Congrats. Would love less pointed entries though and more tapered. The secret? Let the singing be the result of listening, not the other way around. Listen like you life depends on it. Blending then becomes like silk sheets. For what it's worth from an Irishman in Spain.
Tell you what - that audience couldn't be more receptive and respectful. The silence, poise and stillness throughout this performance was cavernously special.
That was the longest complete silence after a performance I have ever heard. The audience is to be commended for taking their cue from the piece’s perfectly straight diminuendo finish.
@@rhinocerossel Indeed, that is usually the most powerful moment for a group where all the emotions of a locked in performance meet and is a memory that never leaves. As an audience as well!
Spring 1970 my high school choir performed this piece while visiting another school. That performance was perfect. It is unfortunate that we never recorded it. This performance brings back such deep emotions. Beautifully done. Ausgezeichnet!
The fact is each individual voice is enhanced and sound collectively created together is magically improved by the harmonics of the choir as whole , that is the unique genius of Samual Barber. The choir gains energy from the mutual contributions of their fellow voices. Brilliant performance.
I went to a 2:00 PM special showing of the movie Platoon when it first came out in Eau Claire WI. It was for Vietnam vets only. There were maybe 50 of us scattered throughout the theater. When this incredible piece was played during the movie, it crawled under my skin and into the lining of my heart and has stayed there since that moment. When the movie ended, there was silence for about 15 seconds and then one guy yelled, "Yeah, it was like that, man ." And we applauded. It's almost 50 years since I was a witness to the fall of Saigon. My work with the national security agency has rendered me 100% disabled even now. I still don't know what to do with the experience. But I'm still alive, so that's a success of a sort.
My husband was stationed in Vietnam too. He was a cable splicer for communications. He came home with scars we couldn’t see or fix. After he passed away I went to see Platoon too. I can still see the movie when I hear this music. It’s so beautiful and so emotional!
Dear sir! Thank you for your service to freedom, democracy and justice for your country and the rest of this world. Your sacrifice is appreciated by those who enjoy the fruits of your efforts! Respectful greetings from just one average post-war guy in Norway...
Surely one of the most difficult pieces and one of the most glorious. Barber was very smart to have created this choral setting. I cannot imagine a finer performance. Sublime.
Oh dear, you probably have got many days before you to live, before your funeral ceremony. My feeling is that it's quit ealy to dream and plan for thatfrom now. Anyway, whatever you plan or prepare, you will not be there to enjoy it. The plans of God for our lives, sometimes are far wider than we can ever imagine, regardless of our age or passion for life. Remember Elijah the prophet. He asked warmly to die, very tired cause of the conditions of his life. Despite that, God gave him strength, to go on, in order to fulfill His plans for Him. Much more glorious plans, that he could ever imagine. He met the God on the mountain, he did not die, but ascended to heaven with a fire chariot. And finally, he appeared on the mountain of Trasfiguration of Jesus, together with Moses. I used to pay much attention to my funeral ceremony. For its impression and also, for the words that other people, will say for me. But then I started to realize, that it's a kind of desire for legacy. A vanity without any value, comparing it with the reality of Eternity that I will belong to. The opinion of the other people for me, is useless, when the opinion of God is that matters. As he sees the deeps of my heart motives, for everything I do or think. Good or bad. And even He knows all my Truth, he accepts me and loves me unconditionally. Because Jesus on the Cross gave me the privilege to accept His gift, He to become my Fther. Even I don't worth it. The wedding ceremony, has nothing to do with the life in marriage. As well as, the funeral ceremony, has nothing to do with my eternal life. Sometimes, when I hear a music or a hymn, I dream my funeral ceremony. But then, I wake up and say, Jesus, my real treasure, is to walk with you and your Love in this life, under any circumstances, easy or hard. And to live with you in the Eternity. So help me to pay more attention to the eternals, than to the temporaries. And then, my soul is getting joyful and my heart prays for give me to serve Him, helping others, Not for me, but for them. I will not stop myself, to imagine my funeral ceremony day. But now, dreaming the presence of Jesus there and touching people to decide to walk with Him and be together with Him in Eternity, as I will be already there. The greater reward is to meet people that were saved by His blood through you. Something that we'll see only there, even we believe now that our passing from this life has not touched anyone. Never underestimate the power of your witness
I want I want . You should want for your soul to be prayed for and for your sins to be forgiven not some self indulgence that won’t matter once your before your maker

We can leave all this 'most' behind us :) We are like the shepards: When Gabriel wants to reach us... we can`t escape - and we do not want to... Love from here !
This is as beautiful a performance of this fine work as you can get. The voices are absolutely stunning; the balance and blend are total perfection; the diction and clarity of pronunciation is outstanding as well. It also shows that one does not need to hear this from a larger chorus of singers, as the 'full effect' here is displayed in all its musical intent. Combining these two wonderful groups was a wonderful idea, and more of this collaboration between VOCES8 and VOKETT HANOVER would be totally welcomed and a real treat. Samuel Barber himself would indeed be pleased with this outstanding performance, that is quite certain.
@@staffanolofsson8201 ...'Beauty' that renders me 'mega goosebumps' each and every time I listen this Samuel Barber masterpiece. This is a masterful presentation by arguably the best 'combination' of professional voices you can get. Thanks for your supportive response...'ENJOY' it as I do.
@@tonymercer7759 ...only one small expression out of many, many more out there who enjoy and appreciate 'extra fine' presentations such as this. I would have to pay a lot to see such vocal/choral perfection in person; however, we have the internet to give us all this for our unending enjoyment. I'm in awe every time I listen to it, and I would like many more of such combined performances by these two 'ultra-superb' groups. I hope you agree...

Voces8 ist einfach unübertrefflich, meine Hochachtung ihrer geschulten Stimmen, sogar im pp, was die höchste Kunst des Gesangs ist. Danke für diesen Genuss und Berühren der Seele.
Barber’s Adagio is my all time favourite piece of music, particularly as written for strings, but these singers have put it to another level. Truly, truly beautiful.
La plus belle supplication auprès de l'Agneau de Dieu que je connaisse chez les compositeurs contemporains ! La voix humaine fait des prodiges mais quel travail pour atteindre cette perfection quasi céleste ! Merci ! Un très Joyeux Noël à vous tous ! Angoulême, France
Absolutely stunning… No one hears this work without remembering the London Symphony performing this as a tribute to the victims of 9/11. What a magnificent rendition.❤
When you finish a performance, and the audience is so smitten they can't respond for quite a long time, you did well. You made an impact they will not forget. Now, I need a tissue.
Wow……….. just wow!!!!!! This has been one of my favorite pieces of work for many years and I don’t think I’ve heard a recording in brass, strings, or vocals that hasn’t ruined a phrase at some point in this piece because it is so difficult. Beautifully done! The balance was amazing, the tone was amazing, the phrasing was amazing, the pitch was amazing and clear especially in the sopranos on the high notes. Absolutely wonderful performance and I am wondering when you are coming to Seattle to perform. I would love to come see you!!!!! Thank you for this wonderful rendition of Samuel Barbers piece!!! All the best!!!
Shaggnasty, it’s never too late. The simple message when Jesus was on earth gave was repent and believe the gospel. Romans chapter 10 verses nine and 10 gives you a simple template to salvation. That if you confess with your mouth, Jesus as Lord of your life and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made for salvation. For whosoever shall call on the Lord shall be saved.
It's not really God or religion what you need, you need hope and strength, to convince yourself that you can be truly good and leave a positive impact in those around you, to apologize to those you have hurt before and live a positive life from now on. But to really achieve this you must do this not from selfish fear of eternal damnation, but because you truly and selflessly want to better the world and be a good person, you don't need to save a country or be a superhero, you just need to lend a hand to someone in need, listen and give support to someone struggling, just be patient with people. That said don't let yourself become a punching bag for others. Let your religion be a source of strength, not a source of fear.
I’ll pray for you my friend 🙏🏻 I was an atheist for a decade and a heroin addict for 7 years, and you can imagine the awful things I did to support my habit. When I hit my lowest low I called out to God “if you are real please help me” and He came through in a major way. It is NEVER too late to turn in humility to our Lord and Savior. Much love to you ❤
Samuel Barber's Agnus Dei is a choral arrangement of his timeless work, Adagio for Strings. Barber put the Latin words of the liturgical Agnus Dei to his original 1936 work. The partition calling for a mixed choir and optional accompaniment was written in 1967. The composer set religious words to this theme after reflecting for some time on how the Adagio for Strings was taken by the public and critics. After seeing how people associated his music with mourning and passion, Barber wanted to add a spiritual twist to this famous theme. Marked up similarly to the original, the slow introduction of the voices at the beginning prepares the chapter for the rest of the piece. Barber uses the words of Agnus Dei to dictate which intonations should be set to what voicings from the original. Initially it is the voice soprano who take the lead with the melody, but later on some of the other voices take the reigns of the melody. The repetition of the phrase « Agnus Dei » is significant as it shows what Barber was wanting from this arrangement. The haunting atmosphere of Agnus Dei has a similar effect to Adagio for Strings, with both using sustained lines and slow-moving melodies to create the desired effect. Although perhaps not as famous that the instrumental work, Agnus Dei is however popular in the register of choral music, with a number of futuristic vocal recordings of the work. Music is a beautiful refuge against the imperfection of the world. To Marie-Jeanne. *Lucien*
Unglaublich gut ! Wir wollen mehr vom Voktett hören !
Same here. Regardless of how often I listen to this, if the first high note is struck (beautifully), tears start to flow. I can't help it, and I don't want to.
What a great live performance! Perfect tempo and flow (not dragging like many of the performances of the Agnus Dei) and such a nice sound. Of course, we're listening to some of the best ensembles here! 👍👍👍 Voces16 and/or Doppelvoktett Hannover 😀😀😀
Heaven...just heaven. I've sung it once (and heard the orchestral version x times), and it will always remind me of my dearly-departed wife. Absolutely clear diction and flawless singing. I repeat: heaven, just heaven. JAT
Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings ... if my ear serves me well, this arrangement is in the same key as the original. Just an absolutely gorgeous vocal performance.
To say this performance was wonderful is not enough! I have heard this performed by much larger choirs, but I prefer your smaller group. It actually added to my enjoyment to hear the purity of the voices - simply sublime!!!
I’ve never heard it performed acapella before, divinely inspired, I don’t have the words to express the emotions the performance instills. Such pure beauty touches heaven and lifts our souls towards the incomprehensible for a few moments. Voces8 has given us a rendition that is absolutely stunning, even the audience didn’t want to break its spell with applause!
Comfortably laying in a warm bed only to get a massive chill down my spine at Andrea’s high note. Very very very grateful for that. I cannot believe how powerful music is, even after spending my whole teen and adult life studying it, composing it and playing it. ❤❤
Yes! have heard this so many times, and expecting every turn of the page, yet still on tendhooks approaching each change and THEN THRILLED as they hit it perfectly, so balanced, so clear, so certain of each turn and Andrea's effortless, precise controlled sustained high notes -- WOW! I think Barber would have been thrilled too. Hope your spine has recovered. What heights they took we the audience to, Thank God for the Artists who take pages of notes and breathe LIFE into them.
Beautiful that there was a significant silence before the clapping. The silence allows the music to resonate. I find too often people jump in with clapping thus breaking the sacred, silent moment.
gütiger Gott this is for BODY and SOUL 🌹SOULFOOD 🌹 Ich could fly away on these wayves into into a better world. Vielen herzlichen Dank you singing this Agnus Dei 💚✌
Samuel Barber hat nach 1945 unglaublich viel für das Land geleistet, in dem ich heute lebe. Das "adagio for strings" hier in der "Agnus dei" Version ist sein Meisterstück. Der Film dazu ist "Platoon".
Seriously, I’d expect the Choral gods of the world would’ve awarded y’all by now. This is UHHHHHHHmazing!!!! Who else sounds like this?!? You’re incredible. You all have made quite the contribution to humanity’s music treasury. Thank you.
Spring 1970 my high school choir performed this piece while visiting another school. Out performance that day was absolutely perfect. We never recorded this piece. Listening to this performance brings back such deep emotions. Beautiful! Ausgezeichnet!
This is music that effects the soul! Humans can reach such beauty and such destruction. I personally would prefer the beauty and it is here with this group!
Bravissimi Voices8!! Mi hanno ricordato.il tempo in cui cantavo anch"io Are you going tò Scarborouh Fait ed ero affascinata da questa dolcissima canzone., Grazie ❤
I'm fortunate to live near Duke University, where Voces8 will be singing at Duke Chapel in a few months time. The acoustics in that edifice are so incredible I know it will be a once in a lifetime experience. To hear such heavenly voices in such a perfect setting will be without compare.
The silence betrays the audience. They are absorbed and lost in the music and its immense feeling. There is no greater success for a choir (or musician) than a response of "awe." Beautiful.
