Today we are testing to see if our 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 First Edition has suffered from battery degradation after only 32,000 miles. We encountered some foreshadowing while we were charging up to start the test when the Electrify America charger didn't deliver as many kWh as we would have thought it should. Next we will do a full 0-100% DC Charge to better analyze how much power the battery accepts.

I charge at that charger and I never see you!! Hope to bump into you one day and meet you in person. Can’t believe you got that much of a range 248miles, I’m getting 280 or 290miles of range at 100%. But I only have 21,000 miles on mine not sure if the overall miles of the car has to do with it. Awesome video tho, cuz you took the car all the way to 0% I’ve only have taken down to 6% didn’t know the ID4 had that xtra juice at 0%.

I appreciate the test at 75 mph. It’s more realistic than 70 for testing roadtrip efficiency. We have a ‘21 Pro S with 12k miles and are about to head to Colorado from Indiana with a hitch cargo rack. I hope to document the data and post a video at the end of June. Thanks for the great content, Joe!

I live is Des Moines and recently been to Chicago with my new 2022 AWD PRO, and I have charged it on the same EA station you are showing in this video 😊. As it was my first time I wanted to give a try on the range, so I charged it to 100% and started driving 75 mph for 3 hrs straight with AC and music on as I would have done in a gas car, and by the time it’s at 11% I was about to be cover 225 miles, so I think the battery pack is new which made it to an acceptable range as I got in my case( from DSM to Chicago), however it will be interesting to see how does it do after an year

New viewer here. Did you keep track of the total amount of kWh you have DC fast charged your ID4? Since you have free fast charging and so much miles racked up in a year or two I think that might have played a role?
@EVMotoring
@EVMotoring 2 года назад
Since a lot were complimentary charges, they don’t register on my EA account, however all of my road trips have all of the data as well as I do roughly 2 dc charges per month of about 40 kWh each. My EA account states 1,500 kWh but the real number is much higher

Great range test, and driving it down to 0% battery. Nice... Question... why don't you range test at 70mph like many other RU-vidrs do (eg, Out of Spec Motoring and Inside EVs)? That why it's a standard range test for everyone? Also, in my area (Pacific NW), speed limit is still 60mph.. I'd have to really get out of the city quite a bit before the limit even goes to 70mph.
@EVMotoring
@EVMotoring 2 года назад
My thoughts were that most test at 70 but anyone who’s road-tripping across the country will encounter 75+ most of their drive and aerodynamics really take effect as the speed rises

Looks like you pulled 73kW from the battery. You need to compare that to what you pulled out of your original drive (looks like close to 75kW). Driving slower at 50mph would limit heat loss. If your original useable pack size was 75kW you're looking at roughly 3% degradation. 3% is about normal and actually pretty good for your mileage.
@EVMotoring

Nice video! I’m curious how big the buffer is on the ID.4 after 0%. That would be a cool video if you could bring something else to charge the car back up so you can make it to a charger after but i really wanna know if it has more than a 10 mile buffer or will it just shut off after 5 miles or what will happen.
@EVMotoring
@EVMotoring 2 года назад
Typically you would not want to use all of that buffer as it can damage the battery
@_cjmccullough
@_cjmccullough 2 года назад
@@EVMotoring i know most people don’t but i want to know what it is so you know what you have in an emergency. Like the Tesla model 3 has 22+ miles after 0% of buffer when traveling 55 mph. And a lot of cars have at least 10 miles. Wondering what the ID.4’s is.

Did you change your tires since the first test? Also, could you please measure the difference in height between the ground and the front driver's seat pad. I currently drive a KIA Soul and both my wife and I like the seat height. Thanks for another informative video.

Do you keep your tire pressure at 42 PSI? The European tire pressure sticker allows for a change in tire pressure from anywhere between 38 PSI and 42 PSI depending upon number of passengers and weight of items in the hatch. The U.S. sticker has a blanket recommendation of 42 PSI period. Maybe this latter trip was a winder day vs last year's test. Have you been back to VW for your intermittent software issues? I have the Pro S Gradient version of your FE and occasionally get the yellow error for the Driver Assist sensors not working. This always clears itself when walking away after locking the car and coming back about 20 minutes latter or so. Most ID 4 owners are waiting for the elusive 3.0 (3.1) software update to see if the intermittent warnings of different types disappear. Supposedly the 3.0 software update will need to be dealer performed as there is a rumored 12V battery swap and and Control Module change out that is supposed to take place possibly in the July / September 2022 time frame.
@EVMotoring
@EVMotoring 2 года назад
I had the tires set to 44. The out and back nature should do it’s best to reduce the light winds affect. I also frequently have the driver assist warning and I remedy it the same way. I have heard similar rumors about this update. The amount of delays with the update reinforces the need to buy a car as it is rather than expecting updates to enhance features.

When I picked up my AWD Pro S in April, the dealership said they were expecting the hardware and software upgrades some time this summer (maybe later). You'd get the 12v battery and module upgrade plus v2.4 (I believe). This would be done in order of when you bought the ID.4. After that happens, you can get v3.x update via OTA when it's released.
@Joe3545u
@Joe3545u 2 года назад
From what I’ve been seeing, the 2.4 release was for Europe last fall although the update there has been slow. North America should go directly to 3.1 by late summer or early fall. As far as tire pressure is concerned, 38 to 40 PSI should provide a softer ride where as 42 to 44 is stiffer with better range. Many are reporting earlier than expected rear tire wear with rear wheel drive due to torque.

The test is biased, therefore no conclusion can be taken. The bias is due to the driver not being blind to the performance parameters. Knowing which were the performance parameters in the first test and having access to the present parameters could affect the driver' behaviour towards the achievement of a positive outcome. The only conclusion that can be trusted is the actual battery capacity that was roughly estimated at the end of the recharge.
