Hi
In this video I demonstrate how to install a coded second hand ABS or BCM module, in this case on a 2005 S40, by mistake, on the video I have said 2004.
The pumps on this and other Volvo cars, are coded to the car, which means you can't just straight swap them, as the car will not start.
In this case, the pump I bought, (from a well known auction website), came with the brake pressure sensor faulty, anyway, I managed to make a good one out of the two.

ALWAYS test the pump motor for resistance first. It should read less than 5 ohms. If you get a reading of 9 ohms or more then the big pump motor is bad. This ABS module is a Bosh part that is use on lots of autos, and the non-communicating problem is also common and has to do with a motor pre-load voltage check(no error code). The guy in the video could have simply switched the big black pump motor and the no communication problem should have been resolved. Even today you will see mechanics replacing only the board/connector part of this ABS pump and the problem does not get resolved. (Thanks for the Video LM Auto Repairs) TDI Love from Chicago

I test several components and connections and did not really find any up-normal. I test connections make visual inspection and this board for testing is made easier. Nothing I find. @@LMAutoRepairs That's what we'll do. I wonder if it is possible to program the used ECU using VIDA on my laptop and Autel J2534 device. Saw a guy that did this on a video after seeing this video. He said it works on most Volvos through 2007. Mine is a 2008. That would be the best since we already installed the unit and bled it. If not, then we will pull it and swap ECU's.

as I understand it you must make sure all numbers on the replacement ABS module and pump match exactly to the original,and I mean exactly !! otherwise you will have to have it re-programmed which won't be cheap !
@LMAutoRepairs
@LMAutoRepairs 6 лет назад
colinf1951 Not exactly... Depending on the numbers... anyway, in this case the problem is that the pump is part of the immobilizer system... so even a pump that matches the original one, will not work unless you transfer or program the immobilizer...

Hello lmsvvavr. Thank you for the video, very helpful. Is the abs units in the video ATE mk60? I have a Mazda 3 with a ATE mk60 pump. The fault code is C1288 "PRESSURE TRANSDUCER MAIN/PRIMARY CIRCUIT FAILURE"" I´m thinking of buying a second hand unit and swapping the eeprom like in your video. Do you know if the the eeprom is located in the same part of the PCB on all ATE mk60? Whats in the eeprom? Is it the cars VIN?
@LMAutoRepairs
@LMAutoRepairs 7 лет назад
Stefan Ihlberg Hi Not really sure if this is an MK60, the eeprom contains vin and other configuration data. In the volvos is part of the immobilizer system, so it needs to be correct for the car to run. Even if the eeprom is not exactly in the same place on your pump, they are easily identifiable. Done this quite long time ago, and can't really remember all the details... Hope that helps...

Hello, great video ! I'm dealing with ATE/Temic (No. 06.2109-5329.3)very similar from a Suzuki Vitara 08, but pressure sensor/pump it's ok. Problem seems to be in electronic board.(C1057 code among others reporting failing solenoids, ex C1043). I've already open it and checked but all seems to be good, no signs of broken or overheated solder joints or components, also main driver transistors and solenoids were checked and are ok. Are you aware of some video or hint about repairing this type of boards? I'm heard about crimping or soldering the contact pins (as they come just pressed from board to solenoids and connector). Any help would be more than welcome :)
@LMAutoRepairs
@LMAutoRepairs 8 лет назад
Hi Unfortunately I never came across that problem, however you can measure it from the pins to the PCB, and you are right, those pressure contacts sometimes get loose, making poor contact, soldering them can help, you will be able to see it when measuring. Check the PCB under the microscope, if you have one, it might be a very thin crack difficult to see with a naked eye. Aslo check the voltage feed to the module... it should have more than one... Hope that helps...
@LF0791
@LF0791 8 лет назад
Hi, thanks for your reply and advice. I'll check all that you mention and other things that I've been reading today in other sites/forums and I'll post the final results. So far I think that's possible that contact pins lose pressure over years bc of repeated heat/cold and vibration, besides that, different metals always leads to oxidation, also I've found a bit of brake fluid leak inside the board, even over a uC. Usually this fluid is not conductive (pure and sealed). But who know's it's reaction over different metals. Regards

It looks easier to swap the whole module instead of removing the chip and soldering. Just put the hydraulic block on the module to original car depending if you electronics are good. My pressure sensor is bad so that’s how I’m gonna do it.

Hey, I have BCM-0130 0131 and 0134, all relating to the pressure sensor inside the module. Would this be cured by simply replacing the middle metal section of the abs unit or do you think this combination of codes is a caused by bad connections inside the bcm electronic part? My options are to either open and reflow the electronic module or swap my computer module onto a working pump and mid section. Which do you think would be the best course of action for this combination of fault codes? No ABS light, only anti skid service required so I don't know if it's a bad sensor or bad module connections. Many thanks.

The problem is that if the brakes are applied so hard that the ABS starts to work, the pedal starts to pulsate, and by reducing the pedal force equivalent to light braking, the wheels are not locked, but the pedal still pulsates until the brake pedal is fully released or car stops. This problem also occurs if I drive into a small pot hole while lightly braking, the wheels do not lock, but the pedal starts to pulsate until the pedal is released. And the worst part is that the moment when i brake hard and ABS starts to work, I can feel that one of the front wheels does not brake at all, but if I brake hard but not so hard to lock the wheels, all the wheels brake as needed. Where to look for a problem? Diagnostics do not show errors. Sorry for my bad english.

Question: Can you drive a car if swap of eprom fails and you ruin ECU. You get ABS and ESP light on but can you? And is it true that if motor resistance is too high it stops to communicate.

Did it work? That is the critical piece of information. My ABS if throwing intermittent ABS check/fail lights. My mechanic drove the car with the diagnostic tool installed. It was working beautifully and then suddenly went dead. The next day he checked again and the system was working fine. He reset the code and the ABS light stays off. Could poor contact with the pins on the brake pressure sensor cause a fault that comes and goes? Thank you for the video.

Hi In the video description I say I made a good pump out of the two... So, yes it worked... at least for my problem... What problem is your BCM reporting?
@johnferguson7235
@johnferguson7235 8 лет назад
It first sent a bad front wheel speed sensor code and we replaced bot front sensors and the system worked fine. Then it turned the ABS warning light back on a second time. When testing, the unit just dropped dead and stopped communicating with the ECM. The next day it worked fine. I am having the fluid and filter replaced in the Haldex unit and I haven't had a chance for another test drive.

Hi You need a programmer capable of read the chip, then load the contents on the chip of the donor pump. You can alternatively just swap the chips. Do you have any experience read and write eprom?

Hi . Thanks for the reply. No I dont have any experience of read and write eprom but I'll learn - just looked up price of programmers on the net so thanks for the lead. When you say remove the chip and swap I assume that it is not soldered in....is that right? Forgive my ignorance here but I'm on a learning curve!
@LMAutoRepairs
@LMAutoRepairs 7 лет назад
Hi Glad I could help. The eprom is indeed soldered. Either way you need to remove the chip. You can try to program in circuit... but I would discourage you from doing it that way... The eprom has only 4 legs... easy to de-solder and re-solder.... if you have no experience, I would advise you to try de-solder smd components on an old board first....

Hi - on my Volvo V70 ’01 I have an orange light on, saying ABS /STC maintenance required. Drove the car to the mechanic, his reading of the failure was just ABS-unit failure, so bought a “new” used ABS /STC unit. The mechanic put this one in, and still got the same failure read. I took the car to a more electronic experienced mechanics - they got the same read on both the ABS-units. They were not very specific on the reads, just that the ABS /STC unit is failing. My question is, is it enough to reprogram the epRom (or swap the one from the original to the “new” used one), Or is the problem located elsewhere do to the fact that I never had any starting issues with the car nor red warning lights???
@LMAutoRepairs
@LMAutoRepairs 7 лет назад
Jesper Simensen Perhaps the pump is not part of the immobilizer system in that year/car.... Well, a bit of more info would be helpful... like which code exactly is coming up... So unless you have been unlucky and you got another pump with the same issue, or is something else... you need more specifics... I could suggest one thing or two... but might be misleading you... see if you can get hold of the exact code that is coming up... Have you Google the problem, see if is a common issue perhaps...

I got a paper with the failure code: 0070 Pumpemoter / motorrelæ Fejlbehæftet (danish) 0070 Pumpmotor / motorrelay faulty Seem to be a bit of at broad failurecode (error code) wouldn't you agree?
@LMAutoRepairs
@LMAutoRepairs 7 лет назад
Jesper Simensen Possibly... but now with the error code we you can start to look at a few things... That code refers to incorrect voltage being delivered to the ABS module... Start by checking the basics, fuses, connectors etc... see at the ABS plug if all your grounds and voltages are present... If all there, then you need to look deeper into the module... starting with the motor, ensuring is actually working... if the motor on your pump is bolted to the module, remove it and bench test it....
@jespersimensen7171
@jespersimensen7171 7 лет назад
Thanks - I will start there, but now that the new one is installed in the car, wouldn't the faulire / error in the car dashboard stay there, because of the wrong info stored in the EpRom? Despite everything else theoretically working as it should
