We are back at the eruption site. Expedition no. 39 is ongoing. Sep 12., 2021. As you know, last night volcano came back to life, to the surprise of many. It had been inactive for a week, the longest pause since March. Lava is moving to Geldingadalur through a cracked north western wall of the crater.

You have made this event one that we will not forget - for several reasons - the ability you have to explain to the "ordinary" amongst us is much appreciated....keep your accent...this is the most original and unique way of reporting - you and your Nina are precious even though we have never met, and probably won't. I am 80 years old and quite content to viewing that volcano from my comfortable desk chair!!!

the fact that this system has the power to spew lava from the crater and from fountains all around is basicly the only confirmation that this isnt gonna end soon at all
@shooster5884
@shooster5884 2 года назад
,With the lava though also now flowing into the crater itself, it will form a growing lid and fill the crater up so the lava will have to continue finding these other ways out in the lava field. I wonder if the pressure became too much would an explosion occur to form a new volcano beside the old one? That could hurl red hot rocks or lava all over the place.. maybe even the people there.
@johnzuijdveld9585
@johnzuijdveld9585 2 года назад
@@shooster5884 No because this is not that kind of volcano! The Earth here is separating and so if one outflow gets blocked the pressure will open up new cracks in the crust and lava will flow from there. We already saw 8 fissures in this small area to date, they have since closed but that does NOT stop them or any new points in the landscape from opening up, as long as there are tremors the crust can open anywhere in this sq. mile. but remember this is only part of a much larger volcanic system and volcanic activity could start even 100 kl.+ away, even in the ocean! So stop thinking this is anything like Yellowstone or Krakatoa, they don't even 'quack' the same! 🤔

The Green Iceland Vid channel has drone footage from the very early part of this reawakening. Lava is actually pumping into the old crater from the inside of the same big crack that's pumping lava out into that NW area with the lava lake. It's fascinating to see from above. The total amount of lava leaving the field seems larger than what flows out at the crater. I'd guess there is a longer crack reaching out under the lava field with additional outlets where lava bubbles in as we see on your video. Thanks for your and Nina's effort.

I suspect there are 3 new vents actually. It would be against the laws of hydrodynamics and thermodynamics for the lava to burst to such heights having only one source from the crack in the wall.

Your comment makes me suspect that you have no credentials to speak off on the laws of hydrodynamics and thermodynamics - so best to keep those suspicions to yourself.
@3rsullivan
@3rsullivan 2 года назад
@@velianlodestone1249 Actually what Adrian said makes sense. There could be micro vents under those geysers that are coming out of the lake field. Its not likely gases are traveling through the tubes and making a 90 degree turn vertical to push lava to those heights. You could have been nicer and less critical too. It goes a long way.
@chadatom
@chadatom 2 года назад
Not if additional pressure is coming from pooled water in cracks in the old, deep lava, that is being turned to steam. Don't think we can prove this either way. There have been little 'lava fountains' in the flow before well away from any active vent.
@essr4580
@essr4580 2 года назад
It's likely this is gas escaping from the pooled lava as it cools, lava can hold alot more dissolved gasses at higher temps

They are definitely vents under the lava flow. You don't get that much outgassing out of flowing lava from elsewhere. The magma has decided those vents offer less resistance to depressurising the magma chamber than trying to force up through the main vent. Same thing happens with Hawaiian rift eruptions- the active vents move downstream as the eruption contines over time.

The area there is to hot for diamonds. Diamonds are brought up in eruptions where the materials come out much faster as well. Diamonds are brought up in Kimberlite pipes, and most diamonds have been brought up in cratons. Cratons are the ancient cores of continents. Kimberlite pipes that form in cratons usually have diamonds, those in younger areas, or here in Iceland don't have.

This is really fascinating GutnTog, what a fantastic documentary series! With the main crater also back to being full of liquid lava, and the fact that we also see new fissures open across the valley, this suggests the pressure required to create a new path to the surface is 'minimal' here. Since the new fissures appeared first (initial pressure release point was not via the crater) we should expect more fissures if activity pauses for significant length of time and then starts up again - the longer the greater the chance. The pressure looks equalised at the moment - the flow rates from main crater and those new fissures can clearly be much higher than we see here, and I would expect the main crater to take over if the pressure was to built up further...to a point! Stay safe, as always.
