If you read the English translation of the lyrics, the squeaks are a well placed stylistic choice blending with the lyrics. The lyrics are about someone wanting to give up on a relationship. The squeaks are like a cry of anguish for someone in deep despair.

Gusto ko nang bumitaw translates to I just want to let go (or give up in the context of the song). Her little squeaks here mirror the song's emotional signature echoing the lyrics' angst, desperation, anger, helplessness, frustration and almost like a controlled scream of pain. Just my understanding of the song's message of wanting to give up on a relationship that has given so much pain and not wanting to but needing to.

Hey C&M! I love that you're reacting to Morissette once again! I also study singing, so I genuinely love dissecting the various "schools" of singing as a way to gain more practical knowledge. You said that you are both "mixers" and have yet to explore the "core" of your voice. That was such an insightful comment from Meliá, and here's why: Morissette is coming from a different "school" of singing. She built her vocal resonance on years and years of chest voice ("core") development. She is a "mixer" too, but her chest voice ("core") is always very engaged throughout the entirety of her vocal range. I don't say this as a slight, but for educational purposes only: The majority of singers today have skipped the work of developing the chest voice. Today, the training is anchored heavily on "mixing" the voice and neglecting proper chest voice development. You brought up the consistency, the openness and vibrance of Morissette's vocal resonance. It's because her chest voice is very developed. Regarding the "vocal squeaks": This is a type of vocal distortion. If done incorrectly, you can really damage your vocal cords. But from my evaluation, Morissette has the proper technique to do it safely, just like a trained gymnast can safely do a complex tumbling routine. From years of watching her sing, I can say that she has the foundation to execute these types of vocal distortions, while minimising risk. First, her vocal tract sits very open, the tongue sits down and relaxed. Superior "open throat" technique. Then, she combines that with superior vocal compression. By compressing the air, the airflow is very controlled as it passes thru the vocal cords, minimizing the risk of damage. The beauty of Morissette's technique is that she can sound very resonant, with a lot of core to her voice, but she's achieving this power with very little airflow passing thru the vocal cords. It's very controlled. Regarding Adele, from my honest evaluation of her technique, the reason why she's had 2 surgeries to her throat is because her use of vocal compression is flawed, plus, she's choking her vocal tract with improper open throat technique. Lastly, yes, Morissette's style of singing is similar to an extreme sport. It's not for beginners. There is risk, but from my evaluation, she has the correct foundation to mitigate those risks. As for my preference? I love the vocal distortions (i.e. vocal squeaks and growls)! Thank you again for your honest and insightful reactions! More of Morissette please 🥰👏🫡🤝👊🙏 P.S. Morissette had to rest her voice in 2018 due to over-use. She had way too many gigs. Her style of singing (i.e. heavy belting) does need a lot more maintenance.
@yoojin3877
@yoojin3877 2 года назад
Great comment as always 😊👏🏻 One thing to piggyback on what you said: I have a slightly different viewpoint of her chest and mixed voice and would actually argue that her incredible ability to mix is what actually what serves her vocal style so well. As a further illustration of this, Adele suffered vocal damage several years ago because she used to have a lot of trouble with her mix and would pull her chest voice up well past the healthy point. Carrie Underwood is another singer who is not known for a strong mix and has had similar issues with pulling chest voice too high and subsequent vocal strain. So I don't think Chase's comparison of Morissette's use of vocal breaks with Adele's vocal health problems is apples-to-apples, but I do get his overall point of the importance of prioritizing vocal health in general.
@JoeyAndamo
@JoeyAndamo 2 года назад
@@yoojin3877 Thanks, yoojin! Excellent insight as always!! I would argue that the issue is *not* the "pulling of the chest voice up too high". Instead, the issue is the inability to disengage the *valsalva maneuver.* This is a very natural tendency of the body to close the glottis, particularly when we are coughing, lifting a heavy box, laughing, sneezing, or when we're going to the bathroom (if you know what I mean). Vocalists need extensive training to disengage from this natural tendency. (Note: Morissette used to have this issue, but she's gotten so much better at disengaging it, resulting in more freedom in the upper belts without sacrificing the "core" of her voice). Note: Modern vocal coaches often misdiagnose the problem. They will often blame it on "too much chest voice engagement", when the actual problem is the lack of training in disengaging the *laryngeal valsalva tendency.* It has been a mission of mine to dispel this modern myth about "too much chest voice" 🫡😃. On the contrary, the chest voice is the foundation of singing. Proper chest voice development is what gives a singer the ability to expand their vocal range, their dynamic range, the colour palette of textures and tones they can produce with their voice... The chest voice is the key! A compressed sound, while using proper open throat technique - this is the key! *A great example of someone who uses all these techniques correctly: Morissette.*
@JoeyAndamo
@JoeyAndamo 2 года назад
@@yoojin3877 Speaking of Adele, here is my favourite vocal coach, Ken Tamplin, speaking on the correct use of vocal compression and vocal distortion (e.g. vocal breaks, growls, vocal fry, guttural vocals). He briefly touches on Adele in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X0YHDKZ7hU0.html Morissette, in my opinion, is a very advanced-level vocalist. Her vocal compression skills are so advanced, on the level of an Ann Wilson, Steve Perry, John Farnham, and Ronnie Dio - just to name a few. These are just a few examples of Rock singers who used heavy distortion during their decades-long singing career, and did so with proper technique. (Note: Morissette, if you recall, grew up on Rock Ballads).
@yoojin3877
@yoojin3877 2 года назад
@@JoeyAndamo Always good to hear from you, Joey! 😊😊 The typical end result of not mixing properly is still "trapping" the singer in their dominant register, which can be caused by a number of things, including what you mentioned. And it is an issue that singers like Adele and Carrie have had with pulling. I'm not disagreeing with you about the importance of a well-developed chest voice! I'm familiar with Ken Tamplin, and I do like some of what he says, other things not so much (such as his advice on tongue positioning, and sometimes I don't think his viewpoint on compression is nuanced enough). His methodology tends to favor those who want to sing in a distinct style (power/metal), and imho not all of his advice is well-suited to a singer like Morissette. But I also know people who took his courses and enjoyed them, and there are pros and cons to every teacher so I'm not singling him out specifically. At this point in Morissette's career, I'd actually love to see her work with a classically trained teacher, or someone who can give her additional tools to optimize the vocal health of her extraordinary instrument. At any rate, it's awesome getting to discuss this stuff with someone who is so passionate about singing 💖 So even though we may not always agree on every single thing, I hope you know that I truly respect you and love that you are getting other people thinking and talking about things they may not otherwise 🤘🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@JoeyAndamo
@JoeyAndamo 2 года назад
@@yoojin3877 Love these discussions!!! We actually agree, but our emphasis may differ at any given time. I only brought up Ken Tamplin for his valuable insight on how to safely use vocal distortion, since he has decades of practical experience with it. He's definitely not the go-to for Pop or Musical Theatre, but when it comes to adding different types of distortion to the voice and doing it safely, he's probably the one I would go to. I was imagining how Ken's input would have *balanced out* Chase and Melia's worries on Morissette's use of distortion. I find that we benefit more when we combine these insights from different "schools". For example, when it comes to "belting" techniques, I would probably still go to a Ken Tamplin, or any vocal coach that prioritizes "open throat" technique for resonance. I do not prefer the Jo Estill method because she teaches *"twang"* for resonance. Singers that rely on twang end up with a shrill-sounding, whiny-sounding voice quality, in my opinion. My honest take on "mixing" is this: Our voice already thins out *naturally* when we ascend to higher pitches. As you noted, Morissette is already adept at lightening ("mixing") her voice, as evidenced by the tonal change into brighter-sounding tones when she ascends to the upper range (aided by the slight raising of her larynx and using more nasal resonance). The issue for her is the laryngeal valsalva tendency, a typical issue for singers and a very simple issue to fix. "Mixing" is actually a very new terminology. This terminology never existed until the early 2000s. Modern schools have placed *too much emphasis* on this subject as a solution to reaching high notes. Instead, what they should be emphasizing on is the training on how to maintain an *open throat* (i.e. open throat technique), to maximize the resonating space of their vocal tract and mouth. Then, *while maintaining an open throat,* the singer must train their voice to sing scales *in every vowel placement,* in order to achieve *muscle memory* on keeping the throat open on every vowel placement. Then, once you get that muscle memory down, then you can learn to use *vocal compression* (i.e. holding back the air, creating air pressure) to help you release into those high notes with resonance and power, without blowing too much air into your vocal cords. And because the vocal tract is *trained* to be *consistently open* on every *compressed* pitch (i.e. controlled airflow), the result is a rich, vibrant sound, even in the higher belting range, without causing strain on the vocal cords. 👆This training takes years to master. Not every voice coach has the dedication to teach this, and not every aspiring singer wants to go thru it, especially in our modern culture of "instant gratification". Regarding Adele and Carrie Underwood, the problem is that they weren't trained to *consistently* sing with an open vocal tract. *This is a common theme for most modern singers today, because today's most popular singing methods are teaching singers to constrict their vocal tract (using twang, curbing, etc.) as a foundational technique for achieving power and resonance in the upper range.* That's the culprit, in my honest opinion.

The squeak might be a health concern, that's a valid point. That said, I just want to remind you guys the context of where and why she does it. She's not necessarily doing it just for a cool effect. It's part of storytelling and the emotional aspect of her singing. It's sort of a whiny effect and in this case it conveys hurt and frustration. And if you look up the song's lyrics, it makes sense. I'm sure you guys had that in mind but I feel like it's often not considered enough.

That is my problem with "vocal coaches" who are quite biased and react based on their own training, own background & own knowledge only. They do not even try to understand Morrissette in the back of Philippine music industry and I am sure they will be able to understand her style if they know the background of Filipino singers as a whole. They critic the song without understanding the lyrics first because Morrissette just do not squeek or growl for the sake of it only. It is a means of communicating the emotion & expression of the words & lyrics behind it.

The song itself is already very emotionally challenging. It talks about agony, anger, despair and just pure heartbreak. This song was actually used as an original soundtrack for a Filipino drama series in which the main theme is infidelity in a marriage and its grave effects to the children and family involved. I think Mori's approach (the wailing, growl and squeals) is only apt because if she did it in a completely different way it wouldn't have the same impact to her Filipino audience. I definitely respect your opinions from the technical standpoint, but hats off also to Mori because we Filipinos know how hard this song is and what it takes to convey a kind of pain she's never personally experienced.

As a fan of Morissette, there are times that her voice is not in good condition due to overuse since she's in demand and performing on different occasions. Your point about squeaks is not taken as a negative comment but rather something that would help Mori to take care of her voice since she's also aiming for her voice longevity. I'm sure Mori would understand if she watches this reaction. Don't worry. Mori is not using squeaks all the time. It's just that this specific song Gusto ko nang Bumitaw demands a lot of emotions and that's the way she sang this when this song was recorded. The squeak emotes a cry of pain... If you understood the lyrics it will make sense artistically. "Gusto ko na bumitaw" means "I want to let go". Notice the squeak comes after singing "bumitaw" or let go. So your dimension of analysis is only looking at technical aspect devoid of the emotional artistry.

Hi Chase and Melia, I laughed when I saw this video pop up in my feed -- not because of you guys, but because you just happened to pick the one song she's done in recent memory that features a lot of vocal breaks 😂 I have to admit I personally prefer fewer of them, but she definitely rocked this song. I don't remember what was being discussed the last time you reacted to her, but 2020-present has been a period of tremendous growth for her as a vocalist. Her old record and network contracts ended after 2019, giving her the freedom to explore different styles of music. It has also enabled her to prioritize vocal health (adequate rest) and work on further development of certain aspects of her singing -- "pure" head voice, bringing her sound farther forward, etc. She has made the deliberate decision not to use whistle register as often as she used to, both to help preserve her voice and because it's not what she wants to be known for as a vocalist. As an international fan, it's been really interesting seeing her balance what she wants to do against what the fans in her own country expect of her (lots of belting, lots of whistle register, lots of vocal breaks). This song here is definitely a nod to the latter. Last year, she released a new EP with some of my favorite songs she's ever done. My biggest wish is for you guys to please react to a performance of what I and many others consider the standout track, Will You Stay: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KulUX8G5skQ.html Another standout performance is Love You Still, which she wrote about her separation and estrangement from her father: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kpoKV1kzQUY.html Sorry this is so long, but I hope you will read it and take what I've shared to heart! Honestly not also a fan of squeaks. But here, understanding the story of the song, the emotions - breaking free, weakness, frustration, vindication. I think the intention (if not) behind the squeaks is to express weakness, like a little stumble from running away from that sad corner, holding back a little. But then a belt, a growl. Hello is the opera singing Puertorican that wrote the 10 page comment las time 🤣 Sorry if my comment was a little aggressive last time, I was just a little taken back that 2 classically trained singers and coaches like me were so opposed to a different technique and stylistic choice. I know why you worry about the vocal break or squeak cause it is unnatural. Like I said before, I learned how to whistle since I started my classically training. My professor taught me that even if it's a disconnected register because the way the folds vibrate is unnatural but It will only hurt you if you clench and squeeze your folds supper hard so that the folds can closely meet and create that whistle sound. I had to experiment like she did and found the way to trained my folds to move close together without squeezing them and clenching them is all about the open throat and visualization. I imagined that the mechanics was similar like when you swallow saliva or food, the throat, larynx and uvila don't squeeze or clench on a forced or unnatural way, but when you swallow pills then you force that squeeze etc. That's how I trained my folds to just get to that position without forcing it. The squeak is the same mechanism as the whistle but singers like Jesse Jay, Sia, Demi Lovato do them by pushing the air super aggressively threw the folds and that's how some singers do the whistle in General, morissette doesn't push. Some of the singers you mentioned like Adele.... she is amazing cause of her voice and tone but she has no training and has many vocal inconsistencies like support and placement. Mariah carey has had nodes since she was a little girl and that's why she can hit the whistle and when the nodes are super swollen her belting range is more inconsistent. Yes mory could hurt her voice like she's done before but she is a Phoenix she learns more and more and her technique gets better and better. She is not perfect and she does over do it at times but she learned how to belt the right way with a balanced placement, her support is on a different scale, her lows are getting even better, her dynamics are amazing, she knows how to release at the top without pushing, she learned how to whistle Like me without pushing or squeezing so have a little more faith in her knowledge and technique. I understand we're your coming from cause I'm a coach and classically trained as well but I think her voice is safe. Sorry for the 10 page comment again 😅. Thanks for the love you show mory.

I get that y'all don't like her squeaks, but of all the songs she has ever sung, THIS is THE song in which the squeaks and growls are actually needed based on what the song is all about. Without them, I'm not sure one can do it justice. It's a very difficult song meant to be belted. I mean, we can put the English translations here, but it's not the same. Hence, the growls and squeaks.

Great reaction to Morissete Amon live band performance "Gusto ko nang bumitaw" I really love and like to appreciate this song is full of emotion. What a great performance between the original and the cover. Morissete Amon, she does it as a cover but she gave justice to it. And this is a really good example of a cover because she doesn't copy the original and she makes her own way and style to make it different from the original and she gave her best on it.Gusto ko nang bumitaw means (I want too let it go) watching you guys and support you here from the Philippines

Filipino singers are quite careful with their voices, they do not drink cold water, mostly hot water, don’t speak on the date of the engagement. Ginger tea always. Also, her style she just emulates the passion of the lyrics. If you understood the words of the song, it describes the anguish, the conflict and the pain being in a toxic relationship. She just wants to give up. The song does not call for a whistle.

Its understandable that you guys didnt like the squeaks. I know You guys are just concerned and just wants her to do healthy singing. But we all know its a stylistics choice coz shes a pop singer. Probably she does that because she thinks its the best syle to capture her fans and make her fans love her. Dont mind the toxic fans who bashes because you criticize her way. Its ur channel. And i feel more for your advocacy that you are concerned for the singers you react to. Watch "Power" , her first take. In her studio. I believe she did a more conservative approach to the way she sang the song. Very little squeaks and growls, plus she did her top notes using a different technique rather than just belt it full voice. You dont even have to react on it as a content. But just for you to have a peek on how she sings in a healthier way. Well thats at least to what I think. More power to you guys.

Morissette - Gusto Ko Nang Bumitaw (English Translation) Lyrics [Verse 1] Crying every night Not a voice can be heard Fighting a losing war Until when, already defeated, already exhausted I thought you were still mine but not anymore Is there really nothing anymore? [Verse 2] Pacing in the darkness Getting lost, getting confused, what am I really to you? Who am I really to you? Here in my slumber There's like a weight in my chest There's nothing else as sad There's nothing else as painful [Chorus] I already want to let go But my heart does not want to yet I already want to let go There may still be hope Myself as enemy, who should be the one to choose? Who is it supposed to be, should it be myself or you? I already want to let go [Verse 3] If my sorrow is your happiness If my shackles mean your freedom If the wound in my heart is the cure for yours What will happen of me, should I give way? Am I to set you free with your heart intact? I'm already losing my hope [Chorus] I already want to let go But my heart does not want to yet I already want to let go There may still be hope Myself as enemy, who should be the one to choose? Who is it supposed to be, should it be myself or you? I already want to let go I already want to let go [Bridge] Weeping but nobody's even listening (Ah) There's never a good place for A faulty love So now, I will choose myself first Before I love again Will we ever love each other Will we ever love each other again, oh [Chorus] I already want to let go But my heart does not want to yet (Oh) I already want to let go There may still be hope Myself as enemy, who should be the one to choose? Who is it supposed to be, should it be myself or you? [Refrain] I already want to let go I already want to let go I already want to let go, let go, to let go I already want to let go [Outro] I will now choose myself Letting go, already letting go

I really appreciate your guys' opinions and comments on the technical aspect of singing. But I kind of hope that you also acknowledge the emotional aspect of it. Cause no matter how technicaly good a singer is, if they're not conveying emotions or not conveying the right emotions, it really won't sound good. I hope you guys know that filipinos' main point in singing is conveying our emotions, which is why there's many tagalog heartbreak songs. Cause it's the best genre to bring out emotions. So sometimes, when singers do specific things that's probably not that impressive technical, it's because they just want to sing using emotions. In your future videos, I'd really appreciate it if you could talk about the technicalities as well as how the singer is conveying emotions according to the song.

Yeah, everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but I'm with you 100%. They had so many complimentary things to say about her. Her resonance even while singing staccato, consonant-dominant passages, her grounding and support, her volume control and variation, etc. They even pointed out things she does well that they need to improve personally. Chase's lack of enthusiasm for the vocal breaks is completely unsurprising given his classical training and the fact that he (and Malia) are very much still rooted in classical singing. But I heard it as him not picking on her specifically, just saying he's not a fan of that technique as a part of the CCM style of music. Plus, as Malia said(and as my own teachers used to say), you learn the "rules of singing" in classical training. Then, especially if you do contemporary training, you learn which "rules" you can break and how to break them. I heard a LOT of respect for Morissette coming from both of them, and I hope they will react to more of her music.
