In this video I remove the alternator motor and controller and install a new hub drive motor kit from Voilamart.
Please check the links below if you are interested in a similar kit. These are affiliate links and if you make a purchase I will receive a few cents commission.
Thanks for your support.
I was having a problem with the alternator motor as I think it had twisted and the chain was coming off. Due to the issues I've mentioned before I didn't think it was worth going any further with this bike. I may re-purpose the motor for another bike if I can figure out a gear reduction but that is a project for the future.
I decided I wanted to try a hub motor as I have never had one before, I wanted something reasonably powerful but also cheap and this one seemed a good compromise.
Just to confirm I am not sponsored by anyone and I bought this kit with my own money. My experience so far with Voilamart has been positive with them shipping the kit quickly and helping me after I made a mistake during ordering.

I'm building similar cheap 1000w and noticed no levels of assist so presumed cadence sensor would just full speed, I will probably just leave it off and use throttle but still pedal to help up hills and save battery. I have a fiido d3s which has geared motor and little wheels, pretty good for what it is and handle hills pretty well but wanted a cheap kit to try out on my mountain bike. Ideally I would like a bafang ultra but that means new bike and lots of dosh lol.

They do 2 1500w kits... throttle only like this and the one with the display (sw900).. the controllers are different internally though.. the display communicates with controller and power level is adjustable if you get the one with display.. your twist throttle/key thing will have a 6 pin connector.. kits with display have 5 pin plug and a 3 pin plug for the throttle that doesn't have the key or power gauge (bike is now turned on and power level set using lcd's buttons)

Ok....do you want to hear the truth about this product? Yep, i bought this exact same kit along with a 52 volt 20 ar battery along with a schwinn hybrid that i bought from wally world. First ebike i ever touched, i have had it a couple 3 weeks and 200+miles. I did not use the supplied brake levers, i ride street bike, i know how to shut the throttle when using the brak and i didnt use the pedal assist control because i have a blown out knee and didnt intend to do any peddling. The hub was a little wide for the frame so i used an automotive scissors jack to spread the frame out a half inch. The tire that came with the kit wore out in 150 miles, i ride mostly street so i bought a set of slicks...good for a little more top speed. It ran ok when i first put it together and it ran a little better the first half dozen times i recharged it. I did notice something odd, the speed increased the first 2/3 of the twist throttle but didnt increase speed after that. I thought it was a little odd that the 3 wires for the motor from the speed controller were quite a but thicker than the wires that cam from the hub so i rand a voltage drop test on each of the motor wires, Digital volt meter, poke a hole in the wire where it comes out of the hub and the other probe stuck in the wire where it comes out of the controller and ride it full throttle, The meter reads the amount of voltage lost...aka resistance. Over a volt each wire...3 volts lost...my 52 volt battery and only 49 was getting to the motor, It looked like they used the thickest wire they could use and still fit through the slot in the axle into the motor. So i went down to local hobby shop and bought the wire used on rc electric cars. 14 gauge was what came out of the controller. The wire is different than most wire, it has about 100 very fine strands and the insulation is silicon, it will take a lot more heat, its much more flexible and has very little resistance. It is to thick through the axle so i cut the motor wires off one the outside leaving the stock wires to the motor, The longer a wire is the thicker it needs to be to pass the same amount of current and the thin wires that were left shouldn't be a problem. I cut the ring terminals off the speed controller and soldered on 30 amp bullet connectors that got with the wire.It ran noticeably better, It accelerated better and the dead spot after 2/3 throttle was gone...it runs a 37-38 mph gps. The motor is so quiet i cant even hear it...so ya..its a decent deal...couple things i noticed that i didnt realize at the time that wish i had known, the speed controller does not have a usb output to charge a cell phone or charge usb headlight/tail light or any other low voltage output so i bought lights that run off 48 volts. It ran 33 right out of the box and a couple mods..slicks and motor wire was worth 4 more mph .

Unless you have amazingly strong front forks I wouldn't recommend having any more than 250W on the front wheel, maybe 500W but certainly not 1500W. You can have a 2 wheel drive ebike by using 2 motors, 2 controllers and 1 throttle by linking the throttle to both controllers. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SHXQr2MPJS8.html

@@peterdewey3395 From what I've heard the 1500W motor can handle 2000 to 3000 watts so if that is true then your 1000W motor should easily handle 1500W. If you check online there are ways to cool the motor so that it can handle more power if it starts to get hot. @alibro7512
@alibro7512 5 лет назад
To be honest I haven't used it much in standard form but top speed is around 25 to 30mph depending on your battery. I would only recommend it if you are happy to tinker with it or and replace the bits that are poor or you're happy to use throttle only. The motor seems OK but the controller is very low quality with cadence control (it goes when you pedal) which is terrible. It's the cheapest kit available for a reason.
@chickenbradly
@chickenbradly 5 лет назад
Yo man, I bought the same one he did on Amazon. On flat, 35mph is the standard for me but if you're on a long enough stretch you can get 40 out of it, although I wouldn't suggest pushing it past 35. I suggest getting a 52v battery to make these numbers possible, a 48v is not going to cut it imo. Like op said, it is great if you are looking for just throttle (to be honest, I just pedal assist it up the hill and keep the throttle steady at a low level, close to same thing). For my needs, it's amazing and worth every penny I put into it. PM me if you're looking for other specifics
@alibro7512
@alibro7512 5 лет назад
@@chickenbradly Since I made this video I took the controller apart and resoldered all of the high current tracks as in places they had no solder at all. This could have caused hot spots and maybe even burnt out the tracks because of what I did next. I bridged the two shunts with solder to reduce their resistance and finally put plenty of heatsink compound in all the places it should be. The difference is amazing and this controller is now faster than my other one.

Yes it's completely normal. In the controller are large capacitors that act like a short circuit until they charge up so you get a spark and a crack noise. It's not pleasant and probably not good for it. To prevent this get anti spark connectors.

Got my 1000w going with a 17.5mah 48v (tested at 54v) from caprouge.com.au/ (still testing it) , a $30 2nd hand aluminum Diamondback ($3-400) new. I'm 115kg/250lb and 6'2". I managed 50kmh/30mph no problems, 12 times, and got 40km/25miles with 20 of those carrying 15kgs on my back. It was beginning to slow a bit by then but managed another 5 km at 35k/h for the hell of it... I drove it like I owned it but running it softly ; maybe i could have got 50-60km out of it... forget 250w, its pointless... For the money I have no problems.... I suspect, from reading comments, that maybe the 1000w and higher models are all the same wheel just with different controllers. torque arm- I welded the supplied axle washers to a 3mm steel plate, cut it to shape and bolted them through the tapped holes used to attach rear rack arms. Drill and tap them if none on yours. better than the crappy torque arms on ebay.

Sounds like fun. I haven't bothered with torque arms and so far had no issues. I'm not that heavy (80kg) and the controller is only 1500W so it will probably be OK. I think the 1500W motors are bigger and heavier than 1000W motors but I don't know by how much.

@@alibro7512 As far as I can tell, the 1000W and 1500W are essentially the same from Voilamart, minus the internal controller and the cable harness breaks out the hall lines internally. In hindsight I think because I am overvolting it anyway at 52v it might have been better to have kept the controller externally. I've seen a guy on forums literally remove the controller and redo the entire wiring hardness for his 1500W to essentially convert it back to the 1000W version with external controller. Looked like a real pain, but in my case I had nowhere to mount a controller that wouldn't be in the way. So I think it's a fair compromise.

I've got 2000wat comes with 1500wat controller it's got some power from standing start 40mph some times. I'm charging wheel to 1500w which will make it faster better range and battery using if the lcd is set up properly which they are already set at factory over 40mph easy and like I y open throttle in low gear it will throw you up and of. I just got mine running a few days ago... Already got about 50mi on the wheel. It's AMAZING!! you definitely need a torque arm if you use the 1500w setting which pushes me 36mph!!! Insane power, I'm using a 48v 20ah and it drains quickly at 1500w.
@alibro7512
@alibro7512 5 лет назад
I fitted torque arms since making this video too as the frame is pretty light. If you think it's good now you should try the "upgrade" I did after making this. I added lots of solder to the heavy duty tracks on the controller as the manufacturer had done a really bad job there creating possible weak spots. I then bridged two of the three current shunts with more solder and added lots of heatsink paste before putting back together. It's even better now and probably more like it should have been from the factory.

@@dcos013 Hi David I haven't used this kit much as the bike is too small and I'm building another ebike so I can't give you any proper numbers but it is easy to work out. The controller draws around 30 Amps and you have a 14Ah battery so on full power it will empty the battery in 14/30 or 25ish minutes. In the real world you'll probably get closer to an hour at around 20mph so a range of around 20 miles. I mostly tootle around at 15mph using peddle assist so with your battery you could probably get double or treble that. Of course all the above depends on your battery being of good quality and genuine 14Ah which can't be taken for granted, there are lots of dodgy battery packs out there and I was bitten that way myself by buying direct from China.

I bought the 1000w kit a few years back and it was the one that came with the sw900 screen but i quickly changed the controller to a KT sinewave one as the one in the box was a crappy square wave that is noisy as all hell and also changed the screen to an LC3 and it performed great and utterly silent, so like you pointed out a controller upgrade is a must, the motor has lasted well though after 2 years of daily commute use i did have to replace the bearings. As for the PAS sensor it is sadly a flaw of how they work they can only sense rotation but not how fast or how much power you are trying to put down and a new controller sadly does not really fix the issue of controlling speed by PAS rotation, it just reinforces how stupid the UK ebike laws are where they will not allow a throttle that can precisely control speed and increase safety but a pas sensor that goes full send is totally legal, what you can do and you might have already done it is get a KT controller it will allow you to set the assistance level of the PAS, it will not control speed but it will control the power the PAS will deliver though the side effect is you nerf the power in all situations using PAS.

Vincenzo Tatti you will need another controller as it depends on the controller you get with the pack. The one that comes in this video was same as mine. It won’t work with the SW900 without internal controller wiring fiddling. I didn’t fancy that and ended up buying and fitting another controller. And after looking at pictures on listings on EBay I got one there. I had bought the SW900 first thinking it would just click on . Nope - and as the video says the PA is a bit fiery and after a few turns of the cranks it kicks in big time even in 250 W mode with a bit of a jump in speed as in the video. Then the issue is gearing keeping up. Basically Even with the cheap controller/throttle for the price it’s great fun.

@@CBFREE Hi Colin Thanks for letting us know about this. I wasn't aware the controller was different but I guess from the sellers point of view it makes sense. As I said before, I bought this kit for the motor and considered the controller was a bonus. For that reason I didn't really care too much about the quality (or lack) of it. I've already replaced the controller with an older one which came with cruise control and I use that instead of PAS.

Ali Bro Cruise control sounds a good - no thats a great idea. Something about 15mph with brake cutoff would be ideal. I just discovered there is a walk mode on the SW900 which moves you along at .. yup walking speed! You press the centre button then the bottom button once. Found this out when It nearly walked out of my garage on its own while messing about trying to fine tune PAS. Saying this I just bought a Bafang to put on a new build to compare. My wife says “why do you need two bikes?” :) With the Voilamart the only issue after 700 miles is this PA rocket mode saying that you adapt your riding. I pedal then woosh then coast till back to 10-12 mph then pickup the pace with pedaling. Not snapped a chain yet.

Would a 48v 15ah battery be enough for this motor
@alibro7512
@alibro7512 4 года назад
A 15Ah battery will be able to supply 15A for one hour. Flat out this motor will draw 1500W/48V or around 31A (watts = Volts x Amps so Amps = Watts / Volts). In theory that means you could ride flat out for around 30 minutes with a 15Ah battery or around 25 to 30 miles but lots of other factor need to be taken into account. Will you be pedalling, how fast will you be going and how far do you need to go? So I would say yes but you might say no, it just depends on your needs.

@@lekebanti9248 I'm no expert and there are so many variables it is hard to give an estimate but for the voltage I would only go for 52V if the Ah rating is the same or higher. 52V will be a bit faster but unless you want to ride around at 40mph it's not a big deal. Range depends on quality of battery bought (is it REALLY 15Ah) riders weight, terrain, tyres, speed, wind etc but I'd expect at least 50 miles if not too heavy handed with the throttle.

where is your speed sensor that is the reason why the cadence sensor is not working there is no Feedback to the controller from the wheel speed... Mine was Wired along with the HALL Sensor they control the brushless motor... and that throttle display is all you have? you also really need that eco, normal and boost switch default is normal but it will cut your range in half. three-wire plug red, white, black for the speed sensor your kit should have come with a second EM sensor that you strap on the back fork and attach a magnet to the spokes. I am setting up the exact same unit as you are. also, you can leave wires undone shore circuit Hazzard might hurt your controller. I labelled them all and caption taped the Unnessecary antitheft alarm etc all I have for lights is one 38VDC output I am thinking you can put it into a regulatory board to power lights and signals. you also did not say what voltage your Pack is 38/48/50VDC

Hi Justin Thanks for your comments. I don't remember seeing a speed sensor in the kit and watched the unboxing again to check so either it is missing from my kit or maybe they change the kits from time to time depending on what components they can purchase. If there had been a speed sensor I would have connected it. Just for clarity the cadence sensor does work and if the 15mph limiter is connected it is usable so long as your happy to be doing 15mph and no slower. I wouldn't like to have it connected if I was weaving through traffic and with the limiter disconnected it's downright dangerous. As for lights I have one similar to this headlight which is brilliant for all voltages but the rears are a bit harder to get for all voltages. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/QZO-CNSUNNYLIGHT-Motorcycle-18LED-Headlight-DRL-Lamp-18W-2000LM-Fog-Spotlight/132832340056?hash=item1eed6ca858:g:~TkAAOSwz6pb0KWY My one has a built in buck converter but some of the cheap rears I bought have only current limiting resistors which get very hot.

@@alibro7512 you might have to have that sensor to get it to work properly. I had that happen with my kit good components and a LCD screen and a super cheap twist throttle. I recommend the display you might be able to solve all you problems being able to monitor the controller. Improper settings can cause computers to malfunction you might want it do what I did I contacted the seller about a data sheet for wiring To check if the components where plunged into the right plugs they might have plugged it in wrong? Or I just got lucky and got a good controller... All in all I hope you get it running properly I was wondering do you have an auto program wire if that is plugged in it can cause issues its used to setup motor direction and solve a jerky motor.

Another thing my kit did not come with the controller motor bus connector so I'll have to bolt them together and wind electric tape around the connections and my components where not attached so I had to find out off the net which plug did what some where super hard to find like the forward reverse wires. Could be a hilarious mistake if I plugged that one in wrong....

@@JustinJJHCS1 Thinking back to when I bought mine I think there was an option to buy one with a display and I went for the cheaper one without. I was originally only looking for a motor and this kit was cheaper than a motor on it's own so I figured I was buying a motor with a free kit as well. I don't think my controller has the connections for a display but maybe you can confirm what they are. It might be fun to find a suitable display and see what it does. Can you set the speed on your controller or use it for cruise control? The self learning wires are common to all ebike controllers I've seen but I've never found they do much except change direction, even my alternator motors were smooth straight off. That style of connector block os pretty common and cheap so it might be an idea to order one. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dual-Row-Covered-Electric-Barrier-Screw-Strip-Terminal-Block-Positions-600V-15A/222973231765?hash=item33ea3d8295:m:m-yXaaVnLFIR6mnOJHnbFiQ I've done the bolt and tape job too and it isn't very satisfactory.

@@alibro7512 yes and yes looked it up on you tube the peddle assist on some controllers are set to 5 which is 2 setting higher then you need... and yes you can get throttles that have an extra plug that plug into the display that allow for a + or - setting for the motor and it cancels the setting when you apply the breaks and the wires that you use to plug into the USB for computer flashing ROM are the same wires you use for a display just check your data sheet and put an appropriate plug in there. @@Kobokhop22 In theory a 20Ah battery will give you over 30 minutes at full power as this kit will draw 30 to 40 amps. Full power for this kit is around 30mph on the flat so would get you approx 15 to 20 miles. In the real world your battery could be less powerful than claimed, you might have hills soft tyres etc but you'll probably not be on full power the whole time and if you pedal at all then the range should be at least doubled so I would say 20Ah is more than enough. The new battery I'm building is 52V and 30Ah and I'm hoping for a range around 60 miles with some pedalling.

I was looking to get the 1500w controller and as it being designed to handle 1500w instead of the 1000w controller I have at the moment (and blown 2 of so far) and actually downgrade it (remove one of the 3 shunts) to make it a 1000w controller. The advantage would be more fet's to spread the load, a bigger case to spread the heat, and easy to get hold of as the 1000w seem to be sold out at the moment. @@alibro7512 I don't have a scope to test for sure, but on my kit with an led control panel I'm pretty sure it takes signal from cadence sensor and then sends a voltage to controller just like throttle. I think cadence signil is pulsed since it's spinning magnets, but I'm pretty sure led control board just sends a 1-4 voltage like throttle. I think that's why they all just work like a full throttle switch, especially if you run higher voltage. I haven't tested yet, but I think resistor of correct value would work to drop voltage for a more reasonable cadence . If you don't have cadence sensor option on your controller you might be able to use cycle anylist to add it. Might want to contact them and ask about it.
