I hardly need to add that hockey seems like the toughest sport to call in an effective, dramatic manner. High-speed, no stoppage, not much scoring . . . makes Doc's skills all the more impressive.
The first time I heard his voice, I was in another room -- I bolted toward the TV and said WHAT THE HELL ? It was Mike Emrick, calling a goal in an p-r-e-s-e-a-s-o-n hockey game --though it sounded like GAME 7 for the Stanley Cup ! I have been hooked ever since. The man is dynamic, passionate, and an icon not just among announcers, but for his entire SPORT. It is at this time every season that I am reminded that he is THE BEST ! Can't wait for Game 3 in Los Angeles .....
Among the best play-by-play announcers in sports. A gifted extemporaneous talker, storyteller. Beyond his remarkable skills on the mic, his evident enjoyment of his job and the game of hockey--his infectious enthusiasm--is very charismatic. Deserves all the appreciation ten times over.
ive grown to really like Doc. especially hearing him the final 2 rounds of the playoffs doing the Bruins games. although it seems like every game he finds a way to bring up the Hershey Bears. its kinda funny
My favorite will always be Pat Foley but Doc Emrick is amazing. He does such a fantastic job with national broadcasts, its so refreshing to hear a national sports thats actually good and energetic. Could you imagine Stanley Cup games being called by Joe Buck? *shudders*
Cant believe he's leaving. I mean i understand why he 65 and needs to lighten his load but still. i heard him the first time during the 95 finals and he was instantly my favorite. it wasnt until 2 years later that i found out by reading a hockey stats encyclopedia that he was our announcer and I was like cool!
Oh boy, you have no idea how much I miss Mike Emrick in the Devils broadcast booth. I'm not saying that Steve Cangilosi is horrible, is just that trying to replace Doc is like replacing Bob Sheppard as the voice of Yankee Stadium.
Of all the things that EA sports does to improe the game, they have not touched the commentary in the last 6 years, aside from adding new player names... WHICH ARE STILL MISPRONOUNCED!!!
@zinchukk Dude that would be amazing. But nhl wouldnt be able to do this guy justice. He has too much to offer and too much knowledge that I dont think NHL would be able to get in and have it realistic to how good Doc Emrick actually is.
Play-by-play announcers should do JUST THAT. Talk about the ACTUAL action that's going on the ice. NOT tell stories about what the player did when he was 10 years old, what players do during the off-season, or what their superstitions are. Gary Thorne, Bob Cole, Rick Jeanneret, Jack Edwards, and Dave Strater are play-by-play announcers. Mike Emrick is nothing but a nasal voiced story teller who only does play-by-play when he feels it's necessary.
Doc Emrick has got to be one of the worst big game announcers I've ever heard. With his lame and stupid and snarky and unfunny comments. Whenever I watch an NHL playoff game with him in the announcer's booth, I feel like kissing the person who invented the "mute" button. Emrick is the Joe Buck of hockey. Every single one of his attempts to be funny or clever falls flat. And when I say every single one, I mean every....single....one. He sucks in so many ways it's hard for me to articulate them all.
Sike doc is a goat commentator if you close your eyes and just listen to him he will paint a vivid picture in your mind with the vocal he says it's great he is one of the best announcer's ever
