My sentiments exactly! Thank for this awesome car review. I definitely will be going with the C40 for the sleeker design. I do hate that the Panoramic roof doesn't open n close though. Def a drawback!
Thank you for the great review… As always! You are my favorite reviewer. And, I am thrilled that you made this review for the C40. Mine has been reserved, and I am hopefully going to get delivery mid March. Only the ultimate spec is available in the US, and I am getting it in the fjord blue. This review made me even more excited!
xc40 has been one of my favourites since they released it nearly 5 yrs ago. Seriously looking at the FWD version for my next car alng with an ioniq5. the xc40 is just an excellent little car.
Fantastic review - and seams to be the only one that compares the FWD and AWD models. I have test driven the twin engine XC40 and was blown away by the instant performance and overall comfort. I am very close to buying but wanted to see how the single engine compared as I've not been able to try one yet. Its a shame they are sooooo expensive here in the UK for the Ultimate spec. Thanks so much for the review
If i had a lot of money,i:d probably drive a Volvo XC40 or C40...unless i'd have a whole lot of money, then i'd be a Porsche Taycan CrossTurismo turbo s. I do like the C40 marketing, 100% electric, 0% leather 👏 base FDW small battery would be enough
Just picked up my XC40 R-Design with the lifestyle additional package last month, the engine feels quite smooth for me and it gives out the power when I needed it. The interior is not looking pompous and the 'right in the middle' vibe gets me every time I look at it. Never regret the choice and am persuading my fam to get another Volvo now😂.
Wow, a car reviewer who actually recommends smaller wheels. Finally. The race for larger wheels has just gotten us more uncomfortable and less efficient cars.
I would have been happy with 19” on my XC40, but that’s what it came with on a dealer order. The 20” is an attractive rim, but to me these ultra low profile tires look like something from a horse drawn cart with a ride to match - fine on a sports car but a compact SUV? You would think Swedish designers have never seen pot holes after a bad winter!
@@bosternou96 they aren’t great. I’m waiting for a set of 19s for my winters to compare them. Two problems, though - 40/45 series rims are bad news for curb rash, even with surround cameras. Then there’s ride quality. I mean, I’ve seen some of these ‘slammed rides’ the kids think are so cool, but are almost undriveable. If you want Ultimate trim, you get 20s - nice if you’re young and hip I suppose. I’d take 18s if I could, but the brakes are too big on the Recharge, according to the dealer.
@@davidcottrell570 the problem is that the ultimate would be only £20 more a month over the plus… and it would add cool features like sunroof / 360 camera… To say no to that just because of the 20” isn’t great…
Great review again. I prefer the look of the C40 but it loses the rear wiper. It is the one issue I have with my Ioniq 5, especially in winter with salt on the road. Rear camera also gets covered in muck…
I'm in LOVE with the C40, the only issue I have is the 220 mile range. If it was at least 300 I think I could do it, but I feel like with that short of a range, it should be a hybrid and have a gas back up. The range is my ONLY hang up.
Best review I've seen of any car so far, thanks! Ordered the C40 ultimate which is coming in October, after seeing this I only regret a bit not getting the blue cloth.
A really great video as always. I can't believe that Volvo is FINALLY putting a wool interior into the XC40/C40. Too late for me but at least i will get it in the V60, when it finally arrives.
You always make the point about physical temperature control. On my recent cars, Audi TT and Porsche Macan S, I have not changed the temperature setting for five years. 22 degrees summer and winter on synchronized auto. But I agree that any commonly changed operating function should not need a menu to search.
I rarely change the temperature but would prefer physical buttons. But I use heated seats and steering wheel, almost every morning in wintertime. Turn them on until the seat/wheel is warm/comfortable and then off again. That really should be physical buttons as well. Maybe if I got used to preheating the car via the app, it wouldn't matter - you can do that, right?
Great comparison 👍 but at 3:45 you talk about light signature. When recording the indicator lights on C40, did you use the hazards or indicators? Because the C40 has sequential indicators, but regular flash when using hazards. Same as the facelift versions of S90/V90. Unless there's differences for the German market.
I like the C40 look, but I cannot open the roof glass and the trunk looks so small. In general, it is so sad the fact that now it is soooo hard to get the EV without waiting several months or even a year, sometimes without standard options due to the supply shortage of certain parts 😕.
Good job Thomas I hope Volvo are still doing the petrol version I am not convinced of electric cars yet is there a new one out this year petrol I would love to know you’re doing a great job Alice Burke.
I'm not really a fan of Volvo design, so I just watch these reviews as fun and for general car info., because Thomas is just so enjoyable to watch as a reviewer and as an enthusiast. But one thing I noticed here was how many Mini's there are on the streets (which as a Mini fan, I like), and also other small "city cars" like the Smart and Fiat-500. Also - in the UK we normally refer to it as the “Accelerator Pedal”, and that seems equally fine for electric cars as well as ICE cars. But ... very entertaining and classy review as always.
Thank you for the review. In the US, these are hard to find, though I have been able to sit in one. It is even nicer looking in person. Could you please compare it to the Audi Q4 e-tron?
#thomascomedy never gets old!! 😂 And today a little bonus with child Thomas trying to mess with dashboard controls from the back middle seat 😂. Jokes asside, another outstanding review by the best! Thanks quite a bit!!
I have a 2019 XC60, and the sunroof control (a real switch) is one of the worst parts of the car. It is a physical switch but move it too far and it opens the sunscreen and sunroof, often covering oneself in rain or snow depending on the season. It looks like that isn't possible with these new models touch sensor and its new behavior, but I would have preferred the same behavior with a physical button.

The 30 kWh/100km at 120 km/h look dramatically high for the 2WD version. I know it was cold and windy. But I don't think an Enyaq or Model Y would go that high if they manage it with around 21 kWh/100km at 120 km/h under good conditions.
I’m looking for further info on the model year upgrade to the front grille. I have an XC40 P8 on order and I would love for it to have the new grille..
thinking of leasing the XC40 FWD, i need to do 230km( 115 to work and 115 back) highway roads with chances of traffic jams daily. With a chance of not having a charging spot at work. Is this doable with this car even in winter?
This one I would buy to Tow a Airstream 16 RB Caravel in Toronto ON Canada 2024 Volvo XC40 & Airstream 16rb Caravel seem like it be a nice touring setup to travel North America
Tested the xc40 myself - Harman Kardon sound is really just a marketing hype in this car, it sounds even worse than a standart sound in my current vw. May be speakers are good, but there are very limited sound setup options, no equalizer, no way to increase highs and mids. Probably it's more focused on subwoofer... and regarding multimedia - I can't understand all the reviews saying its easy to use etc. I tested the car for 3 hours and I couldn't get used to it - it looks like from mid 90ties design, very limited functionality... othervise the car itself, the interior looks very nice and premium. And on bad quality roads the suspension felt very nice. Sp for me the biggest cons - multimedia, efficiency. And no use of overpaying for harman kardon.
How tall are you? I ask because in my family (US) we tend to choose SUV to ensure leg room in from and back seats. How does your comfort in these compacts compare to a larger suv or even Volvo wagons?
Good work, Thomas. Does the C40 have a built-in sunshade? Or is the sunroof always letting in the light? Also, is the microfiber breathable? Have a Silver Dawn C40 on order here in Los Angeles. But concerned about comfort in Summer sun with "plastic" seats and no built-in sunshade. One pedal driving with dual motor ist ausgezeichtnet!
Thanks for answering. Love your reviews. I’m deciding between a c40 core which I can get at £350 a month (leasing), or a XC40 plus (can’t get core, as it doesn’t come with parking cameras or front parking sensors) at £450… Since i like the look of the XC40 and I think the XC40 is the better choice for a family, plus more headroom at the back, i was going to go for plus XC40 for £450. However then i saw the XC40 ultimate is only £15 more than the plus a month… I was about to go for it, then I noticed the wheels are only 20’’… cannot get 19’’. Since i live in a big city and generally bag roads (UK)… I have now doubts. What would you choose? Simple C40 core for £350 XC 40 plus for £450 XC 40 ultimate for £465 XC 40 core would be £370, but it has no back parking camera!
@@autogefuehl thanks.. money wise it is the better deal. But having sat in the back of the C40, if I sit up right I hit my head on the roof. My children are young so not a concern for my general use case, but it feels like it’s not the right car for a family… the XC40 seems like the better one. Do you think the parking camera at the back and parking sensors in the front are a must have for the XC40? Cause I could also go for the xc40 core, which costs very similarly to c40.. but lacks parking camera at the back and sensors in the front
@@autogefuehl thanks. I just mean in terms of ride comfort and suspension? I’ve been able to test drive a polestar 2, but can’t find an XC40 or C40 to test. Trying to decide between them.
It's so odd that the US can only get larger wheels than Europeans can get (not something I like). And I think that in the US, we can only get 20-inch (or larger) wheels on the C40, sadly.
Maybe they'll change it for MY2023, but I think that you can still get the XC40 in the USA in 2022 with 19-inch wheels... But why not let Americans have the "more comfortable" smaller wheels also, as Thomas says...
Other than "appearance"; larger wheels weigh more, cost more and tire replacement will be more expensive....in addtion to the mentioned fact that larger wheels mean lower tire sidewalls and less comfort; albeit with a bit more responsive steering. Bottom line - consider what your priorities are.
Have a 2019 XC40 petrol. Great car and upgrading to EV later this year. Both of these look great options but not going to stay with Volvo. Tesla or Polestar likely just now. That could change!
Could any owners share their City range ? not going over 60mph or 100kmh? I have the MG ZS EV, but the range is just so bad. I get only 125miles 20-90% But I'm looking for something that can do 200 miles 20-90% in the City. Not to mention all the issues and time spend in the service center for the MG ZS EV. What a bad luck car...
I think these modern Volvos are just a bit too over-engineered. I miss an old fashon Volvo 245 that did it's job no matter what. Maybe Volvo will someday come to their senses and build a modern version 245 EV.
I think Volvo has lost its way; Only electric soon, that means they will lose the market from the whole of Africa (54 countries), now XC40 fuel powered, XC40 electric (but small battery powered), now C40 (which is actually an XC40) with a big battery. What happens if they decide to create another coupe the size of an actual S40 in the future? Remember the C70 (C means coupe), the C40 is NOT a coupe. Lets hope they eventuallly decided on something sensible. I must say, the review is tip top, thanks.
woven floor mats... i know this sounds silly.. but why is this a thing, why on planet friggin earth, does a car company put a textile floor mat inside of a car?
