I am Jewish and three of my four grandparents emigrated as children from Ukraine in the years before WWI. When they left it was the Austrian province of Galicia. They talked very little about what it was like before emigrating. So I thank you for filling me in on a huge gap in my family history. I watched your whole Jewish History Lab History Lab which filled in a big gap in my knowing of Jewish history. So much thanks. And I believe you said your ancestors are from Galicia, too. If so, it is likely we are cousins.

A strange, but very acceptable way of gaining notoriety on Zelensky's part. I'm glad to have learned this. An interesting point, but not my biggest takeaway. My original intent is to thank Dr Abramson for his devotion to us his students, and add to the promotion of mutual love and respect, not to RISK detracting from his youtube channel by filling this space with my religious views. To me, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are one. God is so infinitely unified that it is hard for us to understand. To single out one is to go against God’s nature. God has revealed so much about himself to us, but he didn’t reveal it all at once. Over time more and more was revealed to us in his holy word. To think that he has even come close to telling us everything about himself, I think is an overestimation of our understanding of him and our current ability to understand him. I look forward to a time when our relationship with Him will become more perfected than it is now in this mortal sphere. I truly believe that He has sooo much more that he wants to share with us after we become more able. I LOVE the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. If I understand correctly, all Jews are taught to do this as well. In this we can be brothers. God said He is one (echad) in Deuteronomy 6:4. President Zelenskyy and PM Shmyhal are both Jewish and are both very robust people and politicians along with one of the chief rabbis in Ukraine Moshe Reuven Azman all remain in Ukraine to serve their people and to fight off the enemy! I have studied the Holocaust in the past couple of years out of personal interest. It was a common theme that US and Israeli (Palestine at the time) Jews used to criticise the European Jews for not resisting, which was not always the case, for example the Byielski brothers. What we see now is the defiance and the determination of the 21st century Central European Jewry (geographically Ukraine is in Central Europe) leading the fierce fight of a nation for its survival. What more Jewish story than this one?! I am not religious, however started praying 🙏🏻 for Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Ukraine few times a day! My great-grandparents emigrated from Kyiv in 1912 (I assume partially because of the Beilis trial), and I've been thinking a lot more recently about how so many people are being forced to flee now just like my ancestors did. Thank you for making this complex subject more understandable. My father grew up in western ukraine and was a survivor of Stalin’s labor camps during the war. I believe he was in Novosibiersk. He told me most, if not all, his fellow laborers did not survive the camp. Despite this he had a great affection for Ukranians and Russians alike - which was difficult for me to understand because of his camp experience. But it was more of a love for the culture than the politics. Later in life he helped the Ukranian diplomats in New York find living quarters after they could no longer stay in the Russian diplomat residence after the Soviet fall. A lot of the history he explained to me was difficult to understand because he said he had Polish documents but lived in Belarus, white Russia, or Ukraine. It never made sense to me until I realized that the borders in that area were constantly shifting from the conflicts through the years. So while he was born in what was Poland at the time, the same territory was Ukraine at the time he spoke to me about it. He wanted me to visit Ukraine and his home town with him after it opened up in 1991 but we were never able to organize it before he passed in 1996. This is the greatest regret of my life. Anyway thank you for helping me with the history. I look forward to viewing the other videos you made on the subject.

My mom's family fought against the Nazis and Russians in the Resistance with Bratsky Vestnik and were from the Austro-Hungarian Empire in Czechoslovakia with a mixture of ancestry and religions. I still have cousins in Prague Czech Republic. Prayers for Ukraine 🇺🇦. I was in Germany in May 1992 during the Nazi riots and Siege of Sarajevo in the Yugoslavian Civil War when I was 16. My grandmother and aunt made chicken and dumplings and Czechoslovakian kolache with poppy seed filling. I think a lot of Jews converted to Catholic to escape like Madeline Albright's Czechoslovakian and Yugoslavian family. My grandfather was Baptist. The Catholic disowned my greatgrandmother for who she married and my family immigrated through Ellis Island to America.

Professor, excellent lecture! Thank you. There is something that Westerners consistently miss when they label Zelensky a comedian. Despite being a wonderfully talented actor, he was not simply a comedian. He is a founder of Kvartal 95 Studio which became the largest and most successful Ukrainian media company. He was acting because that was something that he enjoyed, but in reality, he was running a multi-million dollar enterprise that employs hundreds of people. People were surprised at Zelensky's character because they imagined him as a comedian, whereas in Ukraine he is also known as an energetic entrepreneur and an extremely tough and demanding manager.
Answer this one: who is Ihor Kolomoisky to V. Zelensky? Why did Kolomoisky”s production company create the TV show “Servant of the People,” did everything they could to popularize this show, then organize a political party of the same name to elect the TV character to the actual position he played on TV? This seems like too much of a coincidence.

My dad is a Ukrainian American. Recently, I took a DNA test, and found out that I have10% Azken. Jewish DNA. That made this lecture all the more fascinating. It confirmed my believe that there was multi-culturism in Ukraine. I remember my grandmother talking about the fact that as a girl she had friends that were Muslim. I found that interesting, and I never got the since from my Ukrainian family that there was any sentiment of anti-semitism in them. My grandmother was rather open and broad minded. But she was Orthodox Christian. Apparently, not all our ancestors were Christian. Thank you for the lecture. Fascinating.
I am an American Presbyterian/United Brethren/Catholic/Lutheran, and I am 1 percent Jewish through DNA testing. I totally support President Zelenskyy as a great leader. Ukraine also encouraged Blacks from African countries to attend their colleges. But I believe that we should all love each other and treat each other with respect.

How do we know that God isn’t working through Putin just as much? Those who hold power, like Russia and Putin or any other formidable nation, only do so THROUGH God/logic (god and logic are the same thing, it would be illogical by definition to say otherwise) and because they have an understanding of/with God. All you see as “evil” is an illusion. Nothing can possibly fight logic/god and succeed. All things must be logically reasoned in order to be logical (real and existing) and stable. The sovereignty of a nation like Ukraine cannot be an exception to the rule. I don’t mean to sound insensitive to anyones suffering but most people do not understand what is truly going on, and that the chaos must burn itself off in order to get to a more perfect order. All things are going to plan and people wouldn’t find it all nearly as traumatizing if they understood the simplest piece of logic in the world, that being that nothing is nothing (0=0) and that truth, as well as logos (consciousness) is eternal. Know this so you can know everything and the purpose of everyone, not just zelensky and the people on “our side”… Logic/god does not make mistakes, therefore nothing is wrong besides our view of reality. LOGIC is an ABCDE pattern just like TORAH, ANGEL, DEMON, RIGHT & WRONG and many more, but interestingly that pattern of 5 non-repeating letters is also found in PUTIN, BIDEN and TRUMP There is only ONE logic and one logos (consciousness aka the field of logical reasoning) at the end of the day and all fights are a fight with ourself. So, stop fighting, and stop fearing that you can or will be killed. Life does not die, just as white does not become black and light is never going to be darkness. I hope this helps some people break away from some of their fear and nihilism. This is not a belief but the only way things can work according to Logic/God and both the logical proofs I’ve done as well as what the Hebrew scripture largely describes. Order can be made and it’s better than chaos, so it is being made, it’s just a process that involves a lot of suffering, as that is inherent in living with chaos, and is the unavoidable cost of paradise (soundness and completeness of all existence and creation).
Too many people claim to want to serve God, like it’s just gonna win them Gods favor and free shit if they sign up….that is naive and the opposite of service to the divine…that is self service, and unfortunately most “believers” (be a knower fuck belief….know logic and then trust in it…never blindly believe without reason…the scripture even says “know” god not “believe” in god if you read it carefully) are in that boat. Those who truly serve God are signing up for more than their naturally allotted share of suffering. The history of the Jewish people should make this clear.

You have made me understand why my parents grandparents my great-grandparents who emigrated to Argentina and my parents immigrated too or immigrated to the United States from originally Ukraine and Russia but even the Ukrainian Jews that I'm related to fervently held on to their Russian identity. I recently discovered that my mother's grandfather Solomon Morosoff was from Kherson Ukraine. My father's side of the family might be Ukrainian also because we have German or Austrian last name, derived from Wechsler but it's spelled apparently in Ukrainian spelling, Weksler. My entire life I thought we were Russian Jews but we're probably Ukrainian, I guess. Now I think I should probably check the immigration records of Argentina of Jews coming from that part of the world and see what the statistics are at least that might be a good way to go but I have to look at every single maiden name and last name and see if I can find the actual city names to know where they were from and when they were from there because the borders changed. When you explained though that Jewish people had the tendency to try to safeguard themselves by aligning themselves or assigning themselves the identity of the most powerful entity in the region it suddenly made sense why there was this ferocity of denial against Ukrainian identity. I also never understood why Polish Jews and Russian Jews didn't like each other. Now I guess it kind of makes sense because of all the wars and the water changing and it probably had to do more with politics than anything.
Thank you so much for this. My grandmother’s parents fled White Russia due to the pogroms following the rise of Bolshevism and so I have always had some ambivalence toward Eastern Europe. But this helps put some of that history in its proper context. And I have no doubt that helping Ukraine defeat Putinism is righteous.

Thanks for your videos. I was born in Zitomir and I can say that the majority of Ukrainians I encountered were antisemits and as more ignorant they were so more antisemitic. Among the educated uks I met some discent people even shemofils but they were minority. About 200,000 Jews were killed in Ukraine during 1918-1921 pogroms, mostly bu local Ukrainians. This should not be forgotten!

As a Ukrainian living in Poland, even for me it was hard to say "Glory to Ukraine" with full enthusiasm, because I know the long history of this phrase and that it can be ill interpreted by Poles, but now I've seen Mr. Abramson saying that phrase - I clearly have seen everything at this point. Thank you for giving a relevant historical context in English. There is nothing new here if you are Ukrainian and you know history, but your video is very important for the general English speaking population that may be confused by Russian propaganda.
Well I am an American of Polish descent and I know that the Polish Pan screwed over everyone in the Western Part of Ukraine,and I don't believe in sanitizing History, because of People's sensibilities.I know this much that when the Polish Pan was doing the Hanky Panky with some Polka (girl,not the Polka) and the Jews (because of their administrative skills and because they were literate and the Peasantry was not) that it was the Jews(no pejorative intended were going to pay the price along with the Polish Pan.I am a 4th generation and I apologize from the bottom of my heart for all the harm that was done to the Jews and Polish Pan by Bohdan Khelmnytsky. My father was a historian. His grandfather arrived in the US from Berlin in 1881 as a baby. He always taught me that Jews are God's people. Those that treat Jews well will be blessed for it, and those who do evil to God's people will suffer defeat and sorrow. He cited the Israeli conflicts of the twentieth Century as examples. My two best friends growing up were jewish so I was interested to watch this and learned a lot. Thank you. President Zelensky is a very inspirational leader. I worry about his safety and pray for him and his family too. May God keep him safe.

@@jazura2 tough call! I was in a similar situation. My girlfriend's boyfriend was cheating on her, I saw him kissing another lady. I told my friend, she became angry and stopped talking to me for a year. One day out of the blue she called apologizing. She had caught the boyfriend with another girl. At the time this happened, I had enormous heart ache divulging the info but I was willing to accept the consequences. I feel it wasn't gossip because it affected her life and possibly her future.

I know how viciously from reading transcripts of surveillance recordings of German POWs in a British prison. Even the Einsatzgruppen who commanded them seemed a bit shocked by Ukrainian violence. My point is that despite perhaps believing this incident should occupy a smaller part of the conversation, this is the central issue the Professor addresses and he should have presented it in a more upfront manner. Except for that, I am greatful for his research and for providing us this overview.

This is the first lecture Rabbi that i couldn't even finish listening to. I am a Ukrainian Jew living in Canada. I spent 27 years in Ukraine and went to school and university. The antisemitism of the people was horrible. My parents family was murdered and their Ukrainian neighbors with whom they lived 'peacefully' for hundreds of years they were who showed Nazi where the Jews were hiding. Each shtaytle of Ukraine has those Бабий Яр. My parents זצל were forced to labor camp and the Ukrainian neighbors were those who took their possession and who killed my pregnant aunt bc she could not walk fast enough... The terror was unspeakable. When I grew up we were not killed but we were constantly humiliated. The Zelensky story is quite sad Here we have an educated intelligent Jew who intermarried and employs his talents to the country that has horrible pogroms to his own people.

You need to feel Ukrainian antisemitism before you are talking about Jewish integration into their society. Why Ukrainian Jews wore the first ones to immigrate to the west? I was 6 years old when I was called a ‘k’ and a little Jew. I was threatened to go outside by myself after my family decided to leave in 78. I never had any chance to get into any college in Ukraine, while in the west I studied and graduated in different colleges. Most Jews converted and married Ukrainians and were called little ‘k’ by the families of their wife’s. Find one Jew who graduated best Ukrainian universities in medical schools, etc. unless they paid kickbacks, etc. Please stick to the subjects you know. Interestingly - the survey from Pew did not take place in Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk, so maybe the 5% number is not accurate and those regions are very much the exception. That might lead to a number more similar to the average in the region which is around 18%.
It's sad to see how this is playing out when so many Jews have lived in peace in Russia. I was overjoyed a few years back to see what a wonderful Hanukah celebration occurred in Red Square. Jews have suffered enough. Why should a Jew get involved in the politics of a country on the Russian border?
