has been changing for the past 7 or 8 years with groups like BTS, or many others who have been given artistic freedom from the start and stand for things bigger (peer pressure, mental health, expectations of society, generationnal conflicts) than the materialistics subjects of the past. For exemple, the person that is responsible for kpop on musical stand point (a blend of pop, rock, hip-hop, jazz, etc...) Seo Taeji the leader of "Seo taeji and boys" stood for individualism, the end of a collectivist mindset and constantly confronted the governement. This man who is an absolut legend in Korea recognized BTS as the group that carry his lagacy ,since they tacle the same topics in their work. I completly understand the "robot or machine" part, I don't find it offensive, but some can take it as the stigma attached to the Kpop industry. Thank you for reading and pardon my English.

I'm an army, and i know that bts never lipsync in their performances. but most of comeback stages from korean music tv show are recorded many times to get perfect shot. I'd rather watch bts's performances from their own concert. if there's one thing that bts failed is lipsync at their own song, especially RM(you can even watch it on their music videos 😅)
@blackroomred
@blackroomred 5 лет назад
this is true. most korean shows like this have pre-recorded stages not vocally but visual wise. that means they shoot the stage more than once and then go with the best shots. this sometimes ends in vocals coming off as if lipsynced when they put the final product together. but in general this particular show Marc was watching is always heavy with the MR backing track for ALL acts on their show. but yes BTS in general never opts for lipsync. it's one of the big things that set them apart from other kpop group, majority does it.

@Wishphoenix1
@Wishphoenix1 5 лет назад
They don’t lip-synch for the most part. Have they done it? Probably However, most of the time they are live. They prefer it if they can sing live - they think they owe it to their fans. Lol and yes Poor NamJoon really stinks at lip syncing. That was one of the first things i noticed when watching early BTS MV 🤣🤣🤣
@carolmin3412
@carolmin3412 5 лет назад
@@gummynoodles9036 They do not lip sync to their own songs. A more recent example will be from SNL. If you observe Jin's part of MIC DROP in SNL, he simply did not even bother to put the mic near his mouth to act singing when his lines were being played. He started singing when needed to. And yes they lip synced to performance mainly covering other singers songs at those Korean year end music festival shows. Especially to newer groups those music shows always make Rookies perform other singers songs. For BTS they did it in 2014 n 2015 mostly.
@gummynoodles9036
@gummynoodles9036 5 лет назад
@@carolmin3412 yes agree . But when Jimin does that thing in serendipity where he flips on his back and does body rolls on the floor, he is lipsyncing. And when they were on some Korean music shows to but you can blame the show for that, they don't trust the artists to be perfect enough. If you watch the tour DVDs you can spot when they aren't singing live. And also I do not blame Jimin, he has a beautiful voice, and literally no one can sing while doing those moves on the ground. But it does still count as lipsyncing.

Some corrections: 1. RM doesn't stand for Rap Monster. Rap Monster was Namjoon's old stage name which he outgrew. RM called out his past self in an interview to change his name because he is a human not a monster. RM might stand for "Real Me". 2. It's "Big Hit Ent." & not Big Heat. 🙂

Hello, about your question: With BTS hapens that many people stereotype them as part of a "machine factory from Korea", in a racist and actually dumb way. Usually the term "machine" is used in a demeaning way, to call them "robots" and to refer that they don't think or do things for themselfs, and not as a compliment. Thus why ARMY can be a little defensive when that word is used in regards of BTS. But your input about your meaning for that word in this video, is amazing and I as a member of ARMY take it as a compliment. Thank you very much for this reaction, and I'll love to see more reactions from you to BTS.

@@user-wz7kq2iy5e Hello, It's said in a racist way because it's not only said in relaton to the industry. In the past people have referred to asian people as machines/lacking emotions and similar things, as if it's a "race" thing, just for being asian. Adding to that the korean k-pop context nowadays, but my grandfather (Japanese) happened to experience those types of coments, based on his asian etnicity. Hence why I used the word "racist". I can't say for all armys out there but personally, I take it as a compliment when someone describes Bangtan as a "well-oiled machine". Depending on the context of the sentence, of course. What I think he meant is that they have such a great teamwork, and that they knew each other so well that they can communicate and anticipate each other's movements in stride, basically what a well oiled machine is, working so well together. Anyways, I also underste some ARMYS taking it as a negative thing, and I hope you know Dr. Marc, that most of us are very over protective and that comes from somewhere as well (you don't want to know half of the sh*t the boys and the fandom went thru) but I know that some are just hateful trolls and I'm thankful that you don't let them get to you. I love your reactions on BTS and KPOP in general. As an American, you always hear about Western performers and how they are good singers/rappers. It's really awesome to see a professional like yourself, reacting to KPOP which can be similar, but artistically totally different from Western entertainment. A lot of KPOP in general is influenced by Western music, but has evolved it into something totally new and refreshing in my opinion. I get so tired of POP here in the states, I love what KPOP brings to music. I'm happy that you are giving your thoughts and opinions about BTS. I greatly appreciate you taking your time to check them out. Enjoy your day! PS when they say FAKE in the chorus it's mostly their accent. Love your analysis as always.... and those clever BTS factoids used as performance breaks were great! Re their pronunciation of 'fake'... according to korean reviewers-- that is the way Koreans pronounce it...because fake requires 2 hangul letters (or sound bites) the 'fa' sound + the "ke' sound. I appreciate your confession about being new to Kpop and I do remember the 'machine' comment, but I understood totally what you meant. Perhaps your remark was taken out of context or heard by a non-native English speaker and so, was misconstrued. We, all ARMYs, have heard other Americans be dismissive of kpop. I remember one TV anchor/spokesperson say something along the lines of "Oh, kpop. Yeh, I've heard of it. That's where they do those super choreographed dances..." As if choreography was a negative thing! So, maybe some people are a little touchy about that. Please don't take it to heart. I see other commenters recommending their last Melon Music Awards performance... and you should listen to them. As someone in the theater/opera world, you will really appreciate it. These end of year awards shows in Korea are really something anyway, but BTS went over the top. From what I heard Big Hit spent close to $200K on the production. The performance consists of an intro, Fake Love, Airplane Pt 2 and IDOL. And, just so you know, BTS always changes up their performance, so you will never see the same thing twice. Individuality is critical to a kpop fan. When we "stan" a group, we learn the details of each member's life, we watch hours of interviews, pre-debut footage, variety shows they attend, etc. We bond with all of them, or some more than others, and many times a "bias" emerges from this effort...that's when the real fun begins. I have to stop here, because no words can really describe the feeling when, as one famous kpop youtuber stated, "You don't choose your bias, your bias chooses you." Your life, your heart, will never be the same, in a really awesome way.

Yes some people can be sensitive to their idols and they misconstrue what is said. They dont take time to try and understand where the commenter is coming from, or how much knowledge the commenter has on the genre of kpop. As to BTS, I love how yes they can seem like a well oiled machine. They have such great understanding of each other. I think that is why they look flawless in their choreography. What astounds me the most though, is that you can clearly see their individual personalities come through without breaking the great visuals they are creating with their performances. In kpop it is very cliche to give the group members titles to make it easier for the public to differentiate between them. Usually given names like, the leader, visual, vocal, rapper, funny one, so on so forth. In BTS usually people present them with their titles to other people to facilitate introducing them. Once you get to know them though, those titles go away and you can clearly see their individual strengths and personalities come through. 💜

Kpop in general takes stage production to another level. BTS and Bighit are one of the best but most Kpop artists, companies and shows put numerous efforts into their stages. The lights, costumes, props, sets, camera angles, make up, hair, dance, singing, facial expressions, even a short glance at the camera. They pay so much attention to the details. Practice and rehearse so many times to perfect them. That's one thing I love about Kpop and BTS.

I understand this particular peformance and song not being your type but I would love to give you other recommendations depending on your preference of music! :) if not that's okay too! :)
@Lookinforrealmusic
@Lookinforrealmusic 5 лет назад
@@shaneezaw nice of you. I really prefer deep rich voices . I love Blues, Americana, Folk and musicians who write from personal experience.. My favorites are Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Avi Kaplan, Sam Beam ,Tracey Chapman.
@shaneezaw
@shaneezaw 5 лет назад
@@Lookinforrealmusic fun fact: bts are heavily involved in the production and writing of their music as well! But in your case I think you would like one of the members solo songs, Singularity by V or Epiphany by Jin. You might also like Home or Jamais Vu from their new album Map of the Soul: Persona. All of this is available on RU-vid at their ibighit RU-vid channel! I literally had a brain freeze and can't remember so many of their wonderful songs but I'll probably comment some more later! I hope you can give them a chance and you can enjoy!

@@shaneezaw I listened to a few and I appreciate that you really enjoy them. I appreciate that they are extremely talented but it simply doesn't appeal to me. Thank you for your kind suggestions. It was interesting to see.

I think regarding the fak-e sound, I could be wrong, but if Korean is anything like Japanese there aren't a lot of silent sounds. With the exception of the letter N there is usually a vowel so "fake" would sound like fa-ke (actually more like fe-ke) if that makes sense. I'm not sure if I wrote this clear enough or if that's the reason but 🤷‍♀️...

You know, your comments made me think that westerners often have different feelings towards individualism. I think its interesting that BTS's core message is about self acceptance, and all in the backdrop of 'we are a group that is successful because of how each individual fits in to the big picture.' Kpop is intended to be inclusive of music in other countries, and I think curiosity and innovation are highly valued, so any individuality is also highly valued, but within the frame of how it will benefit 'us'. Also, ironically, it leads to a sort of humbleness that in its extremity is a humble brag, which is refreshingly popular here in the US?

The korean language actually has a schwa-like vowel ㅓ so it comes way more naturally for them to use especially when it comes to their accent when pronouncing english words. Its pretty cool.

thank you for reacting to BTS love it . kpop idols start in very young age. the companies train talent kids for 3yrs. some of them are so talented so they finish their training in 1yrs. the company control everything in idol life, so no drugs, women... etc ...which makes all of them hard worker and getting better and better. (some bad companies don't care, so they let the fame destroy the idol)

I think BTS and BigHit have great synergy and is a well oiled machine in the best possible sense. I think many fans are jaded on the term "machine" as in the past it has been used in a negative and derogatory way. how they are like robots with no thought of their own and they are just pretty dolls. BTS and their fans work hard to try and dispel those pre-conceived ideas that kpop is known for. I think they took the training aspect of kpop with the creative control and freedom of an indie artist and combined it. Hard to describe, I'm Korean and have been around korean music and kpop all my life but BTS is that one group that really stands out to me.

BTS are awesome storytellers. they believe in their music's message. it helps a lot that they write, compose and produce their own music that's why they know how to express the feelings of their songs and how to show it in their amazing choreography as well. BTS show the same intensity, energy aand facial expressions even when in their dance practice. they very passionate about what they do that's why they are so pleasant and entertaining to watch. BTS is the best! there's nothing like BTS!
