This is exactly what I needed on my Volvo SX-A!!! Thank you for the post! I did do one thing differently that made it easier... I left the outdrive down all the way and after tying the string on the end of the cable, then taping the string with electrical tape, I just pulled it right out. Then when pushing the new one in, I just guided it with the string on the new one and it pulled right into place without bending anything. This made it a little simpler getting the old one out and the new one back into place. Using electrical tape on the string worked great! Apparently based on the number of views you have, this is a common issue. It's too bad boats don't have recalls on bad design items like cars...
Great video thanks for sharing this is exactly what I need to do to my both as well I went out today to start it and it wouldn't go into gear and stuck look at the back and noticed the cable is messed up thanks for sharing
My neutral button was stuck because the shift cable would not move and it stuck the neutral button in. It would not pop out because the shifter would not move correctly. I also bought a new shifter. It was cheapest here: www.marineengineparts.com/volvo-penta-3888317-control-3161947.html ...they actually sent the new style shifter that is chrome - unlike the picture. It contained the entire shifter assembly even though it was not displayed in their picture.
