I own a Volvo xc60 and love the car. You need a video like that to get to the key fob battery as it would have been very hard to figure it out on your own
Could volvo have designed the key fob any worse and made the battery process any more ergonomically impossible? I am pretty sure hands do not operate this way. It would have been smart to make end of the key capable of screwing cap of the battery compartment. People with arthritis in an emergency situation needing their key are doomed.
Great video. Now do one where the key fobs won’t work and two Volvo dealerships and Volvo corporate don’t know how to fix it and you can’t open the fuel filler door either even though the doors will unlock manually and run with the key fob in the center console. That’d be great because I have a $45k driveway ornament for the past 4 months.

@@VolvoCars Thank you. I have emailed Volvo corporate and intially they were responding and they now have stopped responding to my emails. Worst customer service experience in history. I have not been able to use my car for the past 6 months and Volvo doesn’t even care. Never again.
@@VolvoCars Almost three weeks since I emailed that address you gave and ZERO response. 25+ weeks and my XC40 still sits in my driveway - undriveable because the key fobs won’t work, 2 dealerships couldn’t fix it, and you can’t open the gas cover without working key fobs. Great job VOLVO! Never again.
I'm a new owner and I've learned from experience to take the battery out of the spare key because once the battery from the main key dies years later and you go for the spare key the battery's drained on that one, too. I had to look this up in order to remove the cover. Such an overly complicated process.
The video doesn't make it clear that there are two buttons. The exterior black switch button opens the side with the key. Once that is open, an internal metal switch button opens the side with the battery. There are in fact two internal metal switch buttons.
No it totally FAILED to mention the internal metal switch. Thank you so much for pointing this out. I'd have to go to the dealer to get the battery replaced otherwise. Much appreciated!
I have had to do several battery replacements for this key fob. I dread it every time - worse than a trip to the dentists. The key (sorry) is to keep the fob attached to a key ring so that you can get a good grip to slide on and off the covers. An F- for industrial design.
I have replaced the batteries for both keys but neither are working properly. I regularly get the ‘key not found’ message when I want to start the car. I then lock the car and unlock, then the key is detected. When I want to unlock (when I’m outside the car) I often need to lock first and then it works. After I have put the car in Park, it also gives the ‘key not found’ message, even if the engine has not been turned off. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Tried multiple times and just realized the most important part is to move/press the small button “down” and to the right. Just sliding it to the right with the fingernail would not work...
Anyone who thinks this key is too complicated doesn't have enough exposure to luxury cars. I own an Audi, a Lexus, and a Volvo, and this key is no worse than the others. Modern keys have so much technology, they need to be protected from careless damage.
Love the vehicle, hate the fob. I don't know who approved this design, but holding the little button requires force that is perpendicular to the force required to remove the cover plate. That makes for extreme frustration. Flat out dumb.
I can do it with one hand. Just use my index finger to slide the button and the rest of my fingers/hand to slide the cover off and it’s very easy to slide the second cover off to expose the battery cover.
Lost an hour to this. Turns out the button on mine for some reason isn't connected to the mechanism that moves the pin inside to release the cover like it is on my other Volvo key fob. Finally got the cover open by sticking a prong of a fork down into the tiny gap you can make to the left of the button after moving the button to the right, and then sliding the fork to the right and sliding the cover off like the video. What a pain!

Please do not wait until the battery is 100% dead. When the "key fob low battery" notification appears on your dash (like mine last night), simply bring it inside and replace it in the morning.
This has to be the absolutely the WORST designed key fob in the world. It is NOT easy to open as they imply. It is very very difficult at every step and many will actually need three hands (i.e. two people to do a couple of these steps! Even the battery compartment is poorly designed and hard to open. The slot is way too shallow to use a screwdriver and difficult at best with a coin! AWFUL design and not a great video guide for it either!

@@TheBlackice38 try to change the battery. 2nd it stoos recignizing you when you change your battery and they want you to come to the dealer ..to change the battery..its not close or convenient..
We currently own 2 current Volvo’s, our 2 and 3 ones. Generally I am a fan, but these keys suck. When 2 educated people have to look up this video every time a battery dies, it is not a good design. Too many small buttons, that have to get pushed in just the right way to get this thing open. And of course the back of the battery case is plastic and too more pressure on it will rip it up. Love Volvo, absolute hate these keys.
Yeah, it's a complete PITA to replace the battery in these things. It's much harder than it should be. We have four of these fobs and I have to look up the instructions every time I need to replace a battery.
Utterley rubbish design. Just come out for the second time to rescue a driver with a dead fob. They have a spare battery but no screwdriver and not enough finger strength to open the fob up.
worst key design ever. Quality of car is great but this key design is awful. Chrome chips off plastic quickly, impossible to open and shut easily (shouldn't need a video every time to figure out how to change the battery), and plastic tabs holding the battery break. Ugh...
I don't know what your fingernails look like in Sweden but getting a fingernail into that "indentation" was impossible. It barely accommodates a 0.035 Alan wrench.
