That Kageyama and Hinata both think that "winning is as natural as hunger" is so deep to me, because it's the author explicitly showing us that they possess the mindset of elite level athletes. That's why they feed off each other so well, because every action they do is in service of this broader goal. It's the reason Hinata understands Kageyama's "king" mindset implicitly and unquestioningly trusts him. Just like Kageyama understands Hinata's monster desire to remain on the court and constantly evolve. And why he is one of the very few people who never questions Hinata's height, just his skills - even as RIVALS! They fight a lot, but they never get offended because their values are the same. It also separates them from the other people in Karasuno - everyone is an athlete, but not everyone has the same championship mentality they do. That's why Kageyama supports Hinata when challenging Ushiwaka, which is actually crazy - a 1st year inexperienced athlete challenging a JAPAN NATIONAL PLAYER? Specially in Japan, where respect and hierarchy is paramount. But Hinata and Kageyama don't care, they just see a challenge they have to win. The competition is everything to both of them. No matter what it takes, they want to be the best. This was also a great foray into how the author shows that not EVERYONE is Kageyama or Hinata. Kiyoko's "you just need to have a bit of curiousity" is as valid a path as "the love at first sight route" Hinata had about volleyball. Yachi serves as a proxy for us as an audience, so she gently shows us how a bit of curiousity about a volleyball manga can lead to falling deeper in love with volleyball, or any other passion. I love how all roads are valid, each one is treasured.

The problem with Yachi's mom is the subtext. For me it read "don't do it if you're gonna do it halfheartedly" rather than "if you do it, do it wholeheartedly". The second one is encouraging, the first one assumes you'll fail.
@robertdunne1842
@robertdunne1842 6 месяцев назад
It's interesting because both of those statements technically mean the same thing but the "don't do it if you're not gonna put your all in" one really makes the person look inward at what being passionate means for them while the second one might get the person going easier but doesn't make them wonder how to put their all in as much as the first
@egrassa1480

@doubleasworkshop1692
@doubleasworkshop1692 6 месяцев назад
@@robertdunne1842 That same thing can be done by simply asking, "Are you as passionate about it as much as the others in the team are?" instead of stating it in a manner that makes it feel like you are looking down on someone else. There's a difference between tough love and being inconsiderate
@Iqnacio.
@Iqnacio. 6 месяцев назад
@@egrassa1480 But that's why I think Adam made the best point, what Yachi's mom said was true, but considering what we've seen so far from Yachi this wasn't the time for tough love, she's clearly insecure and anxious and as she said this is the first time she's been "asked for help", this to me seems like the time for the complete opposite, nurturing love, which the second statement in the 1st comment conveys better imo.
@AllUpOns
@AllUpOns 6 месяцев назад
@@Iqnacio. Honestly, I don't think it's tough love, or at least not intentionally so. Yachi's mom says that line while she's half-distracted looking at work stuff, and even when she offers advice about the poster, she starts off with a critique. So it seems fair to say that Yachi's mom is probably just a naturally critical person. That kind of critical eye is a pretty good thing to have in certain office environments, but it's probably something she should learn to turn off with her daughter.

I don't know if it's also an Asian parenting thing but Asian parenting seems always much more strict in the surface and lack of verbal complements to me. Growing up in China, I always recall my mom being the more encouraging one and my dad being the more reserved at compliments and always tell me to do better one. The older generation in general, is not good at complementing and celebrating their kids' growth in a very direct way. The way our parents express their love is usually by action (taking care of us and make sure we always have our favorite food prepared) rather than a more expressive way (giving verbal compliments, hugs and kisses and saying they are proud of us) You can also tell here that even though Yachi's mom is very proud of her declaration in public, she still try to hide her emotions from Yachi. But I feel like the younger parents nowadays are changing and are much better at giving verbal encouragement support to their children.

I'm Indian, and I totally agree. That's why Haikyuu is so much more relatable to me than something like Modern Family. I appreciate both, but I can't relate to the more overt displays of affection in Western style parenting, or the lack of high expectations.
@AllUpOns

It's definitely not specific to Asia. Or at least, it wasn't. It does seem like modern Americans have generally decided that they don't want to be this kind of parent, but older generations of American parents, especially dads, definitely failed pretty spectacularly in the "expressing love" department. I'm not sure if it's because of all the world wars or what.

Tanaka and Nishinoya are right about one thing: Kiyoko does talk a lot more when she has Yachi around! I love that we get to see her express how proud she is of this team. Yachi develops so much as a character during this episode, but it also feels like we're finally really getting to know Kiyoko better. About Hinata's connections with people, I think that, as Sarah says, a lot of it is just innate curiosity; he thinks basically everyone is amazing and cool, and wants to know all about them. But he's also very willing to put himself out there and express how he's feeling, and so other people find him easy to relate to. (Case in point: his conversation with Asahi in season 1, trying to get Asahi to rejoin the team. He has no particular insight into how Asahi is feeling and why, but just expresses why HE loves spiking, and that is familiar enough to strike a chord.)

@Quarkmire

As the "Sun" , it's true Hinata has a natural sunshine disposition - but more importantly, he is also like a gravitational force. He IS overwhelming in how he moves and inspires everyone to act; whether that be Yachi, Asahi, Kenma, Aone, and most importantly Kageyama. He pushes and pulls but he meets everyone where they are. People sense that, and they connect with him.

25:35 Just to clarify, when Hinata said "kindness" (in Japanese "koui") the word itself has two meanings!! The first one means "liking someone" which is more often used in the daily basis. (Which is the reason why Yachi got surprised) But in this case, as Kageyama mentioned it, Hinata was using the word "kindness" for the second meaning!!
@ruinekozuki
@ruinekozuki 6 месяцев назад
Not really? The first kanji for koui/好意 is suki/好/like, but koui isn't usually meant to "like someone". It just means they've done a huge favor/expressed good will to someone. It's just maybe a heavy word(usually to thank a life-saving grace kind of thing) so she got embarrassed. I don't think she misunderstood it for koi/恋い/to love since the pronunciation is different.

I really like the take the way this episode presents parent-child relationships! I think thare's a great deal of complexity to it. Like, Yachi's mom isn't a bad person or really that much of a bad parent even; her parenting style would probably for a certain type of a child (like, idk, Kageyama maybe lol?). The problem is that her and Yachi just have very very different personalities though and I imagine that over the years it kind of slowly added to the point that now Yachi is struggling with the amount of anxiety she probably should see a professional about. Because yeah, being family and loving someone doesn't mean you won't mess up, even when you really DO your best! Because you're human and bonds between humans are complicated and hard to navigate! It's just nice. It's realistic. It's mature

Ya, this is a stand out episode for sure. Yachi I think brings a really fresh perspective in the show in terms of personalities and about being passionate about things compared to nut jobs like Hinata lol. A relatable perspective for many, I'm sure. I love Kiyoko's advice about all you need is a little curiosity to start something. And to see Yachi gain confidence over the course of the story is awesome to see. A big theme of Haikyuu is personal growth and here we see that that doesn't just have to mean in volleyball lol. As the show goes on you come to realize its kind of just about life in general, no matter what shape that takes for you, but for our boys it happens to be volleyball. Haikyuu is also great when it is has side characters in the spotlight for an episode or scene. Makes the story feel bigger. Hinata seeing that poster Yachi made is a lowkey favorite scene of mine.

Most of these kids are good in sports, and of course, there can be a difficult parenting style behind that. But, more often, these kids are just that way. Trying this again since it went and played in popout window and I lost 20 minutes worth of comments so lets see how it goes again Video Start: I love that they do have school being a factor, too many sports anime ignore the academics Love the realism of the buses and the money, also praise Takeda for being in his first year of advising the club and being willing to pony up money to help out. Sucky situation but mad props Noya and Tanaka wanting Yachi to join to make Kiyoko happy is awesome and so in character Nekoma winning thier inter-high is fire Townsperson B is 100% super cute Also yes her being embarrassed because high school guys being high school guys in awesome I love Yachi Hitoka's mom, she is wonderful, she so clearly cares so much but is also very analytical and professional AND I WILL MENTION IT EVERYTIME WE SEE HER She is 100% right, joining a group that cares when you don't is a disrespect to both them and yourself. Having been on both sides I am very comfortable saying this The assistant calling her out to me says they have been working together a long time and he has seen Yachi grow up and is friends/friendly with his boss Her reaction to it very clearly shows how much she loves her daughter and is doing what she can to help her develop. If something this small is gonna make her quit than she never should join (typing this in notepad and not YT comments is being super helpful, gonna keep doing it because then I don't really have to pause and scroll down to type comments. Also with this being the repeat these comments are coming much faster.) Love the conversations between Yachi and Kiyoko, they are wonderful and are a very stable himanizing element for their characters I agree you only need a little curiosity to start a thing, but I would say you should have more than that before committing to something serious Love hearing Ukai ask about their grades, for a lot of athletic focused kids in schools they don;t care what the teachers say but if coach threatens to bench them if they don't get grades upo they will do it Yachi face when Hinta claps his cheeks is wonderful. Yes I know how that sounds but its how I orignally yped it the first time so I am keeping it Love the motivation talk, some people have grand goals, some people just want to win, others want to win just so that they don't lose Tsuki repramanding them on the vocab is amazing "we studied this yesterday" and that is just so perfect and I love it As somebody studying leadership academically the not wanting to lose thing is super cool because of the inherint subconcious fear of social loss being the motivator they aren't reallt aware of is awesome Love that Kageyama and Noya continue to get mentioned as the known good players, the ones with a reputation because not only were they established as that earlier but in games and even just in the animation of how they play its easy to tell that they are more expereinced and gifted Love the Yachi reactions to the first changes I love the string, you're wrong Sarah, headbands are cool Him doing it because Kiyoko told him to is 100% amazing and super cool that they all care what she thinks that much that they listen to her, one because she is their friend and 2 because she is a girl Tanaka is just a buzz cut, they are just ribbing him about it Hinata just screaming is half the show I feel And now its paused and you are mentioning the same things is great The Ukai mini speech is awesome, "go raise some hell" is a great one also because of all the raven/crow analogies The reason they don't move and its just a still frame is less because they don't actually move and more because its simplier and easier to animate and slight reactions and fliuches, especially with how they have to animate the ball Noya with the great save we adore him Yes Yachi with the arm tearing after Adam mentions the broken fingers is just like a perfect example Yes, they doing more simple shit Yachi's persepctive is so great, she certainly has a good insight score They have 2 very different kinds of overwhelemed WE LOVE HER MOM WE LOVE HER Hinata sucking at theatre is perfect I love Hinata's (unintended) pitch of how every role is important and the small roles need to be played so do your best at the small role Love Kageyama razzing him for townsperson B Love seeing Yachi at home doing work, these small humanizing moments are awesome Weekend study club!!!! WE LOVE HER MOM WE LOVE HER I love how Hinata has nothing but praise for Yachi infront of her mom Kageyama reciting is awesome and so funny as a character moment The aide being the one to notice Yachi wanted to say something is awesome and like just makes me think even more he is a great dude, he checks in with her Love the conversation they have while walking, so perfect and classic Yes the leaving the book is a classic Hinata reciting all of his screw ups for Yachi is amazing and hilarious Yes, just do the thing, now let me drag you along Love that she compares her life to a Shojo Yachi you are not worthless, you are awesome Great chatacter development from YAchi realizing the first part of acheiving the goal is recoginizing the goal WE LOVE HER MOM SHE IS AMAZING Love the aide's comment here, shows how long he has worked for/with her Yachi gaining Hinata's random yelling habits it hilarious and embrassing WE LOVE HER MOM SHE IS FANTASTIC The sort of awkward "yes dear" energy from her mom at the unexpected is awesome and cute AND SHE IS SO PROUD OF HER DAUGHTER!!!!!! Moved to tears by her daughter's growth, what a mom The study scene is awesome WE LOVE HER MOM SHE IS TERRIFIC The way she helps Yachi with her project is just so cute and pure and I love it AND THE SIDE SQUEEZE HUG AFTER THE HAIR RUFFLE Adam, Hinata is too stupid for romance, he is not that tuned into how the world works. His only love is volleyball Hinata biking past the TV store that ignited his love of volleyball every day on his way to and from school is such an awesome detail Yachi is good at photos, and I love how we can see how her mom helped, where the details are, the way the image has been edited a bit to highlight the lighting and everything WE LOVE HER MOM SHE IS FABULOUS Exams being shown with Takeda as teacher is awesome And the fundraising is working, because lets me real that poster is awesome, and Takeda's reaction is great The moment of the jacket is so great, Daichi and probably Kiyoko organzing that is great Episode End: I agree Sarah, this is one of my favorite episodes in the entire show Yeah, most of the awesome episodes are wither match play or major emotional beats (Winners and Losers) but this one is so low key and awesome Winning recess matters, again I study this as part of my carear and education and it is fascinating Video End:

Guys, it was fun, as always, to watch your reaction. Above all to see that you have so much joy, you laugh a lot and the little chat on 23:18 about Townsperson B between Hinata and Yachi.... pure fun to watch your reaction on that 🤣🤣. But it´s true like Sarah said; Hinata has this ...nature to connect with the people and that is in my eyes a very great, positive character trait of him, cuz consciously or unconsciously, he usually encourages his counterparts, especially Kageyama, to go beyond their limits. Have fun guys, I look forward your next reaction. Have a great weekend.

this is the reason why i love haikyuu, the way the author literally cherished every characters is sooooo overwhelmed😢 I watched a lot sports anime but I think haikyuu is a few anime that talked about their managers and have a backstory of every characters. I mean I’m kinda dont like some but still dont hate them. every characters are well made.

10-30 Coach, you are So Right about this! It is always easy for an already a person with already strong character to say "you just need to be strong". When you're born like this - yes. But some of us bloom best when supported and appreciated, not "toughed up". Which doesn't mean they are worse or bloom less pretty, no.

I mean let's be honest, I think ALL of us were kind of like Adam with Yachi's mom at the beginning, you sort of get the feel that she's being neglected and her mom is TOO strong, but when you see the WHOLE episode and picture, you realize how great of a mom she really is and during a second watch through, you already know that and are ready to defend her, lol.

In regards to losing hair: Something I learned in high school that has stuck with me for a long time and made me feel better about shedding so bad as a girl: The average human loses between 50 and 100 hairs PER DAY through a normal hair growth cycle. So unless you see like a sudden shift in your normal loss, you're probably not losing as much as what you actually think. And if you have curly/kinky hair (like me), you will likely see the loss in the shower more evidently, because straight/wavy hair naturally falls out more easily throughout the day, whereas shedding will get caught in more tightly woven hair.

I love all of haikyuu, and can really appreciate these episodes that focus a lot on passion and your will to use time on hobbies/sport. It's big choices all of us take through life and haikyuu is one of the few animes who uses a lot of screen time about this, and I love that sooo much! Can't wait for next episode! ❤️ (If you guys ever react to more sports anime, Kuroko no basket also tackles some of this (but it has a supernatural twist, so it's a little different from haikyuu - still think you guys would enjoy it though!)) ❤️

14:52 Tsukki here was not being a jerk purposely. He was annoyed they'd forgotten what they've learned from him just the day before 😂 and When Hinata was holding Hitoka's hand running towards the subway, Hitoka felt like she was in a shojo type manga. Shojo manga is usually romantic ones for the girls.
