Volcanic Eruption in Iceland FOR the PEOPLE

A short human interest film about the most recent volcanic eruption in Iceland by Donal Boyd and Frank Nieuwenhuis.
For the first time ever in the history of our planet, thousands of people have been able to experience such an intense force of nature together.
As most people focused on the eruption itself, this short film turns the camera around on the people and explores what it really means to connect with nature through a collective experience.
Donal Boyd is a wildlife conservationist and fine art portrait photographer and filmmaker with the mission to promote "Conservation of Nature Through Visual Advocacy”.
Frank Nieuwenhuis is a director and filmmaker based in Iceland with the mission to capture and depict the essence of his subjects and their personal stories through cinematic and highly aesthetic visuals.
Location: Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland. Geldingadalur/Fagradalsfjall
Donation Link to support Icelandic Search and Rescue: www.icesar.com/...
DISCLAIMERS: (1) A volcanic eruption is quite obviously an unpredictable and immensely dangerous force of nature. In general viewing, such a spectacle is prohibited by poisonous gas, risk of exposure to scorching hot lava, and other various hazards. The production of this film involved careful assessment of all such various conditions that would minimize the risks involved. This included, but is not limited to, following official updates and advice from the Icelandic Meteorological Office, Icelandic Search and Rescue Team, and advisors on the ground at the eruption site. Utilization of technical equipment, including gas masks, and gas detectors to monitor poisonous gases. And direct contact with volcanologists for up-to-date predictions on volcanic activity and risks. Inherently, there is always a certain degree of uncertainty when visiting an active volcano, but because of the nature of this particular eruption, the risks were minimal. Seeing as the primary caldera was situated in a depression, surrounded by mountains, which made viewing safe. This allowed literally thousands of people to visit the volcano early on. (2) As conditions at the eruption site have changed, this might prohibit the ease of viewing. If you do decide to visit the eruption site in the future yourself, we advise you to follow updates and advice on how to prepare yourself published through ruv.is and vedur.is.

This isn’t the first time Icelanders haven’t been afraid of eruption they have healthy respect for it and also they aren’t trying to make sense of it they are delighting in it Oh how American you are 😆 you are projecting your own culture onto Iceland 😁 but I’m glad you learn new way of love

Not quite like this but as a kid living in Sicily, Mount Etna erupted pretty good and my parents drove us up the mountain close enough to check out the lava flowing. That was amazing.

It expresses something that is deep within our being, a primal sense that is both fear and awe and belonging. In ages long past it was the tribe, it was the communal sharing of the experience of living one with another. For this brief moment it is happening again in the wilds of Iceland.

Volcanoes can be such an amazing show in their beauty but also in their awfulness...When people here are enjoying the spectacle, the people of St Vincent in the Caribbean, where the volcano "La Soufriere' has exploded, are hoping to save their lives. Interesting perspective. I've been trying to figure out why I am so obsessed with this volcano -- I have never been so interested in this stuff before. And there are so many people "following" it on RU-vid it is definitely a collective experience, however 'remotely'. For me, it feels like a release - geologically of course but also with the people. We are all connected, and we are all connected with the Earth. It's a collective geo-political catharsis ! I hope it is a healing. And the fact that it is happening in an area where no one can get hurt is very special. A safe space where Earth can release her tensions, and the people can participate in helping her simply by watching.

I guess its just what people want and need to see, how people can still unite and be human in a world that is kept hostage by a virus. Look at all those people happy, free and unmasked enjoying our true purpose to be connected. If they followed the rules, it wasnt allowed to be here with so many people at same time, but they didnt because they couldnt sell it anyway to restrict the amount of people going here in the first place. And guess what? Nothing bad came from it, just happy faces. I cant help but just to see it that way. If this was in US or elsewhere in Europe, this wouldnt have happened. This is Iceland and we got a message. Celebrate life and respect mother Earth. :)

Would’ve loved to be there. Fully impressed with forces of nature. Now, am I correct in my belief that volcanic activity is what the basis of icelands land mass is made of. Is this true for the Hawaiian islands as well? If so what does this all look like below the surface of the sea? Miles and miles of volcanic lava solidified into a mountain that finally pokes up from the sea surface? And continues to grow large enough for humans to live upon? Just crazy in my mind. Like the core of the earth pushing through a pinhole to the surface like a pimple on the face of earth itself.

2:37 I've never known anyone who lived in any sort of fear of an eruption. Usually when we hear there is one imminent.. we get excited. and then get disappointed when they would say eruption will not happen. ....basically this whole line he says there is not true for Icelanders. This force of nature is a pert of our identity as a nation, and the fact we've embraced it over the years is something that makes us proud to be Icelandic.

@AnnaMaria-zm8cv
@AnnaMaria-zm8cv 3 года назад
Says the one who hasnt been there and is probably fearmongered by others who have not been here either... Yes there are people with young children, plenty of them even. But do you think they expose them to real danger intentionally? More than letting your kid go walk to school first time alone? Of course not, they stay off wind with them and on safe distance. Kids KNOW how close they can get, its only adults that would cross the limits. Kids still have the fear of fire and heat and they exactly know how far they can go. Taking them here, will mentally make them stronger. They learn and thats the reason why some parents take them to the eruption. Kids in Iceland are way more mature than in many other countries because they arent threaten as snowflakes, they are exposed to danger from young age on, in country like Iceland, they have to. With all the safety advises in mind. I however talk about kids age 5 and up. Younger than that, shouldnt be here due to risk of being poisoned, it goes much faster in small kids and they die before you as adult start to feel the first signs. Luckily there are people constantly measuring gas pollution and push people to safe levels if needed. This eruption is, if you have common sense in place, a rather safe place to be.

Excellent short! Truly loved your narrative about connecting in a primal way. I thought the same at the beginning of the film. I lived in Oregon when Mt St. Helens erupted, but as a pyroclastic flow that decimated land, trees, bridges and took lives for miles sadly. Yet, there was a great reminder of how nature is in control. Then, there was also the experience of seeing Crater Lake and the lava fields there...spectacular country. Thank you for so kindly sharing this. I'll be investigating more of your films, you've got the perfect mix of photography and narrative.

Another thing I've been wondering and hoping someone who's been there can tell me about is if thousands of people are visiting this remote site every day, how are trash & human waste being handled? Are the visitors trashing the landscape? Or do thousands of visitors manage to all collectively act as good citizens by packing out everything they brought in, human waste and all?

Such a good question actually... to be honest, I must say that the level of respect that everyone at the volcano is impressive. Leave no trace principles are followed as far as I have seen and I've been to the location a lot. There's the occasional piece of a wrapper on the ground or maybe a can, but I'm expecting these simply fell out of people's bags by accident. No one to my view is leaving anything on-site or trashing it. I've seen people picking up any little pieces of stray trash if there even is any. Despite there being thousands and thousands of people... it's incredibly clean. People also look out for each other also. It's really refreshing to see this actually.

You cant compare a regular volcano eruption with a fissure eruption. Fissure eruptions are typically viewer friendly as long as there is no water or ice involved because it is the explosions that make an eruption dangerous, and that needs ultra high pressure or water/ice. The only risk here is gasforming and possible eruption of mt Keilir itself which sits along this fissure up north, which has a 'plug' in its crater that might explode. Dont think that is gonna be likely as pressure goes down because of the current vents. This gatherings would never happen if Hekla or Katla erupt, people arent stupid. Luckily most eruptions here are fissure eruptions. Its just another thing though that they produce huge amounts of lava as they typically last for months or years, centuries even.

I felt very peaceful there, this volcano as of yet isnt there to do harm as long as you respects its presence there, it wants us to reconnect with mother Earth. I also thought fear would strike me, but not for a second, despite the vicious splatting of the craters, the ultrasone tremor the volcanos produce, the heat and the smell... Fear was totally absent, while I am really very connected with my gutfeeling, yet of course I kept distance with the help of the heat this event produces. And the smell? I mostly lingered on the smell of the grass and herbs heating up before the lava came for them, a very balmy sweet smell. And the smoke smells like campfire. I didnt smell sulphur as I couldnt smell the fume coming from the craters (and I wouldnt want to either). Experiencing this cant really be described by looking at videos or photos, its very unreal to witness it with own eyes but you need the whole scene of smell, sound, sight, senses etc to feel it full power. This RU-vid however does it very very well.

People come to Hawaii to see the lava flow but they will let people get that never get that close because its dangerous and liabilities what not....but you can't even see the lava flow from the volcano unless you are in a helicopter or at sea. But this is just beautiful 😍

Going to Germany back in 1970 I had a twenty hour lay over in Iceland. Weird I didn't see many trees where I was. It was at the time of cold weather and snow in Germany. 🙏🇺🇸

The way it has been documented is so enriching and let's you connect with instantly, as if you are there with one of them and experiencing a once in life time moment. A moment where you see earth grow. And most importantly, how people have expressed their experience and connection with this Volcano is something to remember forever. ❤️
