Wow John, wow !! You could’ve made a 4 hour plus documentary just with this hero alone. The way he soulfully answers the questions and his authentic emotions are grasping and chilling and really got to me. So sad he is no longer with us, I could listen to him for hours on end, not to mention I’ve staring at his photos for years. RIP sir, you’re in a much better place now……. Just the most emotional, heart rending, gut punch Vietnam veteran interview I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen and read a lot these guy’s stories. But there’s something about John……..he’s just 100% genuine and unassuming. I hate like hell that he’s passed away, I would have loved to have met him. Thanks for your Vietnam service buddy.

RIP Sgt Hosier and thank you for your service. My wife lost a cousin in Vietnam who was a Sea Bee and another who served as Army Tunnel Rat, he came home not wounded, but had PTSD.. I was drafted out of high school at 18 prior to Vietnam War durning the Cold War and sent to Korea for 13months. Our country is not in a good place at this time, we do not need any more of are military killed, we had to many wars in the last 20 years.

As a disabled retired Vietnam Vet who was in 'Nam between Jan 4-'68 to June 4-'68, I was in what is called EOD and was wounded four times. I have listened to many Vets describing their tour, and this is one of the best. Bless him. I understand him. I quietly lived my life with blindness in one eye, deafness in one ear, hard of hearing in the other ear, fragments in the brain, and critical brain damage. I am 79 now and get around on crutches as my nervous system is now suffering critically and has been for the past almost 20 years since the '68 head wound. The VA refuses to recognize the brain wound and my nerve-brain depreciation. I thus receive zero compensation for it. This is the real world. I understand I am not alone and that many Vietnam veterans have to suffer through similar "shove it" rejections by the government VA. I was told by a private neurologist that the VA does not recognize my type of brain damage even though the fragments went through the brain and are still there, and I am now suffering literal neurological damage as a result. This is the nature of brain damage. The lucky soldiers with such wounds either died or did not suffer physical disabilities like mine. Welcome home from Vietnam. The "welcome home" (sic) lasts until we leave this earth. I say no more.

This gentlemans story is one of the best ones I have seen. RIP Mr Hosier!

These fellows who capture the images of war have been one of our greatest assets in battle. They've been able to provide images of our military raising flags, caring for our wounded in field hospitals, and showing the truth of the American spirit in extending a helping hand to small children and needy as seen in Sgt Hosier's photos. Thank you Sgt Hosier, and all those that risk their lives to capture photos of our men and women in uniform that will last forever, and allow us at home to take pride in what they do.

I'm 32. A millennial born in 92. I cry over all these men. I cannot fathom what they've been through and cannot begin to put in words how much respect I have for every single one of them.

Vietnam 1968-69 101st airborne 2/502. I didn’t see much combat. I watch a lot of these presentations. Most, while I enjoy watching them, don’t get under my skin. But this one did. This man saw a lot and he bared his sole. He made me recall some good times and some hard times. He must carry a pot of sorrow or all the death and destruction he saw. I hope he has the support he needs and deserves. God bless you John Hosier.

I have viewed dozen of interviews with Vietnam vets and this one was the best of all of them. John was a great storyteller and the emotions added to it. Too bad he never got the chance to write a book. I was a student in high school and college during the war so hearing these stories means a lot to me to know what really went on. Thanks.

They really need to make more Vietnam movies, just to show the horror’s of war and how corrupt America’s government was and still is today. It would teach the younger generations how not to trust the government, politicians and the military. 😢

I went to DC in ‘93 and worked in an artist’s booth. I believe I met John & went to the officer’s ball with him & friends. Is this the same John that did artwork on envelopes postmarked with the first day of issue, Vietnam Veterans stamps??

I'm 69 and my Dad has been dead for 16 years. He was career military, and a veteran of WW2, Korea and Vietnam. He was a combat engineer in Europe during WW2 and was wounded three times, but only accepted two Purple Hearts. In Korea he was not in active combat having been assigned to a regular engineer unit...though they came under long range artillery fire a few times. In Vietnam he was in an engineer battalion which built the air base at Phan Rang. He never mentioned them being attacked or anything there. He was a major at that time and I'm not sure what his actual job in the battalion was....."S" something or other. He did mention he flew a lot to various places by helicopter and how on some runs the helicopter would fly high and on others over dense jungle how the pilot flew right above the trees and said they'd have to fly directly over an enemy firing straight up to get hit whereas if they were a thousand feet up every tom dick and harry could take potshots at them. Dad always acted like Korea and Vietnam were no big deal...just missed being home. But Mr. Hosier just taught me something about my long dead Father. Like Hosier said...Dad knew if you were in a war zone death could come from any direction and when you least expected it. It had to have been in the back of his mind all the time and been very stressful. In fact I think he was often suffering ptsd his entire Army career from private to Lieutenant Colonel. I was 12 when he went to Vietnam and prior to that he had a pretty explosive temper and you never knew what would set him off...it was like walking on egg shells around him sometimes. I got whacked a lot. His very first words to me upon returning from Vietnam were "son, I'm never going to hit you again"........and he didn't. I make it sound like he was a bad dad...but far from it.........and we became close friends. He mellowed out so much after his retirement. Until Mr Hosier's accounts I sort of just gave hime credit for being in one shooting war...that being WW2....but now I know the other couple or so years he spent in Korea and Vietnam his head must have been on a swivel the whole time....yet still have to remain calm, function, and get the jobs done. Incidentally, Dad once remarked on something Hosier said that rings oh so true. When Hosier talked about the rigged 105 shell throwing him twenty feet away on his back yet killing the two guys behind him and he comes out with out a scratch, it reminded me of what Dad said about artillery and how random the kill zone was. You could be inside or outside the killing range of the exploding shell and get either wounded, dead, or not a scratch. A round might land 5 yds from you and leave you unscathed and kill someone 35 or 50yds away.

I was called Desert Storm as an operating room technician. My experience inspired me to go to nursing school and get my degree so I could work at the position I seeked uponmy return. The military was both good and bad for me. I am still working hard on trying to build a relationship with my son.

The trauma these young men went through boggles the mind, after the passage of all that time it just simmers below the surface, there's no escaping it.
