Laos is a true jewel of biodiversity, home to remarkable animal and plant species. Some 1,200 species of vertebrates live there, including emblematic and highly endangered species such as the Indochina tiger, the Asian elephant, the Indochina leopard, the clouded leopard, the gaur, numerous monkeys, the rhinoceroses of Sumatra and Java, bears and many other enigmatic small mammals from Asia that we can't wait to show you through this video and I am convinced that you didn't even know the existence of some of them. But if mammals aren't really your thing, don't worry, Laos is also home to some beautiful snakes like the king and monocled cobras, the mangrove rat snake, bongars and vipers like the bamboo rattlesnake. . There is also of course the reticulated python, the longest snake in the world as well as a multitude of geckos, monitor lizards and surprising turtles such as the giant soft-shelled tortoise. There are many species of resplendent birds such as the little-known but splendid green peacock, hornbills and the antigone crane.
Unfortunately, like everywhere else in the world, the country faces poaching, illegal trade and deforestation. Formerly known as the country of a million elephants, Laos has only 800 to 2000 elephants today with more than half living in captivity... but these alarming figures unfortunately do not only affect pachyderms but practically all Southeast Asian species.
It is to help animals victims of human abuse, illegal trade and save species from extinction in Laos that the Lao Conservation Trust for Wildlife, abbreviated to LCTW, was created.
In a contrast between the misfortunes of a sad reality and the hope of a better future, LCTW leads a fight for biodiversity but also a fight for the individual. We will discover touching stories that often start badly but often end well, whether at the sanctuary and sometimes even in the wild when the animals can be released there!
