A railroad spur extends inside the plant. Volkswagen Beetles head towards a VW branded transport ship. VW's Volkswagenwerk factory exterior (1:05). Cars being built. Cars on the assembly line. Biggest test track in Europe is located at the Volkswagen Factory. A Volkswagen Beetle is crashed into a wall as part of safety tests. DEI Defense Electronics Inc. mainframe computer. The crash of the Volkswagen Beetle is reviewed by engineers (:06-2:18). Engineers look over plans, and at (3:05) are shown working with clay models to design components. High tech, highly automated machines stamp out car parts. Workers look at the doors to a Beetle. Machine tools at work. Precision cutting machines at work. 1 out of every 10 workers at the Volkswagen Factory is an Inspector. Brake components checked on a machine (2:19-4:22). A machine tests parts. The engine has come a long way. One of the most dependable engines ever built comes from the Volkswagen Factory. Pistons installed (5;24). The engine. Rear axle joints placed on (4:23-5:51). Hands put a machine on. All engines are dynamically balanced. Testing engines happens every day. An automatic transmission. The engine is put together by a robot assembly machine. Every automatic transmission is tested and run at full power (5:52-7:35). Big machinery build the small cars. The machines at work. Doors are moved by machines. All the body parts become a body structure in a mechanical merry-go-round type machine. Thousands of welds piece the cars together, welds is better than bolts (7:36-9:13). A worker welds carefully (9:28). Cars on the assembly line. Car bodies are dipped in a special primer. Men buff the cars and make sure they are smooth and angled. Paint is sprayed onto the cars. Every little detail is touched up on the line. Paint on the line (9:14-11:12). Conveyor lines keep things moving in advanced mass production. Car bodies hang on the line. Car doors are opened, windshield wipers are tested, steering wheels turned, locks are opened and cars are sprayed with water. All of these tests are to make sure the cars are ready to go. Microbus is tested in a modern wind tunnel to simulate different climates from extreme cold to extreme heat. The pipes of the refrigeration unit (11:13-13:14). Volkswagen Van is driven. It is driven at a high rate of speed on real roads and test roads. Computers are used in research and development. A crash test dummy is shown on an acceleration sled, designed to test seat belts or similar restraints. All pieces of the car are collision or impact tested, and tested for durability. Exhaust analysis equipment. Gauges check for exhaust emissions. Development makes a model car. A man stands next to a small model of a Fastback coupe (13:15-15:56). Sketches and models of new cars in development. Prototypes and concept cars that didn't make the cut. Volkswagen cars tested on the test track at high speeds, POV as you pass multiple cars on the track (15:57-17:20). No end credits .

Today you can set your watch to the moment, your new car will fail. I just watched 4 (20,000hr) led bulbs in my kitchen all fail within one week of each other. We haven't gotten better at building, we just got better at engineering failure at the most profitable time. It's called built in obsolescence. I swear the only way VW can sell cars in the states anymore is the annual sign and drive event. Ever notice new VW buyers are usually financially challenged? Then, find that same owner 3years later, the car is falling apart and they still owe money on it. Then the cycle repeats. These videos provide an excellent view into the way things were once upon a time. Sure, today's vehicles are safer, run longer, pollute less and are more economical. But are you really accomplishing anything when you trade in your car every few years? Compare that to the guy that bought a new beetle, drove it 5years, passed it to their teenager which drove it through high school and off to college and eventually sold it off when they needed a dodge minivan in the 80's. What have we really accomplished? Just something to think about next time the power goes out. ;-)

Couple of drawbacks to The Bug. First, at least back in my day, the heaters didn't work worth a damn. My brother owned one as two friends and they all had problems with the heaters. Second, they sucked when it came to doing donuts, a lesson my brother learned the hard way. That top heavy design just wasn't built for THAT particular type of double-dog-dare maneuver. I was never a big fan of the Beetle but I thought the Karmann Ghia was awesome when I was a kid. And the Microbus was the ultimate hippie-mobile.

@@Nighthawke70 from Nygel Miller I'm glad to hear that the aftermarket took care of the heating. I assume you are writing from America? My friend had a later Beetle, after KARMANN-GHIAS were out of production. That Beetle had a blower to push out hot air from the heater, and that WAS most effective!

You had to keep the whole cooling system in order if you wanted heat to be good adding a extra blower fixed the in town lack of heat plus there were a lot of ducts that had to be checked each fall along with those cables that went to the back to open the exchangers the channels along the sides of the body had to be tight and rust free too the bus was never as warm as the bug I put a gasoline fired south bend heater in mine it was so hot you had to open the window in the middle of winter !

It is a late ‘52 which makes it a “zwitter” beetle ,that means in German “ neither male nor female “ . Yes in the VW world and club it is a hermaphrodite bug , being it has a different dashboard than the early beetles ,it has parts like chrome around the split windows that the early ones didn’t have . It has ‘53 parts on it . They were only made from oct 52 to march 53 . They then went to the oval window till ‘58.

@@tiger7199 I had a 71 bus I bought used and the heater wasn't effective. While under the vehicle doing some other maintenance (it was 15 years old by this time) I noticed some issues with the heating ducts and cables. I took this apart and found that A) the heater control cables weren't adjusted properly and the heat was only barely on in the hottest position B) the heater duct pipe running to the front had rusted and someone had made a replacement by putting an adapter on a plastic pipe dropping the size from 3 or 4 inches (I don't remember the exact size) down to about 1 1/2 inches which was strangling the airflow and C) before I put a full size pipe in place I tested the system with a shop vac; it was clogged. I switched the vac to suck and a huge hunk of fibers and nuts came out, a huge mouse nest. This crap kept coming out for some time but I got it cleared out. When I put it all together properly it was very different. If you had any papers laying on the dash with the defroster on it would blow them off. Lots of warm air for the feet in front and in the 3rd seat, the middle seat had to wait. Due to the size of the bus it still took a while to warm up but I remember one trip we took when it was about 18 degrees F and the interior reached 70 degrees F in about 20 minutes. Not great but considerably better than the reputation they had. The Ebenspracher gas furnace they offered scared me a bit, I saw quite a few busses with them burnt up in the junkyards. To be fair I noticed jumpers on safety switches on couple of them, obviously on day the owner went to use it and the safety had shut it down and they found that bypassing the safety would let it operate in an unsafe condition. I also had a waterboxer Vanagon, the heat would run you out on that thing. Guess they got tired of the complaints.

There isn't enough electricity in the world for everyone to have an electric car, and the infrastructure of the gasoline/diesel/ethanol fueled vehicle is well established, so don't expect it to go away any time soon. When electric (or ???) cars have the same support and service as gasoline vehicles, then the fuel burners will be put out to pasture. One reason gas remains is that it is easy. One quick pit stop, and the automobile is ready to go, and your only limit is how much fuel you can carry, which is not true for a current battery powered vehicle, which takes time to charge. 💙 T.E.N.

At 14:39 lots of hubris about VW exhaust analysis. The 2015 emissions scandal made a mockery of that. Not so proud now are you VW.?

That diesel will hop with a computer "tune up" if you don't care about an emissions sticker. 💙 T.E.N.

There are no cars on this planet that you could buy in the 50’s or ‘60 for about $1700 and now today in great condition are worth about $50,000 or even more . You can’t say that for any other car . I own two , so I know . Better than Money in the bank and I’m glad I invested ! Oh , but they are not for sale for any amount !
