Thank you so much for giving Geoff's colleagues a fair shake! You're right, he does get a disproportionate share of attention and that's understandable, but sometimes it can feel like the other guys are standing in his shadow, so it's a delight whenever that isn't the case. There were no drums or other instruments used, but some distortion was applied to Layne's beatboxing (as well as the vocals) in post-production.

You need to find out from VoicePlay. There is a very few times when VoicePlay has incorporated Layne's skill with a violin (Warriors (also J None), Nothing Else Matters strictly as the "guitar solo" as that was a necessary part of the song, The Lion Sleeps Tonight a short was short format but long enough to satisfy the guys that were having so much fun with it. That's it for the violin 3 times over a period of 25 yrs. In Hoist The Colours, Cesar had a shackle in his hand that he occasionally shook. That info is in the data that VoicePlay published. If there is anything not in the A capella genre that they used, they tell you that in the info should you wish to read it. They do not have a production managing company that defines what they do. They work their tails off so that the creativity is their own. That goes for the arrangements, director, set designers, costumes, props, lighting, pre-mix audio, camera work, hire people as necessary for prostheses, makeup, etc. Their makeup artist is usually Rick Underwood, Ed Boyer is the final mix for all the big name acapella groups - PTX, Home Free, VoicePlay, probably Voctave. Check out Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice or Peter Barber (both of whom know exactly what VoicePlay does or does not do.). I understand why you thought you needed to penalize them for what they had done, just to keep things honest. That's all I'm doing here.

I'm glad yoy liked this :) It;s good to hear that you focused on all of them, not just Geoff. All drums and sound effects are done by Layne, with a bit of postproduction and effects put on the vocals as a stylistic choice.

You did hear Layne doing the vocal percussion :) They are their own arrangers, directors, set & costume designers, lighting technicians, and with the exception of more involved makeup/prosthetics & camerawork that they bring in others, they are their own production studio. They're 100% independent artists, and they are not afraid to play around with their voices & add distortion or other effects in post to achieve a desired effect. Final audio mix is done by Ed Boyer, same guy who mixes for PTX and Home Free. Regarding any instrumentation, as with every other a cappella group out there, if there's an instrument used, you'll see it plain as day (like in their cover of Warriors & Nothing Else Matters) Edit to add: you can see detailed credits in the description of their videos, they list everyone who was involved from start to finish on each video they produce. Geoff, the bass singer, has his own solo channel, and on his Patreon he's done deep dives on the covers he's been working on, so you get to see the whole creative process (he does about half the arrangements for VoicePlay, with Layne the beatboxer doing the other half, with the bald tenor Eli (rhymes with jelly) starting to take on some of the arrangement duties now as well) and you learn how much attention is paid to finding just the sound to create the right feel for each song they cover.

There were not programmed drums here!! Everything you hear is only the voice, including all of the drums and even the creaking door sound lol Layne is an amazing beatboxer and sounds like a drum track! I’ve heard him do it live! Yes, they do add some post production on their voices sometimes, when called for as an artistic choice. Voiceplay never hides this fact but it all starts as voices. Have you ever heard really good beatboxing?? Just because you think it’s impossible to sound like a track doesn’t mean it is and doesn’t make it fact… But thank you for reacting to my favorite group again!! You can find the original by searching Miracle of Sound - Valhalla Calling. I know you take paid requests but I hope you will review their version of Dream On at some point. Hoist the Colours and Dragonborne Comes from Skyrim are also fantastic 😊

Is not sometimes...Melodyne is on every single song so everything is pitch corrected.

@@thisismetoday7423, @Adrian Bumbarov Additionally, there are songs that people assume could not have been done without pitch correction, which however come out as the same pitch when performed live or as Geoff sometimes refers to it - 'in the air'. They DO use a program to edit the audio. They DO add filters sometimes, too. Generally for compression or sometimes echo effects or distortion. They do NOT generally pitch correct. The only song I can think of off the cuff, where their notes/pitch were altered was on the "21 Pilots MashUp" done with Kurt Hugo Schneider on his RU-vid channel. Considering that HIS thing is sampling sounds and playing them back (often with a twisting of pitch), it is not surprising that parts of that song were notes that were adjusted. But it is an exception. The only other case I believe was possibly a use of pitch correction on the song "Still Alive" from the game 'Portal' to give Eli's voice a more computerized sound, as he was singing the part of a computer. I will say that I do not know for a fact that they did adjust his voice or not. Considering he is a known voice actor, I would not put it past him to be able to get that sound on his own without Melodyne. They might use filters to get certain effects. And there probably are filters in use on this song. But they have no need to correct pitch. These guys are just too good at hitting their notes precisely to need it. Don't know what happened to the other poster. This was more to the person who suggested they were 'pitch-correcting', not to 'thisismetoday'
@thisismetoday7423
@thisismetoday7423 4 месяца назад
@@hwyla4416 They can definitely sing on pitch live as proven by performances here on RU-vid. However Layne has said they do use melodyne though very sparingly. When producing the acapella vocals of a few people in a group there will be spots that need to be adjusted even if it’s just slightly to make the overall sound and blend better on the recording. I would go so far as to say all professional singers use slight corrections on occasion on notes that are ever so slightly under or over the note. it’s pretty standard. But live, the majority of people would not even hear if a note is slightly off. If that makes sense. But basically even when you are using any kind of pitch correcting software, the note has to be extremely close to start or it will start to sound really distorted or like a robot when you correct it. In VoicePlay covers if you hear effects like that it’s usually on purpose to sound that way by artistic choice and not because they are pitch correcting. Which I think is also what you are saying. 😅 This interview with Layne is interesting on using pitch correction: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pBPDZ6Hwhus.htmlsi=-iCEIEPG-LG_B9P1

They have a beatboxer. They don't use electronic drums. The beatboxer makes the bass sing as low as possible because they grew up together and he likes to torture him.😅

OK, so Layne (beatboxer) arranged this and he loves testing Geoff and vice versa! So poor Geoff said they all had sore voices after this one. He did not ask to do a B0 - Layne made him 😛. This is indeed from Assassin's Creed - and Miracle of Sound gave VP "10 out of 10 ale horns" for this cover (see the pinned comment on the video). Layne is a beast on beat-boxing and can actually also rap. They added the rap to this version (wasn't in the original) - and J did a great job. a capella is "no accompaniment" - instruments can feature - just not accompany, BUT this had NO such additions. There were no digital drums here - Layne did that. He specialises in electronic sounds. They NEVER use programmed drums. They do make small effects on the vocals where it suits the song. I need to ask about auto tune because we are not aware that they use that extensively at all. Have you every heard them live? The arranger is also the person doing the video direction etc. but Eli (bald tenor) did a lot of the background and lighting. It was a very hot day and there was no aircon - so they all died of heat 😋 Not triggered at all over your opinion - just challenging it respectfully - hehe. Thanks for this! 🌹🕊

The song is an original written and composed by Miracle of Sound. From the original video I take it that it was at least inspired by "Assassins Creed Valhalla", but whether it was actually used in it, I cannot tell. There were no digital drums in that song, to my knowledge, but there were quite a lot sound effects - VoicePlay are quite open about that they do use those in some cases for artistic reasons. I guess the point here was that the effects were also used on Layne's beatboxing. I have absolutely no problem with your scores - they are yours, not mine. As for me: I like the track, but it's not my favourite song by VoicePlay, either.

It should be said that Miracle of Sound is his own rabbit hole. He writes music inspired mostly by video games, movies or tv. Check the 'Miracle of Sound' RU-vid channel for the original. He has a few versions of it there. Everything from the first original (set to video game play images) to a metal version and another with a bass who can get as low as Geoff did here.

No programmed drums, that's all Layne, their beatboxer. With some post production effects and possibly layered multi tracks here and there.. I get your confusion though, he can produce sounds I wouldn't think as humanly possible before! thanks for the reaction..

The fact is, this was arranged to focus on everyone, so I respect your comments about not focusing on Geoff, the bass. Yes, of course, we all know Geoff is the star of this, but without the harmonies being tight, his bass would fall flat as they are moving to different sections. That is the only way that low of bass singing will work; having those supportive highs. For most of those solos, Geoff is hanging out several semitones below what a typical choral bass could even hit (his highest note in his first solo section was an F#2; nearly at the very bottom of the tessitura for a choral bass).

Just FYI - I'm guessing you are probably aware, however, it is a bit disconcerting that the VP video is not sync'd with their audio. And it would be nice if the audio was a tad louder. Hope this can be avoided in the future. If not, well at least we are getting your reaction without those problems. Also, the writer for the rap part is a guy named Alfredo Austin. He has written rap for VoicePlay before (their cover of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition").

Left to right.... Layne Stein - beatboxer, baritone, arrangements. Co-owner of Pattycake Productions with former member Tony Wakim. Cesar De La Rosa - baritone, tenor. J None - baritone, former member. Now with the US Navy chorus. Eli (like jelly) Jacobson - tenor, rock tenor, lighting, arrangements. Geoff Castellucci - bass, arrangements, has a solo channel.

Not an argument with your scoring, the number doesn't really matter to me, but more to correct misinformation: That was vocal percussion. Filtered? Yes. Heavily in a couple of places. This stands out as one of their most 'produced' videos. But there were no instrumentals in here. That was Layne's (and in a couple of places Geoff's) beatboxing the whole way through. They've used instruments in three songs in the last quarter century - all violin. Once in Nothing else matters. Once in... Warriors, I think, where Layne and J.None both played the violin, and once in The Lion Sleeps Tonight, one of their goofier shorts. If you want to count it, technically, Caesar also had a shackle he shook to add ambience to the rhythm in Hoist the Colours. Have a great day, thanks for the video, and thanks for making sure the rest of the guys got their due recognition!
