You want a vehicle that can do 99% of everything that you think you need it to do? I have the perfect vehicle for you. It's called a "wagon", and it utilizes plenty of cargo room mixed with great driving dynamics and solid styling.
Oh you don't like that idea? YOU'RE WRONG!
Say hello to the Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen, and say hello to a vehicle that will handle nearly all of your daily needs. It has loads of cargo space, returns tremendous fuel economy with the TDI motor, and is available rather nicely equipped for right around $30,000.
Stop buying crossovers. Start buying wagons... this one is a good one to start with.

I just picked up a used 2015, and it is second only to our beloved 2001 Passat wagon. Delightful car.

Thanks for the wagon advocacy. Really have been bummed that most wagons have disappeared from the market and I haven't been impressed by the crossovers I've tested so far. Seriously considering this for my next car.

Like he said. He is one of few people on the planet that dislikes the auto tranny. It is smooth as glass and I love it. I get 52 mpg on the hwy and 38 in the city.

I've got a 2016 GSW LE with the 1.8TSI after selling back my 2012 TDI. Absolutely blown away with how good a car my 2016 is and the tuneability is insane. You can get the 1.8TSI to over 240whp and 280wtq with the stock turbo and well over 300whp and 340wtq if you slap a GTI turbo onto it. Top that with nearly all GTI suspension parts fitting directly onto a Sportwagen and you can build yourself a pretty unique car!

I've got the 2013 sportwagen tdi...awesome car. as long as you're not planning on racing it, or doing a ton of canyon driving, it can not be beat for the price. I've got mine lowered on some KW coilovers, sticky rubber, etc. and its even fun for the windy stuff !

Torrey B Yeah tons of aftermarket support, so you could always tune it up to make it more to your liking. Sounds like your wagon is on the right path for sure. - JG

Yea, I don't get why Americans don't like wagons. My second favorite car that I've owned was my '05 Passat 1.8T wagon. Useful as hell and back then (unlike now) they could be fully kitted up with leather and all that. It was the perfect dog and Costco run hauler, plus it was fun to drive and comfortable. When I was a kid in high school in the 80's, I had a root beer brown (with faux wood paneling) Pinto shooting brake. Can I call it that? :)

Love my 2013 Sportwagen... Now that the warranty is up, I will lower the suspension, do an EGR/DPF delete and a tune, and ride the wheels off of my grocery getter.. And the thing killed it this winter in New England with a nice set of blizzaks. You don't need an SUV, people...with that said, I did have to replace the sunroof frame, both headlights, and the a/c before I left warranty.. Get your shit together, VW...

Hell yes. I have a MK6 and best car I've ever had. GTI suspension, upgrade brakes and Eagle F1 tires on 18" Goal wheels. It's a blast to drive. Only complaint is laggy shifts of Tipronic tranny. Wish VW would offer wagon w/ the 2.0T and manual 6 or DSG. But at least the old 2.5L is considered pretty bullet proof. I think wagons look cool. I don't get the crossover appeal. I had my time w/ SUV's and got tired of poor driving dynamics and crappy fuel economy.

So what are your opinions now that the TDI isn't all its cracked up to be? Thoughts on the TSI?
@TheHooniverse
@TheHooniverse 8 лет назад
+Rodrigo Jorge Gutierrez It's a massive shame. The engines are great, but the excessive pollution is a large hit against them. I hope this doesn't kill diesel in this country... The TSI version of the SportWagen is still incredibly useful, comfortable, and good looking. It's still a good buy. -JG
@jbirzer
@jbirzer 8 лет назад
+Rodrigo Jorge Gutierrez As a long time TDI driver who is looking to replace it, this car still makes a strong argument for itself even with the TSI engine. Not many wagons out there, and the gasser engine gets respectable mileage.
@rodrigogutierrez9102
@rodrigogutierrez9102 8 лет назад
+Jason Birzer Thanks for the opinion. I am looking closely at the new Limited Edition of the TSI. I will be comparing it to the Honda HRV, Subaru Impreza, Maza 3 hatch, and maybe small SUVs. I have a family of 4 and a dog (lab), so need some trunk space. Advice?
@jbirzer
@jbirzer 8 лет назад
Rodrigo Jorge Gutierrez My wife has a 09 Mazda 3 and it is a very nice car. Just as a note, all of those have less storage space in the back than the Sportswagen. 4 and a lab might be a little cramped.

Ähm. "Wagen" in german is just another word for "car". So it is called the "Golf Sport Car". The german Word for "Wagon" is "Kombi". In Germany the car is called the "Golf Variant".

Alternative: Volvo V60 Premier, lay off the options and with discounts it's low 30's. Bigger, more solid, better dealer network. And a great 8 speed transmission and powerful 4 cylinder turbo. 0-60 in 6 seconds.

Fast forward to 2019, and VW has killed off the Golf Sportwagen. I am hoarding wagons -- keeping the 2001 Passat as long as I can, plus the 2016 Golf, bought last year.

@calgary2800 4 года назад
No, VW in USA still sells the sportwagen in Golf Trim for 2020. I have a 12 Jetta Wagen with the 2.5 5 cyl I wish I had the Tdi but they discounted the 2.5 so much I could not say no.
@clothestravel
@clothestravel 3 года назад
@@calgary2800 no, 2019 was the last model year, although there were probably several new 2019s on dealer lots well into 2020.

If you want to check on really great looking wagons you have to check the Mercedes CLS 63 s AMG or the Audi RS6 European version.

Nice review Glucker - nice to see diesels becoming more popular in the US. My grandparents have the previous gen version. The gearbox seems pretty responsive and I've not noticed any lag when driving it (perhaps euro DSGs are different?). The rear legroom is terrible though, I struggle to sit behind myself at 6ft1. Here's my shitty review from when I was 15 (shameless plug): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-klgJy0qJ6kE.html

"One year to 1,000 years." VW may hate that part, but, if you've ever owned a VW from the 21st Century, it's a major concern. One year is even pushing it. I'd love to give this car a try, but my experience is that a VW will spend more time in the shop than with me, and frequently for the same thing, over and over again. It was a 2002 Golf and a Passat of similar age. Electrical and fluid leaks were the problems. I'm 30 years past owning a pair of Dodges, and still, I won't give them any more of my money after the junk that those cars turned out to be. VW has earned a similar fate in my world. (One man's opinion through experience.)

Technically, DSG sucks, I’ve had great luck with my ‘07 Rabbit (MK V Golf) 2 door MTX I plan on getting a used TDI SportWagen in manual, I loathe automatics, and the DSG is nothing more than an over complicated automatic with a gimmicky “manual” mode No foot operated clutch pedal? It’s not a manual.
