"Doesn't [Daichi] look like a corpse here?" (c) Furudate, the author of Haikyuu, *cheerfully* Afaik, it's not as common in Japan for parents to come and watch their kids play. Everyone's busy working, and it's often quite difficult to take days off, so Takeru's family's definitely more of an exception.
@YoonbeenPark

That’s definitely a factor, but I bet Japanese attendance is lower than NA’s even on weekends. I imagine social anxiety is just higher in Japan in general (between parents).

I've heard stories of how Japanese workplaces would give people vacation days or say their work days end at a reasonable hour, but those wouldn't really be respected because as soon as you don't stay in late or take that vacation, your coworkers would look down on you. I've also heard newer companies are typically not as bad about that kind of stuff and I've never worked there so I don't know if it's been overblown as it was passed along the internet, though

Hi,I am very excited to watch your video! I am Japanese and raising three kids in Japan,eldest daughter is a fist grade in high school. We are also going to school matches to cheer up our kids! But almost Japanese parents are so busy with work on weekdays,and compared to other countries it’s pretty difficult to get holidays (but depend on the job). So if I could go to the match,it’s on weekend or like very big match is kind of final game.

I love how Daichi's role is built up in the last couple of episodes to show just how much of a cornerstone he is, only to then be yanked out from under our feet, leaving us feeling wrong-footed. We've had Kageyama and Hinata swapped out, and we've managed alright, but this is our first time without our captain. It also gives us a glimpse of how the team will have to manage next year once he graduates -- though by that time, our first years will hopefully have matured a decent amount. On another note, it's really interesting hearing Adam describe Wakunan's team (35:10) and then thinking about what makes them different from the two teams Coach Ukai points out (20:36) : Nekoma and Seijoh(Aoba Johsai). Or rather, thinking "what does Nekoma have that gives them an edge over Wakunan? What makes them scarier than this team we're facing here in the quarterfinals?" "What makes Seijoh -- another well-balanced team -- more formidable?" If these are all rational teams who are good at receiving and handling our attacks, what sets them apart? Wakunan is a balanced team that makes intelligent plays, doesn't get rattled, and has good receiving - but as we hear from Daichi, they would need an iron wall (of Date Tech) to stop our "kingly ace." So then you think about Nekoma with the stand-out middle blocker Kuroo and a libero (Yaku) even Nishinoya acknowledges. Wakunan has "pineapple head," and can run multiple people for an attack, but Nekoma has new blood Lev to add attack power and blocking (if he manages to get more experience under his belt and can get his gangly limbs under control). Wakunan has a captain (Takeru) who is excellent at managing the condition of his team, and is good at using angles to work blocks. So then you think of Seijoh with their captain (Oikawa) who similarly pays very close attention to his teammates' conditions and whose personal motto is to draw out everyone's 100%. Wakunan's captain fights mid-air battles at the net; Seijoh's fights with service aces and setting. Captains aside, Seijoh's attack power and blocking are quite good. They also seem to have a new member "Mad Dog," but at this point, we don't know what effect that has on the team. Going into the next episode, it makes one wonder what else Wakunan will show us now that Karasuno is in a bit of a bind. Will we see more types of attacks? Will they target holes in the defense now that Daichi isn't there to cover our weak points? Will we get more of a focus on some of Wakunan's other spikers? Things to look forward to!

5:51 I honestly can't believe it but this sentiment is very common in the fandom. I, however, and many other people heavily disagree with it. There's a lot of nuances here that seem to be always missed... 1) Coach Anabara is a VERY NEW coach to an already established team. He doesn't have the rapport with the boys the same way as Hana does who has been stuck with them for at least 2 years. In Japan, seniority in age might be a big social normity, but familiarity is more respected by a team that is full of free-spirited individuals, hence why it was smart of Coach Anabara to not say anything as intimate as what Hana said, because it might do more harm to the team if it came from him. 2) Remember that Coach Anabara's skill as a coach never gets the spotligjt because IT IS NOT IMPORTANT TO THE STORYLINE. Haikyuu's story cohesion banks on the fact that it we're only seeing highlight reels of the matches instead of the full gameplay (Adam always seem to miss this fact whenever he comments about the scores not making sense :P). This is why we only ever see what's being said during timeouts when and only when it enriches the plot. 3) This is encroaching spoiler territory so I'll keep it either surface-level or to the things we've already been shown. There's actually a good number of evidence that Coach Anabara is a very good volleyball coach. First off, Johzenji only became regarded as a powerhouse school in a stacked region (Miyagi, just in this generation alone, has a lot of high level teams that can compete at a national level besides Shiratorizawa) when Coach Anabara was recruited to the team, and he technically only has a few months worth of experience difference with his own team compared to Coach Ukai. Johzenji is a very rowdy, undisciplined team, but he easily turned that into an advantage by taking a page out of beach volleyball (2v2 practice matches in indoor volleyball is quite the unorthodox method at the high school level), and after doing so, has made a previously unknown team into a dark horse contender in such a short time. Further in the story is what I'd say is definitive proof of his skill as a coach but this is already within spoiler territory for Adam so I won't expound on it. 4) From what I can remember from the manga, he actually does coach things but it is extremely hard to keep Johzenji in line even when he's trying hard to calm them down while trying not to kill their hype. They were very stubborn, thinking they got far in the Interhigh just from partying around and only really realized their problem after playing against Karasuno and Hana telling them off more than once. There is no lack of trying from Coach Anabara, he just doesn't have the complete tools yet to deal with this team, as you would notice that the boys didn't really do any significant reaction when Coach Anabara walked out after the post-match meeting (this is usually the cue to start packing their things out).

So not being at this part in the manga and this being the first time we really see this school I have the following opinion. Your first and third point contradict each other. (I understand you are saying this is a partial spoiler which means you are referring to things that are to come.) but in one breathe you say he hasn’t been part of the team a long time so he hasn’t developed the relationships. In your 3rd point you are talking about how he has turned the team around based on his coaching. Both things cannot be true. He has either had enough time to implement his systems and such should know is his team or he hasn’t had time to know the team and any success should be attributed to the previous coach. As for my comment about Hana being a coach that really had nothing to do with the head coaches skill. It was an observation on how well she was able to focus and point the team in the right direction. This is a huge part of coaching. It was meant only to be a compliment to how she handled the situation.
@Revoltine
@Revoltine 10 дней назад
@@adamschulz9475There's a way to consolidate the "contradiction" without mentioning any spoilers, but this also means mentioning something that is in the manga but is very unlikely to be mentioned in the anime as it was just a side note. Coach Anabara is said to be an innovative coach and his style of coaching jives well with a team like Johzenji. There's no actual proof for this but realistically speaking, they agree to it because it, at the very least, fits their idea of a "fun" practice. They will inadvertently level up their volleyball skills regardless of their reason for partaking. In this front, they are at least being respectful and follow his orders on how to up their game since they're still quite passionate about the sport and we've witnessed that they are quite receptive with the idea of improving. Unfortunately, this courtesy does not obviously extend to when they are in an official match. To establish the social dynamic between the whole team, we have to look at how it's structured first, and try to contextualize it with the nuances of japanese societal norms. Johzenji is composed of starter players who are all 2nd years (we only ever see these guys play), Coach Anabara (he occupies a tenured position as he is the official coach unlike Ukai), and two managers, 3rd year Hana and 1st year Runa (the same situation as Shimizu and Yachi). While Coach Anabara is the oldest, he's actually only a recent addition to the staff as already mentioned before. He joined a year before the events of the story and within that short time, Johzenji became an Interhigh semifinalist despite being a previously unknown team. The next one would be Hana who has been the manager since she was a first year, meaning she actually holds seniority over anyone in the team since the 3rd year players left. And then we have the players, with the known youngest being poor Runa who is left to deal with the players' immature butts after this season. So, now that we have that out of the way, we can have an easier time picking out why Hana dealt with that situation instead of Coach Anabara. We first go back to the importance of seniority to japanese society and then spinning it to fit the free-spirited players. While Coach Anabara is definitely the oldest and is the person who should be holding the authority, the boys clearly respects Hana more because she's the only third year who stuck with them and they know she has a better handle on how the team runs, especially on a more personal scale. What she said during the timeout cannot be worded in a way Coach Anabara could without him putting his foot down and asserting his position, which he knows isn't going to do any good if it comes from him knowing a free-spirited team doesn't vibe well with the voice of authority. Bottomline is, it worked on them specifically because it came from Hana, and it would only be heard from Coach Anabara if and only if he reached that type of social connection with his players, which he hasn't. To compare, Ukai's very close relationship with Karasuno is actually an exception to the rule, because he isn't their coach in an official capacity and that the boys are very well aware of how much he sacrifices for them when coaching them is not even his job, so the social barrier of "professionalism" is inexistent, while it very likely does for all other teams that we'll meet with the only other exception being Nekoma whose coach-player situation isn't as touched on in the anime as it was presented in the manga.

In terms of family game attendance, I think fewer Japanese families attend children’s games than in NA (relatively). This is of course a generalization and approximation. It will vary by region, sport, age, etc. It might be due to kids being more embarrassed about families attending, it might be due to parents not wanting to burden their kids with expectations of performance, and/or it might be parents being anxious about meeting other parents or school teachers (comparisons of ‘social standing’ may be harsher and more prevalent in East Asia than in NA). I doubt there are solid figures anywhere about this, so I’m curious about what other people think. But this is my impression as a Korean who’s lived in Japan and the US.

17:29 I loved that Ukai, Takeda, Yachi and Kiyoko went in for the cheer as well! Also, Takeru’s family reminds me of some really annoying and obnoxious moms that came to watch our basketball matches. They would yell when they thought something was unfair and were so close to getting into fights with the referees. Obviously, this family wouldn’t go as far, because it’s Japan we are talking about and they don’t seem that annoying, but they sure are loud.

I believe these matches are held on weekdays? so their parents have to go to work and can't come to watch their games. (not too sure tho)

Most school matches are on weekdays, and it's really hard to take a day off if you're not the owner of your own small family business. Most companies have 10 or a little bit more paid days off (depending on how long you've worked for the company), and parents prefer to take the days off around "Golden Week" or O-bon, so they can take 7-10 at days at once for example, so they will have not 10, but 20 days off in a year. There is also a problem with a lot of relocations in Japanese companies, where when you enter a company you can be sent to anywhere around Japan and your family stays in your hometown. I even had a classmate who lived with grandparents, because both of his parents were sent to different cities, when he was around 14, so it's really hard for the parents to return just for the game, as Shinkansen is expensive and you lose at least a full paid day or even two. Plus there is work culture of "not living before the boss" and "working as hard as you can", and if you live to "just watch kid's match" then you can be ostracized. It is much less common now, but it is one of the reasons some of the current youth doesn't want to work in a company on a contract, and prefers an hourly pay ("arubaito").

I used to play soccer, I was a little bit if an agitator as a center back but I probably played a bit too fair of a game. I didn't really foul anyone, I don't remember ever getting a yellow/red card but I did bump into the opposing players cleanly a lot. Also I NEVER dove/embellished, so when I actually got hurt I could see the panic in my teammates. Sucks. But I relate to Daichi here a bit.

Usually when someone got injured or got fouled during a game, you didn't immediately even take it seriously. But I remember EVERYONE running to me the second I could look up instead of just holding my foot in pain. Happened 3 times, once it was close to a brawl as I managed to push one of the opposing team players over the edge and he whammed me with his elbow to the side of my face. Hot headed guy. We won the game as their team ended up taking 2 red cards and multiple yellow ones.

This is an interesting theme to talk about with many layers. The support or not of parents on and off the court. So far, I believe we mainly saw Tsukki, Yachi and Tanaka. Takeru family is a nice spotlight.

Another great reaction! Just a small note, I think when Adam asks a question to Sarah, it may be more productive for Sarah to engage with the question without answering it rather than saying "do you want me to tell you?" since that basically shuts down any discussion on the topic. So for example, Sarah can put herself in Adam's shoes and engage in the speculation, I think that would be cool to see.

Regarding family participation, remember these tournaments are during the day, so taking time off work, which isn’t traditionally a Japanese thing for any recreational activity, just to go watch the preliminary rounds of a prefectural tournament is a bit unheard of.

I’m really curious, did either of you have captains on your past teams that reminded you of Daichi? Do you think there are other ways of leading a volleyball team that have been successful? Thanks!
@adamschulz9475
@adamschulz9475 13 дней назад
I don’t think I ever played with a Daichi. I’ve played with lots of different leaders. I think the most effective leaders are able to set the tone the team takes. They do it in a way that is authentic to them. They are able to keep players accountable. Usually you have a captain but most successful teams have multiple leaders that are able to work together.

Great reaction as always. Team Jozenji is a party team indeed, yet they are still likeable players as it's Haikyuu😆 (a tiny spoiler below) (spoiler) I think that manga readers know how the captain of Jozenji would be proud of this game a several years later🥲💞
