A different kind of video this time. We are getting Nova Vita ready for the 2024 season and there are always jobs to be done......
This time we thought we would film something different for you...READ ON...
Changing the coolant pump on a Volvo Penta MD2030 is a meticulous but manageable task.
Here is a brief description of the process.
Begin by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery to ensure safety.
Drain the coolant from the system. You can suck out most of the coolant using a vacuum pump. Suck it out of the header tank and from the heat exchanger when the cap is removed. This will leave about 3 litres to drain via the plug. The coolant will 'mostly' go into the space under the engine, the rest will go into the bilges.
Next, undo/remove the hoses and belts connected to the pump, taking care to note their positions for reassembly.
Unbolt the old pump, being mindful of the position of any retaining bolts or brackets.
Clean the mounting surfaces thoroughly to ensure a proper seal for the new pump.
Install the new coolant pump in the reverse order, securing it snugly but not overly tight.
Reattach hoses, belts, and any other components removed earlier.
Refill the cooling system with fresh coolant, following manufacturer recommendations.
Finally, reconnect the battery and carefully inspect for leaks before running the engine to ensure everything is functioning correctly.
We are not mechanics but will tackle jobs that we believe to be within our capabilities.
If you are not sure about a job then our advice is to leave it to the professionals.
We found the job to be fairly straightforward but a little awkward at times, the drain plug for the coolant being particularly tricky. The crow's foot spanners and the universal joint made undoing this much easier.

Great video ! Super idea to trace the part on cardboard and make holes to put the bolts in. 👍 so much easier to replace. Also you can never use too much sealant . Look forward to the next video from you both.

Nice trick to remove water pump pulley. I will suggest placing a rag or old tee-shirt cover for the alternator vanes to protect knuckles. The water pump outline looks like one of the isles you visited. I think youre ok with the Hylomar, as long as you have a thin uniform coat. Great video!

Good job you two. The amount of Hylomar looked right to me. I have a flexible driver for hose clips. I can highly recommend getting one. Its one of the most used tools onboard Adagio as it can get in at difficult to get to angles. Putting the end of the header tank hose in a container of hot water would have made it easier to fit, but I expect you know that!

Thank you for the very well made video. An interesting improvement would be to replace the square of the water outlet on the engine block with a drain cock, which can also be obtained from Volvo Penta; this would make it much easier to change the coolant. I have a question about the use of Hylomar sealant. Why did you coat the entire seal with Hylomar and not the small area shown in the workshop manual? Please do not take this as criticism. (Please excuse my poor English.)

Hello Wilhelm. Thank you for your kind comment. I have seen the drain fitting you suggest and it looks like a good idea. Maybe something for a future job 😁 Using the Crows foot spanner did make it easy though (plus I have some more shiny tools 👍) There were two reasons for coating the gasket all over and not just the area shown. 1: I did not want any leaks and 2: I think it only needed to go where the gasket touched. I hope I am correct.
