Volca FM2 and Volca Bass - Deep Space

Been trying to work backwards and minimize my setup. Love the limitations of the volcas with the sequencers and memory banks. When i use an external sequencer I don’t have as much fun at this point. Still coming at these jams from a verse/chorus structure background. Trying to forget all of that and let these jams breath, sometimes I feel like they go on too long. Also love to let myself go and just let the progression run and run and run.
Sample2 is setting tempo, into the FM2, into the Bass. All are running through a Yamaha mixer, with Strymon BigSky reverb on the bass.

A GR8 success!!! Less options = More creativity. I have been taking the same route in 2023 and couldn't be happier to fit my whole setup in a guitar case.

I haven't been using my sequencer, because my CPU is busted, it is cool to go back to actually playing notes

The Bass has so much potential. I always bring it into a song, but really need to sit down with it and just do a few solo jams.

@@floydyork my main way of using it is putting it in the three oscillator sequence a piece mode where I can make a individual 16-step sequence for each of the three oscillators and then during the song manually bring in and out the oscillators with the mute I've actually just recently been sort of experimenting with using the step edit function and trying to edit out some steps of each sequence to give it a polyrhythm Time

Fantastic. Kinda the same here.. I'm late in the game of Volcas, receiving a Sample2 at Christmas time last year, and been having so much fun with them that I've already accumulated an FM2, Kick, Drums, Keys, and a TS-1 lol. I still have a few vintage synths that I love and mess around with, but these are just a lot of fun and I find myself getting pretty lost in the moment, much to my wife's dismay lol. Looking forward to hearing more.

Appreciate the listen. What is your workflow at this point? How do you sequence everything? Im steadily shocked at how many configurations one can have with just a few pieces of equipment.

Honestly I've noticed with both the Volcas and the Pocket Operators it seems starting later is better. The folks who were there on day one got all 4 Volcas (and however many POs, 6?) but felt their limitations keenly. They were then constantly waiting for a new one to fill their own particular gap, after starting on a basically standard base. Starting later gives you a wider pool to pick from, so you can pick the ones best suited to your needs. And also work to minimise any gaps therein, maybe not even getting all the originals at all. (For instance someone might decide an FM(2) eliminates their personal need for Keys, though you've got both.)

@floydyork sorry for my super delayed response! My setup is similar, only thing I've added in the last few months is an Arturia Keystep 32. I thought it would help with playing keys a little better, plus the added funtion of using the sequencer. The Keystep Pro would probably be a better option, but I picked up the Keystep 32 used locally for a great price. I'm still learning and fiddling with it all so I'm certainly no expert. But I'm having a lot of fun!

Excellent progression and variation well done. one thing, and not saying I know more than you for sure, but my DJ ears would love to see your new sounds introduced at lower volumes and brought from the background forward. That would take it over the top! again excellent!!! would love to buy your tracks.

I've made some pretty spooky ambient noise tracks, using the Volca Bass with a distortion pedal, and a delay/reverb pedal. Fun machines.
@floydyork
@floydyork 6 месяцев назад
I’ve never considered the distortion idea! Have an old Boss distortion pedal and I might need to do that. When I put reverb on the volca bass it sounds so dreamy and completely transforms the sound

Hi, awesome track, just a dream... I have a question regarding the Volca FM around minute 5:57, I noticed it's playing in sequence but it seems to me that you have a different sequence after the first... and goes on in loop, 1st sequence then 2nd and 1 again... how do you do that? I didn't know it was possible on the FM.

@@baptistic I can speak for the keys, bass, and FM2, and all of them will save at least 8 sequences. To access each, you just press the memory button, and the key the sequence is played on, and it loads up. A very cool feature.

No, all three are running into a mixer. From the mixer I can listen with headphones, or run to speakers. I can also send the audio directly from the mixer to the camera.
