@@0ptixs Honestly, I think he'd appreciate this video a lot, especially because this is very good, and very practical, advice. At least one of the fixes can be started immediately (the breath control tricks).
I think your way of reacting is the best way. Good criticism to help people grow, instead of looking down on something or someone and saying how horrible you think it is. In a way it's interesting to see the video of James reacting in a personal way, and then your reaction, giving advice and analyzing things from a distance. Thank you for making this a sort of multi-reaction. Like a reaction-ception.
You are one of the few vocal coaches who can critic without bashing on a person. I'm not a fan of james charles, but I don't like when when people just hate on someone just because everyone else is doing it.
@@TriplePalindromous I believe he used his popularity and influence to pressure some young men into doing things they weren't quite comfortable doing. A young man who previously accused him of this recently came out and denied the original allegations, however if you watch his explanation video retracting these statements, something seems very off. I believe he was threatened by James' team to retract his original statements. Even if James didn't use his influence to pressure these young men, it's undeniable that the manner in which he was texting these individuals was quite vile and authoritative.
The way James uses his tongue in speech and singing is indicative of someone who had a speech impediment or speech delay, and then spent time in speech therapy once he started school. He is using some odd tongue positions that look a lot like compensatory positions designed to, for example, pronounce an s-sound without a lisp.
I didn't hear that way of speaking in the eleven-year-old James spoke. Is he gay? I'm asking because for one, I'm blind so I can't see him in his videos, and two, because of how he speaks. That is not a judgment call on my part. It's the way people sound when they make fun of how some gay people talk. I wonder if he didn't try so hard to talk a certain way--though now it may be habit, regardless of where it came from--if he wouldn't find his inclination to the tongue positioning shifted, even in his singing.
Brendonmakesmesmile lol but I mean Tristan says nothing constructive usually. Or he just gives nothing but compliments like to Brendan urie. Which I mean ok there isn’t much to correct with Brendan but you know... he never has much advice besides singing the part again to the camera lol
Even when there’s nothing to correct, Sam is pretty great about explaining what is going on so that his viewers can LEARN. It’s been months since I bothered with Tristan’s reactions, but I’m pretty sure he did less or none of that
buggy627 ya, i thought when he did the video essentially mocking JC for not “following” his advice (which was good advice but this was like 10 months on) that really turned me off of him. Regardless of my feelings on that tour, it seemed so two faced to me that T would profit off of being in JC’s channel and then mock him when he knew that it would make him more popular. Also he comes off as cocky a lot of the time. And yes Brendon is a good singer but he’s not perfect and Sam can watch him and point out places where he might be straining, but not in a mean and mocking way. (Wow I spent way too much time writing this, i need some hobbies)
Brendonmakesmesmile lmao it’s ok so did I! And I totally know what you mean... it felt mean to me at the time about James too esp because James had been to him for lessons? If I found an old teacher of mine making fun of my singing online after I’d be so upset!
I am so grateful that the RU-vid community has someone like you, Sam. Your videos are highly informative, and you are setting a new precedent - that criticism can be given with care, and that kindness is transformative. I have no doubt that you've helped many people rekindle their passion for singing - I am one of them. You truly inspire me.
"take a straw, preferably a reusable one". Thanks Sam for thinking about the environment 😂 also, could you please do a reaction to Marina (Marina and the Diamonds)? Would love to see your reaction to her!
I appreciate you giving respectful constructive feedback, but also giving credit where it is deserved! Singing is a lot of fun and most of us are not professional. But, you always give us tips and tricks that will help us grow. Thanks for the video!!!
Hi Sam. I cannot tell you how glad I am to have found your videos a few short months ago. On the one hand, I was fascinated, but on the other frustrated because I've always suspected I could do more with my voice (after a lifetime of being told I really can't). Anyway it really lit the blue touch paper in my brain, and finally gave me the shove to ask around and find a voice teacher. Best thing (apart from having my son) I ever did! I'm hitting notes I never thought possible, in an easy, pain-free way that's SO MUCH FUN. I'm not a performer but I have to sing. In the same way that sharks have to keep moving: I stop, I die (only figuratively, of course!). Singing this well, and this easily has worked wonders for my mental health, my confidence, everything. And it all started with your awesome channel. Cheers mate.
Man I really love how you analyze everyone's singing styles. You back everything up with the why, how, and even how to better use what you have or if anything better could have been done. You never shame anyone thought, at least not that I've seen and I think anyone would be lucky to have you as a coach. Keep it up, you have a great teaching style!
Based on what you said about vowel changes I think florence welch would be an interesting singer to do a vocal reaction to because of how she modifies vowels a lot in her singing and overall she has an interesting voice I think!
Fun fact about Florence! She has dyspraxia, which can affect the way ur mouth moves when u speak. Many people with dyspraxia, like myself, went to speech therapy when younger as there is some struggles to produce certain sounds with coordinating the movement of the tongue and lips in the way you see others do. It's like a disconnect of you see the way other people do it and the actual process of mimicking and recreating what u see in your movements.
It's incredibly interesting how much speech patterns can affect singing patterns, especially in regards to human behavior. I've noticed that as a someone with a more quiet or submissive personality, I have the same vocal problems as everyone else, but inverted. I pull down head voice, am not loud enough, and I don't quite enunciate my consonants unless I am focused on doing it (It just becomes a vague vowel sound). It is exhaustingly rewarding to change those habits and actually hear an improvement.
Oh absolutely. Someone's inability to get loud is almost always related to personality traits. Generally loud people pull chest more often than quiet people. Sometimes tricking the body into making big sounds can be very releasing emotionally if it's not a sound you've made before.
@@SamJohnsonVoice Very much so! More often than not, I was unaware that I could even make certain sounds. Even my speech is very animated and full of tone compared to before. Thanks for the help ;)
@@SamJohnsonVoice I've struggled with this! What does it mean if you're loud with some people, and quiet with others? No seriously ... I've never had it put into words, but it makes complete sense. Fascinating. Thank you so much for your insight. Perhaps somewhat related... When I was at a bowling alley a few years ago, I felt like no one could hear me. I had to yell to be heard, and even then it wasn't enough. The guys could just bellow! Since then, I've said, teasingly though perhaps with some truth in the statement, that women weren't created to bellow. That's extremely oversimplified and oversimplified, because of course the resonances of men and women are different...
@@AmyAndThePup I honestly think it's just habit. We fall into certain patterns of speaking when growing up, and certain personalities can activate different ways of speaking. Think of the difference in your words and behavior when talking to friends or family vs a stranger. People live life at different volumes.
@@AmyAndThePup In a crowded area like that, I'd find it difficult to be loud like that- tbh, I think it would be easier to pitch your voice higher, so that it cuts through the rest of the background noise and is easily distinguished from others' voices. :)
You are always so kind and constructive, Sam. So many of us can relate to having a good ear but not knowing how to translate those sounds via our own voices, and, rather than mocking that, you normalize it. And that's inspiring.
What you say at 13:10 is why I love you! I absolutely love YOUR passion Sam! Your knowledge and skill are obvious and combined with the wisdom and maturity of mind that you exhibit in your approach to these videos is inspiring to me as a human being. I'm not even a singer but I totally want to be more like you! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜💖 Great video, Sam!
Please, please, please make a video about speaking properly! I am pretty sure that I am retracting my tongue when I speak, making me sound nasal (also I strain my voice alot), and I have not been able to find any advice, that I can figure out to use, on how to adjust it. I can't figure out not doing it. And you are always so specific and great at explaining using Your voice, so I would really love your recommendations!
You can test hypernasality by putting a mirror under your nose while you speak (does it get really foggy when you aren't saying "m", "n" and "ngg"?is it more foggy out of one nare? ) and plugging your nose to test the difference in sound. This can also be assessed by a speech pathologist so they can see if you have anything structurally going on, if you have tongue thrust, or if you need to possibly be fitted for a prosthesis.
Yes, that would be so helpful! My problem is that my voice cracks way to much. It's so embarrassing. 😅 It's one of the reasons to why I don't participate in class discussions. 😦
@@kzzephyr hi. Yes, I've tried slowing down because that's someone once suggested as well. I have not tried the whispering, though. :) I will try that next. Thanks for the suggestions. 😊
Thank you for being such a positive haven in an internet full of nastiness and negativity. You have such a beautiful way of commenting on things that isn't hurtful. That shows you are a kind, good hearted person and the world needs more of that. Your videos have given me the courage to start singing again after so many years of thinking I shouldn't bother. I feel like I can get better, and when I finally get up the nerve, I want to book some lessons with you. Keep being such a beautiful soul.
Oh heck yeah a new video! I personally can’t stand James Charles but I’ll still watch for my man Sam lol. ALSO! Please please react to Tonight by Jin from BTS
Unlike some other vocal coaches on youtube, you actually explain the technical side of what you're listening to and how you would help to resolve any issues. This is the content I signed up for :D
I love how kind and thoughtful you always are! I do a lot of tutoring and teaching work (not in music, mostly math and science) and half the job is usually emotionally supporting students and helping them break out of the fixed mindset that they are "bad at math" or "can't do math" and instead realize that it's always possible to improve and understand things better. It should have been obvious to me that the same applies to singing, but watching your videos was the first time that really clicked for me. You are always so consistently patient and understanding, and every time I watch one of your videos I feel inspired to be a kinder and more patient teacher to my students (as well as to myself when thinking about my own singing). Just wanted to say thank you for being such a great example! Oh also if you haven't already, I think it would be really cool if you analyzed some of Amanda Palmer's singing!
I love listening to Sam’s analyses because he is never ever ever mean and always tries to explain why a sound is happening and how to adjust. It’s amazingly supportive!
Sam can you react to leona lewis singing run live on the xfactor since no vocal coach ever reacts to her. It's one of the best vocal performances ever trust me you won't be disappointed
When he said, “his tongue and other parts of his oral cavity are trying to resist the air because they are so used to having so much going through,” that sent me lolol
This is so helpful. I love these videos where you dissect performances where people aren't professionals (the it's always sunny video will forever be my vid you did. I keep returning to it for encouragement.) ❤️
I’ve honestly learned so much just from watching your reaction videos. I love how you break down what’s going on with the voice. It’s allowed me to listen to myself and improve my technique. It’s like the science of voice!
🙌🙌🙌 We need more people like Sam on this earth! Every time I watch a new video I want to be his best friend because he's always so encouraging and positive ❤
I always love your videos, a pleasure watching them. What I love about you is how you really analyse the voice and break it down to us and what we can improve on rather than heavy critique and not having much information for that person to work on. There’s a couple of other voice coaches/teachers I’m following who tend to occasionally throw in some “shade” from their personal obvious dislike and hardly much analysis, which is a shame tbh. As a person who’s been singing my entire life, personally love learning new tips and tricks, balances so I can sing better - your videos have helped me a lot as I’m more aware of the things that aren’t working as well and what is: so thank you 💛 Also I must say you do have a beautiful smile 🙈 Hugs from London 🇬🇧🧐☕️🤗🤗 xx
I Looooove your instruction style. You explain the mechanics so well that I feel like I could learn how to sing well simply by watching through your channel.
I played clarinet for 8 years, and I think that was incredibly helpful, both for building lung capacity and for air control. Even now that I'm in my 40s, I still have a sense of how much air I have and how much I'm using. Add that to how much I'm learning from you and I'm a happy camper!
First of all...love the content! I'd really love to see you react to a Prince video! Maybe the Super Bowl Halftime Show or any other one. I'm a big fan of him and he has a very unique voice. Greetings from Brazil!!!
Sam! I LOVED your comment about supporting/educating singers because the basis behind everything is the want and fun behind it. Thank you for showing us that voice teachers and professionals still have the heart and love behind the constructive advice!
FINALLY SOMEONE ACKNOWLEDGES JAMES CHARLES' OVERUSE OF TONGUE!!! EVEN WHILE TALKING!!!!! IT IS NOT NORMAL TO USE THAT MUCH TONGUE AND IT ALSO MAKES PEOPLE UNCOMFORTABLE.
You seem like such a kind person and so positive in a world that loves to celebrate the negatives. Anytime I’m feeling down I know I can come watch some of your videos and it helps me remember there are sweet and kind people out there and just puts me in a better mental state. Thank you ♥️
I love how encouraging you are no matter what. We all know that it didn't sound the greatest, but all you have is constructive criticism that isn't hateful or mean. You are so sweet and that's what I admire about you.
Watching your videos are so helpful. You’re so honest and knowledgeable. I take notes from certain parts for when I go do vocal practice myself 😩 Thank you for doing you 🙌🏼 one of my fav channels
I can’t believe I am about to defend JC but here we go: He actually made a whole video about matching foundation to his skin and is well aware of this issue. Also a mismatched foundation is kinda minor compared to supporting someone who is into children!!
@@rory7676 could you leave me alone about that? I was just trying to say I haven't seen him in forever and forgot about the issue and you bring my music preferences into this!!
You seem to be an amazing person. Such good vibes. Your ability to see mistakes but also see the person making the mistake in a loving way and giving your opinion that way is so so amazing. I admit that in the very beginning I had some assumptions about you and you've proven them wrong and I am actually learning a lot from you as a person. So, thank you Sam.
Really surprised with your choice of video to react to, and as usual, always informational and interesting. I know you usually review more PoP, Rock and recent artists (apart from Queen and a few others), but it would be so nice to see you react to Soul and Jazz singers such as Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Donny Hathaway, Bill Withers, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Al Green, Etta James, Dinah Washington, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Ottis Redding, etc. I know they're more "oldies", for a different public, but these singers still had special tones, special technics (Billie Holiday and her very unique way of singing), and it could make people and a younger audience discover these important artists that influenced A LOT of contemporary singers. Also, once again, it would be awesome to see you react to Lara Fabian's version of "Je suis malade". Yes, it's in French, but you can find a well translated video on YT, from one of her performance of the song dating back from 2003. She's a very good singer, and is being looked upon by Dimash, who sung one of her song "Adagio", as he loves her so much. Cheers from a baguette!
I love how you give examples of what to do to not sound a certain way. You give really good tips on exercises and would love to see more vocal exercise examples from you
So much respect for you Sam. Love the content and the education you provide. I appreciate that you didn’t put ads on the video but...put the ads on this video you deserve it. James did a good with that video too.
You're the best analyzer of singing on RU-vid. You are incredibly knowledgeable of the science and mechanics that go into singing. As someone who has no musical training it's very educational to hear how you break down and analyze the singer's performance. I also enjoy how you always manage to find some redeeming quality in every singer when you could just as easily be highly critical and dismissive. Thank you for keeping it positive and sharing your vast singing knowledge with us...
You made such an interesting comment about learning to speak properly. I have found that if I am teaching I tend to lose my voice by end of day and I cannot be heard in a bar. Also your comments are so encouraging that it makes me feel like seeking out a vocal coach is a good idea.
He breathes at such a weird spot - in the old video I thought it was because he didn't know where to breathe and expected him to have fixed it by now, but he breathes right before "kicks" and it's just such an odd place to take a breath.
Yeah, it sounds a little bit weird, but in original version the singer breathes at the same spot - I think this is why James Charles does it as well :)
This is one of the most fascinating videos on singing technique. Thank you, thank you! I've never had money for singing coaching/lessons, so these videos are wonderful. I find myself listening to singers and what they're doing. Now I need to just keep practicing. When I was twelve-fourteen, I was extremely critical of how I sounded in recordings I made of me singing. I loved singers who aren't from the U.S., and their annunciation of words was clearer. I started following their vowel sounds, or trying to. Then I had a smattering of voice lessons from my high school choir director. I'm not sure what happened over the next two years, but I went from not projecting at all and thinking I sounded horrible to liking what I heard, and singing out more freely. i've tried to pick up little tidbits along the way, though I still hope for lessons someday, if money and anxiety issues will allow.
Sam I love your videos. It has definitely helped me with mine even tho I haven’t really sung anything (just in the car lol) since freshman year of HS. Thank you for teaching and not making fun of people. ❤️❤️❤️
I love watching your videos! I feel like I learn something helpful for my own singing in every video. And your genuine kindness is always appreciated 🙂
YES! Love that last part about "...keep focusing on the Love that you have for the music". Thank you for this. So many good vocal lessons in there, plus, get to hear that song again, for like the 800th time today. Can't get enough!
Sam, you're right about, when people put others down when they sing without knowing the right techniques. I know for me, I love singing, and my goal is to become a singer, but my parents always put me down, and made fun of me when I was younger. So now when I sing, I tense up, I get too much in my head, and it makes me hesitant to send out the sound and allow the full sound be produced instead of holding back. I guess in my brain I've been conditioned that I can't sing well. That being said, is funny because people tell me I sing good but I feel I cant believe them. But this year, I've been trying to put myself out there and do small clips of me singing and allowing people say what they have to say. I even done some distortion/scream. Anyway, sorry for all that but I'm loving your videos ^^ I feel I'm learning a lot and I feel you make it more easier to understand where the placement of the sound is and how it suppose to feel in the body. So thank you so much!
Hi sam! I love watching you're videos. You're very non biased and fair in your analysis which is so refreshing. If you're so inclined you should check out Donna Missal's live vocals. I'd love to hear what you think about her raspy growly vocals in a lot of her songs!!
If you've ever heard JC sing live, you know that his "Pumped Up Kicks" is auto-tuned, processed and digitally altered SO much. Just, please...no more. Please.
Hi Sam , I love how positive you are. You give constructive feedback instead of mean criticism. We need more youtubers like you . You are a gem ! I was wondering if you have any advice for me , I have a top denture and I'm having a hard time being able to sing like I used to. I can no longer feel the roof of my mouth with my tongue and I think it is hindering me. Keep up the good work .We love you !
Great analysis, Sam! Can you react to The Struts? The lead singer (I think) is pretty good and I’d love to hear some analysis behind his voice from the great Sam Johnson.
Congrats, Sam. I really enjoy this, i love how you make them very helpful and with a constructive critique without being mean. I really really love your work, i won't stop say in it. Keep it up. 💕
